“I just don’t want to go to the point where I show up and nobody else does, you know?” Strait said in an interview before making the announcement. “It’s been great. I’ve been doing it for 30-some odd years and I’ve loved it. Sometimes I’ve not liked it as much. And here lately it’s just the walking out onstage part, that’s all great. I’m still loving that. It’s just the hectic part about touring and traveling and bam bam bam bam. I just feel like it’s time

for me to try something else.”News of Strait’s retirement will come as

something of a shock in country quarters. He’s so entrenched in the genre he’s be-come part of the bedrock, a landmark to be marveled at repeatedly over the decades.

The 60-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member from Texas released his first single “Unwound” in 1981, before some of today’s top stars were born. Since then he’s had 59 No. 1 country

singles and is the only artist to score a Top 10 hit in every year of his career. All his albums have gone platinum or gold, selling more than 68 million copies.

Traditional country singer Joe Nichols acknowledged Strait’s impact when he called the singer “the Rolling Stones of country music” in a 2010 interview. And in a lot of ways, that’s been true. Until now. The Stones refuse to retire from the road, while Strait has decided to do it on his own terms.

“I’m sure I’ll miss it. I’m sure I will,” Strait said. “How can you not after doing it for so long. It was a hard decision to make. It was tough. I’ve lost sleep. But I think about midway through this tour I’ll realize that, yeah, I did make the right decision. It’s just a part of it.”

The first leg of the tour will kick off Jan. 18 in Lubbock, Texas, and end June 1 in San Antonio. Dates for 2014 will be announced later. Martina McBride will join Strait on tour in 2013.

Strait said he was nervous about whether fans will come out and see him, but that’s rarely been a cause for concern over the years. His live show is one of country’s top draws. He’s sold more than 4.3 million headlining concert tickets since 1999, according to Pollstar, an average of more than 18,000 per performance.

He said one of his most memorable per-formances was his last-minute replacement of Eddie Rabbitt at the 1984 Houston Ro-deo in the Astrodome: “He just happened to get a case of laryngitis, which was a stroke of luck for me.” And he also fondly remembers opening for Willie Nelson in those early years: “I opened for Willie at a fair one time and we were right in the middle of our set and the crowd just starts going crazy and I’m thinking, ‘They’re really liking this stuff.’ I look behind me and Willie’s bus is pulling up.”

PAgE 6Justin Bieber is heartbroken

today after one of his youngest fans, 6-year-old Avalanna Routh – who was better known as Mrs. Bieber – died of cancer. The “Boyfriend” singer tweeted a sweet message about the Boston girl on Wednesday afternoon, writing, “just got the worst news ever. one of the greatest spirits i have ever known is gone. please pray for her family and for her. RIP Avalanna. i love you.” About an hour later, he wrote, “please

show respect to her and her family. say a prayer for her and for them. i miss her.”

Routh gained national attention last year when she pretended to marry Bieber in a wedding ceremony staged by the doctors and nurses at the Boston hospital where she was being treated.

The day before Valentine’s Day, the singer himself flew her and her par-ents to meet him in New York, where

they spent an afternoon playing board games and just hanging out. The Biebs even let the cutie play with his famous hair! At the time he tweeted, “That was one of the best things i have ever done. She was AWESOME! Feeling really inspired now!” and used the hashtag Mrs. Bieber. Routh appeared onstage with Bieber at the Apollo Theater, and when he appeared on “Today” in June, he said that the two continued to keep in touch via iChat and FaceTime.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Robert Kelsall, Chairman of the South Kuta Beach Association, reminded all those present that everyone had a responsibility towards the environment and if they did not start to respect the environment then the long term sustainability of tourism could be damaged with devastating impact on all those that worked in the industry. He urged those present to share the “waste” problem in their villages with their families and friends in order to reduce the waves of rubbish that envelope South Kuta Beach in the first few months of each year.

The theme for the worldwide event was “Our Place... Our Planet... Our Responsibility”

Clean Up the World’IBP

KUTA - Friday, 14 September was officially ‘Clean Up the World’ and to mark the occa-sion the South Kuta Beach Business Associa-tion consisiting of hotels, restaurants, schools and tourist attractions around the South Kuta Beach area participated to remove rubbish from the South Kuta beach along the front of the resorts. Everybody worked together in cleaning up large amounts of rubbish such as, plastic, cans, bottles and sandals that had been washed ashore.

Semarapura (Bali Post) –Clean Water crisis in Klungkung

seemed explanding where a number of Nusa Penida residents nowadays had to pay IDR 5,000 per bucket of clean water for drinking only. It was stated there were Water Municipal Works (PDAM) routes but it only existed on the shores and not on the hills. “Those in the hills are still having difficulties with clean water,” Minggir Village resident, Kadek Bentar, stated last Wednesday (26/9).

Dusun Dungkap Head of Batu Kandik Village, Made Rai, also stated the people here are having a clean water crisis as the water source at Guyangan that was built by Bali Province haven’t been producing any. “The water taps have been place in residents’ houses yet the watering hasn’t reached any of the houses. I have stated this to the Bali Province Government yet there hasn’t been any response. Up until now we keep on experiencing clean water crisis when actually the project should’ve been done last year 2011,” Rai ex-plained.

Commission B Member of Klung-kung House of Representatives, Gede Gita Gunawan, yesterday stated the water crisis have always been felt

by those at Batu Kandik, Klumpu, Batu Madeg, Tunglad, Pejukutan and Kutampi upper part. Gunawan has asked the Province Government to finish the project as it will definitely solve the water crisis problem as this water source has a water debit of 170 liters per second.

Pools Dried UpWater crisis also hit Bukit Ten-

gah, Banjad Delod Pesinggahan, Dawan, Klungkung where their pools and that general pool that was 4 meters deep gone dry. Ironically the PDAM tank that came before to fill it up never came again after a month of crisis as stated by a local, Nyoman Warka, last Wednesday (26/9). The people usually pay IDR 125,000 for one tank. It was stated that the tank was being sent to Buleleng. For that the people have to walk 2 kilometers downhill to get to a water source at Banjar Be-litung, Pesinggahan. Here a number of water wells still have little water and so they used it for drinking and others. Meanwhile First Director of Klunkung PDAM, Gede Darsana , couldn’t be confirmed about the clarity of the PDAM tank as he did not respond when contacted. (kmb31)

Travelers visiting the Anyar Market are mostly from European countries such as the Netherlands and France. They usually come in a group consisting of dozens of people. In addition, it is also visited by foreign tourists who come by riding a motorcycle. The tourist en-tourage coming in group is usually accompanied by a tourist guide.

It is the tourist guide that usually gives the explanation on the market situation, including the names of goods sold in the market. Mean-while, the tourists coming alone by riding a motorcycle are usually not accompanied by a tourist guide. Within a day, individual tourists visiting the market are quite a lot from morning to evening.

Apart from taking a snapshot, many tourists also shop. Interest-

ingly, they are interested to buy spices. Besides, a variety of tradi-tional fabrics and ritual parapher-nalia are also widely bought as a collection by foreign tourists. “I do not know the reason why. If there are guests, they buy a lot of spices or fabrics and ritual parapherna-lia,” said a local trader.

Some traders expected the government to arrange the Anyar Market more seriously. Although it was not an art market, the trad-ers believed the Anyar Market could be developed into a tourist attraction.

Zainudin, a trader in the Anyar Market, revealed if the Anyar Mar-ket indeed had a great chance to be made a tourist attraction in the city of Singaraja. To that end, the market area should be arranged by

the government together with the community of traders in the future. It was important to keep the market environment clean and beautiful at all times, so that it would not interfere with tourists during their visit to the market. Other than en-vironmental problems, placement of traders should also be arranged better. If it could be carried out by the government and traders, he believed though the Anyar Market was not an art market like the Sukawati art market would be able to attract the visit of foreign tourists.

“The market should be ad-dressed by the government to make it better, especially in terms of sanitation, so that tourists will be more comfortable to visit the market,” he explained. (kmb/ole)

Denpasar (Bali Post) –The car wheel that was driven by

Kade Sugendra (45) suddenly when flat when passing former Indonesian Bank Building at Patimura Street, Denpasar last Wednesday (26/9) when about to go back to Batubulan. It is strongly suspected that the wheel was being deflated purposely by someone irresponsible as Sugendra brought IDR 500 million cash after withdrawing it at Bank Central Asia (BCA) Hasanudin Branch, Denpasar. Luckily the wheel went flat near to Bali Police Headquarters. “I was scared that it was done by a criminal as there are many incidents like that. When the victim stopped, the money was then taken. So then I went to the Bali Police Headquarters so it is safe,” Sugendra stated when met at the Headquarters.

As instructed by his boss, Sug-endra had to take the money from BCA Hasanudin branch accompa-nied by a driver, Ketut Arya (28).

They withdraw the money at 10.30 am local time and after that they go back to their office at Batubulan yet as passing Veteran Street there was something weird with the car and turns out the wheel later went flat. “I was sure that this is a crime act moreover I have experienced the same thing before and I prefer to change the wheel in a crowded area,” Sugendra explained.

Before coming in to the headquar-ters, they met an officer, First Inspec-tor Luh Surya, who was supervising the traffic. Seeing what happened, Luh suggested them to go in the headquarters so it is safe. Arya then change the wheel at Bali Police and stated that he wasn’t aware that the car’s wheel is being deflated as there was no one acting strange around yet for safety they went to the headquar-ters. “It has been often suggested if withdrawing a lot of cash it is best to ask for security from the police to ac-company,” Luh clarified. California law had previously not recognized or prohibited au-tonomous self-driving cars, but that changed with the signing ceremony held at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., on Tues-day (Sept. 25). Brown took a ride in one of Google’s self-driving vehicles before signing Senate Bill 1298 — legislation that of-ficially approves test driving of autonomous cars on public roads and paves the way for the U.S. public to legally drive such cars in several years.

“Autonomous vehicles are another example of how Califor-nia’s technological leadership is turning today’s science fiction into tomorrow’s reality,” Brown said.

“This law will allow California’s pioneering engineers to safely test and implement this amazing new technology.”

Self-driving cars operated by Google have already spent months prowling the San Francisco Bay Area, and automakers such as Ford and Cadillac have also begun developing their own versions. Experts have welcomed the idea of self-driving cars as vehicles that could reduce traffic conges-tion, make roads safer and give improved road access to people such as the elderly or disabled.

“Self-driving cars can trans-form lives and communities — providing transportation to those not currently served, increasing

safety on the road, reducing or eliminating congestion, and turn-ing parking into parkland,” said Sergey Brin, Google co-founder.

Brin accompanied Brown and State Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pa-coima), author of Senate Bill 1298, during the signing ceremo-ny at Google’s headquarters.

The new California law re-quires backup safety systems in case the self-driving software or hardware fails. Such vehicles must have the ability to come to a stop if the human driver cannot take over during an emergency, and it must record at least half a minute of sensor data at any given time in case of accidents or colli-sions on the road.

Associated Press Writer NEW YORK — Barnes & Noble is rolling out two new versions of its

Nook tablet with sleek new hardware and a sharper high-definition screen. The bookseller’s move heightens the already intense tablet wars heading into the holiday season. Barnes & Noble said Wednesday that its new Nook HD will come in two sizes, one with a 7-inch screen (measured diagonally), starting at $199, and one with a new 9-inch diagonal screen, called the Nook HD+, starting at $269.

In addition to the new HD screen and a lighter body, Barnes & Noble is also increasing the services the Nook offers, adding a video purchase and rental service, allowing users to maintain different “profiles” and making it easier to browse titles in its book and magazine stores.

New York-based Barnes & Noble, the largest traditional U.S. bookseller, has invested heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books. In its most recent fiscal quarter, sales of digital content surged 46 percent, but revenue from devices dropped partly due to lower prices. Nook prices in the May-July period were about 23 percent lower than a year ago.

The company is seeking to offset tough competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com, as consumers increasingly move away from traditional books and DVDs to electronic books and streaming video.

The Nook HD is an upgrade to the hardware and services offered by its previous tablets, the Nook Tablet and Nook Color, which Barnes & Noble is phasing out. The company will continue to sell its smaller black-and-white e-reader, called the Nook Simple Touch, for $99, and a backlit Nook Simple Touch for $139. The Nook HD runs on Google’s Android 4.0 system and includes Barnes & Noble’s own app store and browser.

A mother may al-ways have her children on her mind, literally. New findings reveal that cells from fetuses can migrate into the brains of their mothers, re-searchers say. It remains uncertain whether these cells might be helpful or harmful to mothers, or possibly both, scientists added.

Recent findings showed that during pregnancy, mothers and fetuses often exchange cells that can apparently survive in bodies for years, a phenomenon known as microchimerism. Scientists had found that in mice, fetal cells could even migrate into the brains of mothers. Now researchers have the first evidence fetal cells do so in humans as well.

The investigators analyzed the brains of 59 women who had died between the ages of 32 and 101. They looked for signs of male DNA ?which, they reasoned, would have come from the cells of sons. (They searched for male DNA because female DNA would have been harder to distinguish from a mother’s genes.)

Nearly two-thirds of the women — 37 of the 59 — were found to have traces of the male Y chromosome in multiple regions of their brains. This effect was apparently long-lasting: The oldest female in whom male fetal DNA was detected was 94.

The defense system known as the blood-brain barrier keeps many drugs and germs in the bloodstream from entering the brain. However, doctors have found this barrier becomes more permeable during preg-nancy, which could explain how these fetal cells migrated into the brains of their mothers.

Although 26 of the women had no signs of brain disorders when they were alive, the other 33 had Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers found women with Alzheimer’s were less likely to have male DNA in their brains than women without such a diagnosis.

“The most important implication of our findings is the potential for both positive and negative consequences of microchimerism in the brain for a number of different diseases that affect the brain, including degenerative diseases and cancer,” researcher William Chan, an im-munologistat the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, told LiveScience.

Son’s DNA Shows Up in Mom’s Brain

Each region in Indonesia has different delicacy pursuant to surrounding environment providing the ingredients and tradition maintained. Bali, for instance, has lawar. It has been renowned and tasted by the tongue of foreign tourists. Hot spices supported by a variety of tubers and thinly-chopped vegetables like the young coconut shell, string bean, grated coconut or young papaya will kindle the appetite from the beginning until the end. Then, chopped meat such as pork, beef, chicken, duck or others are used as the main ingredient, and it gives the name of the lawar itself. This lawar delicacy is over and over again introduced in every occasion of traditional culinary event.

At villages, the ngelawar (preparation of lawar) tradition is begun by togetherness. Villagers usually slaughter a pig or the like and prepare the dishes collectively for special occasions such as personal life-cycle rituals or temple anniversary. From early in the morning, they have been ready to go by bringing along with a sharp knife. Few moments later, the chopping

boards turn crowded sounding tek...tek…tek…tek and goes on. Some prepare spices and vegetables, while the others slice thinly the meat in use. In essence, the pebat or kitchen depart-ment is very busy.

Meanwhile, when celebrating the Galungan and Kuningan festivity, Balinese people (Hindu) may join the collective slaugh-ter known as mepatung while food preparation is undertaken individually. This has something to do with slightly different tastes and interests. The food is prepared for filling some obla-tions other than for consumption. Their food habitually consist of lawar, satay, komoh (clear soup), urutan (sausage), skin crackers, tum (chopped meat mix with spices and then steamed) and so forth.

Other tradition remains to be maintained is ngejot or present-ing food gift to neighbor and relatives. Though they equally have the same delicacy, it is intended to maintain social relationship and exchange the food as theirs may have different tastes.

Similarly, family members will also visit relatives where parent or grandparent comes from. To share the happiness with the ancestral souls, at least family will also bring along sagi offering and be presented to them in the home platform shrine at bale dangin or eastern pavilion.

Today, probably many people are very busy as they must be in charge to work. However, there are always people offering their services by providing ready-to-serve lawar. It is variedly packed in nice bamboo basket containing particular number of satay, lawar and serapah (grated coconut with meat). On that ac-count, people will not be busy to prepare it in case of organizing an event or socio-religious activity.

When making a visit to Bali, it also a good opportunity for you try these delicacies. At least, try the lawar as it has been identi-cal to Balinese cuisine. Seemingly, your visit to Bali would be incomplete without ‘pampering’ your tongue by this delicacy. Of course, it will enrich your culinary adventure, too! (IBP/Doc)

“If it is indeed proved to exist, it must be dealt with firmly. The rules must be en-forced,” said Rumawan Salain in Denpasar.

Such decisive action, said Rumawan Salain, was to anticipate in order it would not become a bad precedent in the future. In addition, the effort that should be taken by the government was the matter of partiality with traditional markets as well as small and medium businesses.

“On that account, municipal government should continue its partiality with SMEs and traditional markets. Denpasar indeed needs investment, but the deal that has been made should be obeyed,” he said.

He said the municipal government should also conduct a monitoring or oversight in the field in response to the existence of unli-censed modern stores. “Supervision must be done in stages and continuously, but it should also be coordinated with relevant regional working units (SKPD),” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Denpasar municipality it-self stated that so far it had been consistent in applying the rules. “We also keep monitoring their existence and decisive action has also been imposed based on existing regulations,” said Spokesperson of Denpasar Municipality, Dewa Rai.

As evidence of the assertiveness, he said, there had been several modern stores that were not given permission as violating the rules. Besides, the evidence of partiality against the traditional market, he said, was implemented by revitalizing traditional

markets in Denpasar like the Agung Penin-joan Market, Renon Market and Sidakarya Market.

“It is the evidence that we have strongly empowered the presence of traditional mar-kets and existing SMEs,” he affirmed.

Previously, the accusation of the Asso-ciation of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo) of Bali saying if the Denpasar municipality was inconsistent in implementing the rules on limitation of modern stores considered harmful to traditional stores and local busi-nesses should be addressed.

Aprindo considered the termination of per-mit for modern stores intensified by Denpasar Mayor since three months ago was considered ineffective. It was based on the reason that since the past month, a number of national and international modern store networks began invading Denpasar. The government was ac-cused of being inconsistent with the termina-tion of permit for modern stores after seeing the establishment of new modern stores.

Moreover, the mayoral decree no longer allowed the establishment of modern stores in Denpasar other than those already listed at the moment. It was the Mayoral Decree No. 188.45.495/HK/2011 regarding the restrictions of modern stores in Denpasar. The decree was derived from the Mayoral Regulation No. 9/2009 settling the existence of traditional markets, supermarkets and mini markets, where this regulation also had an-other derivative namely the Mayoral Decree No. 188.45/565/HK/2009. Police fired tear gas Wednesday at rioters hurling gasoline bombs and chunks of marble during Greece’s largest anti-austerity demonstration in six months. The protests were part of a 24-hour general strike, the latest test for Greece’s nearly four-month-old coali-tion government and the new spending cuts it plans to push through.

The brief but intense clashes by several hundred rioters among the 60,000 people protesting in Athens came a day after anti-austerity pro-tests rocked the Spanish capital.

In Madrid, thousands of angry protesters again swarmed as close as they could get Wednesday night to Parliament, watched by a heavy contingent of riot police. There was

no fresh violence, but the demon-strators cut off traffic on one of the city’s major thoroughfares at the height of the evening commute.

The protesters chanted for the re-lease of 34 people detained Tuesday night in clashes that injured 64 others. They also demanded new elections to oust Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his conservative government, which has imposed cutbacks and tax hikes, deepening the gloom in a country struggling with recession and unemployment of nearly 25 percent, the highest among the 17 nations us-ing the common euro currency.

Spain’s central bank warned Wednesday the country’s economy continues to shrink “significantly,”

sending the Spanish stock index tum-bling and its borrowing costs rising.

Across Europe, stock markets fell as well. Germany’s DAX dropped 2 percent while the CAC-40 in France fell 2.4 percent and Britain’s FTSE 100 slid 1.4 percent. The euro was also hit, down a fur-ther 0.3 percent at $1.2840.

The turmoil Wednesday ended weeks of relative calm and optimism among investors that Europe and eurozone might have turned a corner. Markets have been breathing easier since the European Central Bank said earlier this month it would buy unlim-ited amounts of government bonds to help countries with their debts.

The move by the ECB helped lower borrowing costs for indebted governments from levels that only two months ago threatened to bank-rupt Spain and Italy. Stocks also rose. Media speculation about the timing and cost of a eurozone breakup or a departure by troubled Greece faded.

MOSCOW — Russian Presi-dent Vladimir Putin issued a strong warning Wednesday against inciting violent regime change in the Middle East — an apparent rebuke to Western calls for an end to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s rule.

Putin said the international community should operate as a united front to soothe the tensions in the Mideast and claimed that a bloody regime change would only fuel further unrest.

“Violence only begets vio-lence,” Putin said in a speech to foreign diplomats in Moscow.

The statement appeared to again pit Putin against President Barack Obama, who used his speech at the U.N. General As-sembly this week to call for an end to the Assad regime over its violent crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011.

Speaking about the rising violence in Syria, Obama said Tuesday that “the future must not belong to a dictator who mas-sacres his people.”

“Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision,” Obama said.

As frustration deepens at the ongoing failure of U.N.-led measures to reach a solution on Syria, officials from a coalition including the United States, the European Union and the Arab League met in the Netherlands last week to devise new ways of isolating the Assad regime.

But Putin said Wednesday that attempts to circumvent U.N.-led diplomatic efforts would prove destructive.

“Such action is fraught with potential for destabilization and chaos,” Putin said. “Life has re-cently given us proof that this is correct. It is time for us to draw lessons from what is happening.”

BEIJING — China on Thursday attacked Japan’s prime minister as obstinate and wrong for saying his nation won’t compromise in their dispute over who owns tiny islands in the East China Sea.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said in New York a day earlier that the islands are clearly an “inherent part of our territory, in light of history and international law.” He said

that issues over the islands should be resolved peacefully and by the rule of law.

“China is strongly disappointed and sternly opposes the Japanese leader’s obstinacy re-garding his wrong position” on the matter, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement that repeated China’s stance that Japan was ignoring historical facts and international laws.

“The country seriously challenges the post-war international order, but tries to take the rules of international law as a cover. This is self-deceiving,” Qin said in a separate state-ment.

Senior diplomats from both countries have met this week in New York and Beijing in an

attempt to mend ties frayed by the spat over the island group in the East China Sea known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

The islands, held by Japan, are uninhabited but sit astride rich fishing waters and poten-tially large reserves of natural gas. They are also claimed by Taiwan.

Japan’s purchase of some of the islands from their private Japanese owners two weeks ago sparked sometimes violent protests in China that targeted Japanese-owned stores and factories.

Noda defended the purchase as an at-tempt to ensure their “stable management,” but conceded “it seems that China has yet to understand that.”

ATHENS, Greece — Europe’s fragile financial calm was shattered

Wednesday as investors worried that violent anti-austerity protests in Greece and Spain’s debt troubles showed that the continent still cannot contain its financial crisis.

Denpasar (Bali Post) –

The Indonesia Farmers Group (HKTI) asked Bali Province Govern-ment to reduce importing beef and to pay more attention in developing local beef production. It seemed this importing situation has been going on for years as there are no limits to it. Head of HKTI Prof. Dr.I Nyoman Suparta, in Denpasar stated last Wednesday (26/0) that HKTI disagree the fact imported beef is needed for essentials or restaurants needs as government should be clear in making a policy that takes the side of breeders or animal husbandries.

Bali’s beef quality actually has no different to imported beef for that gov-ernment is asked to put a target so it can fulfill the beef needed in the country itself without depending in imported beef. It doesn’t mean that HKTI is anti-importing but government has to think more on how to develop further animal husbandries here to be more productive. Based on the Bali Animal Husbandry and Health Agency data it is stated the amount of imported beef in Bali needed was 1,000-1,500 tons from the total of 8,000 tons per year when actually Bali has been a cow supplier for other areas in Indonesia as much as 75,000 cows for year 2012

alone while those cut reached more than 42,000 this year.

Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Group (PHRI) Bali branch a while ago admitted that most of the ho-tels in Bali hardly used local beef compared to imported ones where it reached 80 percent of their beefs come from overseas. Head of PHRI Bali, Tjokorda Artha Ardana Suka-wati, stated that to increase the use of beef in an area needs cooperation with all sides, from breeders and tourism industries, where breeders will be able to increase their product standard so it can compete overseas as it still has a potential. Encountered when repairing his shattered boat, Suhardi said that at the time he and three colleagues were in the middle of the ocean. Even, he was about to spread his nets around 150 meters from the beach. Sud-denly, a big wave came toward him and crashed his boat. Luckily, he was

able to escape and swim to shore. Meanwhile, the boat was destroyed and scattered to the beach.

Residents who knew the boat of Suhardi rolled up by waves came and rescued him. Similarly, his three colleagues could finally swim to the shore. Meanwhile, the net

valued at millions of rupiahs used to catch fish was carried away by the waves.

“When we are going to sea, the waves were calm. However, after sailing a few hundred kilometers and I was about to throw the nets, huge waves emerged and swept my boat. Luckily, I could save myself, but my boat was destroyed,” said Suhardi.

There were no casualties in the incident, but this fisherman claimed to suffer many losses due to the disaster. The damaged boat and lost net were estimated to value at IDR 12 million. (kmb26)

Bangli (Bali Post)—

After Kidul Market, now it is the turn of forest on Mt. Batur Kintamani caught fire, though the forest fires afflicting Kintamani regularly happens every year. The fire on Mount Batur took place since Tuesday (Sep 25) around 3:00 p.m. It made residents in the vicinity of Mount Batur, es-pecially the area of Yeh Mampeh, Batur village, panicky.

A number of hotspots ap-peared simultaneously and quick-ly spread. Aside from being caused by dried twigs, the fire spread quickly because of hot weather and the wind was blow-ing strongly.

Information compiled in Kintamani on Wednesday (Sep 26) mentioned if the fire began burning on Tuesday afternoon. Residents with officials who knew the incident had actually attempted to extinguish the fire then. Due to steep terrain and a must to climbing a mountain to get to the scene, the effort to extinguish the fire could not be done maximally. Moreover, it was carried out manually like by making a hole in the ground and slapping the burning branches and trees with a twig.

The team consisted of hun-dreds of volunteers from the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Bangli, Badung, Bali Province as well as military personnel from the 1626 Ban-gli Military District and Bangli Police. The team had started to climb from the morning to a number of visible hotspots at Yeh

Mampeh, Batur village, Kinta-mani. Among the team getting involved in the effort was the Commander of the 1626 Bangli Military District, Djoni Prasetyo, while the Deputy Chief of Bangli Police did monitoring directly to the scene.

Burnout of fire allegedly aris-ing from the friction of trees and dry bushes was carried out from three lanes at Yeh Mampeh hamlet. Members of the team were in disarray because the fire in the lane two that had success-fully been extinguished flared again. Therefore, hundreds of volunteers finally came back to location of lane two.

“The fire is still going on because the burnout effort is difficult. Besides, the hotspots are located on steep terrain and hard to reach,” said Headman of South Batur, I Wayan Maliastra. He added the location of fire was far away from residential areas so the incident did not disrupt the activities of people at Yeh Mampeh hamlet and around the Mentik Hill. Nevertheless, his party had instructed the surround-ing residents to remain vigilant.

Deputy Chief of Kintamani Police, I Made Reda, with per-mission from Kintamani Police Chief, Komang Susanta, when contacted said the fire broke out at a number of points. It was un-known for sure the cause of those bush fires. Clearly, to prevent the spread of fire to residential location his party had mobilized the members with the help of volunteers and local people. (kmb17)

The airline’s meager offering, which was little more than “just bread,” was a galling experience for Ren who wondered why the carrier didn’t cut both the pretense of full service and the price of the ticket.

Her gripe highlights how Chi-nese travelers have been left out of the massive budget airline boom that has swept Asia. From almost none a decade ago, the region now has more than 50 low cost carri-ers. The fast growth of no-frills airlines such as AirAsia and the slew of recent start-ups including Singapore’s Scoot and AirAsia Japan underline surging demand in the region for affordable air travel. The rise of budget carriers in Asia follows similar expansion in Europe and North America in previous decades.

But in China, where the govern-ment still keeps tight control of the rapidly growing airline indus-try, three big state-owned carriers dominate. Aviation authorities’ efforts to shield them, as well as keep the industry from growing too rapidly and compromising safety, mean travelers like Ren pay up to twice as much.

“I’ve found that flight tickets domestically sometimes are more expensive than the international ones due to monopolization and less competition,” said Ren, a 37-year-old who runs an export business and also blogs about her travels in her spare time. Even for tickets on Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, considered China’s only

discount carrier, “their price is just as same as the big airlines” during high season, she said.

While Chinese travelers are benefiting from foreign budget airlines flying to some Chinese cities, analysts and consultants say government policy measures are preventing the domestic avia-tion market from opening up too quickly. China’s domestic market is one of the biggest prizes in Asia’s travel industry, with 264 million passengers last year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of China, which fore-casts the number will grow about six-fold by 2030.

“The domestic market in China has more or less remained a for-tress,” Xiaowen Fu, an aviation expert at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said at a recent confer-ence in Macau organized by the Sydney-based CAPA-Center for Aviation.

China’s civil aviation policy hinders the country’s budget airline industry in two ways, according to experts. First, it makes it almost impossible for a private company to start a new airline. Second, the policy lim-its growth by existing airlines, including state-run carriers, through measures including requiring approvals for new air-planes and routes.

For airlines operating in China, “they’ve got constraints whether it be on operating strategy, or what they’re allowed to do at the airports, or how they’re allowed

to recruit pilots, or what the air-port charges,” said Con Korfiatis, director of Flight Ideas Consult-ing. “So the low-cost carrier explosion in China is still being constrained.”

In contrast, discount airlines

continue to spread their wings elsewhere in Asia. Three started flying in Japan this year, including Peach Aviation and local ventures from Malaysia’s AirAsia and Aus-tralia’s Jetstar. Also taking flight in 2012 were Singapore Airlines’

Scoot, Thai Airways Interna-tional’s Thai Smile and AirAsia Philippines. Next year, Indone-sia’s Lion Air plans to start flights on Malindo Airways, a low-cost Malaysia operation, the company said earlier this month.

MADRID — The Spanish government is set to unveil more austerity amid mount-ing concerns over the country’s economic future.

Many think the measures, which are expected to include higher taxes and changes to pensions, will be a precursor to a request for help from the European Central Bank.

Recession-hit Spain has come under pres-

sure to tap an ECB bond-buying program, designed to keep a lid on the country’s bor-rowing costs. So far, the government has been reluctant to ask for help for fear of the conditions attached.

Many investors think the measures, to

emerge alongside a draft 2013 budget, will pre-empt those conditions, making it easier for the government to request help.

Thursday’s package comes in the wake of a violent protest in Madrid and big falls in Spanish stocks.

In accordance with the teachings of Hin-duism in Balinese literature, if there are children born in the Wuku Wayang the Hindu community in Bali will certainly organize a shadow puppet play. By presenting the two-dimensional art, the Balinese have confidence if such performance can exorcize and maintain a child born in the wuku wayang from all temptations. Wuku Wayang lasts for a week according to pawukon calendar of Hindu com-munity in Bali.

According to Jro Mangku Pasek Sekalan Marga, I Ketut Arthana, the life of children born in wuku wayang would always be tempt-ed by Bhatara Kala with the permission of Lord Shiva. As the son of Lord Shiva, Bhatara Kala in a manifestation of big giant would try to tempt the children with a variety of efforts. Well, to avoid the interference of Bhatara Kala, the children should be given exorcism rite by presenting a shadow puppet.

The shadow puppet presented was not an ordinary one, but belonged to Wayang Sapuh Leger or Wayang Sudamala. Both types of shadow puppet were almost the same as the shadow puppet intended for evening enter-tainment. However, in the performance of shadow puppet for exorcism rite of children born in the wuku wayang would take special storyline and offerings. By and large, the story performed usually entitled Dewa Kala or Siwa Rare Kumara. Meanwhile, the Wayang Suda-mala took the story Dewi Durga exorcised by Sahadeva.

Jero Mangku Arthana said that children born in the wuku wayang should get an exor-cism rite to release them from any danger. Otherwise, behavior of those children would be influenced by demonic behavior filled with evil passions. “If family is unable to organize the shadow puppet show, they can only invoke the holy water to purify the children from any temptation,” he said.

The ritual was usually performed coinciding with the otonan after the child was 6 months old (210 days) according to the Balinese calendar. The ritual was held in the morning, while the shadow puppet show was held in the evening. Although functioning as a ritual puppet, in the performance the puppeteer re-mained to accentuate the quality. Well, after the puppet show was over, the child was then given an exorcism rite.

Aside from functioning to exorcize children born in wuku wayang, the shadow puppet show was also held for other ceremonial events. For example, wayang lemah was presented to ac-company some ceremonies (Deva Yajña, Rishi Yajña, Manushya Yajña, Pitri Yajña and Bhuta Yajña) that put more emphases on a sacrifice. The storyline presented was adjusted to the type of ceremony held.

Well, to distinguish the shadow puppet for ritual and entertainment, the Hindu com-munity in Bali classified the shadow puppet show into three, namely the performance for wali (complementary ceremony), bebali (supporting the ceremony) and balih-balihan (entertainment). (IBP/Doc)

It was revealed by Chairman of the Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia (GIPI) of Bali, Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya, in Denpasar on Wednesday (Sep 26).

“So far, Bali has not had the guidelines whereas the basis of tourism is culture. To that end, we encourage the Bali Govern-ment to prepare a guideline for the devel-opment of culture-based tourism sector,” he said.

He said the parties belonging to policy makers should involve or at least listen to the feedback from the tourism industry per-petrators as users of the legislation product generated. The involvement of business community in policy decisions in the Bali

tourism development was aimed to make the development in the sector sustainable.

“Not on the contrary, where it is only for the sake of short-term interest causing damage that threatens the sustainability. As in the Southern Bali, especially in Kuta area, the development tends to give priority to quantity rather than quality. As conse-quence, it kindles the emergence of many hotels with cheaper rates,” he said.

According to him, the massive tourism development making the image of the Bali Island an expensive attraction will be gradually eroded by the presence of many low-cost hotels.

“Aside from damaging the image, is it

necessary to draw 10 million tourists com-ing to Bali? I think it unnecessary. Even, a restriction should be applied so that the tourists coming to Bali will not damage this region due to overloaded capacity and inadequate infrastructure,” he said.

GIPI also urged the government to stop the construction of new hotels because they created an imbalance of nature on the Bali Island. As a world’s tourist destination, Bali should have a quality tourist accom-modation inspired by cultural tourism.

“Bali tourism must be qualified by per-sistently upholding the cultural tourism. It is not a man-made tourism or tourism made by the human self,” he said.

He also said that Bali tourism should change the paradigm of mass tourism into special interest tourism. The development of special interest tourism would boost the economic growth of Bali as a whole. (kmb27)

The British-based organization, which monitors violence in Syria through a network of activists, said in a report released on Thursday that 55 people were killed in rural areas around Damascus. They included at least 40 who appeared to have been shot in cold blood in the town of al-Dhiyabia, southeast of the capital.

Other activists have put the death toll in al-Dhiyabia as high as 107, blaming Assad’s security forces for what they said was a mas-sacre. Video published by activists showed rows of bloodied corpses

wrapped in blankets. The victims shown on camera appeared to be male, from 20-year-olds to elderly men.

The Observatory also said 14 people were killed in a rebel bomb attack on a military command centre in Damascus and in an ensu-ing prolonged gunbattle between rebels and security forces.

Violence in Syria has deepened as the fight against Assad has became more militarized and the president has responded with in-creasing use of force - including regular air strikes and bombard-

ments against rebel areas. In the first nine months of the

conflict, the United Nations human rights chief said around 5,000 peo-ple had been killed. U.N. officials have given up trying to monitor the violence but the Observatory’s figures suggest five times as many people have been killed in the sec-ond nine-month period.

The Centre for Documentation of Violations in Syria, which is linked to the grassroots anti-Assad Local Coordination Com-mittees, puts the overall death toll at 27,318.

UNITED NATIONS - U.N. members appeared deeply divided on Wednesday as they sought to resolve the crisis in Mali, with France and some of Mali’s neighbors backing possible military intervention, while the United States said the West African nation must first have an elected government.

A special U.N. session on Mali, held on the sidelines of the an-nual General Assembly, was intended to devise a plan for a nation that descended into chaos in March after a military coup toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled local Tuareg rebels to seize nearly two-thirds of the country.

Islamist groups have since hijacked the rebellion in the north, imposing strict Islamic law in regions under their control and spur-ring fears that religious extremist fighters could further destabilize the region.

Islamist groups including the al Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine have carried out public whippings of alleged adulterers and destroyed UNESCO-listed shrines of local saints in the ancient town of Timbuktu, arguing such worship was un-Islamic.

“There is an urgency to act to end the suffering of the people of Mali and to prevent a similar situation that would be even more complicated in the Sahel and the rest of the world,” Malian Prime Minister Cheick Modibo Diarra told the General Assembly.

France, Mali’s former colonial power, called on Wednesday for the U.N. Security Council to adopt as soon as possible a resolution enabling military intervention in northern Mali, a call that has been supported by some West African nations that fear Mali’s chaos will spread beyond its borders.

French President Francois Hollande warned that Mali’s territo-rial integrity should be restored as soon as possible and that any lost time would only complicate matters.

He said he wanted a resolution on Mali to be approved within weeks. France has ruled out intervening directly, but has promised logistical and intelligence support.

Hollande’s calls were echoed by some of Mali’s neighbors, in-cluding Niger, whose foreign minister, Mohammed Bazoum, told delegates that only an armed intervention supported by friendly powers could eradicate insecurity in the region.

BEIRUT - More than 300 people were killed in Syria on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, in one of the bloodiest days in the 18-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. JAKARTA — Rescuers continued to search Indonesian waters Thursday for people reported missing after a ferry collided with another ship and sank, with officials fearing some were trapped in cars on the wrecked vessel.

At least eight people were killed in Wednesday’s accident, most likely drowning after jumping into the sea without life jackets, said Heru Purwanto, an official at Bakauheni port on southern Sumatra.

More than 210 passengers and crew were rescued in the hours after the accident, but an unknown number are feared missing.

The ferry manifest listed 213 passengers and crew and 78 vehicles on the ferry, but manifests are often unreliable in Indonesia because tickets are sold onboard to passengers who are never registered.

The search for survivors was continuing after many family members came forward to report the names of missing loved ones.

Some passengers were believed to be inside vehicles parked on the ferry when it sank, said Budi Harto, who heads the local disaster management agency in Lampung province. He said divers were facing a difficult task due to the location of the wreck, which was in waters as deep as 90 meters (295 feet).

The other ship in the accident was not seriously damaged. Singapore-based Norgas Carriers Pte. Ltd. said in a statement that the propylene chemical the ship was carrying did not leak and there was no pollution caused by the accident.

The accident happened about 40 minutes into the ferry’s 90-minute journey between Java and Sumatra islands.

The ferry sank 20 minutes after the captain sent a distress signal, but that was enough time to allow 10 merchant ships sailing nearby to immediately start rescuing passengers and crew, Purwanto said.

More than 80 passengers were hospitalized with injuries, including at least one in critical condition.

Ferries are a major source of transportation in Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation, with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 240 million. Sea accidents are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.

Presiding Judge Gusrizal of the country’s Corruption Court says 63-year-old Miranda Swaray Goel-tom was found guilty Thursday of bribing lawmakers responsible for vetting candidates for a top Bank Indonesia post in 2004.

Goeltom was arrested in June for conspiring with businesswoman Nunun Nurbaetie in paying $2.2 million in bribes to legislators to vote for her. She was eventually selected to the post.

The five-judge panel also fined

Goeltom $11,000.Twenty-eight lawmakers were

also convicted and sentenced to 17 months in jail last year for bribery in the case. Nurbaetie is currently serving 2 ½ years in prison for distributing the money.

AntaraJAKARTA - Vice President Boediono has stated that the government

needs a strong legal umbrella in order to effectively deal with economic crises in the future.

“The draft Financial System Safety Net (JPSK) law must be immediately approved so the country can be well-prepared for potential crises,” he said during the opening of a seminar on Indonesian Deposit Insurance Corpora-tion (LPS) here on Wednesday.

With the JPSK law in place, Boediono added, the country would have a strong legal umbrella under which it would be easier for administrative officials to make decisions in response to an economic crisis.

“If the legal foundation is not strong, everyone will be wary of taking action and it will have negative consequences,” he pointed out.

Boediono said the JPSK law was part of the government`s efforts to develop a protocol to ensure that remedial measures could be implemented efficiently and effectively at times of national crisis.

“A crisis response must be synchronized and unified. That is our experi-ence from dealing with crises in the past,” he added.

“The LPS is like a fortresses of defence during times of crisis because it guarantees the security of public funds in banks and, thereby, the public`s trust in the economy,” the vice president stated.

“The global economy is still riddled with uncertainties, so the govern-ment must remain ready to face any eventuality,” Boediono pointed out.

He said the government must pay extra attention to the financial sector, which was one of the most vulnerable sectors during economic crises.

“The financial sector is usually slow in responding to a crisis,” Bo-ediono noted.

JAKARTA — A volcano has erupted on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, spewing thick gray smoke up to 1 ½ kilometers (one mile) into the sky.

Monitoring official Suparno says Mount Marapi’s eruption on

Wednesday is its strongest since August last year, when its status was raised to level three out of four.

Suparno, who uses one name, says there is no plan for an evacu-ation because the nearest villages are far beyond the danger zone of 3 kilometers (1.6 miles) from the crater.

Marapi is among about 129 ac-tive volcanos in Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Its last major eruption in 1992 killed a climber and injured several others, including two American tourists.

Legal umbrella needed to deal with crisisMeanwhile, the quality of surface water sourcing from rivers in

Bali was gradually diminishing due to system of land use in the upstream area and it resulted in sedimentation. Additionally, the also river lived through pollution due to household and industrial waste. “In the long run, the quality of river water will decrease. Meanwhile, the water must be treated again so that it’s suitable to become raw drinking water. Our drinking water treatment system is very complicated and needs high cost to process the very low quality to high quality water. As a result, the cost is then charged to the community and they should pay a costly drinking water,” he said.

To that end, he called on the government and society to preserve the river intensively so that the quality of surface water was getting better and the PDAM could process it more easily. By doing so, the water could be sold at affordable price. He added the water flow-ing from the upstream area had to be captured as it quickly flowed into the sea. It could be done by making more reservoirs, ponds or water storages that could hold the water. “If the lowlands are dry, the lake water is quickly absorbed. But, if there are reservoir at lowland then it will be very helpful as a water reserve,” he said.

Regarding the water demand in tourist accommodation such as hotels and restaurants, Prof. Arthana said the government should issue a regulation in order that hotels and restaurants were able to meet their own needs by taking advantage of technologies such as by water desalination.

“Government should urge the hotels, especially those existing on the beach area and five-star hotels to begin using sea water so that they do not compete against the public to use the waterworks’ water,” he concluded. (kmb29)

French Open champion Sharapova, twice a Tokyo winner, was upset by Australian Stosur 6-4 7-6 in a quarter-final filled with drama and high-quality tennis.

Azarenka withdrew before her quarter-final with Germany’s Angel-ique Kerber after coming into the

WTA premier five event complaining of health issues. The Belarusian, who won this year’s Australian Open and reached the final of the U.S. Open earlier this month, had struggled to complete her third round match the previous day.

“Before the tournament I wasn’t feeling very good,” said Azarenka, who had her blood pressure checked during Wednesday’s win over Roberta Vinci.

“I had low energy and I wasn’t my-self. It wasn’t possible today. Maybe it was tiredness from the whole season.

It’s a little bit unknown what it is.”Stosur next faces Russian Nadia

Petrova, who ousted sixth seed Sara Errani 3-6 7-5 6-3 after battling back from a set and 4-1 down against her Italian opponent.

Eighth seed Stosur had won just one of her previous 11 meetings with Sharapova but seized the initiative by taking the first set when the Russian blasted a backhand long.

The Australian was taken to a tie-break in the second after leading 5-3 but won a nail-biter 12-10 on her fifth match point after a wild forehand from Sharapova.

“When you don’t take a few (chances) in a row you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Stosur, last year’s U.S. Open champion. “But I just kept trying to go for it and thank-fully it paid off.”

Hyundai has unveiled the WRC i20 it intends to use for its return to the World Rally Championship next year, at this week’s Paris Motor Show. While the company declined to go into the specifics of its return, it is ex-pected Hyundai will compete in selected events in the WRC next year ahead of a full programme in 2014.

The European-built WRC i20 is Hyundai’s first World Rally Car since 2003, and the first WRC built by the Korean com-pany itself.

The f i rm’s p rev ious p ro-gramme was run by British firm Motor Spor t Developments . Mark Hall, Hyundai Motor Eu-rope’s managing director, said the WRC was a perfect fit for Hyundai’s brand image.

“The World Rally Champion-ship is recognised as one of the most dramatic sporting series on earth,” he explained.

“It’s a spectacle filled with excitement and dynamism - the perfect embodiment of the Hyun-dai brand.

“The WRC also offers the

most technologically diverse challenge for an automotive manufacturer. Our participa-tion will demonstrate Hyundai’s engineering excellence and du-rability, and will also help to enhance our passenger vehicles in the future.”

In an official statement, Hyun-dai added: “Following its with-drawal from motorsport in 2003, Hyundai’s long-term goal was to set up and in-house WRC team in Europe and develop a perfor-mance rally car, resulting in the WRC i20’s debut in Paris

McLaren is ready to match Mercedes’ wage offer to Lewis Hamilton in a bid to further tempt the former world champion to remain at his current team. On the back of frenzied speculation about Hamilton’s future caused by Eddie Jordan’s claim that he would move to Mercedes in 2013, negotiations have been ongoing between the Briton’s management team, XIX Entertainment, and McLaren.

Although no deal has yet been agreed, high-level sources sug-gest that the wage deal on offer is no longer an issue. McLaren is believed to be offering at least, if not more, than the approximate £11.5 million per season deal that it is understood Mercedes has put on the table.

The main issue to be debated now is whether or not the greater commercial freedom that Hamilton could have at Mercedes - be-cause personal sponsorship deals are not as tightly controlled as they are at McLaren - is worth enough for Hamilton and XIX to consider it a better option.

McLaren has a number of extensive commercial tie-ups with companies like Hugo Boss that limit the personal sponsorship possibilities that are open to its drivers.

However, as Hamilton’s current deal with Reebok shows, there is scope for personal deals to be part of a McLaren package. And sources suggest the outfit may be willing to be more flexible in what it allows Hamilton to do if it guarantees securing his future.

The financial situation is also further complicated by the fact that any deals Hamilton could get at Mercedes may not be as much as win bonus possibilities he could have at McLaren. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh said over the Singapore Grand Prix weekend that he felt Hamilton appeared more focused.

When asked by AUTOSPORT whether there were any worries that the disappointment of retiring from the race would impact on Hamilton’s decision about his future, Whitmarsh said: “I have to say that Lewis has been incredibly strong. “I’ve spoken to Lewis first hand and he is in a very focused frame of mind. He came around, thanked everyone in the team for their efforts this weekend and it was a much stronger-minded Lewis that we have seen before.

“He is very focused, he knows there are 150 points that are avail-able and he knows we are going to work hard to collect all of them, or as many as we can.” Other team members were equally keen to praise Hamilton’s attitude over the Singapore weekend.

MADRID - Atletico Madrid have quietly crept up the standings to second and suddenly find them-selves being talked about as possible challengers to the La Liga hegemony of Real Madrid and Barce-lona. Fired by the goals of Colombia striker Radamel Falcao and inspired by their intensely charismatic Argentine coach Diego Simeone, they are only two points behind leaders Barcelona following Wednes-day’s 4-2 win at Real Betis.

“Scare for Barca,” blared the front-page of Madrid-based sports daily Marca on Thursday next to a shot of Falcao celebrat-ing one of his two goals in Seville.

The Europa League cham-pions, who are known a s t h e “mattress makers” and who last won the title in 1996

Adriano Galliani has expressed his delight with AC Milan’s 2-0 home win against Cagliari and believes that there is enough ability and potential in the current side to challenge for the Serie A title.

Despite losing key players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva in the summer, along with experienced veterans such as Clar-ence Seedorf and Alessandro Nesta, the vice-president has faith in the current squad and points towards the exciting options available in attack.

“Only the result mattered tonight,” Galliani said after the match. “We played better than we did in the first half. [Nigel] De Jong and [Massimo] Ambrosini in front of the defence looks like a good solution and I’ve said this to [Mauro] Tassotti and [Massimiliano] Allegri. I adored [Fabio] Capello’s Milan and my friend Leonardo played that way too.”

“We definitely don’t have a worse team than the ones we have lost to. Robinho came back tonight and [Alexandre] Pato will be back soon and with [M’Baye] Niang up front we have a lot of op-tions.” The official also praised the game’s match-winner Stephan El Shaarawy, as he believes the young attacker could develop into a top player for the club.

“El Shaarawy is a 20 [19] year-old player and both him and [Mattia] De Sciglio started tonight,” he added. “We invested a lot of money on him, but we thought and still think that he’ll be an important player. I like him a lot because he runs like a madman and I like forwards who help out the defence as well. He reminds me of Eto’o in that respect.”

Massimiliano Allegri has been heavily criticized for Milan’s poor start to the season but Galliani was quick to give the 45-year-old coach his backing.

“It’s clear that we have to find a formation that will bring the best out of the players that we have and in Allegri and [Mauro] Tassotti we have two great coaches who can do that,” he mused. “I want to thank the fans for their support in what has been a terrible start to the season.”

Assistant coach Mauro Tassotti, meanwhile, emphasized the ne-cessity of the three points, and is confident that the side’s morale has been boosted ahead of Saturday’s clash with Parma.

“It wasn’t easy tonight and it was a difficult pitch as well,” the former Italy defender noted. “Then Conti got sent off and things got easier for us. This group needed this result. We scored and we didn’t concede so we can start off from that. We can then analyse the things we didn’t do so well and make some changes to give more security to the team.

“We’re up and running now. The team is getting to know [Giam-paolo] Pazzini and getting crosses in. I hope that El Shaarawy is still a long way from where he can get to. He gave us a lot this evening in attack. I’m very happy to have won. There was a bit of luck, but it is better than bad luck.”

PARIS - Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt on Italian Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final has been immortalised in a statue now on display in Paris.

The five-metre (16 feet) bronze statue, by artist Adel Abdesse-med, captures the moment when the French captain lunged at Materazzi’s chest during extra time.

Zidane was sent off and never played international football again. France, who won the World Cup in 1998, lost the final to Italy on penalties.

Zidane later said he head-butted Materazzi because of insulting comments the Italian made to him on the pitch.

The statue is being exhibited in front of Paris’s Pompidou centre and will remain on display until Jan 7 next year.

Unbeaten Atletico lurk as early-season contenders

with Simeone in the side, have a chance for a rare taste of life at the top if Barca slip up at Sevilla on Saturday and Atletico can win at Espanyol.

Simeone told reporters after the Betis victory he and his players were not about to let their impressive early run go to their heads.

Atletico have yet to test their title credentials against Real or Barca, although their 4-1 destruc-tion of Champions League winners Chelsea in last month’s European Super Cup, when Falcao netted a hat-trick, suggests they may have what it takes to succeed on the big occasion.

“We are not paying attention to the points but to the opponents we have to play against,” said Sim-eone, a tough-tackling former Argentina captain who was a fan favourite at Atletico and also had stints at Inter Milan and Lazio. “The Spanish championship is very tough, above all to win away,” the 42-year-old added. “Our focus is already on Espanyol.”

Falcao’s double in Seville took his league tally for the season to seven in five matches, one more than Barca’s World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, last season’s top scorer with a record 50 goals.

Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo has three and Atletico fans will have to pinch themselves when they see their bitter city rivals, who have had a woe-ful start to the defence of their title, down in seventh on only seven points.

COMPLETELY FOCUSED

As Atletico celebrate an impres-sive start to the season, however,

speculation about Falcao’s future continues to swirl and the cash-strapped club may be hard pressed to hold on to him, even beyond the January transfer window. Falcao, who has a minor muscle strain and may be a doubt for Sunday’s game, is refusing to feed the rumours and said on Wednesday he was completely focused on Atletico.

“We are just thinking about each match at a

time and we are not mak-ing any general evalu-

ation,” he told reporters. “The most important thing is

the game next and we are just looking to keep getting past the

obstacle of each weekend.” Barca can make it six wins out of six at

Sevilla, before Real host promoted Deportivo Coruna on Sunday.Stuttering Valencia, down in 15th on

five points, are at home to Real Zaragoza on Saturday, when fourth-placed Malaga host Betis.

Real Mallorca have surprised by climbing up to third, level on 11 points with Malaga and Sevilla, and play at Getafe on Monday.

World leaders meeting at the United Nations have expressed concern at the continuing violence in Syria but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict, which the Observatory says has claimed 30,000 lives since March 2011.

(kmb29)

(kmb27)

(kmb17)

Chairman of the Center for Environmental Research (PPLH) of Udayana University, Prof. I Wayan Arthana, Ph.D., said the results of study indicated if the carrying capacity of water availability in Bali was very limited and Bali had been experiencing a water crisis. Balinese people were progressively more dif-ficult to get clean water and the water turned more expensive.

Fortunately, continued Prof. Arthana, Bali had four lakes such as the Lake Buyan, Lake Beratan, Lake Tamblingan and Lake Batur as water reserves. Hopefully, Bali could be free from severe drought. Unluck-ily, the lakes in Bali faced seri-

ous threats such as sedimentation or siltation. As consequence, their carrying capacity decreased.

In addition, the lakes in Bali faced a threat of eutrophication because a lot of nutrients around the lake went into the lake and caused the lake too fertile. If the lake was fertile it would be overgrown by aquatic plants such as algae. As a result, it would add the organic matter in the lake and accelerate the siltation. To that end, there should be

a comprehensive effort to keep the lake in Bali. “If the four lakes in Bali experience siltation, it is tantamount to half the water re-serves in Bali vanishing and when all springs turn dry Bali will experience severe water cri-sis,” he said. Further, he said the waterworks generally used surface water.

DEnPAsAR - From year to year, the water needs in Balinese con-

tinue to rise in harmony with the rapid rate of population growth

and massive development of tourist accommodation such as hotels and restaurants. Meanwhile, the water supplied by the Municipal Water-

works (PDAM) is often not enough in terms of quantity and quality. Even, hotels and people have to fight for the waterworks’ water.
