The Taiwanese filmmaker spoke Tues-day in Taipei ahead of next week’s 50th annual Golden Horse Awards, which showcases films from Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore and Hong Kong. The event is the equivalent of the Oscars, and Lee will be a juror selecting winners in 22 categories, ranging from Best Feature Film to Best Action Choreography.

Asked about Hollywood’s relative indifference to the Golden Horse event, Lee says that will change as the market for Chinese films grows.

“I think in 10 years’ time our market

is bigger than the Hollywood market,” he said. “So it comes naturally.”

While the Golden Horse event is a staple for Asian film fans, with glitzy local television coverage and legions of screaming fans blanketing the award venue to get a close look at their favorite stars, it has little impact outside the re-gion. A-list Hollywood personalities al-most never attend, and few films showcased here make a splash in theaters outside of Asia.

Still, Lee said, it was not necessary for the Golden Horse Awards to do any-thing special to make a bigger impact in Hollywood, because “Chinese-speaking people are probably four times more than English-speaking people.”

“I think as long as we’re influential in the Chinese-speaking world it will prevail, it will ripple out,” he said of the awards, adding that while the Golden Horse event will likely have its ups and downs “eventually, I think it will get picked up.” This year’s Golden Horse awards are scheduled to be distributed Nov. 23.

NEW YORK — Alec Baldwin probably isn’t relishing his part in this scene — a courtroom face-off with a Canadian actress charged with stalking him. Baldwin is expected to testify Tuesday in Genevieve Sabourin’s (ZHAHN’-vee-ehv sah-boor-EHN’) trial in New York City.

Prosecutors say she bombarded the actor with messages professing her love and showed up uninvited at his New York and Hamptons homes in 2012.

Baldwin told police that he’s had dinner with her but that their relationship was purely profes-sional.

She says they had a 2010 tryst and a two-way exchange of emails. Her lawyer says Sabourin wasn’t stalking the “30 Rock” star — just seeking “closure” after he stopped talking to her.

Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria, is also expected to testify. Baldwin’s spokesman has declined to comment on the trial.

Deputy of Friends of the Earth Indonesia (Walhi) of Bali Chapter, Suriadi Darmoko, observed that all this time the government’s priority in handling abrasion was only focused on the beach in tourism area poten-tially generating dollars. Meanwhile, the beaches under control of fisher-men or having no tourism potential were neglected though they were equally being hit by the abrasion.

“In most cases, the abrasion in

tourism area is much faster, so differ-ent treatment is given to the fishing beach where the abrasion is much slower. Lebih Beach, for example, is given much slower handling than the beach with great tourism poten-tial. This mindset must be changed because the abrasion treatment is for the people’s welfare. Thus, all the beaches having the potential of abrasion in Bali must be given prior-ity in the handling so they will not be

exhausted by the abrasion,” explained the man familiarly called Moko.

Moko added the government was often inconsistent with the abrasion treatment plan that had ever been made including never accommodat-ing the ideas of the observers and environmentalists related to the abra-sion handling. Even, the government seemed to give impression that it just received the feedback ‘selectively.’

DENPASAR - Abrasion hitting Bali is getting more serious. The latest data in the Bali-Penida River Agency

based on Satellite Image 2009 indicate the length of coastal abrasion reached 181.7 km throughout Bali.

Probably, this amount can increase because the recount to coastal abrasion will be undertaken next year. So far, only 93.351 km of the total beach length can have been

addressed. Meanwhile, the coastal abrasion that has not been addressed reached 88.349 km.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The regulation related to the installation of campaign attributes agreed upon since the end of last September seemed to have not been obeyed by the candidates. Until Monday morning, the joint team found hun-dreds of banners and billboards rampantly installed in public places and at a number of strategic points. Besides, the joint team doing the operation from the morning also found several large billboards installed in a number of strategic areas in Bangli.

The discipline conducted by the joint team was divided into two teams. A team conducted a search to Kintamani area and another did it downtown Bangli. The team led by a member of the Electoral Supervisory Committee Nyoman Wandri made a search to the border of Bangli town and Gianyar. As a result, the team found

hundreds of banners owned by candidates that violated sterile zones and shade trees. Additionally, the team also found a num-ber of violations on the installation of large billboard in public places, so that they were immediately dismantled.

Despite hundreds of campaign at-tributes owned by candidates could be dismantled, no sanctions were applied on the violators. Hundreds of the legislative candidate attributes dismantled had been commended in the office of the Bangli Municipal Police. “We will keep these disciplined banners in the office of Mu-nicipal Police. In case the owners would like to take them back, they are allowed, provided that they will be installed in the zones having been established,” said Nyoman Wandri. (ina)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Criminal Detective Section of Kuta Police

managed to arrest two suspects of villa break-ing, consisting of Moch Husen and Randika from Makasar, early morning on Sunday (Nov 10). Both culprits were arrested after making surveillance to the boarding room owned by Siti Kholilah, 23, on Jalan Majapahit, Kuta. Having been investigated, they also admitted to have broken in the Villa Bali Manik on Jalan Benesari, Seminyak, Kuta occupied by foreigner.

Information at police station on Monday (Nov 11) told that both culprits were boarding house mate of Siti. Actually, the victim had sus-pected the movement of the culprits. So far, the behavior of victim continued to be supervised. Well, when the victim was going out of her boarding house, it was the time for the culprits to break in the room and take a suitcase. “The victim just knew if her suitcase has vanished when going back to the boarding house,” said an officer at Kuta Police, Monday.

The victim shocked on learning as the suit-case containing clothes was no longer at place. Suspicion of the victim led to the two culprits, so the case was reported to Kuta Police. Police

officers were then doing investigation in the field and managed to capture both culprits when passing on Jalan Mataram Kuta. “Suitcase of the victim was still carried by the culprits, but it was empty. They claimed to have discarded the clothes,” explained the officer.

Nevertheless, both culprits were immedi-ately escorted to Kuta Police station for further investigation. In addition, police also searched the culprit’s motorcycle. Under the seat of the motorcycle was found an iPhone. The evidence was admitted to have been obtained by stealing. “Both culprits confessed to have broken in the Villa Bali Manik on Jalan Benesari, Seminyak, Kuta. The villa was inhabited by a foreigner. At the location, they broke in the villa and took the iPhone,” the officer added.

Section Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Detective, Wahyu Setyo, justified the arrest of the two culprits. His party was still performing further development, while checking the crime scene. Allegedly, the culprits did not only break in a dorm room and villa. “The case remains under progress. Hopefully, it can be published tomorrow (Nov 12). So, please be patient,” said the former Section Chief of East Denpasar Police Criminal Detective. (kmb21)

Bangli (Bali Post)—Operation of heavy equipment that so far

used to dredge quarry materials in Kintamani area slowly begins to be addressed by Bangli government. Currently, the government has es-tablished a socialization team and starts to as-sess the presence of all heavy equipment in the region. It targets all the heavy equipment can be disciplined and forbidden to operate again early December.

“Our target, at the beginning of December all heavy equipment in operation so far will begin to be disciplined,” said the Head of Bangli Natural Resources Agency, Made Ari Pulasari, Monday (Nov 11). According to her, the heavy equipment operating so far to dredge materials such as sand and rock posed supporting factor that accelerated the environmental degradation in the area of Batur, Kintamani.

In addition, the discipline against the heavy equipment was carried out to support the gov-ernment’s efforts in maintaining the geopark status having been recognized by UNESCO. The discipline, added Ari Pulasari, would be adjusted to the concept of geopark. “It does not mean we close it as such, but with a tolerance limit. As long as the quarry is done manually and does not have an impact on severe enough damage, or catastrophic incident, we think it still understandable,” she added.

She added the measure of environmental preservation was a follow up to the agreement

made by the Regent of Bangli Made Gianyar, Bangli Police Chief, Bangli Military District Commander, a number of regional working units as well as a number of public figures initiated on Mount Batur not long ago. On Monday, a meet-ing was planned at the BMB building of Bangli government to establish a supervising team as well as equalize perception to further make socialization throughout the quarry owners. She mentioned the team led in person by the Regent of Bangli was supported by team members such as the element of police, military, attorney as well as a number of related regional working units. “After being agreed, we will invite all the quarry owners to be given socialization related to the ban of digging. By referring to environmental laws, the activity has clearly violated. Neverthe-less, we will also be trying to find solutions for the public,” she explained.

So far, based on data collection and pre-liminary dissemination made by the government against the rampant quarry activities, her party had managed to record totally 18 units of heavy equipment operating in the region. Six of them were private property of local community, while the remaining ones were owned by residents from outside Bangli. “Actually no one objected, but there’s a little problem related to the ownership of heavy equipment. They asked for solutions to us regarding the heavy equipment costing up to billions of rupiahs. They claimed quite difficult to sell it back,” said Ari Pulasari. (ina)

Sony and Microsoft are launching their new super-powered consoles in the coming weeks. However, gamemakers at last week’s Game Developers Conference Next in Los Angeles were already contemplating outside-the-box innovations — from wearable controllers to illuminated living rooms — that might follow the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Here’s a glimpse at five big ideas pondered at GDC Next:

SEEING IS BELIEVING

While the virtual reality head-set seemed to go the way of the beeper in 1990s, updated takes on that technology have emerged that could make a big impact on the way players view virtual worlds in the future. Google Glass, Oculus Rift and CastAR are already giving early adopters a peek at images in 3D or projected in real life — all without a TV screen.

TIME WARP

Games have long explored what’s physically impossible in the real world, like instantly teleporting across space in the first-person puz-zler “Portal” or effortlessly bending time in the 2D platformer “Braid.” With higher definition graphics, new controllers and increased fidelity, expect game designers to continue to push the limits of make-believe reality.

STOCKHOLM — The number of smartphones is forecast to triple to 5.6 billion globally by 2019, accounting for more than 60 percent of cellphones.

Sweden’s Ericsson AB, the world’s largest maker of telecommunications net-works, says in a report Monday it expects smartphone traffic to grow tenfold in the next six years, with service providers in-creasing high-speed networks to deal with

the surge. Total mobile subscriptions are predicted to reach 9.3 billion by 2019.

Ericsson says annual smartphone traffic would hit 10 billion gigabytes by 2019, with videos representing some 50 percent of all data traffic. Social networking and web services would account for 10 per-cent each.

It said smartphones currently make up some 55 percent of all cellphones sold but represent only 25-30 percent of all mobile subscriptions.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana — You may never need to memorize another password. That’s the goal of researchers at Purdue University’s International Center for Biometrics Research.

Stephen Elliott is the director of interna-tional biometric research at Purdue Univer-sity in Indiana. He says iris and fingerprint scans as well as facial and voice recognition

are just a few of the tools that improve secu-rity while making lives easier. His basement lab is a place where emerging biometric technologies are tested for weaknesses before they can go mainstream.

Biometrics is already in use at one local restaurant. Chris Smith, assistant manager of KFC in West Lafayette, Indiana, says workers punch in by putting their finger on a fingerprint scanner attached to their cash register.

LOS ANGELES — The next generation of gaming is nearly here, but what about the gen-eration after that one?

In this video game image released by Valve, a scene is shown from the teleporting puzzle game “Portal 2.” Games that bend the rules of space and time were among the topics discussed at the Game Developers Conference Next at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Nov. 5-7, 2013.

IF YOU BUILD IT

The success of “Skylanders” and “Disney Infinity” has proven gamers want to merge physical and virtual worlds. The next evolution for players might be to create their very own toys or accessories utilizing at-home 3D printing technology. Imagine scan-ning an old-school “Star Wars” figure,

printing a new version then sending it to a virtual galaxy far, far away.

TOUCHY SUBJECTS

Touchscreens have revolution-ized the way users interact with devices, but their slick surfaces don’t always make for the best game controllers. Advancements in

technology that physically respond to touch — called “haptic touch” — combined with motion detection and augmented reality could bring interfaces imagined in “Iron Man” and “Minority Report” to life.

REALITY CHECK

As handheld devices become

more pervasive and projection technology is more accessible, interactivity will likely continue to leap off TV screens, as illustrated earlier this year by Microsoft’s IllumiRoom project, a conceptual system that combined a projector and Kinect sensor to augment areas surrounding a TV screen with daz-zling projected visualizations.

“From 2010 to 2013, we received many complaints from consumers. The majority of incoming com-plaints are the lack of public and social facilities. There are also complaints regarding the property promised were beyond the agree-ment,” said Director of YLPK Bali, Putu Eka Armaya, in Denpasar.

According to him, many consum-ers also complained about rogue de-velopers which ignored the security aspect. For instance, location of the housing complex was on vulnerable areas being prone to landslides and collapse because the land was a former landfill.

“Such complaints occurred wide-ly because most developers ignored the safety aspect and did not want to be responsible mainly those outside the association such as the Real Es-tate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter. At least, there were hundreds of developers to be complained,” he explained.

He said when they were proved to have violated the rights of con-sumers, the rogue developers could face five years in prison. Consumer rights and obligations of the business perpetrators, in this case the develop-

AntaraMANGUPURA - The Chairman of the

Badung Legislative Council in Bali, I Wayan Puspa Negara has proposed an initiative to save the environment by issuing local regulations.

“Environmental concerns, especially pol-lution and the destruction of the environment have always been an important issue during any development process in almost all regions of Indonesia that need to be rescued as soon as possible. This is to ensure that the country’s environment is not damaged in the future,” he said in Mangupura on Tuesday.

Wayan stated that the Badung district had a large and dense population, and was grap-pling with complex environmental issues, such as natural resource degradation, pollu-tion, natural disasters, and coastal issues.

These increasingly complex problems are a result of an unprofessional develop-ment plan based on economic and ecological interests.

The problems have accumulated over the last decade due to several environmental crises. “In the end, the cost to repair the en-vironmental damage is much more than the economic benefits that have been generated,” he pointed out.

Wayan further said that based on Law No.32 of 2009, which is related to the pro-tection and management of the environment, the local government possessed the authority within the framework of environmental pro-tection and management to restructure and enforce environmental law.

Referring to law enforcement is to grant the local government with the authority to carry out law enforcement, namely a series of preventive actions or activities to prevent pol-lution or damage to the environment through development, prevention and control.

Therefore through the Legislative Coun-cil’s initiative, the Badung district is con-sidering the establishment of regulations governing environmental protection and management in accordance with the problems faced in the area.

Meanwhile, the Badung District Head Anak Agung Gde Agung welcomed the initia-tive aimed at formulating a local regulation plan.

“I hope the meeting on the local environ-ment regulation can be reviewed immediately and imposed immediately,” he said.

He said he also hoped that the regulations will be useful for managing the environment in the richest district on the island of Bali.

Rogue developers roam in BaliBali Post

Within the past three years, Bali has been overshadowed by the rise of rogue developers. At least, Consumer Care Foundation (YLPK) of Bali records hundreds of consumer complaints related to the presence of rogue property developers during the period.

ers, had been regulated in the Law No.8/1999 regarding the Consumer Protection.

“A rogue developer violating the Law of Consumer Protection, for in-stance, in the matter of inappropriate material specifications for residential houses and public facilities as men-tioned in a promotional brochure, can be threatened with imprisonment of 5 years or a maximum fine of IDR 2 billion,” he said.

It was mentioned, the rampant reports about rogue developers occurred because they ignored con-sumer complaints. Actually, pursuant to the law, the business perpetrators were required to hear consumer complaints. “Consumer rights have been set out in the Law of Consumer Protection. All developers must com-ply with the law,” he added.

To that end, he said if there were complaints from consumers, the rouge developers were invited by the YLPK to do mediation and the developers concerned should come. When they had been invited once, twice and thrice, but did not come, there was a suspicion if the developer had been against the law and could be criminalized.

“We have commonly come across such kinds of cases in Ba-dung and Denpasar including in Tabanan,” he said.

As had been known, the rogue

developers continued to take its toll. Some victims claimed to have spent tens to hundreds of millions of rupiahs. Construction of their dream house was not finished even

though they had paid since a few years in advance. When the victim canceled the purchase agreement, the rouge developers did not re-fund. (kmb27)

Just a dozen soldiers and several police held the crowd back. Mothers raised their babies high above their heads in the rain, in hopes of being pri-oritized. One woman in her 30s lay on a stretcher, shaking uncontrollably.

“I was pleading with the soldiers. I was kneeling and begging because I have diabetes,” said Helen Cordial, whose house was destroyed in the storm. “Do they want me to die in this airport? They are stone-hearted.”

“We need help. Nothing is hap-pening,” said Aristone Balute, an 81-year-old who also didn’t get a flight. “We haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon.” Her clothes were soaked from the rain, and tears

streamed down her face. The struggle at Tacloban’s airport

is one of countless scenes of misery in the eastern Philippines since Ty-phoon Haiyan struck Friday. Only a tiny amount of assistance has arrived and the needs of the nearly 10 mil-lion people affected by the disaster are growing ever more urgent.

The official death toll from the disaster stood at 1,774 on Tuesday, though authorities have said they expect that to rise markedly. They fear estimates of 10,000 dead are accurate and might be low.

As local authorities struggled to deal with the enormity of the disas-ter, the United Nations said it had

had released $25 million in emer-gency funds and was launching an emergency appeal for money.

Tacloban, a city of about 220,000 people on Leyte island, bore the full force of the winds and the tsunami-like storm surges. Most of the city is in ruins, a tangled mess of destroyed houses, cars and trees. Malls, garages and shops have all been stripped of food and water by hungry residents.

Most residents spent the night under pouring rain wherever they could — in the ruins of destroyed houses, in the open along roadsides and shredded trees. Some slept un-der tents brought in by the govern-ment or relief groups.

Local doctors said they were desperate for medicine. Beside the ruined airport tower, at a small makeshift clinic with shattered windows, army and air force med-ics said they had treated around 1,000 people since the typhoon for cuts, bruises, lacerations and deep wounds.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Police fired live ammunition during clashes with protesting garment workers outside Cam-bodia’s capital Tuesday, killing a bystander who was struck by a bullet while selling rice and injuring at least 20 people, rights groups said.

Hundreds of workers from the SL Garment Processing (Cam-bodia) Ltd. Factory clashed with hundreds of riot police sent to block a march from the factory to the Phnom Penh residence of Prime Minister Hun Sen, accord-ing to two human rights groups.

Workers from the factory, which makes clothing for Gap, H&M and other international brands, have been protesting for months for better working condi-tions and pay.

The violence erupted after police sent five officers to ne-gotiate with the protesters, who surrounded and threatened to beat the policemen, said Chan Soveth, senior investigator for the rights group Adhoc.

It was unclear which side

started the attacks, which included police firing live bullets and tear gas to rescue their colleagues, and protesters throwing rocks and wielding iron bars and wooden sticks, Chan Soveth said.

A woman selling rice near the protest was killed by a police bullet, Chan Soveth and Am Sam Ath of the rights group Licadho both said.

Six protesters were injured, Chan Soveth said, adding that five Buddhist monks were hurt when police fired tear gas into a Buddhist pagoda where demon-strators had sought refuge. Nine other people were hurt, includ-ing youths who jumped into the clashes and bystanders.

“The crackdown conducted by police this morning against workers was very cruel and un-acceptable,” said Kong Athith, a spokesman for the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union, which orga-nized the protest. “Workers were unarmed. Why did police use live ammunition to crack down on them?” National Police officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

TOKYO — Japan’s flagging anti-nuclear movement is getting a boost from two former prime min-isters who are calling for atomic power to be phased out following the Fukushima disaster.

Former Prime Minister Junichiro

Koizumi said Tuesday that the cur-rent prime minister, Shinzo Abe, should take advantage of his high public support and sway in parlia-ment to “do the right thing.”

“Prime Minister Abe should use the power given to him to do what the majority of the people want,” Koizumi said in a speech at the Ja-

pan Press Club. “It can be achieved. Why miss this chance?”

Koizumi said that with Japan’s nuclear plants all offline for safety checks it would be easiest to begin the phase-out soon.

Abe favors restarting the nuclear plants under safety guidelines re-vised after multiple meltdowns in

Fukushima following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, con-tending that resource-scarce Japan cannot afford not to. His govern-ment is drawing up a national en-ergy policy that will likely reverse a commitment by the previous gov-ernment to phase out nuclear power over the next two decades.

Polls have shown the majority of the public, jittery over radiation risks, prefers to shift away from the nuclear plants that provided nearly a third of Japan’s power generation capacity before the accident at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, the worst since the Chernobyl di-saster in 1986.

TACLOBAN, Philippines — When two Philippine Air Force C-130s arrived at the typhoon-wrecked airport here just after dawn Tuesday, more than 3,000 people who had camped out hoping to escape the dev-astation surged onto the tarmac past a broken iron fence. Only a few hundred made it aboard; the rest were left in a shattered, rain-lashed city short of food and water and littered with uncounted bodies.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Groundwater supplies are worried to increasingly run thin if vari-ous parties do not take any real measure to conserve nature, especially in the upstream region. In order to protect the groundwater supplies, conservation to the upstream region remains to be intensified.

It was expressed by Senior Bali Plant Manager of PT Tirta Investama Yusuf Soenardi accompanied by CSR and Stakeholder Relations Nyoman Arsana at Bukian, Plaga village, Petang subdistrict, Monday (Nov 11).

Yusuf explained the groundwater was a renewable natural resource. Utilization of the groundwater, particularly the deeper groundwater, was only made by large companies because the drilling costs were relatively expensive. However, if the environment continued to be exploited the groundwater reserve would continue to diminish. “Re-serve of the groundwater, in this case the deeper groundwater, actually remains quite large. However, we still have to worry about its condition because the conservation efforts are still incomparable to the rate of development,” he said.

The most important things to note in the conservation of ground-water were the recharge area and the groundwater flow. Recharge area was the upstream region becoming the catchment and groundwater flow. Especially in Badung, there were two groundwater basins (CAT) namely the Denpasar-Tabanan and Nusa Dua.

Especially for Nusa Dua groundwater basin, said Yusuf, so far his party did not know the recharge area and the groundwater flow. As far as he knew, there was no study concerning with the recharge area and groundwater flow in Nusa Dua. “So, it’s rather difficult for us to determine where we can do conservation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Arsana revealed that conservation efforts were not just planting trees. Upland communities should also be educated and empowered. “Otherwise, people in the upstream region will protest why they are told to plant trees only while they also face water short-ages,” he said.

He explained that Aqua had a conservation and community em-powerment program called Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Bukian hamlet became one of the locations of the program in the upstream region. As last Monday, the tree planting program was conducted jointly by Aqua with Janma Foundation, Badung County, SMKN 1 Petang vocational school and local community. A total of nearly 15,000 trees had been planted since 2012. (kmb25)

It was announced by Chairman of Commission A Wayan Teren after making a site inspection to Alasarum hamlet, Bungkulan village, Monday afternoon (Nov 11). The arrival of Wayan Teren to Alasarum along with two other members of Commission A namely Ketut Susila Umbara and Dewa Putu Tjakra was to follow up the complaints of three Alasarum residents to be displaced due to construction of padmasana shrine at the hamlet.

Originally, around 10:00 a.m. last Monday, three residents of Alasarum customary hamlet, Bung-kulan village, asked for protection to the Buleleng House. They were received by Commission A in the commission office. In a meeting with the legislators, the three resi-dents comprising Nyoman Parka, Putu Seni Arini and Nyoman Dadi complained if their home would be evicted as the land would be used to build a padmasana shrine. Even, ac-cording to the decision of the Bung-kulan customary village, the homes would be executed on November 16. After hearing the complaints from the residents, Commission A then decided to make a site inspec-

tion on Monday afternoon. At Alasarum hamlet, Commis-

sion A searched for data related to the eviction issue. Besides, the Commission A also observed the construction site plan of the pad-masana shrine. According to Chair-man of Commission A Wayan Teren, in terms of the location, the development of padmasana should not necessarily evict the homes as the space between the padmasana shrine to be refurbished and the residents’ home to be evicted was far enough. “Judging from the location, the padmasana to be refur-bished is quite far from the homes of residents,” he said.

At the location, Commission A also got information from the hamlet chief of Alasarum. As in-formation provided by customary hamlet chief, the decision to dis-place the three homes had been in accordance with the process. It was mentioned the three residents had been invited to attend the meeting for several times but never came. “It is said if the three residents have been invited, but never attended the meeting,” said Wayan Teren.

To that end, Commission A re-quested the customary hamlet chief of Alasarum to delay the execution of eviction planned on November 16. According to him, the matter should be discussed again so that the atmosphere of Alasarum hamlet could be peaceful and conducive. “Execution of the eviction should be postponed. It is required a peace-ful atmosphere to build a shrine,” he said.

Aside from asking for postpone-ment of the eviction, Commission A also invited the customary hamlet chief of Alasarum, customary vil-lage chief of Bungkulan as well as other relevant parties to discuss about the issue in the Buleleng House on Tuesday. Commission A also requested to bring along the proposal of the padmasana construction getting social funding from provincial government to the Buleleng House. “We’ll see the con-tent of the proposal,” Teren said.

Previously, the residents of Ala-sarum whose home was about to be evicted had come to the home of the Chief of Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP) of Buleleng, Made Rimbawa, on Jalan Gajah Mada Singaraja, Wednesday (Nov 6). They came to express their complaint because a number of houses of residents would be evicted from customary village land by the reasons of the padmasana development.

The convict expressed disap-pointment with the verdict saying the punishment was too heavy.

Didi was arrested by police on information from Junaedi Kanio, who was nabbed by the security officers at the Ngurah

Rai airport upon his arrival from Kualalumpur.

Police found 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine worth Rp5 billion in the street in Junaedi’s luggage.

Probably, you have watched or are going to watch arja operetta or Ramayana Ballet during the visit in Bali. It would be more convenient if it is enjoyed while having dinner of Balinese cuisine. At the same time, you watch the beauty of culture and taste the delicacy of local culinary. You may hear the language spoken by players or puppeteer was not understand-able. Of course, it is Balinese language.

As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time.

At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Ja-vanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from histori-cal aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elemen-tary school to senior high school. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages.

Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Ba-linese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language

should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language.

Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal prac-tice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation.

Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings.

Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Micro-soft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinc-tion or be far left behind with the modern life.

NEW DELHI - US soft drinks giant PepsiCo announced Monday it would invest more than $5 billion with its partners in India to raise production, saying it had only “scratched the surface” of the Asian giant’s potential.

PepsiCo said the investment by 2020 in India, one of its largest markets globally, would strengthen its capabilities in such areas as manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture.

“India is a country with huge potential and it remains an attractive, high-priority market for PepsiCo,” said PepsiCo chairman Indra Nooyi.

“We’ve built a highly successful business in India over the course of many years, and we believe we’ve only scratched the surface of the long-term growth opportunities that exist for PepsiCo,” she said.

“This investment is PepsiCo’s vote of confidence in India’s future,” she said in a statement.

The announcement is welcome news for the embattled Congress-led govern-ment, which has been struggling to attract foreign direct investment in the face of corruption scandals, a weakening rupee and slowing economic growth.

PepsiCo and its bottling partners aim to more than double production capacity in India by 2020. They currently have some 38 bottling plants and three food plants in the country.

Last year rival Coca-Cola Co said it would spend $5 billion in India over the next seven years to increase its operations.

PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are competing to woo consumers in emerging markets including India and other parts of Asia, as well as the Middle East and Africa.

India’s increasingly affluent population of 1.2 billion is attracting global consumer companies despite the need to overcome bureaucracy and other hurdles.

“We are hopeful in the future that these uncertainties over fiscal issues will be resolved by the administration and the US Congress,” Abe told the US finance chief in Tokyo.

Lew, who made no comments dur-ing a short media briefing before the pair met in private, was in the Japanese capital on the first leg of an Asian tour which will also take him to Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China.

Abe’s comments follow a series of warnings from world leaders about the budget crisis in Washington last month, which stoked a 16-day govern-ment shutdown.

A catastrophic debt default was narrowly averted, but a temporary truce among warring lawmakers only pushed tough decisions about

the country’s debt and budget deficit into the new year.

Lawmakers must now hash out a more permanent deal.

Japan is the second-biggest holder of US government debt after China, with any default threatening its mas-sive investment.

Earlier Tuesday, Japanese econ-omy minister Akira Amari met with Lew and said the pair were still eyeing a deal on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations by year’s end.

Washington has been pushing for Tokyo to open up protected sectors such as agriculture, a sensitive topic with cossetted industries enjoying widespread support and wielding significant political power in Japan.

BEIJING - Chinese shoppers spent a record 35.0 billion yuan ($5.7 billion) at the country’s biggest online marketplaces on Singles Day, their operator said Tuesday, after the festival created by e-tailers to persuade the loveless to console themselves with retail therapy.

November 11 -- or 11.11 -- was proclaimed as “singles’ day” because of the number of ones in the date, with sellers promoting discounts to the nation’s singletons as well as price-sensitive buyers, and it is now China’s busiest shopping day.

Consumers snapped up everything from mobile phones to cars to diamond rings, reports said.

They paid 35.0 billion yuan on Tmall and Taobao, the two shopping platforms of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, up 83 percent on last year, the com-pany said in a statement.

That was more than 10 times the average daily turnover on the two virtual marketplaces last year, according to a research report cited by Chinese

media.More than 402 million users visited the two sites

on Monday, double last year’s number, Alibaba added.

“It was crazy buying stuff on Taobao during 11.11 -- just like picking up things for free,” said a user on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

Sales figures from other e-tailers are yet to be announced, but analysts estimated the combined value of transactions on the country’s top 10 op-erators would exceed 80 billion yuan, the state-run Economic Information Daily reported.

Bestsellers ranged from mobile phones to insur-ance policies to sweaters and underwear, and one online auto seller has sold more than 13,000 cars worth two billion yuan by Monday afternoon, re-ports said.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, a woman identified only by her surname Huang paid five million yuan as a deposit at a Tmall store for a 13.3-carat diamond ring with a 20.5 million yuan price tag.

AntaraJAKARTA - Northern Indonesia

experience high waves and significant rainfall in the next few days, though it will be minor compared to the impact of the typhoon in the Philippines, according to officials.

“The category four hurricane that struck the Philippines will also be felt in the northern part of Indonesia, such as in Kalimantan Island and Maluku,” said Chairman of Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Andi Eka Sakya.

Hurricane Haiyan struck the Philip-pines last Friday, Nov 8, causing damage on some islands.

The death toll resulting from Super-typhoon Haiyan, released by local au-thorities, continues growing, though the official tally stands at 138.

Local television ABS-CBN News quoted estimates from Tecson John Lim, administrator of Tacloban City, as saying the number of fatalities stood at 500.

Tacloban city is considered the worst-

hit area in the central Philippine province of Leyte, where Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda, struck the Philip-pines.

Some bodies were reportedly seen floating in flood waters at the height of typhoon Yolandas onslaught in Tacloban City on Friday.

Local media, citing an official from the Philippines Red Cross, said the strongest typhoon of the year is believed to have killed 1,200 people in the Philippines.

The Philippine government, mean-while, found it difficult to gather infor-mation on the typhoons impact because of disrupted telecommunication services.

President Benigno Aquino III has ordered all government agencies to in-tensify search-and-rescue operations and assure that aid reaches people affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

Further, Secretary of Interior and Lo-cal Government Manuel Roxas II has traveled to Tacloban city in Leyte and has been updating President Aquino on the situation.

According to information received from Siti Sofia, the Director of Media and Infor-mation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most Indonesian citizens living in the Philip-pines reside in the Metro Manila area, so they have not been affected considerably.

“There are 30 Indonesian students resid-ing in the Cebu area, which is one of the areas that has been severely affected by the storm,” Sofia revealed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

But Sofia further added that 16 of the 30 Indonesian students had been on their vacation leave in Indonesia, while the rest were reported to be safe, based on information received from the Indonesian Embassy in Manila.

“The fourteen students are in a safe condi-tion and are still being monitored by the In-donesian Embassy in Manila,” said Sofia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ data

pegged the number of Indonesian citizens living in the Philippines at 6,451.

The Haiyan typhoon has resulted in the death of an estimated 10,000 people and hundreds have been rendered homeless.

The typhoon that swept across the Philip-pines on Friday was one of the most powerful hurricanes in history and has left a path of destruction on some of the islands in Central Philippines.

The Tacloban area, which is located on the sea front, has become a town of debris in the wake of the typhoon’s malignancy.

Meanwhile, when asked about Indonesian aid for helping the Philippines government to overcome this national disaster, Sofia said the Foreign Ministry was still waiting for further coordination with the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

AntaraMEDAN - A total of 4,846 people have

been evacuated since Mount Sinabung in the Karo district of North Sumatra erupted a few days ago, the National Disaster Miti-gation Board (BNPB) pointed out.

The evacuees were being sheltered in 11 different places, including a church, mosque and the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) building, BPBN spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated via a short text message on Monday night.

The BNPB office in North Sumatra is continuing to provide the evacuees with emergency response aid.

Deputy North Sumatra Governor HT Erry Nuradi expressed hope that the evac-uees would abide by the instructions given

by authorized agencies, particularly the BNPB and the Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG).

Mount Sinabung had erupted again at 3.58 p.m. on Sunday, sending a cloud of smoke up to 4,000 meters into the sky in the southerly and southwesterly directions, the BNPB stated.

The volcano also spewed hot clouds, which had spread over a 1.2 kilometer radius, the agency said.

But the hot clouds had not claimed any lives as residents, who were living in a 3 kilometer radius had been evacuated to safer areas, Sutopo said.

“All the evacuees are safe,” he reiter-ated.

According to the PVMBG, the volcano had erupted five times on Sunday.

Each of the wary parties is guided in some measure by domes-tic political interests. But they also share concerns that Obama may want a breakthrough with Iran so badly that he would be willing to accept a deal that prematurely eases economic pressure on Iran and gives the Islamic republic space to pursue a nuclear weapon.

“All of us want to see diploma-cy,” Republican Sen. Bob Corker told NBC News. “But we’re also concerned about an administration that seems really ready to jump into the arms of folks and potentially deal away some of the leverage we have.”

Indeed, there’s little question Obama desires a deal with Iran, which could give him a boost dur-ing a shaky stretch in his presidency that has included the deeply flawed rollout of his signature health care law, new revelations about U.S. government spying and falling ap-proval ratings. Successful negotia-tions with Iran also could validate

Obama’s long-held belief that the U.S. should be willing to talk to adversaries without preconditions.

Obama and his advisers reject the notion that they are naive about Iran’s intentions. And they insist the world must test whether new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is serious about his announced desire for improved relations with the West.

Colin Kahl, who served as a top Pentagon Middle East official during Obama’s first term, said the very fact that the success or failure of a nuclear agreement would be so critical to Obama’s presidency ensures the administration won’t sign off on a subpar agreement with Tehran.

“The president sees preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon as not only central to vital U.S. national security interests, but also to his own legacy,” said Kahl, now a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. “They’re not going to accept a bad deal.”

Talks between Iran and six world powers — the U.S., France, Rus-sia, China, the United Kingdom and Germany — ended over the weekend without an agreement on a preliminary deal that would have set the stage for broader talks. Dip-lomats said talks broke down in part because the international powers refused to formally recognize Iran’s right to enrich uranium.

France also expressed concerns that proposed limits on Iran’s abil-ity to make nuclear fuel don’t go far enough. France also sounded alarms over a planned heavy water reactor that would produce greater amounts of byproduct plutonium, which can be used in nuclear weap-ons production. Western officials later tried to gloss over the French concerns, but their public com-ments raised questions about cracks in the international coalition.

Iran insists it is not pursuing a bomb and only wants to enrich uranium for energy and medical applications.

ROME — A witness in the Costa Concordia shipwreck trial has described how the captain jumped aboard a lifeboat, testifying how the commander wasn’t the last to abandon the rapidly capsizing luxury cruise ship.

Francesco Schettino, the captain, is being tried in Tuscany for al-leged manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing the shipwreck near the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012. Thirty-two people died in the capsizing.

Stefano Iannelli, crewman-in-training, testified Monday that Schet-tino jumped, shortly before he himself did, onto the roof of a lifeboat. Iannelli said he didn’t see any passengers still aboard. However, hours after Schettino abandoned ship, helicopters rescued people from the capsized vessel.

Iannelli said the Concordia was listing so badly that crew formed a human chain to avoid falling while they helped people.

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s government says 29 people have been killed after a bus collided with a truck in the eastern Mpu-malanga province.

Acting government spokesman Phumla Williams said Tuesday that scores of injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital after the collision Monday night.

Traffic accidents with high death tolls are common in South Af-rica, and are often blamed on negligent drivers and badly maintained roads.

In March, 24 people died when a bus veered off a road and rolled over near De Doorns, a town in a grape-growing region near Cape Town.

In other words, any inappropriate feedback with the government’s mood will be going into the box,” he explained.

Even though there were times when the government was willing to sit down together, the results of discussion would not certainly be fol-lowed up. According to Moko, Bali actually had the ability to handle the abrasion well, including improving the welfare of society at large and evenly.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers re-mained the NBA’s only unbeaten team this season after Paul George scored 23 points and Lance Stephenson had the first triple-double of his career in a 95-79 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

Indiana became the NBA’s seventh team to open the season with eight wins and no losses since 2000 — two more wins than the club’s previous best start. And they followed a familiar script in the battle between last season’s conference runner-ups by dominating the glass, dominating the second half and divvying up top honors.

Stephenson finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists. George Hill scored 13 points and Roy Hibbert added five more blocks to his NBA-leading total. Memphis was led by Marc Gasol with 15 points and Zach Randolph with 12.

San Antonio rolled to an easy 109-85 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers as Danny Green scored 18 points and Tony Parker had 14.

The defending Western Conference champions are off to a 7-1 start following consecutive wins in New York and Philadelphia.

Evan Turner scored 20 points and Spencer Hawes had 17 for the Sixers, who couldn’t give coach Brett Brown a better effort in his first game against his former team.

Atlanta’s Al Horford scored 24 points as the Hawks handed Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford a 103-94 loss in his first game back since undergoing a heart procedure.

Clifford missed Charlotte’s game last Friday night against the New York Knicks after having two stents placed in his heart. Jeff Teague had 14 points and 12 assists, while Cartier Martin chipped in with 16 points.

Nadal deservedly ends the year on top of the rankings after an incredible come-back from injury but Djokovic delivered an ominous show of force at the O2 Arena, running the man who replaced him as world number one ragged.

It was a one hour, 36 minute masterclass in power and precision from Djokovic and if anything the 6-3 6-4 scoreline flattered Nadal, who spent most of the match danc-ing to his opponent’s tune.

After a week of sell-out crowds at the spectacular Thames-side arena it was fitting that the world’s top two players should meet for the 39th time in the most prolific rivalry in the modern era and one that is eclipsing the great battles between Nadal and Roger Federer.

Both players had won all their round-robin matches before cruising through Sunday’s semi-finals.

Nadal was bidding to land the title for the first time to cap a year that saw him roar back to the top of the rankings with 10 titles, including the U.S. Open and French Open, while Djokovic was finishing the season like a runaway steamroller since losing to Nadal in the Flushing Meadows final.

Apart from a few jaw-dropping rallies, however, the fireworks were confined to those that lit up the court as Djokovic got his hands on the trophy named in honour

of the late ATP executive chairman Brad Drewett, who died this year.

“Look, the year-end number one is de-servedly in Nadal’s hands because he had two grand slam wins, the best season out of all players, the most titles,” said Djok-ovic, who in capturing the title for a third time stretched his winning run to 22.

“But next to the run that I had in 2011, this is definitely the second best I’ve had,” he told reporters.

“The most positive thing that I can take from this two and a half months is the fact that I managed to regroup after a few big losses after Nadal, especially Roland Garros, U.S. Open final and Wimbledon final.

“I’ve worked harder and played better, become an even more skilful player. This is definitely the best possible way that I can finish the season,” added Djokovic, who next week will lead Serbia against the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final. Nadal tried to put a brave face on his defeat.

“I think at the beginning he was playing much better than me, the first three games no doubt,” the Spaniard said. “After that I didn’t see the difference.” The statistics offered a clue, however.

Djokovic hit 19 winners to Nadal’s nine, committed less errors and served much better than his opponent, who threw

in two costly double faults at 3-4 in the opening set.

IMMACULATE TENNISDjokovic dominated virtually from

start to finish and despite the 17,000 crowd willing Nadal to drag the match into a decider, he was powerless to fight off an opponent who peppered the lines with relentless accuracy.

The Serb, who ceded top spot to Nadal in October, began the final as if he had a point to prove and playing immaculate tennis he raced to a 3-0 lead as an edgy Nadal struggled for timing.

Nadal finally began to get on the front foot and won the next three games as Djokovic’s level dipped briefly.

Djokovic edged back in front again and broke serve with one of the points of the tournament, a spellbinding rally in which he sprinted across the baseline to produce an inch-perfect lob, danced into the net and won a quickfire exchange of volleys before raising his fists to the crowd.

Having lost the first set Nadal could ill afford handing Djokovic a lead in the sec-ond but his forehand continued to misfire and the Serb took the invitation to seize complete control with another break of serve. Djokovic looked to be running away with it and moved in for the kill but Nadal’s pride dug him out of a deep hole.

The Spaniard saved match point at 5-3, and again when he chased down a drop shot at 5-4, but Djokovic merely sucked in some air, stared down the other end and blasted down his sixth ace before clinching victory when Nadal sent a forehand wide.

The Argentina forward sustained a left hamstring tear Sunday in Bar-celona’s 4-1 victory at Real Betis, the latest setback for a player whose reign as the world’s best footballer had been largely injury free until the end of last season.

A hamstring problem forced him to miss crucial games then as well, and Barcelona struggled without him. This season, the 26-year-old forward hurt his left thigh in August and then was sidelined for three weeks with a small muscle tear in his right thigh sustained in late September.

It’s reason for concern for both Barcelona and Argentina, whose hopes of winning next summer’s World Cup largely rest on having a fit Messi.

“It’s worrying when a player

injures himself in the same place,” Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella said after dropping Messi from the South Americans’ friendlies against Ecuador and Bosnia-Herzegovina. “Being injured so near the World Cup could be influential.”

Barcelona leads the Spanish league but will now be without Messi for up to eight games, in-cluding its last two Champions League group games against Ajax and Celtic, four Spanish League matches and the two legs of the Copa del Rey’s round of 32.

Despite his many injury prob-lems this season, Messi has scored 14 goals in 16 games. But he en-dured a four-game scoreless streak in the league — an eternity by his standards — and he hasn’t had his usual burst of speed when playing

less than fully fit.“Messi needs to stop and take

care of himself,” Barcelona team-mate Cesc Fabregas said. “I also went through a very bad year-and-a-half at Arsenal because of the same injury. I hope he recovers, and that he takes all the time he needs to make sure he’s well.”

PARIS - Franck Ribery believes he is having the best year of his career and says France should not be scared by the prospect of their two-legged World Cup playoff against Ukraine.

The 30-year-old Ribery, widely regarded as one of the main con-tenders for the FIFA Player of the Year award, is expected to be France’s main weapon when they visit Ukraine on Friday.

The winger was in the French squad which needed a controversial goal to draw 1-1 at home against Ireland thanks to Thierry Henry’s ‘handball’ goal and qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

But Ribery, who has scored four times and set up four more of the team’s last 13 goals, said France should not worry about the

pressure.“Playoffs have nothing to do

with other matches and the envi-ronment will be difficult too but we’ll have to be relaxed, not to be scared,” Ribery told a news confer-ence at the team’s Clairefontaine training base, near Paris.

“We have not to do things by halves. We have to go there to win,” he added. “We have not to tell ourselves that there’s a return leg ... we have to tell ourselves that we have the team to win there and go for it.”

In-form Ribery, who played a key role in Bayern Munich’s unprecedented treble last season, said he has reached the peak of his playing career. “I really am at my peak,” he said. “It really is my year.”

With 78 international caps to his name, a record that makes him

the most experienced player in France’s 24-man squad, Ribery knows he has to be a leader on and off the pitch. “When you turn 30, you have more experience, you are more serene, you know how to handle some situations,” he said.

“I have always been under pres-sure. But I will do everything I can to be at my best in the two legs, to make the players fell comfort-able.”

Ribery recognised that his chances of being the first French-man since Zinedine Zidane to be voted Player of the year would be boosted if France qualify for next year’s tournament in Brazil.

“The Ballon d’Or is something that makes me dream. But I say to myself ‘play your game, just do two good games and when France will be in Brazil, it will be good for you’,” he said.

AMMAN, Jordan — Uruguay has the star players and the experience of appearing for the fourth straight time in an intercontinental playoff for a spot at the World Cup, making Oscar Tabarez’ squad a heavy favorite to secure one of the last two places for Brazil 2014.

Jordan has never reached the World Cup, while Uruguay has won football’s ultimate prize twice.

The two-leg intercontinental playoff opens in Amman on Wednes-day, and Jordan’s appearance has plunged the country into a World Cup frenzy.

King Abdullah II donated $500,000 toward the preparations for “Al Nashama,” as the team is known, and royals, officials and governments agencies are uniting to support their team. Jordan Television held a one-day telethon that $2.8 mil-lion for the team.

The fever spread to the UAE where Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and HRH

Princess Haya have offered a pri-vate plane to fly the Jordanian team to Uruguay for the return match in Montevideo on Nov. 20.

Security has been tightened in Amman, traffic diverted and high de-mand for tickets has opened a black market. Police have called on fans to respect the match and players and refrain from carrying any fireworks, laser pointers or any sharp objects to the match.

Police say a strict security plan will be implemented before, dur-ing and after the match with gates opening five hours ahead of kickoff to accommodate the thousands of spectators who want to see their team make history. The Uruguayans were due into Jordan on Monday night. Practice and news conferences were scheduled for Tuesday.

Ahead of the trip, Cristian Rodri-guez told FIFA.com the squad was well aware of the tightrope they’re walking. “There must be something a little bit masochistic about us because this is the fourth time in a row that we’ve had to go through a play-off,”

Rodriquez said.Qualifying for Brazil is particu-

larly important for Uruguay, as it was the scene of the shocking win in the final game of the 1950 tournament that still lives on in the national psyche.

“Obviously we really want to go to Brazil,” Rodriguez said. “People here are always talking about that World Cup. It was a piece of history and it will always be there. The fans are really behind us, telling us we have to go there and win. But the Uruguayans aren’t getting ahead of themselves.

“We know the playoff won’t be easy,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve got a lot of players on yellow cards and there might be injuries too. Anything could happen and both games will be like finals.

“People point to the record books and speak about Uruguay being fa-vorites. But while we’ve won World Cups, Copas America and the like, we have to remember that if Jordan have come this far, then it’s for a rea-son. We have to respect them.”

Reuters BUCHAREST - Romania should look to Italian champions Juventus

for inspiration if they want to reach the World Cup in Brazil, coach Vic-tor Piturca said.

Romania, determined to end a 16-year absence from the finals, play Greece in a two-leg playoff in Athens on Nov. 15 and at home four days later. Piturca has been criticised for being ultra-cautious during the quali-fying campaign.

“Did you see the Juventus match (last night)?” Piturca asked reporters on Monday. Juventus beat Napoli 3-0 with Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba scoring spectacular goals in the second half.

“They defended with their whole team throughout the match. But when they had the ball, they attacked. That’s what I want from the Romanian team.

“We have to score a goal, or goals, in Greece but it’s a two-match playoff and we also have to be very careful.”

Piturca will be without captain Vlad Chiriches after the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back suffered a fractured nose during a 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Piturca called up Dinamo Bucharest defender Dragos Grigore to replace Chiriches and hinted Steaua Bucharest’s Florin Gardos will most probably partner Dorin Goian at the heart of Romania’s defence against Greece.

BARCELONA, Spain — Lionel Messi probably won’t play football again until 2014. Bar-celona said Monday that the four-time world player of the year has another leg injury — his third of the season — and this time needs six to eight weeks to recover. That would rule Messi out until about Christmas, when the Spanish league takes its annual winter break.

Costa withdraws from Spain squad, Llorente called upReuters

MADRID - Atletico Madrid’s Brazil-born forward Diego Costa has

withdrawn from the Spain squad for their friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa after tearing a muscle in his right leg in La Liga action on Sunday.

Costa, who was substituted in the 83rd minute of Atletico’s 1-1 draw at Villarreal, has been replaced by Juventus striker Fernando Llorente, the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) said on the world and European champions’ website (www.sefutbol.com).

Costa was the subject of a tug-of-war between Brazil and Spain be-fore he signed a formal letter last month stating his wish to play for his adopted country and was called up for the first time by coach Vicente del Bosque.

He has dual Spanish and Brazilian nationality and is second on the La Liga scoring chart this season with 13 goals, three behind Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Costa represented Brazil in friendlies against Russia and Italy in March but was left out of the squad for June’s Confederations Cup and is not tied to one country until he has played in an official competitive game.

He was the fifth Brazilian-born player to be selected for Spain following Heraldo Becerra, Catanha, Donato and most recently Marcos Senna.

BULELENG - This water recreation offers a natural spring swimming pool. Located at Sanih village, Kubutambahan subdistrict, it is approxi-mately 17 km east of Singaraja town. Sanih is famous for its water springs appearing endlessly in the southeastern corner of the pool. The springs are the underground watershed coming from Lake Batur, Kintamani.

This tourist attraction has two pools, one for adults and another for children. A few meters to the north occurs the beach that is relatively safe for swimming and other water sport activities or just lazing on the black sandy beach. Around the object have been available several small inns, restaurants and parking areas.

“The government has never accommodated all the elements related to the abrasion to sit together. It will only use the feedback of the ele-ments considered comfortable and compatible with its mood.

“Bali is capable of doing it and Bali has more resources to handle the abrasion. But, is Bali willing to do so? It’s rather difficult as it deals with the power whether the leader in Bali is willing to do it,” he concluded. (kmb32)

The verdict read out by pre-siding judge Hasoloan Sianturi on Monday was heavier than 16 years jail term demanded by the prosecutors for the suspect Didi Pakpahan.

The arrest of Junaedi led to the arrest of Yulianti, Vivi Veronika, Dewi Khumaeni, and Didi Pak-pahan.

Heavier punishment of life sentence was given to Yulianti and Vivi.

AP Photo/Valve

(kmb27)

(ina)
