J. H. Milne (Fishmerchants) Suppliers of the finest Scottish fish direct from shore to your door

Nestling on the North East tip of Scotland in the town of Peterhead with a fishing heritage stretching back to the 14th Century. It’s all weather Harbour and “Bay of Refuge” have, along with it’s long tradi-tion of fishermen and fish processing, led it to become the No 1 fish-ing port in Europe for white fish, pelagic (herring & mackerel) and langoustine (cold water prawns).

It’s against this background that the Milne family, 5th generation of fishermen, fish merchants, fish smokers and fishmongers conduct their business, with the same passion and enthusiasm as “The Trawl-ermen” as seen on TV stations lately.

The Milne family factory is less than 300 yards from Peterhead fish-market with a busy retail outlet also nearby. They also supply fish to farmers’ market.

However, in these times of recession they have decided to cut out middlemen and provide a bespoke internet fish selling business sec-ond to none. The reason for Delishfish being created.

All fish are hand-picked on auction by family then hand filleted to the highest degree of being as skinless and boneless as possible. In today’s climate of being user friendly, fish is caught, landed, filleted, skinned, smoked and or frozen all within quarter of a mile of Peter-head Fish within 8 hours. This I am sure makes us one of the most unique and efficient firms. These advantages of quality and saving money will be passed onto the customer.

We won’t guarantee to be the cheapest. We will guarantee to be the best at as reasonable price as possible.

Please don’t confuse our products with cheap and cheerful imports from places like China and Russia. Please don’t confuse our prices which will be by kilo delivered to customer, not pre-filleted weight or 700 gram parcels.

We will also endeavour to meet customers requirements with mixed boxes. Also our sizes will be as uniform as possi-ble. EG 6 to kilo as near uniform size as possible.

All fish caught and landed in Peterhead comes from sustainable stock under EU quotas, many of which are now being given MSC approval. It is with this background that the Milne family brings Delishfish to the market place.

“I have personally dealt with John Milne and the Old Smoke House for over a decade. John, his sons and staff take great pride in the quality of fish they can offer the customer, that is why I regularly buy smoked fish from “The Old Smoke House” market where I know that quality and taste will be a true eating experience. I would recommend anybody to source their seafood from the experts in Peterhead.

Madeira means ‘wood’, a name given to the I sland by the first Portuguese settlers in the 15th century, though they promptly burnt as much of the forest as they could to create arable land. Today the trees are back, 900,000 of them planted in the past decades, and as you approach this rugged but fertile island, dizzying slopes greet you with lush terraces where mango and banana groves compete with vine-yards, passion fruit and papaya trees.

TravelTravel

MadeiraMadeira

P retty as a postcard, Funchal, the capital, is a neat maze of tree-

lined avenues with mosaic pavements, shaded squares and outdoor restaurants sweeping around a glisten-ing bay. On these south-facing slopes, life is relaxed and there’s time to wander around the farmers’ market, the steep lanes draped in wisteria, the marina, or look out for the Beatles Boat turned into a restaurant, the statue of Zarco, the explorer who first set foot on the island, or that of Christopher Columbus who married a local girl. Some 2000 feet above the sea, the leafy suburb of Monte offers superb views, fragrant gardens and an iconic church where on August 15th, penitents go up the steps on their knees. Visitors prefer the cable-car but the fun way down is the tobog-gan, Madeiran-style, career-ing down the slope in a gi-ant wicker basket, swung right and left by two hand-some guys in white gear and straw hats.

Just 36 miles by 14 miles in the Atlantic, closer to Africa than to Portugal, the

motherland, this little gem of an island is surprisingly varied. All along the coast, rocks and cliffs tower dramatically above small pebble beaches pounded by the ocean. Experienced surfers head north to ride the waves but Funchal has gentle options, from coastal and dolphin-watching trips to a romantic twilight cruise on Santa Maria de Colombo, a stylish replica of Christopher Columbus’ boat. Others sail around the Desert Isles, home to wild goats, seals and thousands of sea birds while the ferry sets off for the more distant sister island of Porto Santo and its five miles of golden sands.

Back on the main island, small towns and villages are scattered along the shore, Camara de Lobos with its fishermen’s chapel and wooden boats, Calheta and its sugar plant making ‘firewater’, Porto Moniz with its bathing pools hollowed out of an old lava flow or Machico where Zarco is said to have landed. Not so far away, Torch Mountain recalls the great bonfires of the past, warning of

approaching pirates, while the world’s second highest sea cliff, Cabo Girao, rises to a staggering 1900 feet and the windswept eastern peninsula stretches into the ocean, shared by the occasional lizard and a handful of seasoned walkers.

Walking on Madeira is exhilarating and pleasant year round. Popular footpaths follow the levadas, the ancient irrigation channels still used to bring water from the humid but sparsely inhabited north to the rich farmlands of the south, with a network of over 800 miles. There are leisurely trails through the ancient laurel forest of the National Park covering two thirds of the island, past gurgling streams and water-falls, picnic spots and panoramic ‘balconies’ suspended between heaven and earth. But most challenging of all is the mountainous interior and the fabulous but head-spinning hike from Pico de Areiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak towering above a dramatic moonscape at over 6000 feet.

Edna and Mr P ….Edna and Mr P …. Easy Up! Easy Up!

[Mr P] .….. Hello Murray. How ye doing! [Murray] Hello Mr P. Fine, thank you! [Mr P] Edna’s done her back in again! Cannae get oot o’ her chair tae peel the tatties! What can I dae? [Murray] Maybe you’ll need to have oven chips! [Mr P] Aye! Very funny! But do you have them riser chairs? [Murray] Yes indeed! There are a wide range of such chairs so we would need to narrow it down to find one that suits her. For example, it’s important that the height is right both for her getting up and also when she is sitting. Most of them recline and have a rising footrest – great for having a wee snooze while you’re making the tea! [Mr P] Naw, I would nae know whit to dae. We’ve been married 55 years and she’s aye looked efter me… I’m no as bad as Willie Mackie though……

[Murray] mmmmm…? [Mr P] They came round the ither day. He wis telling me that they’d been to a grand new res-taurant. I asked him the name of the restaurant… He hummed for a while and then said “Och I cannae remember…” “but wait – whit’s the name o’ thon long stemmed flowers people give on Valentine’s Day…?” I thought fir a

while and then said “Rose?” “Aye!” he said, and then turned to his wife and said “Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we were at?”

British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA Publishing Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured.

RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you

carry this in your rucksack.

Bugs Britannica Peter Marren and Richard Mabey Determined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepy-crawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-

life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the fly-spray this summer.

British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook Camilla de la Bedovere. This is the

ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re

likely to see, both in the back-garden and beyond. Children will love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at.

You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife.

A Kestrel for a Knave Barry Hines If you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife

If you are opting for a ‘staycation’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’. Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

Not released until June 2012

The countryside is teeming with life this time of year. To

save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and

nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab

the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a

back-garden safari.

Gardening By Pippa GreenwoodGardening By Pippa Greenwood Growing PeppersGrowing Peppers G rowing your own

peppers is not much more involved than

growing tomatoes, so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential.

Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. The heavier, earlier crop will come if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory. Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels.

The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers.

Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural

light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them.

Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form.

If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once there is no danger of late frosts you can put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.

If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and

from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions.

If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into

autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and natural light.

If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. For classic chillis with bright red, finger shaped fruits try ‘Thai Dragon’.

East Neuk Edition - advertising feature

H ere are some things we do. We hide out in the bed, so we don't

have to see it. We leave the house for the day and don't come home until late. We volunteer for things to keep us out of the house. A busy person does not have time to clean and declutter. This gives you an excuse. When you walk in the door after a day of running around, fac-ing the clutter, stops you dead in your tracks. Since you don't know where to start, you do nothing.

Clutter sucks the energy right out of you. This is why I have urged you to shine your sink. Just seeing one small area that is clean and clutter free, gives you the energy to do more; I think you are begin-ning to believe me. The same way that clutter tends to grow in our hotspots, clutter free areas are contagious too. With just a small area clean, you will begin to clean and clear the areas surrounding your bright spot. Keep your counters clear as you cook. Don't let things pile up. Clean up after each dish prepared. Fill your sink with fresh hot soapy water each time it gets dirty and cold. Put out clean dish towels and dish cloths. When you get an area clean, declare it a clutter free zone. Use your hot spot preventions twice daily to keep them clear of clutter.

Our husbands and children are pushed away by this clut-ter. We allow it to alienate our family from us. Husbands hide in the bedroom, the family room in front of the tv, tinkering in the garage or they don’t come home at all. These are places of refuge. As a result of husbands protect-ing themselves from the clut-ter, you feel abandoned. Lines of communication become broken because clutter can push people apart. You all know about this. Look at what happens with your children. With clutter everywhere, they have a problem sitting still. Yes, I sincerely believe that clutter affects our ability to focus. This is a downward spiral. Clutter keeps us from focus-ing. This contributes to more clutter and chaos. We get depressed and want to hide. Things get worse and we be-come hermits. Our children are seeing our lack of struc-ture and discipline. They do not want to mind us, when we tell them to clean their room. Why should they? Our room is not clean. You will find that when you set this example, even just in one area, you will begin to see a change in your chil-dren. They will be more will-ing to help, when they see you doing something. The children want attention! When our homes are clut-

tered; we become over-whelmed, so we do nothing. Our focus is on the clutter and not on our children. Can you see this? Our poor chil-dren just want us to notice them for a while. This is when they make an even bigger mess. Any attention even negative attention; is better than no attention. You yell at them and get upset with yourself because of your mean voice and then you beat yourself up. This vicious cycle has got to stop. You are not a bad Mum, a bad wife or a bad person! The only problem is that we have allowed the enemy CLUTTER to invade our territory. It is time to take back our homes and find the peace that I know is there. You will know this too, when you clean one small area of the clutter and keep it clear. This victory will be yours and your whole family will celebrate. Set your timer for 15 minutes and practice our new habit for March! Just grab a rub-bish bag and start tossing; it is time to kick that clutter right out of our lives!

Clutter Alienates. Clutter hurts our marriages. It affects the way we feel about ourselves and makes us sluggish. When our homes are filled with clutter, we just want to flee. We do everything in our power to not have to look at it.
