Beauty Treatments Don’t risk sun damaged skin

A SPRAY TAN at JENNIFER’S BEAUTY

SALON in PITTENWEEM will have you looking sun-kissed without the sun dam-

age. Most people love being in the sun, and in moderation it can be good for you. Sunshine, as a source of vitamin D is necessary for healthy development and most people say they feel and look better with a suntan. But there’s no doubt about it, the sun damages your skin. Sun is a major cause of ageing. Up to 90% of

the effects we formerly attributed to ageing – wrin-kling, dryness, blotching, loss of skin tone, sallow skin – are all in fact sun damage. Sun protection is a vital part of skin care and

should be applied whenever you are outside – ALL YEAR ROUND. A sun screen marked with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) gives an indication of how long you can stay in the sun without burning - the higher the SPF the greater the protection. In theory, if your unprotected skin can take ten min-utes of sun without burning, using an SPF 6 means you can stay in the sun approximately 6 times longer than if you were unprotected (6 x 10 = 60 minutes). In practice things aren’t so simple. Variables include the strength of the sun, the amount of sunscreen you apply and re-apply after swimming, sweating and friction from clothes.

If it sounds confusing, it is. The vast array of products on offer with different SPF numbers (from 2 -30 and beyond) and the way they are calculated, means it is difficult to make informed choices. If in doubt about the level of protection you need, choose a sunscreen with a high SPF – this leaves an extra margin of protection for un-even application and rubbing off. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you won’t get a tan with maxi-mum protection creams. You will simply tan more slowly and more safely. If there is any hard and fast rule bred from our new consciousness of the sun’s side effects, it is surely this: Children should be protected at all times from excessive exposure to the sun. One severe sunburn before the age of 20 can double a child’s chance of skin cancer later in life. Regular use of a highly protective sunscreen for the first 18 years of life may reduce the risk of certain types of skin cancer by as much as 70%. In salon tanning has come a long way. No

more orange fake looking tans. The new genera-tion of spray tans will give you a beautiful sun kissed glow without the damage from the sun. Call JENNIFERS on 01333 311600 for an

appointment or advice.

R eaders of the East Neuk Edition, I would like to invite you to a spe-cial event which is happening

soon in Anstruther. Firstly let me intro-duce myself, my name is Chris. On the weekend of 28th and 29th May there will be a Regatta organised by the St Ayles Row-ing Club, which is based at the Anstruther Fisheries Museum as part of the Scottish Coastal Rowing project who help commu-nities build and row small boats (skiffs) in inter-community regattas. The Club are aiming to provide a well-

run regatta which will benefit both the row-ing clubs and a spectacle/visitor attraction to encourage both day and weekend visi-tors to Anstruther. Participating will be between 15 and 20

skiffs, each will have crews of five per race

so that could be in excess of 350 people involved, including supporting members. Rowers are expected to start arriving on

the evening of 27 May or early on the Sat-urday morning and will be looking for ac-commodation, meals etc in the local area. This will benefit the community as a whole in what, if successful, will become an an-nual event. There will be lots of heats on Saturday

starting at 9.30 am followed by the Finals on Sunday and the prizegiving. There are two possible courses dependant on weather/wind direction. I would love to see you at the Regatta,

please come and cheer me on! I am Chris O’Kinaird, the St Ayles Rowing Club origi-nal skiff – please shout my name as loud as you can!

Gadgets Tech For The Great Outdoors

GPS

RECORD THE EXPERIENCE

A fter a pretty terrible winter, the l o ng e r d a ys a nd wa rm e r temperatures mean most of us can’t

wait to get out of the house - and technology is happy to come with us. Whether you’re an explorer or just fancy listening to your iPod in the garden, there are plenty of high-tech ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

One of the most interesting kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the global positioning system that tells your sat-nav where you are. Portable GPS units such as Garmin’s Etrex H (around £70) enable a new kind of sport, called Geocaching. It’s a kind of electronic treasure hunt: on sites such as Geocaching.com you can discover co-ordinates of interesting things or secret stashes. Plug the co-ordinates into your portable GPS system and it tells you how to get there. It’s a great way to discover hidden historical gems or just really interesting walks that others have created for you. If you like the sound of geocaching and you own a smartphone there are several GPS-enabled smartphone apps, so for example iPhone users can pick up Groundspeak’s Geocaching for just £5.99.

You can even get an outdoor TV: sites such as P r o o f V i s i o n (www.proofvision .co.uk) will happily sell you a TV designed for outdoor use, although inevitably such sets are pricey: expect to pay around £820 for a 19-inch model. They’re clever, though, and they enable you to watch EastEnders while robots get on with the chores: the Robomow RL550 robotic lawnmower (£1,099 from Greenfingers.com) will mow the lawn while you relax!

RELAX

If you’d like to record the rough and tumble of your outdoor adventures, the GoPro Helmet Hero camera (£129 from Wilkinson.co.uk) can be mounted on a cycling helmet or other outdoor kit for hands-free snapping. There are also plenty of rugged cameras that can handle lumps and bumps, bashes and splashes: Kodak’s PlaySport camcorder (around £94) and Toshiba’s Camileo BW10 can both shoot HD video, and they’re waterproof to 2m (Toshiba) and 3m (Kodak), making them immune to splashes and rain.

One of the problems with exploring the great outdoors is that there a ren ’ t many power sockets - and some gadgets can run out of power pretty quickly. Despite the UK’s dire weather the sun pumps out enough power to make solar chargers a sensible option, and firms such as Power Traveller (www.powertraveller.com) offer everything from solar-powered phone chargers (from about £19) and gadget power supplies (from £29) to the £140 Solargorilla, which is powerful enough to charge laptop computers. Unfortunately that kind of power requires a fairly big solar panel, and the Solargorilla does look rather like a George Foreman grill. If you’d rather enjoy the outdoors in a more relaxed way, technology can help there too. Solar powered speakers (around £40 from NigelsEcostore.com) enable you to take your music with you, while the rechargeable Ion iPA03 Block Rocker (£159 from Play.com) is loud enough to stun passing birds. Alternatively, a pair of AQSound wireless speakers (£89.95 from Superfi.co.uk) enable you to transmit music from your hi-fi or other home audio system and listen to it outside without having to take any kit out with you.

T his risotto is a great way to use what I think is an often overlooked vegetable. The combination of rich, creamy risotto, velvety puree and crunchy roasted

cauliflower really showcases the versatility of the cauliflower. The dish too, has many uses - great as a starter, a vegetar-ian main, or as a wonderful accompaniment to fish, shellfish or a nice piece of roast chicken.

Recipe

MethodMethod There are three elements to this dish, the puree, a white risotto, and the roasted slices of cauliflower.

First, remove the outer leaves of the cauliflower, remove the core, and split the cauliflower into florets.

For the puree, take half the florets and cover with the milk in a small saucepan, making sure that the pieces are small enough to be submerged. Season with salt, bring to the boil, turn down to a simmer and gently cook until the flo-rets are soft (about 10 minutes). Drain, reserving the poaching liquid, then blend the cooked cauliflower with the milk, adding as much as you need to make a smooth, velvety puree - you might not need all of the milk. Taste, adjust the seasoning and set aside in a warm place.

To prepare the roasted cauliflower, cut the remaining florets into slices about half a centimetre thick, then transfer to a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Ten minutes before your risotto is finished, roast in a hot oven preheated to 220 centigrade, until the slices are brown at the edges and cooked 'al dente' - we want a crunch to contrast with the risotto.

For the risotto: 1) First bring the stock to a gentle simmer in a saucepan and keep this simmering during the rest of the cooking. 2) In a separate pan, finely chop the onions and sweat over a gentle heat with 20g of butter until soft. 3) Turn up the heat to medium, add the rice and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly so that it doesn't stick. This stage is important, as by 'toasting' the rice, you enable it to absorb hot the stock and cook more quickly later on in the process. 4) Add the wine and stir, it should boil up quite quickly as the pan will be hot. Cook until the liquid is all gone. 5) Turn down the heat and add the stock one ladle at a time, stirring constantly, and only adding a new ladle of stock when the previous one is nearly gone. 6) Continue until the rice is cooked, but with a little bite. You might not need all 500ml of the stock, but there shouldn't be much left! At this stage, we want the risotto to be quite dry, as we're about to add the cauliflower puree. 7)Remove from the heat and fold in approximately half of the cauliflower puree, then beat in the re-maining 20g of butter, cut into cubes, with the grated parmesan. Season to taste and leave for 2 minutes before serving.

To serve, spoon the risotto onto a base of warm puree and top with the roasted cauliflower slices.

Travel Review Cappadocia - Turkey

F ramed by the Taurus mountains to the south, the high plateau of Cappa-docia lies in central Turkey, a land

bristling with volcanic features, known as ‘fairy chimneys’, and carved with ancient underground cities and rock churches.

For early Christians and others who farmed the surrounding land, living under-ground was safe, cool in summer, warm in winter and whenever you needed extra space, you could just dig another room in the relatively soft stone. Stables were near the top, accessed down a ramp, while further down was a network of communal kitchens, sleeping quarters, stores, niches for oil lamps, wine cellars and chapels. The cities ran seven floors deep, often more, with air shafts, wells and millstones (complete with peepholes) which could block the tunnels in time of danger.

Many such cities remain undiscovered but 36 have been identified, a few partially opened to visitors who file through narrow passageways, stooping right down at times with the occasional moment of panic but rarely a chance to turn back. The largest city is Kaymakli, the deepest Derinkuyu. Both are on the tourist trail.

Meanwhile above ground, nature has shaped the most fantastic fairyland, eroding the soft tufa layer left by eruptions to uncover tall columns of hard rock marching through the countryside like a giant army. Some, capped with basalt, look like overgrown mushrooms, others come to a point like pix-ies’ hats, many are pierced with the dark holes of troglodyte dwellings. Large or small, these so-called fairy chimneys come in twos or threes, or family-sized groups, while here and there sculpted ridges cling to curving slopes the colour of cappuccino.

At over 1000 metres, the little town of Ürgüp is a convenient place to stay, with its share of fairy chimneys, its rock-hewn houses turned into cave hotels and on the doorstep, a whole flotilla of hot air balloons offering the ride of a lifetime. Every morning, they rise above Red Valley, packed with wide-eyed tourists, gliding high above it all or dipping down for a close-up view. Back on

land, the astonishing moonscape stretches as far as you can see, Pigeon Valley, Hunt-ers Valley, Uchisar, and when you reach the best viewpoints, cameras clicking all around, you almost forget to browse the souvenir stalls brimming with pottery, turquoise and pashmina.

But there is more to this land than caves and fairy chimneys. Not so far away among the vineyards, the Göreme Open Air Museum preserves some of Cappadocia’s finest rock-cut monasteries and churches, dating back to the early days of Christianity. Footpaths and steps lead you from one chapel to the next where wall paintings and frescoes in earthy tones depict scenes from the New Testa-ment, or St Theodore and St George slaying the dragon. Most decorations are from the 11th to 13th centuries but there are earlier examples.

Carved into rock or cliff, every chapel has a story to tell. Sandals is named after mysterious footprints, the Dark Church was a pigeon house, and you find a Snake Church, home of the dragon, an Apple Church, once near an orchard, Santa Barbara, where red lines were drawn on the vault to imitate brick, and the beautifully restored Tokali, with gleaming lapis lazuli in its newer section. At the entrance to the complex, the Nunnery rises on several floors, church and cells cut into the towering rock and just like in the un-derground cities, connected by tunnels with millstone doors. Cappadocia is indeed like nowhere else in Turkey, equally stunning above and underground.

Gardening In May By Pippa

I t’s great to be joining you on a regular basis, especially when the subject is gardening! I’ll be giving you some hints

and tips for what to be doing in your own gar-dens, letting you know what I’m up to in mine, and in the process hopefully inspiring you to get out in to the garden more, enjoy every-thing it has to offer and achieve some pretty impressive results yourself.

Welcome to May, one of the fastest mov-ing months in the gardening year. May is the month when plants just keep growing and developing. New transplants, recently al-lowed to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ after an early start in a greenhouse, wait a week or two and then POW! they’re off, and showing you their potential. Old established garden friends, their roots well down in the soil, put on new leaves, stem growth, flower buds maybe even flowers and enjoy the fact that whilst the weather has warmed up, they’ve not yet been hit by growth-restricting drier conditions of summer. It’s a month when it is hard not to feel a regular desire to grab a trowel and get out there and enjoy yourself while at the same time giving the garden and its plants the TLC that’s deserved. What bet-ter way to spend an hour or two.

With the massive surge in interest in growing your own vegetables, vegetable plants and seeds are available just about everywhere, so there are no excuses for not giving it a go. Even if time is short or space at a premium, it really is worth growing a few crops – the feeling of self-satisfaction when you make that first harvest is just SO good....not to mention the taste of the crops themselves. At this time of year you can sow seeds of many vegetables direct into the soil or large pots of multi-purpose compost. Try your hand at climbing French beans, dwarf French beans, runner beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach or peas. It is a bit late to raise your own courgettes, squash, tomatoes or peppers from seed, but there should be plenty of young plants available in local nurs-eries or garden centres – just make sure you buy a variety of tomato or peppersuitable for growing outdoors if you do not have a green-

house. It is worth spending a few minutes

to check flower beds and borders, however small or large, as at this time of year they are a hive of activity. I just have masses of twiggy pea-sticks (well branched prunings will do) and have driven them in around the edges of several herbaceous perennials. So many of these lovely plants are inclined to flop disastrously later in the year, but sup-ported subtly now, they’ll remain upright.

With most of the gardening year ahead feeding makes sense too. So whether you have a well-stocked compost heap, or prefer to use fertilisers from the garden centre, apply them now so that your flowers, fruits and veg have a chance to make best use of them.

Golden Rules:

• Make sure that seedlings and young plants get enough natural light.

• Gradually harden off young plants before planting them out.

• In warmer areas, start to plant out more tender crops, but protect with cloches at first.

• Tomatoes in containers need regular feed-ing with a liquid tomato food.

Treat yourself to some summer bedding for

a really lively terrace-container, but check the forecast carefully before planting them out.

Flylady, Marla Cilley

FACE The Music

E very time we turn around we are slammed in our face with the fact that our economy is in a reces-

sion. What we think about we bring about. I am not about to allow some talking head to tell me how I am doing financially. I know what is going on with my cheque book bal-ance and I know where my money is going. I don’t have to rely on someone else to tell me what to think. I am armed with my own num-bers and can think for myself. Who knows why the media has decided to

jump on this bandwagon, but we don’t have to follow it all the way to the poor house. We are in control and all we have to do is FACE our own numbers and adjust our spending. FACE stands for Financial Awareness

Continually Empowers. When we know the numbers we are in charge. When we allow the talking heads to tell us what our bank balance is then we are no better than an ostrich sticking its head into the sand. By the way an ostrich is smarter than that and this is a myth. Are you scared to look at your cheque

book balance? Do you know where you are spending your hard earned money? We only have so much money in our bucket. When you don’t know where your money is going then you are carrying all your money in a bucket filled with holes. No wonder you feel poor! You are not in control! Your emotions are? You feel sorry for yourself, so you head

down to get a café mocha to drown your sad feelings. Well guess what after you consume that over-priced, over sugared caffeinated cup of coffee, your bank account suffers too and so does your waistline! I have even heard on television of people taking a job at a well known coffee house to get their coffee fix for free. How sad is that! Creative but is it really free if you have to drive there and take time away from your family to get your coffee addiction satisfied. Why not make it yourself? I know what it is like to be poor. My car has

been my home, I have slept at the box office

that I ran and show-ered at a friend’s house. I have had 13 cents to my name and have not known how I was going to pay for a flat tire to be fixed. This is not a fun place to be. I thank God that I am not there any longer but He taught me a great lesson; To do what I could with what I had to make the best of my situation. There was only one point when I suc-

cumbed to tears. I quickly realized that those tears were lack of faith in God and the com-mon sense He gave me. I pulled myself up with the help of some wonderful people who reached out to me at my lowest. I had to be willing to ask for help in order to give them the opportunity to lend a hand. They were the people at the Charlie’s Tire who notice that in order to get the flat tire out of the trunk, they had to move a bunch of imperfect sweatshirts my brother-in-law had put there for me to get rid of for him. It just happened to be a very cold day in February. I had al-ready told Mr Charlie and his son that I didn’t have any money and they told me not to worry that we would figure something out. About that time one of the guys from the shop came in and wanted to buy a sweat shirt. In only a few minutes I had $200 in my hand by selling them for a few bucks each. This was enough to buy a new tire to replace the one that could not be fixed. We have a choice. We can believe the

people who tell us we are poor or we can know what our bank balance is and where it is going. When the talking heads say these things it reminds me of all the years we were told that we were lazy and stupid. We are neither of these! You are prosperous in proportion to what

you can do without. Can you do without the Café Mocha or the cost of the petrol to get there?
