Wow, the Olympics what can I say! I had a great day in Glasgow taking in 2 football matches - Hon-duras v Morocco & Spain v Japan. The atmosphere was great, we encountered a group of Morocco

fans, decked out in traditional dress, they’ve never missed an international game and were over the moon after Morocco scored. The volunteers were wonderful, so helpful and cheerful they did a great job. Even watching the other events on TV - I

found myself roaring at the TV with excitement as Mo Farah crossed the line in the 10K. Bring on the Paralympics! I’m sure we’ll be even more inspired by what these athletes achieve.

Lamb and

Aubergine Curry

Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

This quick curry is so easy to make and

much cheaper than a take away. We’ve

used lean lamb steaks but you could

replace the lamb with pork fillet, chicken

or tu rkey.

Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep

frying pan. Add the lamb chunks and

fry over a high heat until browned all

over. Remove the lamb from the pan

with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Add the rest of the oil to the pan and

fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8

minutes, stirring all the time until

golden. Stir in the curry paste and

cook for 1 minute then pour in the

sieved tomatoes and bring to the

boil.

Return to the lamb to the pan and

reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover

and cook gently for 25-30 minutes

until the lamb is tender. Stir occa-

sionally and add a splash of water if

needed.

Season to taste with salt and freshly

ground black pepper. Serve the curry

in warmed bowls garnished with

coriander and with chapattis, sliced

tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

• 3 tbsp sunflower oil

• 650g lean lamb steaks, cut into

chunks

• 1 onion, peeled and chopped

• 1 large aubergine, cut into cubes

• 2tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste

• 400g sieved tomatoes

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

• Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber

and onion, to serve

You’ll find jars off curry pastes in most supermarkets and they

certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a

medium-hot paste but for a really mild flavour

use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

Deep in southern Morocco,

the Valley of a Thousand Kas-

bahs is a fabled land where

ancient forts of mud and

straw mingle their reflections

in the sparkling waters of the

river Dadès. Balancing on the

rocks, sprinkled like sandcas-

tles from village to vi llage,

they take on the colours of

the earth, red, mauve, ochre

and gold. Rainstorms and

floods have long threatened

their walls but they still stand,

like proud sentinels from the

past.

In this tortured land shaped

by earthquakes, the hills are

bare, baked dry, but along the

river are almond groves, lumi-

nous patches of young wheat

and mud houses with zigzag

patterns on their walls and

ornate grills on their win-

dows. Pink roses bloom in a

secluded grove and in the

little town of El Kelaa

M’Gouna, every shop sells

rose water and scented lotion.

There, women cover their

faces as you approach but

their veils are fringed with

silver trinkets.

Where the roads from the

valleys meet at over 3000

feet, Ouarzazate greets you

with the most illustrious kas-

bah, once home of a wealthy

lord. Inside, a forbidding

maze of dark alcoves and

latticed windows recalls cen-

turies of history while storks

rattle their beaks on the bat-

tlements. Follow the road and

you could dine pasha-style in

Tifoultout kasbah, gaze at

turrets and wall tattoos in

Taour irt or explore the World

Heritage Site of Ait Benhad-

dou where the fragrance of

mint tea lingers in the air and

locals speak of Lawrence of

Arabia, Jewel of the Nile and

other epics filmed on the

spot.

Suddenly, the desert wind

rages through the streets,

shaking the fig and pome-

granate trees. Shops close

their doors and the boys fish-

ing in the river look at the sky

and pack up their gear. It’s

time to escape and climb to

the spectacular Ait Saouen

pass in the Anti-Atlas before

tackling the steep descent to

the Draa valley, stopping now

and then to allow an iguana

to crawl across the tarmac.

To many visitors who come

this far, Draa is the loveliest of

the oases on the kasbah trail.

Green palms, red earth, blue

sky, it unfolds like a tapestry

along a river draped in ole an-

der. Adobe villages and kas-

bahs grow out of the land

in a jumble of tapering towers

and passageways, courtyards

and crenellations. Men in

white djellabas sit under the

trees, putting the world to

rights, and goats and chick-

ens roam unconcerned while

in the shrine of Tamegroute,

pilgrims consult holy books

written on gazelle skin.

After the long drive south,

Zagora r ises like a mirage in

the hazy heat, a bustling little

place with a vast palmery, as

lush as velvet, and camels

offering rides along the river.

Bunches of dates glow like

gold in trees and in the late

afternoon light, the lonely

Zagora hill takes on a magical

purple shade.

Only the brave venture to

M’Hamid at end of the road

where toffee-coloured houses

are almost buried in the sand.

No more oases, no more kas-

bahs, only giant dunes en-

croaching on the land, wave

upon wave, the domain of

scorpions and snakes and

lonely caravans on their way

to Timbuktu, 52 days across

the desert.

Pippa GreenwoodPippa Greenwood The Evil WeevilThe Evil Weevil The vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) will always feature in any

gardening poll of ‘top pests ’. They’re an immensely successful pest;

there are only females and each one is capable of laying about 1,000

eggs during the summer. If you have them in your garden, whether

you like it or not, you probably need to get to know better.

How Do You Know You Have Vine Weevils? The adult vine weevil is just under 1cm long, matt

black with tiny gingery brown flecks on its wing-cases. They’re a classic weevil shape with elbowed antennae and a phenomenal ability to grip on to

nearly any surface. You’re likely to notice the notches around the leaf margins before you see

the weevil. They tend to feed in the evening or at night, usually on the lower, most accessible

leaves. The young stage weevils or grubs are about 1cm

long, creamy white in colour and often curled into a ‘C’ shape, with no legs but a gingery brown

head. You’ll find them in the compost or soil, close to the roots or tubers that they’ve been feeding

on. Unless you’re removing a plant you’re unlikely to notice the grubs; it’s when a plant suddenly starts to wilt or die, or you realise that something

is no longer firmly rooted that alarm bells should begin to ring.

What Do Vine Weevils Attack?

Vine weevils will attack nearly any plant you try to grow, particularly in containers. They’re a greater

problem on perennial plants and those with flesh-ier roots or tubers. The adult beetles emerge mostly between March

and May, but also at other times in greenhouses. The eggs are dark brown, less than 1mm diameter

and are placed close to a suitable host plant. The eggs hatch to produce the creamy coloured grubs

which feed and grow until they reach full size.

What Can You Do? Try to avoid getting vine weevils in the first place. Check plants, including their roots, carefully for

foliage damage before introducing anything new to your garden. Avoid re-using compost in con-

tainers as it might contain grubs or eggs, which are impossible to spot.

As vine weevils can’t fly, making barriers is rela-tively easy. Put a ring of non-setting glue around

the rim of containers, use a gritty mulch to reduce the number of eggs that are laid and hatch and try

creating miniature moats around the legs of

greenhouse staging, by standing each leg in a

bowl of water. Vine weevils can’t swim and won’t be able to access the plants provided the staging

doesn’t touch the sides of the greenhouse. I’m a fan of the biological nematode controls.

They’re available from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and seed

catalogues and are applied as a compost or soil drench. To work effectively, keep the area moist, so that the nematodes can move through the

compost to attack the grubs, entering their bodies and producing a bacterial infection to kill them.

The nematode controls need to have a soil or compost temperature of 5-21C and work best

Well let me tell you two min-utes can accomplish more

than you can ever dream if you will just quit whining

about what it won’t do and show yourself what it can do!

This week we are taking the

Two Minute Miracle Chal-lenge! I am calling it a Miracle

because you are going to be surprised by the results of

just those two minutes. We

refuse to believe that two minutes can make a dent in

anything we need to accom-plish! This is our perfection-

ism stopping us from even getting started.

Perfectionism is the root of

procrastination. We tell our-selves that we don’t have

time. The funny thing is that

we don’t finish the sentence to say what we have been

told our whole lives. The words should say, I don’t

have time to do it RIGHT!

Since the day we were born we had these words drilled

into our heads, “If you can’t do it right don’t do it at all!”

We learned this part well! We still hear these words in our

head. As children we were

forced to do things over and over again. No one was ever

really proud of what we did after all we were only kids.

Our parent’s expectations were not realistic. We were

told to go clean our rooms instead of giving us babystep

instructions. We were ex-pected to know what “Clean

our rooms” meant. Yet there was no example of what that

was, because our parent’s

room was not clean either.

If as children we had been told we were going to play

the Two Minute Game, we would have been so excited!

It’s a two minute sprint to see what we can do and not a

marathon that we would be doomed in the end, to re-

peat. Two minutes is not the

end of the world. It is a focus on one thing; go pick up your

dirty clothes.

Several years ago I received a testimonial from a FlyBaby

who was unable to stand for fifteen minutes. She told her-

self that she could do two minutes. Those two minutes

surprised her. They were the beginning of her journey.

Ever hour she would stand

for two minutes and shine her sink. As she gained her

strength that shiny sink radi-ated around her kitchen! Two

minutes at a time. Eventually she was setting her timer and

getting up every fifteen min-utes to do only two minutes.

taking forever. When I tell someone to do just two minutes, I get that look of “What good is

that going to do?”

Last year, after functioni ng as

Waid Junior Operatic Society for

more than 30 years, we changed

our name to Harbourl ights –

East Neu k Music Co. Although

we are affiliated to N.O.D.A

(National Operatic & Dramatic

Association), we decided it was

time to make our group sound

more accessible to members and

audiences alike, and felt that

perhaps the “Operatic” title

sounded a bit stuffy for this day

and age. The length of our sea -

son wa s also changed to August -

March with our annual produc-

tion taking place Prior to Easter

rather than just before the sum -

mer break.

Our cast members come from all

over the East Neuk to learn stage

craft, singing, dancing and drama.

Performing on stage boost s self

confidence and teaches the

youngsters important life skills

such as sel f discipline, responsi -

bility and team building skills –

things that will help in their daily

school lives and into adult hood.

Next year’s production – “Dream

On” by Malcolm Sircom will be

performed on 20, 21 & 22 March

at Waid Centre. This a modern

musical written for young people

in an attempt to reach an audi-

ence which might never consider

that the works of William Shake -

speare were in any way appeal-ing. A version of "A Midsummer

Night's Dream" it’s dramatic,

colourful and humor ous and we

anticipate that both the company

and our intended audience will

find this extremely enjoyable.

The company starts it's season on

Wednesday 22nd August 2012,

and is open to children i n the

area (from Primary 4 up to and

including those people aged 18

and still in education). We re-

hearse every Wednesday evening

during term time from 6.30 pm to

8.00 pm up until the begi nni ng of

December, take a break until

January and then rehearse weekly

again fr om 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm

until 'showtime'. All new and

returning members are welcome

up to the October break, by

which time casting will be final -

ized and any new members must wait until the foll owing year.
