There is every chance that somewhere, carefully hidden away, there are a number of unpublished manuscripts written by A.A.Milne on the subject of his son Christopher Robin and his childhood toy, Winnie-the-Pooh. It may be a slim chance but a chance nonetheless. I have spent much of my life involved with Winnie-the-Pooh and I have met many interesting people that were one way or another connected with him. The Pooh stories became real for me when I first heard them read by the actor Norman Shelly many years ago. His readings were broadcast in Children’s Hour on the BBC light programme. Many years later, I met Norman and he took tea with me at Pooh Corner, my little shop in Hartfield. “Where are my recordings?” he said, with a hint of incredulity in his voice. He gave me the name of the record company and I quickly put the matter right! One of the delights of hearing the stories being

read was the piano music played to accompany the Hums. The pianist was David Davis known to Children’s Hour listeners for many years as ‘Uncle David’. I eventually met David at an event held by a local music society in Withyham and heard him play live. We talked afterwards and listening to his voice I was transported back to my childhood; it was an unforgettable experience.

At the time of my childhood, other than listening to the wireless, a child’s first introduction to Winnie-the-Pooh would either be from reading the books or having them read to you. Nowadays, there are videos, DVDs, the cinema and of course television. It would be fair to say that there is no escape from Pooh & Piglet; virtually every shop in every High Street in the world will have something that relates to Winnie-the-Pooh. This has much to do with the industrious work of the Walt Disney Company

but when you get right down to it, the simple truth is that regardless of how you were introduced to him, everyone loves Winnie-the-Pooh. So for me the Pooh stories first became real when I first heard them on the radio but they became special and enchanted soon after I moved to Hartfield in Sussex. I then created the Pooh Corner shop and embarked upon my own expeditions into the real Pooh Country – Ashdown Forest. The rolling heathland of the Forest is steeped in ancient history and is truly beautiful throughout all the seasons. During these happy times I have had the pleasure of meeting and guiding thousands of Pooh fans from all over the world. Fortunately, I also met Christopher Milne himself and, as I say in the dedication to my little booklet, ‘The Official Pooh Corner Rules for playing Poohsticks’: “The memories of our all too few meetings will always bring a smile to my face and a glow to my heart.”


Ashdown Forest, factually one of the best-kept secrets in the South-East, resides in the hearts of many a person the world over as the home of their much-beloved childhood story character, Winnie-the-Pooh. Indeed, when you next go abroad & mention where you live and it’s relative distance to Ashdown Forest, I would safely bet it’ll be A.A.

Dear April,

No child deserves to be bullied and bullying should be stopped before it gets seriously out of hand.

A child who is experiencing bullying must be persuaded to talk about what is happening and know that they have all your love and support to build their self-esteem. First try to find out why they are being bullied/taunted and by whom. Then have a quiet word with the teacher, who could keep an eye out to deal with and sort out the situation when it arises. Most schools have an anti-bullying policy so find out the position adopted by your child’s school.

This is a very worrying problem but try to keep it in perspective. Make sure they know what is acceptable behaviour, and ask your child to tell you when they are unhappy so that you can solve any problems together. Concentrate on building the child’s self-confidence which will help them cope with all walks of society now and in the future.

You can live for years in the northern half of East Grinstead and not know your parish church. Tucked away up Windmill Lane, it is not visible as you drive up, or more usually queue up, the London Road heading into the town. However, it is worth a visit. Its red brick exterior belies the beauty of its interior and it will give a warm welcome to anyone who come to the Parish Mass at 10 am Sunday mornings.

Around 110 years ago the town was expanding north of the railway and there was no Church of England church near enough to look after the growing community. As a result the Stenning family who owned a timber business in the area gave the land in Windmill Lane and commissioned local architect William Thorold Lowdell to design a new Church of England parish church. St Mary’s has stood on this spot ever since. It has about 3000 households in a parish which extends either side of the London Road from the railway and the Worth Way to Imberhorne Lane and Furze Lane and along the Lingfield Road as far as the Surrey border.

On the same site as the church, St Mary’s has a church hall that is well used for community events and a thriving primary school. Under the leadership of its vicar, Fr Paul, St Mary’s has a growing congregation of over 100, with many young families. The church also extends its love and care for the community with baptisms, marriages and funerals. Regular services are also held at nursing homes in the parish for those who are unable to get to church. St Mary’s tries to serve us all, from the cradle to the grave.

Although much loved, St Mary’s building is now showing a few problems of middle age. The

bell tower has just been extensively repaired and major renovation is needed to the roof, gutters and downpipes to stop water leaks. The cost of this essential work is around £100,000 and St Mary’s is vigorously fund raising so that we can continue to serve and support the local community for another hundred years. Many events, including our plant sale, a concert in the church by the school and a hog roast will be taking place in the next few months, please support them and also buy a raffle ticket if asked. Thank you for all of your help which makes it possible for St. Mary’s to support the community.

An East-Grinstead-based charity, Jigsaw4u is hosting a 70s disco night fund raiser on Friday 13th May at the Meridian Hall in East Court.

The event starts at 7.30pm and features entertainment from Not Actually Abba, 2/3rds Village People, and lots more besides – all are welcome. Tickets are priced at £15, including a delicious buffet, with drinks available from the bar or groovers are invited to bring their own.

All proceeds raised will go towards the invaluable work that this locally based national charity does in providing crucial grief support to families – in the local area and beyond – who have suffered the death of a close family member.

Among other services, the charity runs a series of free support groups throughout the year offering families the opportunity to meet other families who have also experienced a bereavement.

Jigsaw4u was established more than ten years ago. It has been based in East Grinstead since 2005 with additional offices in Chessington, Mitcham and Skelmersdale.

Gary Spurle has been working as a plumber in the East Grinstead area for over 20 years.

Having apprenticed with a local firm, “Martin Blake & Partner”, he was awarded plumbing student of the year 1992 & 1994 by his college. In 1995 he started out on his own and hasn’t looked back since.
