Testimonial:
“We employed Allzones Home Improvments to undertake an extensive refurbishment project at our home including full interior & exterior works.
Allzones handled every aspect of the project from start to finish with professionalism.
Not only did Paul Nash manage the project efficiently, he also provided creative solutions and cost-saving ideas. We were kept informed of progress and issues arising every step of the way, enabling us to maintain a sense of control over both the finished product and overall expenditure.
Paul and his team were polite and friendly at all times and kept disruption to our family life to a minimum.
We would highly recommend Allzones.”
Yours truly,Lorraine & Howard MontaguChelwood Gate

Dear ResidentsWelcome to the June edition of the East Grinstead Living.
Firstly we’d like to start by mentioning that quite a few of our advertisers are giving residents special offers on their services. This helps you by getting a “good deal” (every little helps…) and helps them as they can see feedback to their advertising.
June makes us think about Fresh Strawberries! There is a mouth-watering, simple recipe for Eton Mess, easy for even the most cooking-phobic among us.
We interview local author, Garen Ewing, about his Rainbow Orchid comic books, with their grass-roots popularity growth.
An exciting photography competition is being run for the next 3 months, in conjunction with the East Grinstead Camera Club. So for any amateur photographers out there (both adults & children) immediately turn to page 34 for more details.
Our local heritage is important and very special; the East Grinstead Society tells more, see page 32.
Finally thank you for supporting our local businesses the majority of which are right on our doorsteps! - so to speak.
Here’s to a lovely start to Summer!

Recipe by Chef Dean Samsudin at the Brambletye Hotel
This summer dessert is so easy, especially if you make the meringue in advance, or use about 4oz of good quality ready-made. We buy our strawberries straight from Tulleys Farm for a wonderfully fresh flavour. Try it with different berries during the summer months.
Ingredients200 g (7oz) ripe hulled strawberries
100g (3 ½ oz) Caster Sugar
500 ml (16 fl oz) Double Cream
Few drops of vanilla extract
Meringue1 medium egg white
65g (2 ½ oz) caster sugarPlease note: you can make more meringues and put some aside for use later.
Method(Serves 4)
1. For Meringue: In a clean bowl whisk egg white until stiff, then gradually whisk in caster sugar until it holds firm (peaks when whisk is lifted).
2. Spread meringue in even layers about ¾ inches thick on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Place in oven at lowest setting for 6 hours until dry and brittle.
3. For Puree: put ½ the strawberries in a blender with ½ the sugar and whizz until smooth, pass through a sieve.
4. Whisk the double cream with remaining sugar and few drops of vanilla extract until stiff. Break the meringue in small pieces and fold into cream with half the puree, don’t mix too thoroughly as you want a ripple effect.
5. Slice remaining strawberries, spoon cream/puree mixture into dishes, drizzle with remaining puree and scatter the chopped strawberries.
DO try this at home! Perfect for June: Eton Mess with Wild
Strawberries

Agony AuntDear Sylvia,My father, an elderly man who lives alone, recently had a stroke. We (his family) are very worried about him as he needs round the clock attention. We’d like him to move in with one of us in case something else happens to him again but he’s refusing to. He’s very independent. What would you advise?Chrissy
Sylvia says:
Dear Chrissy,
“I’m so sorry to hear about your father. It’s always such a terrible time when someone you love is ill. But I would encourage you to remember the advice given on aeroplanes – if the aeroplane crashes, put on your oxygen mask before helping other people. I know that you want to help your father, but having him live with you will put a terrible strain on you and your family. Looking after someone round the clock is exhausting – especially when you have a family to look after too. I know that you love him but sometimes the best thing for everyone is to find somewhere he can live independently and be looked after by professionals. You can visit as much as you like and be there for him but his day to day needs will be catered for by people who have the time and energy to do so. I’m 92 and know that if anything horrible happens to me, I would not want to be a burden to my family. Much love to you and your family.” Sylvia

AGE CONCERN – EAST GRINSTEAD

member & volunteer of ACEG

Age Concern East Grinstead (ACEG) was established in 1950. It’s current set-up now operates three main services; The Day Centre, Saturday Respite and the Help at Home Service.
Day Centre History & ServicesSwan Mead Day Centre was a long sought after project of the old East Grinstead Urban District Council, it was finally opened on August 31st 1974 .
Swan Mead gets its name from a field on which the Queens Road cemetery is laid, in turn taking its name from the early 18th century Swan pub which fronted the London Road, about where the pound shop is today, and which was demolished in the early 1960’s.
We have over 400 members (over 50’s) who join in activities including: exercises, computer classes, line dancing, film shows, bingo, etc! There are also various outings and events.
Saturday RespiteIn 2003 ACEG expanded its services to cater for a growing unmet need by assisting carers supporting people living with dementia. Carers can leave their loved-ones in a home-from-home environment, so they can partake in some well-earned leisure time.
The funding for this service ended in November 2010. However the Trustees have kept the service going, drawing on reserves.
Help at HomeThis service was originally delivered by Help at Home Plus (Mid Sussex) and was established, following the many requests received by older and vulnerable people who required reputable domiciliary help within their home.
Sadly funding for this was cut in April 2009 and Age concern took over this service on 2nd November 2009.
Current PositionAge Concern identified the need to update their centre to enhance the ambience and environment as it’s important that our members feel valued and appreciated. This will cost approximately £40,000+.
We hold regular outings and events throughout the year to help raise essential funds. Our next event is a Barn Dance with Fish & Chip supper on Saturday 25th June 7pm – at the Felbridge Village Hall – Tickets are £10 & a family ticket of 4, £28 - Bring your own drinks!
We have an outing arranged for 18th July to the Houses of Parliament where we will be taken on a guided tour by the Hon. Nicolas Soames followed by a tour of the Capital City.
We are keen to encourage local businesses and the community to help and support us wherever they can in our fundraising attempts to improve the lives of older people.
Quote from member Connie Jackson:
“Swan Mead is a life saver! The staff are all very friendly. I feel respected as an individual here. I like the socializing and the food is excellent!”

Please give us some background to your working life prior to the release of the Rainbow Orchid.
I’ve been working on The Rainbow Orchid in my spare time for quite a few years now, so that covers an expanse in itself! I became a self-employed commercial illustrator in 2002, and before that I worked, in reverse order, in software design, graphic design, as a hotel porter and as a porter and fork-lift driver at a mushroom farm. Throughout all of that time I drew and published my own comics, it’s only in past couple of years that it’s become pretty much a full-time occupation.
Once the Rainbow Orchid was released the response was spectacular, What happened and were you surprised?
The Rainbow Orchid initially saw print serialised in a small press comic. It had a limited readership of just a couple of hundred or so but was well-received so I decided to collect the story, all that existed of it at the time, and sell it at a London comic show where I sold all my stock in one day! As I didn’t want to reprint it I decided to publish the rest of the story on the web, and this is when my audience really began to grow. It also attracted the interest of some mainstream book publishers, which led to me getting a literary agent and then, finally, publication with Egmont, the UK’s largest publisher of children’s books.
having been met with much critical acclaim, the Rainbow Orchid’s popularity has grown very much on its own steam. Where did the original idea come from and how did it go from concept to reality?
It was one of those things that came together over a few months with several different strands eventually combining. To be honest, I got a bit fed up working on other people’s comic scripts and so I decided to abandon it all and work on a comic purely for my own pleasure, with no commercial goal in mind. I gathered together all the things I particularly loved - lost world tales, classic adventure, the 1920s, silent films, the Franco-Belgian tradition of clear line comic art - and make a story that I knew at least one person would like - me! It’s really nice that many others have enjoyed it too.
Were you inspired by any local people or places of interest?...
With The Rainbow Orchid there is a panel in volume one that includes one of East Grinstead’s old buildings (that was, in the 1920s, the Constitutional Club on the High Street), but otherwise there’s not a lot really. However, the next volume features a local landmark that also provides the book’s title. Unfortunately I can’t reveal what that is until 2012!
What is next for the Rainbow Orchid?
Volume three, which completes the Rainbow Orchid story, will be published in Holland at the end of 2011 and in the UK in early 2012. With all three volumes completed my agent will be selling the book as a complete work to more European countries

The Tale of a Comic Book Hero
We interview local author Garen Ewing
and Egmont will be publishing a special single-volume collectors’ edition as well.
and beyond the three volumes, is there another plan in the pipeline for more comics?
One interesting project I’m involved with is a book called ‘Nelson’. It’s the story of a fictional character written and drawn by 50 different British comic creators, each telling the story of a day from a year in her life, from birth (1968) to the present day (2011). All proceeds from the book are going to ‘Shelter’.
What’s the best thing about living in East Grinstead?
I’ve lived here for most of my life and never wanted to move away (I had a year in the States but missed the English weather,
believe it or not!). I love the history of the town and I love the location - the Ashdown Forest and easy access to London and Brighton in each direction. I’m not so involved in the community as I used to be, which is a shame - purely a matter of how busy my workload is at the moment - but I’ve
got really fond memories of the local band scene of the 1990s and of all the theatre productions I took part in for various local groups - all with lovely people!

The Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian has successfully completed its fund raising project to support Rotary International’s campaign to eradicate Polio from our world. The campaign known as ‘Thanks for Life – End Polio Now’ targeted the raising of £100 million by Rotary Clubs worldwide over 2 years. If achieved, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation agreed to contribute a further £200 million. The sum of £300 million is estimated by The World Health Organisation as being needed to undertake the immunisation of all the children in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria where this horrid crippling disease is still prevalent.
In October 2010, as part of an initiative known as ‘Focus on the Crocus’, the Club distributed 4,000 purple crocus bulbs amongst the schools in the town. The concept was that the bulbs would bloom in February at the time schools were asked to consider events to raise funds for the Polio eradication campaign. Thursday 17th February was deemed to be ‘Purple Pinkie’ Day. The name
chosen as children immunised against Polio are marked with a purple dye on the little finger of their right hand. The pupil’s response was excellent. Both at Sackville and Imberhorne the students raised over £2,000 and a special purple quiz, run by the Sackville staff, added a further £500. Estcots, Halsford Park and Blackwell Primary schools also held special events to swell the fund raising total to £5,600.
Adding this sum to the monies raised from an auction of promises in 2010, the Club has been able to donate nearly £16,000 to the eradication of Polio. Worldwide, Rotary International will achieve its
target sum so the final phase of Polio eradication should be completed by 2013.
The Club also celebrated its 25th Anniversary on 7th May with a Dinner Dance at the Felbridge Hotel. The Club’s 32 members were joined by dignitaries, their families and friends, bringing the number to over 170. The speeches reflected that in local, national and international projects, well over 1million people have benefited from the Club’s fund raising activities. terry, meridian Fm dJ, celebrated his 40th birthday in april and what better way to commemorate this milestone than to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane at a height of around 10,000ft for charity!!!!
He’s raising monies for NDCS (The National Deaf Children’s Society), which for personal reasons is very dear to his heart. The jump is inspired by his youngest daughter Alannah, 8, who is deaf and has had an electronic device surgically implanted into both of her ears to help her hear. This is a way of showing his support for the charity.
Terry will train for a day-and-a half before his solo jump on July 24 in Maidstone, Kent. He will free fall at 120mph before pulling his parachute cord.
Although the intrepid Terry is feeling slightly nervous he hopes the training will make him more confident. Fundraising has already exceeded his initial target with pledges of £323 and now he aims to reach £2000.
Terry is asking people to sponsor him the old fashioned, personal way and decided against setting up a website. If you feel compelled to sponsor Terry in his plight or even flight visit the Meridian FM office in Charlwoods Road, East Grinstead, call him on 07782 110619 or e-mail his work address [email protected]. Thank you.

the East Grinstead Society was founded in 1968 to care for the buildings of East Grinstead and its surroundings. did you know that over 80 listed buildings exist in the town centred on a Conservation area around the high Street?
This area has been officially designated “as of outstanding status”. Our high street is recognised as one of the longest existing stretches of timber-frame buildings in the country. Constructions are medieval in style (circa. 1340 – circa 1500) just before the great re-buildings which occurred in the Golden Age of Elizabeth I’s reign.
There are 16 ancient timber framed houses and two Grade I listed buildings: Sackville College, an almshouse founded in the early 17th Century by the Earl of Dorset and still in use, as well as Old St Margaret’s Convent, designed by G.E.Street in 1865, now converted into apartments and part of a private housing trust. Surrounding this are homes for about 23,000 residents and some of the most beautiful countryside in England.
The Society is an independent group of residents interested in the well-being of the town who monitor all proposals which may affect it’s character and quality of life. For instance, A team reviews all planning applications of which many are supported, but those with negative impacts are objected to in our advice to the town council. As an example, in February we opposed a planning application to build 117 homes at Ashplats House, on grounds of traffic congestion this would cause on Holtye Road and because the site forms no part of an integrated plan for the town.
The Society also keeps watch on strategic developments in the district, and nearer to
hand we alert Town and District Councils, where practical improvements such as footpath renewals are needed.
There is an annual schedule of events, including monthly meetings of general interest at East Court, organised town trails, guided walks and co-ordinated local Heritage Open Days. The Society supports particular community projects and awards prizes to schoolchildren. These activities are to stimulate awareness of quality of life in the town and our distinctive heritage and culture.
We are looking for like-minded people of all ages to join who care about the beautiful & unique town in which we live. Monthly Friday meetings are held at 7.30 pm in the Main Hall, East Court. Non-members, including potential joiners, are most welcome - £1.50.
Three town trails Historic High Street, 19th and 20th Century buildings and Victorian Heritage have been produced to enable everyone to enjoy the town’s heritage on foot. See our website: www.eastgrinsteadsociety.org
Caring about our Heritage
Wilmington house, 48-50 high StreetThe centre timber-framed section dates from the 16th century and the right-hand part is an early 14th century Hall House. A fine carved, moulded dais beam, dated at about 1340, visible in the passage-way, was part of the original Hall House.

Some HistoryEast Grinstead Camera Club’s inaugural meeting was held in June 1955.
Claire Field, a local schoolteacher, was the founder member and the Claire Field Cup for the B section monthly prints was donated in her memory.
Mrs Addison and her sister Miss Morter were professional portrait photographers and members in the early days. The Mesdames Morter Trophy was donated in their memory for the Portrait Print of the Year.
The Morter sisters were widely published in the 1920’s. The Keith de Lellis gallery in New York has a collection of Mesdames Morter prints. The sisters are dressed up in costumes, such as a naval captain in ‘Captain of the Good Ship’ (London 1927) and in a WW1 era winter coat in ‘Remembrance Day’ (London 1923). In an exhibition at the Houk-Friedman gallery in the 1990’s they were marketed as early precursors of famous American photographer, Cindy Sherman.
Brigadier W P B Ashton was the club’s patron for many years until 1981 and he used to host Christmas parties at Greathed Manor, Dormansland.
A small but enthusiastic group of about 20 photography lovers met in places such as the Ship Inn in West Street and a scout hall in Portland Road, but later moved to The County Grammar School (now Imberhorne Middle School ) in Windmill Lane. At first they perched on stools in the Chemistry laboratory, later moving to the Geography room.

Purpose of the club• provide photographers (both amateur and professional) with an opportunity to meet other people who share the same passion
• allow members to improve their own photography through inter- and intra-club competitions
• host presentations from speakers/photographers from across the UK (and from within the club)
The Club nowMeetings are held on Thursday evenings at 7.45pm for 8pm start in the Jubilee Community Centre, Charlwoods Road. New members are welcome.

Julie lost almost 6 stone in 7 months.
The programme was very easy to do. I didn’t feel hungry or have cravings. I am far healthier, a lot happier and my confidence has increased. I went from a size 18-20 to size 8-10. I can now buy any clothes that I like!
