A Mustard Seed By MJW #631 Listening for the Voice of Jesus

In the Transfiguration account (cf.: Matthew 17:1-9), we hear Jesus speaking twice.

Undoubtedly He spoke more, but the Gospel writer chose to include just two specific instances. First, after the miraculous apparition, He tells Peter, James, and John, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” We can only imagine what an overwhelming experience it must have been for those three chosen Apostles. It had to be at once, both terrifying and magnificent. They were witnessing not only Jesus in His glorious divinity, but they were also privileged to hear the voice of God the Father: “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” This harkens back to the scene of Jesus’ Baptism in the Jordan at the start of His ministry when the Father’s voice is heard in similar words, while the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove flies overhead.

The second words of Our Lord to the Apostles are reassurance. First, He touches them, perhaps to confirm that He is as real as He has been, and no mere ghost or vision. Then He enjoins them not to tell anyone about what they witnessed until after He had risen from the dead.

With His Transfiguration and these words, Jesus has prepared the Apostles for the end result of His impending suffering. Both were a reminder and encouragement that everything wouldn’t end with His death on the cross. He had been preparing the Twelve for this during His entire public ministry. He had come to fulfill the Scriptures. He would be victorious over death, even with the seemingly insurmountable passion He would endure by drinking from the “chalice of suffering.” (cf.: Matthew 26:39-42) Don’t we have moments like these throughout our lives? Those days (or weeks) when everything is going wrong, when it appears that nothing or nobody is on our side? This relentless winter-----extraordinary even by “typical New England winter” standards (and those who refuse to admit as much are simply ignoring the truth)----has been a test for so many of us: storm after storm, frigid temperatures, gloomy days, gigantic mounds of snow, collapsing roofs, water leaks, dangerous roads, hazardous driving conditions. We can’t even count on good weather to bring us some cheer when the tasks of the day are tedious, or nerve-wracking, or….seemingly insurmountable! Perhaps Matthew only includes only two verbal exchanges from Jesus with His Apostles because it’s not how much Jesus says, but what He says to us that is important. Pope Benedict XVI says, “The Transfiguration is a prayer event.” (Angelus, Feb. 17, 2008) Instead of always babbling in prayer to Him about what we want or need, we must listen for His voice in prayer. When we are overwhelmed with life’s challenges and difficulties, we need to hear again those words: “Do not be afraid.”

Lent is an ideal time to listen. When we truly hear Jesus, worries and woes won’t all cease. As our Holy Father continues in that same address cited above: “the Transfiguration is an anticipation of the Resurrection, but this presupposes death.” We will “pass through many tribulations in order to reach the Kingdom of God.” But we will reach it precisely in listening to God’s voice, trusting Him without fear.
