O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our s struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s children from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection. Amen.

From Fr. Gerry… “We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future.”: This is a time of great uncertainty. Things are changing so rapidly that we cannot even plan a week ahead. We have little control over the event that touch our lives. God gave us intelligence and wit as well as faith. We cannot expect that faith will make up for not using our intelligence and wit. We should act wisely and responsibly during this crisis. I have heard people say, “God will take care of me.” Faith is not a substitute for intelligence. We rely on faith to help us go beyond intelligence and wit, not to substitute for it. Use your wits and your intelligence to be safe and rely on God for the rest. Coronavirus Notices: March 16, 2020 5:00pm:

Because of limitations from local, state and national governments and the archdiocese, we announce the following: Effective immediately all public Masses and communal celebration of the Sacraments or other liturgies are indefinitely suspended.

All parish gatherings are cancelled. There will be no public gatherings. Priests will celebrate Mass privately in their

rectory. All weddings, baptisms, quinceañeras must be

postponed and rescheduled later when it is safe. No face-to-face meetings in rectory unless

absolutely necessary. If you need to see a priest, please call ahead before you come to the office.

In case of death, the priest can be at the burial. (Spacing must be observed so no more than 10 people are in one area) Funeral mass will have to be at a later time without the body. No Faith Formation Classes until it is safe. First communions and confirmation are postponed. Parents of First Communion and Confirmation students should pick up packets at the CFF office.

Confessions will still take place. Be careful to observe 6 foot spacing between individuals. No face-to-face confessions, please use the screen. We may have to suspend confessions if the situation gets worse.

We are going to try to tape our private Sunday Mass to put on the internet for you. We know that there are other places for Mass on the internet, but we felt that putting our Mass on the internet would preserve some contact with the parish. The priests will no longer make any home visits

except in danger of death. Weekly English and Spanish bulletins will be

posted on our internet site: www.divinemercyschuyler.com

Please pray together as a family that through the Intercession of St. Joseph, God in his Divine Mercy will spare us from the pandemic.

Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who had anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. So the sisters sent word to him saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.” hen Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and you want to go back there?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in a day? If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” He said this, and then told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to awaken him.” So the disciples said to him, “Master, if he is asleep, he will be saved.” But Jesus was talking about his death, while they thought that he meant ordinary sleep. So then Jesus said to them clearly, “Lazarus has died. And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe. Let us go to him.” So Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go to die with him.” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, only about two miles away. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and

Rural Southwest Deanery meeting will be Thursday afternoon April 2nd,2020 at St. Mary's, 220 W. 3st, Leigh NE beginning at 1:30pm. Please try to attend as we will be making further plans for the convention in September.

everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, “The teacher is here and is asking for you.” As soon as she heard this, she rose quickly and went to him. For Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still where Martha had met him. So when the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, presuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.” And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?” So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said this, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.” Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him.

4th Sunday of Lent “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1Samuel 16:7 How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talent and treasure here on earth.

Dear Divine Mercy CFF Families, The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is calling for communities to limit the size of public gatherings to help contain the spread of COVID-19. For this reason, all CFF classes are canceled until further notice. First Holy Communions will also be on hold until further notice. At this time, we do not know if Confirmation will be on May 12, 2020 as scheduled. Parents of First Communion and Confirmation students should pick up packets at the CFF office ASAP unless The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services issues further restrictions. These packets will allow families to continue sacrament preparations at home. We ask that all families spend time in prayer together every day to help us in this time of trial. EWTN (ewtn.com) has wonderful programs and resources available as well as Spirit Catholic radio (spiritcatholicradio.com) and Archdiocese of Omaha (archomaha.org). Know of our prayers for all of you! Sincerely, Fr. Gerald Gonderinger, Pastor

Background on the Gospel Reading As we did last week, we are reading today from the Gospel of John. In today’s Gospel, the healing of the man born blind invites us to focus on the physical and spiritual aspects of sight and light. In the first part of today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ response to a prevalent belief of his time: that misfortune and disability were the result of sin. That belief is why Jesus is asked the question of whose sin caused the man’s blindness—his own or his parents’. Jesus does not answer directly, but instead gives the question an entirely different dimension—through this man’s disability, God’s power will be made manifest. Jesus then heals the man. The healing is controversial because Jesus heals on the Sabbath. The Pharisees, the religious authorities of Jesus’ time, understood that the law of Moses forbade work (including healing) on the Sabbath. They also have trouble believing that Jesus performed a miracle. To determine whether the man was really born blind, the Pharisees question him and his parents. The man challenges the leaders of the synagogue about their assessment of the good that Jesus has done. In turn, they expel the man for questioning their judgment. The final revelation and moment of enlightenment comes when the man born blind encounters Jesus again. Having heard the news of his expulsion, Jesus seeks out the man born blind and reveals himself to him as the Son of Man. In this moment, the man born blind shows himself to be a man of faith and worships Jesus. Jesus replies by identifying the irony of the experience of many who encounter Jesus: Those who are blind will now see, and those who think they now see will be found to be blind. As in last week’s Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman, today’s reading has many allusions to Baptism. The washing of the man in the pool of Siloam is a prototype for Christian Baptism.
