A Prayer of Thanksgiving
God source and giver of all things, we give thanks on this Thanksgiving Day for the beauty of the whole
crea on.
We give thanks for the blessing of family and friends: both those gathered around this table and those who
are present only in our hearts.
We give you thanks for the food, prepared by loving hands, and for the graces you provide to nourish our
bodies minds and hearts so that we might be er serve you.
Help us to be faithful stewards of all that has been given us. May we reflect that which we have received
to all we meet, especially the less fortunate in our midst. Amen

Thanksgiving Celebra ng with a thankful heart…
Thanksgiving Day is among the na on’s finest na onal tradi ons. Indeed se ng a day aside for giving thanks to
God is not just a U.S. phenomenon as many countries worldwide celebrate harvest fes vals that express gra -
tude to God.
For Chris ans, Thanksgiving Day has special meaning, for we know that gra tude lies at the very heart of disciple-
ship. A grateful heart heralds the beginning of discipleship and opens the way to our deepest response, the desire to
return to God for the bounty of our lives.
For what do we thank our Creator? The early American colonists, who gave inspira on to the Thanksgiving Day tradi on were thankful for their very survival. Many of
their compatriots were buried in the soil of the new land, far from all that had been cherished and familiar.
Its natural to thank God when things seem to turn out the way we had hoped, when disaster is averted, when life
seems filled with abundance. Harder, perhaps, is the abil-ity to thank God for being present to us in mes of strug-
gle, failure, illness and death. But, in the heart of the Chris-an, the memory of God’s presence is comfort and gi all
its own.
If we take me to reflect on our lives, we o en discover that we are most grateful for a gi we struggled to receive.
O en we find that what has come to us in the form of hardship has a hindsight revealed itself as a gi . This is
why each days struggles and trials should be met with a hear elt “thank you”.
Meister Eckhart, a 14th century Dominican mys c, wrote, “If the only prayer you ever say is “thank you,’ that will
suffice.” At first, this might seem puzzling. What of praise and pe ons? But Eckhart knew that the most genuine
response, and indeed, the first and most spontaneous re-sponse of the heart which has discovered God, is “thank
you.” Gra tude lies at the beginning of true prayer.
As we reflect on this me of thanksgiving, let us be present to those moments when God’s gi s were hidden in shad-
ow and remember to be thankful for all.

Reflec ng on the Gospel of Luke 23: 35 - 43
Sadly, there have always been those who scoff at others or make fun of them, generally because they themselves feel
threatened in some way. Those who suffer such bullying be-havior o en feel powerless and demeaned. There may be
some comfort for such people in today’s gospel. We find here a serious case of bullying and two dignified responses that
undermine the destruc ve power of those who taunt or de-ride.
The first response is that of Jesus who refuses to retaliate when the soldiers mock him or when another convicted crimi-nal (“one of the criminals hanging there”) derides him. Anoth-
er dignified response comes from “the other” criminal. This man has the insight to recognize that Jesus is innocent. He also has the courage to challenge the injus ce of what is going on
around him. Having offered his challenge, he then turns to Jesus and addresses him by name: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” His request reveals his faith in Jesus as the human face of God. It also reveals his knowledge of Jesus’ mission, first announced in Galilee: “I must proclaim
the good news of the kingdom of God ….”
Jesus points to God and God’s reign or empire. Jesus’ criminal companion points to the reign or empire of Jesus. The reign of God and the reign of Jesus are one and the same. In turning to Jesus and pu ng his request, this criminal becomes a disciple and receives the assurance of a share in Jesus’ life with God:
“Today you will be with me…” “Jesus, remember me” is a fi ng prayer in the face of all life’s struggles. It is a prayer for
mercy. Next me we sing these words or pray them in our hearts, we might spare a thought for the one who first u ered them, a convicted Jewish criminal who had the courage to rise
above his own suffering and to challenge the unjust oppres-sion of an innocent neighbor. Like Jesus, this criminal was and con nues to be an instrument of God’s reign. His capacity to
challenge the injus ce of Jesus’ execu on might be a source of inspira on for us as we struggle to find mercy and jus ce for the Earth as well as for the innocent ones who seek asylum in our midst only to find themselves subjected to the torture of
exile and hopelessness.
The tle of today’s feast reminds us of the boundless nature of God’s rule or reign: we celebrate Christ Jesus as ruler of the universe, of all that is and of all that will be. As our under-
standing of the universe expands, we find ourselves caught up in the ever crea ve and saving presence of a compassionate,
merciful God. This feast might serve as a reminder to us to allow the peace of Christ to reign in our hearts even in the face
of derision. May God bless us all.

ACT OF DEDICATION TO JESUS CHRIST THE KING
Most sweet Jesus,
Redeemer of the human race, lookdown upon us humbly pray-ing before You. We are Yours, and Yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with You, behold each one of us freely
consecrates oneself today to Your Most Sacred Heart.
Be King, O Lord not only of the faithful who have never forsak-en You, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned You; grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house,
lest they died of wretchedness and hunger.
Be King, of those who deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of
Truth and the unity of Faith, so that soon there maybe one flock and one Shepherd.
Grant, O Lord to Your Church assurance of freedom from harm; give tranquility to all na ons; make the earth resound from
pole to pole with one cry; Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salva on. Amen
