The couple has said that they don’t know whether the baby will be a boy or a girl. A girl will hold her place in the line of succession, and would be the first to benefit from a change in the law which had always put men ahead of their sisters. Betting ran heavily in favour of the child being a girl, despite the lack of any solid evidence to back that up, and those gamblers turned out to be winners. All the top bets for the baby’s name are for girls. Alice and Charlotte are the clear favourites, followed by Elizabeth, Victoria and Diana — all names with strong connections to royal tradition. The monarchy has not welcomed a princess born this high up the line of succession for many years. Princess Anne, Charles’ sister, was born third in line in 1950. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, were fifth and sixth in line at the time of their birth. Prince William’s wife Kate entered a London

hospital on Saturday 2nd May 2015 and gave

birth to their second child, a girl. The name

of the new princess, born 8lbs 3oz, was not

immediately made public.

The baby girl will be fourth in line to the

throne and the fifth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II. In a brief statement, palace officials said the Duchess of Cambridge was admitted

at 6 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) Saturday 2nd

May to the exclusive Lindo wing at St. Mary’s

Hospital, arriving by car with William.

As news of the child’s birth broke Saturday,

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted

congratulations to the royal couple

The pending birth and uncertainty about the

gender — the royal couple reportedly declined

to learn the sex of the baby beforehand — has

been a boon for Britain’s bookmakers, who

say they have received thousands of bets on

the newborns gender and possible name.

Betting was part suspended after Saturday’s

announcement, though wagers were still being

placed on a name and other characteristics.

“Punters have gone royal baby betting mad

and now that Kate has gone into labour, there

is a huge scramble to predict the royal baby’s

gender, name, weight, and hair colour amongst

other things,” Coral spokeswoman Nicola

McGeady said. “Tens of thousands of bets are

being placed across the nation, sparking one

of the biggest gambles we have ever seen on a

non-sporting event.” Anticipation has been building for days. Kate

had told a well-wisher earlier this year that the child was due in the second two weeks of April,

kicking off what the press called the Great Kate

Wait.

Die-hard royal fans have camped outside the hospital, draped in Union Jack flags and waving festive banners. They have waited patiently on

the sidewalk, hoping for a glimpse of the family.

The Duke and Duchess sent them luxury pastries

and a birthday cake at one point this week — a

mark of gratitude for the fans’ wish to share

their joy.

The world’s media scrambled into place

outside the hospital, waiting for news. The

couple has been anxious to avoid the media

circus that accompanied George’s birth, and

camera crews began setting up only after the

announcement Saturday morning.

Kate will be residing in style. Each en-suite in the private maternity unit has Wifi, satellite television, a radio, a safe, a bedside phone

and a refrigerator. The wing also offers a

“comprehensive wine list should you wish to

enjoy a glass of champagne and toast your

baby’s arrival.”

Kate gets a 10 percent loyalty discount, as she

had her first child there as well. A suite now costs £6,570 for a one-night stay with normal delivery —or £5,913 with Kate’s discount. Doctors’ fees

are extra.

The couple has said that they don’t know

whether the baby will be a boy or a girl. A girl

will hold her place in the line of succession,

and would be the first to benefit from a change in the law which had always put men ahead of

their sisters.

Betting ran heavily in favour of the child being

a girl, despite the lack of any solid evidence to

back that up, and those gamblers turned out to

be winners.

All the top bets for the baby’s name are for

girls. Alice and Charlotte are the clear favourites,

followed by Elizabeth, Victoria and Diana —

all names with strong connections to royal

tradition.

The monarchy has not welcomed a princess born

this high up the line of succession for many

years.

Princess Anne, Charles’ sister, was born third in

line in 1950. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie,

the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah

Ferguson, were fifth and sixth in line at the time of their birth.

Carrickfergus Garden Society Celebrates 60th Anniversary

T he 60th Anniversary of Carrickfergus Garden

society was marked by a celebration dinner at

the Loughshore Hotel on 9th April. The world has

changed a lot since that first meeting of a few keen gardeners in 1955 who wanted to socialise

with other gardeners and share their knowledge

and ideas. Since then various committee members

have maintained the solid foundations laid by

that first committee. The fact that the Society is still going strong, with a membership of over 90,

proves that our founders’ idea was a good one. The

Society they formed has given much pleasure and

friendship to many people over the years.

party’s East Antrim Westminster Candidate

has pledged to continue to work with

communities, schools and parents to enable

more young people to reach their full

potential.

Roy Beggs said, “The numbers of young

people continuing to be referred to the

Educational Welfare Officers for high levels of absenteeism must be of concern to us all.

Absenteeism from school will result in lower

educational achievement and may lead to difficulty in gaining a place in Further and Higher Education or even being accepted onto an apprenticeship.”

The Ulster Unionist Candidate is a

founding member of Horizon SureStart

has been involved in gaining educational funding and support for parents in parts of

Larne and Carrickfergus.

Roy Beggs MLA continued: “The latest

figures indicate in some areas of Larne and Carrickfergus one quarter of post primary

Educational Under Achievementof missing more than 1 day in 7 from

school.

“Increasingly it is being once more

recognised that ‘it takes a village to educate a child’. It takes the school, the

home and the local community valuing education and all working together,

so that every child can reach their full potential. As a public representative I

will continue to support the efforts of

organisations such as SureStart, local

community and voluntary groups, parents and schools so that education is

valued and more of our young people can benefit from education and have greater opportunities in their later life.

“Having highlighted the problem of absenteeism over the past decade, I am

pleased that we are now seeing some

improvement in school attendance. This is particularly apparent in the

primary school figures. I am particular encouraged by the efforts of parents

and the local community to enable

their young people to strive for better educational outcomes. This will pay

dividends in later life.”

Belfast’s public bikeshare scheme, Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes, has been launched. The Belfast City Council scheme, supported by the Department for Regional Development, features 300 bicycles, based at 30 docking stations positioned across the city centre http://www.belfastbikes.co.uk/en/belfast/locations/ Almost 1500 people have registered for the scheme ahead of the launch. Membership costs £20 for an annual subscription or £5 for a 3 day membership for visitors, tourists and casual users. Bikeshare schemes are mainly aimed at facilitating short journeys, so the first 30 minutes of each rental are free of charge and the next

30 minutes will cost just 50p. There are small incremental charges per half hour thereafter. To use the scheme, all users must register a debit or credit card, to which hire charges will then be charged directly. Failure to return a bicycle after 72 hours will result in a direct fine of £120. Hiring one of the Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes is quick and easy and uses smart technology to detect a user’s location and the number of available bikes at docking stations nearby. Members can either swipe their membership card at the on-street terminal to release a bike or they can use the Nextbike app to find the nearest available bicycle,

log it out and return it. Non-members can sign up on-street at one of the 30 terminals, on the website (www.belfastbikes.co.uk ) or by calling the hotline: 03433 571551. Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Arder Carson said: “These bikes are a superb addition to the city’s transport links, a boost to its economy and a further enhancement to our tourism offering. “Thanks to sponsorship by Coca-Cola Zero, we can keep down the price of both the annual membership and the hire charges for this fantastic addition to Belfast. Short journeys can be made so quickly and cheaply – it’s a great way to get across town and to see more of the city. “We have already had a huge amount of interest in the scheme, with lots of enquiries about extending it. We’re hoping it will be a big success and we’ll be able to look at expanding the network in the near future. ” Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: “Cycling offers an enormous range of benefits. It’s healthy, it’s low cost and sustainable, and it’s fun! “I am delighted to support this scheme, both in terms of the funding my department has committed and by adding my own personal support for this forward-thinking initiative. “Cycling, whether for recreation or short distance

commuting can help us develop and maintain an active personal lifestyle and I would encourage everyone living, working, or visiting Belfast to give the Belfast cycle hire scheme a try.” The Belfast Bikes scheme is supported by Coca-Cola Zero, which also sponsors bikeshare schemes in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway. Frank O’Donnell, general manager of Coca-Cola HBC in Ireland and Northern Ireland said: “Our investment in Coca Cola Zero Bikes is part of our wider commitment to help encourage active healthy lifestyles and we hope this scheme will enable more people to integrate cycling into their everyday lives, with the option of a healthier and happier commute. Bikeshare schemes all over Ireland – and in all the major cities of the world – are proving extremely popular and I’m sure the people of Belfast will embrace it too.” The scheme, which is part of Belfast City Council’s Investment Programme 2012-15, will be operated by public sector service specialist, NSL. Docking stations are positioned from the Odyssey Arena to Bradbury Place, from Millfield to Central Station and the Gasworks, linking up with the Lagan towpath and National Cycle Networks. Operating hours for hire are 6am – 12 midnight. Bicycles can be returned to a docking station 24 hours a day.

Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes Go Live

The Belfast public bikeshare scheme - Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes - is launched in Belfast by Lord Mayor Councillor Arder Carson, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy and Frank O’Donnell, general manager of Coca-Cola HBC in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Belfast City Council scheme, supported by the Department for Regional Development, features 300 bicycles, based at 30 docking stations positioned across the city centre.

Rumoured to be realised in July Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and 8 users as long as it is done in the first year. The decision to make Windows 10 a free upgrade comes after users vocally expressed their displeasure with Windows 8 prompting

Windows 7 users to stay put! This would have hindered Microsoft vision for the future – hence the free upgrade. So make sure if you want the free upgrade that you keep an ear out for when and how it will be available or call into Larne Computers for more information.

Last year Brainwaves NI celebrated its 20th Anniversary as a registered charity and are currently supporting over 200 patients and their families throughout Northern Ireland affected by a brain tumour. As a charity we understand the emotional and social isolation, that long term illness brings and our brain tumour patients and their carers can call our dedicated phone line for advice, support and a listening ear. We publish our own information leaflets, we have our own website and we can reach out to patients and families through social media and our mailing list. To prevent social isolation we organise member’s outings to places of interest, weekend breaks and host patient information events. In May we

are taking 123 adults and children and family members touched by a brain tumour to Armagh for a weekend break. This is entirely funded by the charity. We have campaigned locally and nationally to raise awareness on all issues affecting the brain tumour community. We are a volunteer led charity and receive no statutory funding and rely entirely on the friends of the charity for support. Membership of the charity is free and all outings and events are entirely funded by the charity.

Tropic’s founding product - the Body Smooth Refreshing Polish - was handmade in Susan’s kitchen using 100% natural, Australian inspired ingredients and sold for the first time at Greenwich Market, London in 2004. Over the next few years, Susan devotes nights and weekends to manufacturing, selling and formulating new beauty recipes, to create Tropic’s first natural skincare range. After appearing on The Apprentice in 2010, Susan is given the opportunity to present her passion and vision for affordable, natural and cruelty-free skincare to Lord Alan Sugar. Impressed by the new products, he spots a unique business opportunity within a rapidly growing natural beauty industry and invests to become a 50/50 partner; making Tropic the only company he has invested in outside of the Apprentice winners. With a desire to encourage a more entrepreneurial Britain, Susan and Lord Sugar decided that their route to market is to sell their award-winning products exclusively

through independent Tropic Ambassadors and not through shops. Their mission is to ignite the entrepreneurial flair that’s in all of us, and to empower our Ambassadors to earn what they’re worth, on their terms through their lucrative commission plan. On Tropic’s website www.tropicskincare.com, Susan says, “No matter how we’ve grown, we still and always will, uphold the same core values of producing the highest quality, natural and cruelty-free beauty products that really make a difference to your skin.” Today, Tropic Skin Care celebrates over 3,000 Ambassadors and has paid out over £2million in commission. As the fastest growing social selling company in the UK, we look to the future with excitement and a burning passion to create even more beautiful products and to meet many more natural beauty lovers to make next year even bigger and better! “Don’t follow your dreams, chase them!”Susan Ma - founder

My Tropic Story I have worked in direct selling now for over 12 years and have had the privilege

of working with Sir Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver and now Lord Alan Sugar. It all started way back 12 years ago when I friend introduced me to Virgin Cosmetics and I decided to join and give it ago for some extra cash for Christmas. I started with a few parties with friends and family and after a year it turned into my business. I was so busy I give up my full time job and over 9 years with Virgin Cosmetics built a very successful business helping other girls achieve their dreams. As well as getting paid to party, I enjoyed incentives like Holidays around the world, Mulberry Handbags, Dior Watch and was able to treat my family to holidays like Dubai, Las Vegas and Florida. It never felt like work at all.. When Virgin Cosmetics closed I went on to work with Jaime Oliver in his direct selling company for over 2 years and again built a very successfully business. But when I was approached by Tropic, I just had to join this company . Firstly, with Lord Sugar involved and the innovative way Susie has developed these products, there is just nothing like it in the market place. It has been a whirled wind since joining

Tropic and in just under 3 weeks I became a Manager in the company and have built a team of girls who are spreading the Tropic love . I have also helped 1 girl become a Manager with her own team and both my team and I have travelled to Birmingham to attend Tropic events. I have had the privilege of meeting both Lord Sugar and Susan Ma several times. I was asked by Susan to share by success story at one of Tropic events in front of over 650 people, on how I have built the business so quickly in N.Ireland and have became a Senior Team Manager, I felt very honoured to share my story. I am very excited about my future with Tropic and I know with the backing of Lord Sugar and the inspiration of Susan Ma, Tropic is and will continue to be a very successful Direct Selling Company in N. Ireland. If you are looking to built a business or just a part time income then get in touch Corrina Maclean 078876 74716 www.tropicskincare.co.uk/shop/[email protected]

Doreen’s Worth Her Weight In Gold!

weight loss expert in Ballyclare has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 100 people to lose weight at her local group every week. Doreen, who has herself lost over 9.5 stone with Slimming World and runs the Ballyclare Slimming World Thursday Group every week, has been awarded ‘Gold’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and the super service she provides to those members. The accolade is given to Slimming World Consultants who consistently have 100 or more members in their group over several months, and when the service they provide is so good that members come back week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It represents the highest level of service in slimming and places Doreen in the top five per cent of the organisation’s 3,500 Consultants, meaning Ballyclare is home to some of the best slimming support in the UK. It’s the first time Doreen has been awarded the prize since becoming a Consultant in April 2013. Doreen says: “I am delighted to have received the ‘Gold’ award. I absolutely love my job, I’m passionate about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight and seeing them succeed is reward enough, but being given this recognition for the whole group really is the icing

on the cake. This award belongs to the Ballyclare Thursday group’s 120 members. They’re the ones who make our group the success that it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. They make the group a fun, buzzy place to be and I can safely say I always look forward to going to work. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. “The Ballyclare group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Ballyclare. Together, they’ve lost an amazing 150st this year so far. Obesity is at record levels everywhere and with a large percentage of adults in Ballyclare being affected, many people here are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. It’s never been more important that overweight people get the support to make changes to and lead healthier lives – both for themselves and the future generations, their children, too.”

Step Right Up! It’s The Miracle Cure We’ve All Been Waiting ForIt can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. It’s free, easy to take, has an immediate effect and you don’t need a GP to get some. Its name? Exercise.People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant.Health benefits Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age. It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:• up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke• up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes• up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer• up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer• a 30% lower risk of early death• up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis• up to a 68% lower risk of hip fracture

• a 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)• up to a 30% lower risk of depression• up to a 30% lower risk of dementia What counts? To stay healthy, adults should try to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of activities. For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier. For any type of activity to benefit your health, you need to be moving quick enough to raise your heart rate, breathe faster and feel warmer. This level of effort is called moderate intensity activity. One way to tell if you’re working at a moderate intensity is if you can

still talk but you can’t sing the words to a song.If your activity requires you to work even harder, it is called vigorous intensity activity. There is substantial evidence that vigorous activity can bring health benefits over and above that of moderate activity. You can tell when it’s vigorous activity because you’re

breathing hard and fast, and your heart rate has gone up quite a bit. If you’re working at this level, you won’t be able to say more than a few words without pausing for a breath.A modern problemPeople are less active nowadays,

partly because technology has made our lives easier. We drive cars or take public transport. Machines wash our clothes. We entertain ourselves in front of a TV or computer screen. Fewer people are doing manual work, and most of us have jobs that involve little physical effort. Work, house chores, shopping and other necessary activities are far less

demanding than for previous generations. We move around less and burn off less energy than people used to. Research suggests that many adults spend more than seven hours a day sitting down, at work, on transport or in their leisure time. People aged over 65 spend 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary age group.

Sedentary lifestyles Inactivity is described by the Department of Health as a “silent killer”. Evidence is emerging that sedentary behaviour, such as sitting or lying down for long periods, is bad for your health. Not only should you try to raise your activity levels, but you should also reduce the amount of time you and your family spend sitting down. Common examples of sedentary behaviour include watching TV, using a computer, using the car for short journeys and sitting down to read, talk or listen to music – and such behaviour is thought to increase your risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, as well as weight gain and obesity. Crucially, you can hit your weekly activity target but still be at risk of ill health if you spend the rest of the time sitting or lying down. For tips on building physical activity and exercise into your day, whatever your age, read Get active your way.

Telephone : 028 9083 3568

I originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle

accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured

and it came out of its socket. This resulted in my

ankle being surgically pinned. The pain really

started about 15 years ago and it steadily got

worse over time. To the point where it was difficult to work or to go for even a short walk.

The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little

movement which made it hard to walk over rough

ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park

Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle

but it was very impractical and the pain in my

ankle was unbearable when I took it off.

David says “The secret of the rocker is that

unlike most ankle braces it is designed

to facilitate movement not to reduce it. By

mimicking the ankles own movement it

reduces stress on the ankle foot and lower

limb. Our patients often try a sample device

during the examination to allow them to

really get the feeling of walking properly

again.

My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox

Newsletter and I read an article about a new shoe

insert which had been designed and developed

by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic.

I phoned and made an appointment to see

David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the

device. David examined my ankle and said that

the restriction in movement was the cause of

my pain and that I would benefit from the new rocker device. The rocker has to be custom made

so about a week later I had it fitted. With this type of ankle injury you can

be in pain every time you stand up. For

many of our patients just being able to

walk around the local shops can be a

real challenge. For some this can be very

depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be

able to help them walk pain free again.

It has been wonderful to be able to do a full

days work with no severe pain and not having

anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker

Thanks to Learning Breakthrough our Autistic

son has been able to show emotion in ways

we never thought possible. He expresses

love, I am regularly covered in kisses and

he tells me every day “mummy – I love you

so so much”. We always have a good chat at

bedtime and recently when I kissed him and

told him I loved him he said “mummy – you

made my heart grow”. A rather profound

statement for any 5 year old but for a child

who barely spoke a year before it felt like

nothing short of a miracle.

It has been a hard road from when I first started to notice my son wasn’t reaching

his milestones when he was about 2.5. His

speech and understanding of language

weren’t progressing, he was a very strong

willed child, emotionally volatile, preferred his

own company, had poor balance and spatial

awareness, refused most foods and began

to hand flap and twist when excited – all red flags for ASD.As time went on his autistic traits became

more pronounced and I felt like I was losing

my son. He found it difficult to engage in conversation and to make eye contact. He

paid very little attention to his little sister

and wouldn’t let anyone do anything for

him except me. He refused to go anywhere,

his anxiety was taking over all our lives – he

wouldn’t go to the park, to visit family, to soft

play areas or birthday parties ….. all things

a 3 year old should enjoy. Not to mention

the things a 3 year old doesn’t enjoy –

paediatrician appointments, assessments,

occupational therapy, speech therapy …. it

was a nightmare for both of us.

I have always loved and accepted my son for

who he is but what I’ve refused to accept is

that I can’t do anything to help him. I began

researching anything and everything that

could help my beautiful

boy. A friend told me about

an advert she heard on the

radio about the Learning

Breakthrough Program.

I decided to go along to

an information evening

where I listened to Susan describe her journey and

the science behind the

LBP. I left that night full of

hope and certain that I had

found the answer to helping my son.

Susan came to visit us in our home where he would feel comfortable and relaxed – he had

just turned 4. We discussed the exercises that

he would be capable of doing given his age

and I started with a few minutes once a day

building up to ten minutes a day. He wasn’t

able to catch so I started with blowing bubbles

and getting him to pop them whilst balancing

on the board. Gradually he learned to catch

and has become an expert at the pendulum

ball and bouncy balls. We can’t do all of the

exercises yet but he’s only just turned 5.

I can tell you it is hard work and is not for the

faint hearted but neither are the challenges

of raising a child with autism – the daily

battles of teeth brushing, dressing, going to

school, dinnertime …. I thought, what’s one

more thing to add to the day when it could

potentially make all those other struggles

disappear?!

Within weeks of starting

the program he began to

become an adventurous

little boy – my son learned

to ride a bike, something

I thought I might never

see! Rather than cry in the

car outside the park he

asked to go and climbed

everything he could

without fear. He started

school in September and has settled in so well and coped with the

curriculum without difficulty. His teacher told me recently that he’s a very popular member

of the class and he comes home every day

with stories of everything he’s done and who

he’s played with. Going to parties fills him with excitement and I watch him join in with

his friends and it fills me with pride – these are the things that other parents might take

for granted, as I’m sure I would have too had

my precious son not taught me what really

matters in life.

I cannot remember the last time he had a

serious meltdown, he still gets upset and

frustrated but he expresses his feelings now

rather than letting them get the better of

him. He has a lovely relationship with his

sister now and he has become very close

to his dad whereas before he didn’t really

let anyone get too close except me. He was

recently dis-charged from community speech

therapy because his assessment scores had

improved so much, his speech therapist also

commented that she didn’t see the same

anxiety problems and unwillingness to

cooperate.

I couldn’t have done this without Susan’s encouragement and support. Her office sign reads ‘Unlock your potential’ and that is

exactly what has happened to our child – he

is no longer ‘locked in’. She truly wants the very best for every family that she works with.

I am so grateful that Susan and the LBP came into our lives. Previously the future filled me with overwhelming fear, I still worry – as every

mother does, but not to the extent that I used

to. I’m happy knowing I’m doing my best for

my son and I’m watching him grow into a

wonderful little man.

We’re one year on and I’m aware that we still

have a long road ahead as he still has some

problems but I watch my son now enjoying

his life – laughing, singing and dancing and I

think to myself that anything’s possible …..

Entries for Six Mile Water Grasstrack Now AvailableCarrickfergus & District Motorcycle Club’s brand new grasstrack circuit, Six Mile Water in Ballyclare will stage its first open event on Saturday 9th May. The joint adult and youth venture will officially kick off the clubs grasstrack season and its goal is to showcase this exhilarating sport at all levels.Carrickfergus & District have been running popular grasstracks since reforming as a club back in 2007 and this new venue has the potential to be one of the best yet from both a riders and spectators perspective. Contours of the land will be used to create a testing and exciting layout around the large field situated on the upper side of the locally well-known, Six Mile Water River.Adult races that will feature throughout the day include Premier Solo & Quad Classes along with Clubman versions of the same. The trend form of racing within Northern Ireland presently is very much EVO Racing so to cater for this an EVO class has been added to the format. As an extra addition to the Saturday event, the sidecar men and women are making a return to race for the Robert Blair Memorial Trophy after a year’s absence from the club schedule. If that wasn’t enough of an action packed day the 2015 Youth Grasstrack Series will begin right alongside the adult racing providing an excellent stage for the youth to race on.

A full range of solo youth classes from 50cc automatics right up to the seniors are catered for and a reduced entry fee applies for round one due to the gate admission fee applicable to everyone attending that is over 16.Pre entry for all classes is preferred to ensure the club can produce an up to date race day programme for spectators & sponsors but entries will be taken on the day also when space remains in the class. To guarantee a place on the grid competitors can go to

www.carrickfergusmcc.co.uk to enter the event online but should be reminded that this online system will close on Wednesday 6th May as the programme goes to print.Everything is in place for a great days racing, make sure you are there to enjoy it. For latest updates and more information including directions to the track, check out the Carrickfergus & District M.C.C. club website and social media channels.

Want To Impress Friends With Expensive Wine?Do you want to impress guests with a bottle of

vintage wine, but can’t afford the hefty price tag?

Just buy a cheap one and tell them it’s expensive,

and they’ll enjoy it more.

It sounds far-fetched, but a study in the Journal of

Marketing research has shown that preconceptions

of price can actually change the chemistry of the

brain so that drinkers enjoy plonk in the same way

they would a more expensive bottle.

In an experiment that involved test subjects

having their brains scanned while drinking what

they were told were five different wines of different prices, researchers found that the drinkers’ brains

showed they enjoyed the most expensive wines

more.

In reality, the subjects were just drinking three

different wines, which cost two different prices

- they just enjoyed the wine more when they

thought it was from an expensive, ‘nice’ bottle.

The study shows just how strong marketing

placebo effects (MPEs) can be when used on

consumers - our brains can actually experience

very different products in similar ways, depending

on how they are marketed.

The authors of the study, Hilke Plassman, a

cognitive neuroscientist, and Bernd Weber,

Professor of Neuroscience at the University of

Bonn, found that reward-seeking people with low

awareness of their physical senses and a high need

for cognition were more likely to be influenced by

MPEs.

The study to adds the case against the wine-

tasting industry. Numerous tests into the

capabilities of wine tasters and drinkers have been

conducted over the years, many of which show that

experts are often swayed by their preconceptions

of what the wine will be like.

In 2001, French academic Frédéric Brochet

presented 57 volunteers with two glasses of wine -

one red, one white.

The test subjects overwhelmingly described the

red as tasting of typical red wine flavours, like prune, chocolate and redcurrant, and the white

as having notes of grapefruit, may blossom and

honey.

They didn’t know, however, that the two wines

were exactly the same - they were both the same

white wine, but one had been coloured red with a

flavourless dye. Winemaker Robert Hodgson has also called

into question the abilities of wine connoisseurs

- finding that professional judges responsible for awarding medals in wine competitions seemingly

awarded points randomly - often giving the exact

same wines wildly different scores on different

occasions.

So next time you’re tempted by an expensive

bottle in the supermarket, just get a cheap one and

change the label. Even the pros won’t notice

Tips for maintaining your

garden now that

spring is in full swing:

1. Late spring is a good time to prune

or deadhead some of the early shrubs

once they have finished flowering. When pruning, make sure to thin out the older

wood to improve the form and vigour of

your plants. 2. Weed your beds — now is

when the seed-

lings of invasive

or weedy plants

are just getting

established. This will make

summer care

of your beds

a little easier

as fewer of the weed seedlings will get

established.3. Once all of your garden plants have

begun growth, divide those that may be

a bit overgrown or aggressive. Pot up the extra plants and give to family and friends

or host a sidewalk sale and donate the

proceeds to the Nature Conservancy of

Canada.4. Consider adding hummingbird and

butterfly feeders to attract these colourful species to your garden.5. Ensure that water features (birdbaths,

etc.) are kept clean and emptied every few days to eliminate breeding sites for

mosquitoes.

6. Set up a deep watering schedule

to promote good root development. A well-developed root system will help

plants weather dry spells in the summer. It is best to water early in the morning. Once the warm weather arrives, a deep soaking

once a week of at least two to three centi-

metres of water is optimal.7. This is a good time to ensure you have

a good cover of

mulch on gar-

den beds to con-

serve moisture,

reduce weeds

and keep the

soil layer cooler

in the heat of

summer.8. Trim branch-

es and shape

shade trees

to allow them to heal over the coming

growing season.9. Keep a log (with photographs) of the birds and insects in your garden. Insects, birds and bats can be great natural pest

controllers. Determine which are benefi-

cial for control of problematic pests and

research ways to maintain them in your

garden.10. Many local horticultural societies

and gardening groups advertise tours of

private gardens over the course of the

summer. Consider signing up with one of them.

fantastic year with their BB Camp to Crawfordsburn Scout Centre. During this year there have been

many highlights from Anchor Boys games night

competition, to having a gutter 8 metres long filled with ice cream aka Ice Cream Gutter Sundae, to raising money for Malawi, to getting to the Irish Finals for the Masterteam Quiz Competition. There has been a lot to celebrate and this was

marked at the annual Parents’ Night in March, all 3 sections joined together to celebrate this fantastic

year. Well done to Joshua Boyd, Chris Hogg, Aaron Kirkpatrick and Andrew Beattie for being awarded their Presidents’ Badges, they also were

the makeup of our Masterteam who made it to the Irish Finals.

The year concluded with the annual BB Camp to Crawfordsburn. The weather was sunny from start

to finish which makes what already was a fantastic weekend away and even more fantastic weekend.

Ards FC 1-1 Ballyclare ComradesSaturday 25th April 2015 – Belfast

Telegraph NIFL Championship 1 Andrew Doyle’s second half equaliser earned Ballyclare Comrades an unexpected point against promotion chasing Ards. Spectators at Bangor Fuels Arena enjoyed an entertaining Championship 1 fixture played on the pristine 3G surface, in brilliant spring sunshine, even though it turned out to be a dead rubber. Going in to this game Ards needed to win to be in the play-off position, provided that Bangor lost, but when the news filtered through that the Seasiders had taken an early lead, the incentive for a home win disappeared. David Dorrian made four changes with Chris Getty, Ben Browne, Peter Duffin and Randal Reid given starting roles in a 3-5-2 formation, while David McCullough from the Reserves made his debut on the bench. After a dull opening quarter the game sparked in to life in the

22nd minute when Chris Trussell out-manoeuvred former team-mate Denver Gage, but keeper Shanaghan saved at the expense of a corner. The Reds continued to impress, and Gary Brown fired over from a Duffin cross, while Trussell just failed to get a touch from a Brown pass with Shanaghan left exposed. Trussell once again got the better of Gage on the by-line, and his cross found Randal Reid, but his volley was blocked by a defender. However Ards finished the first half on top and the Reds goal had a lucky escape in the 39th minute. Paddy Flood did well to get down

to parry O’Neill’s drive, but the ball fell nicely for McMillan, but the Ards Man of the Match, fired in to the side netting with Flood still on the ground. Moments later the hosts were in front when Warwick’s diagonal pass found O’Neill unmarked,

and he drilled the ball in to the net to give Ards a rather fortunate lead at the break. Comrades resumed with Joel Cooper replacing Kyle Buckley, and this

almost paid off immediately when Trussell dribbled past a couple of defenders before setting up Reid, but his shot flashed wide with only the keeper to beat. With Getty dominant at the heart of the defence, Flood was rarely tested, while at the opposite end Trussell continued to pose problems, and the pressure paid off in the 70th minute when Doyle’s free from twenty yards rocketed in to the bottom corner, despite Shanaghan getting a hand to it. Ards finished strongly with McMillan and Cockcroft failing to test Flood when well placed, but at the death Trussell almost nicked the three points when only a smart save with his feet by Shanaghan preserved parity. Commenting manager Dorrian said, “I thought that we were hungrier than they were, and I was disappointed that we didn’t get all three points.”

Carrick seal promotion to the top flight with a nervy 1-0 win over Dundela. Carrick Rangers were never going to seal the Championship 1 title the easy way.Aaron Harmon’s early strike secured a 1-0 win over Dundela but, boy, was it tense. It was refreshing to see a lengthy queue of amber and black outside Taylor’s Avenue before kick-off.But if the bumper home crowd were expecting the already-relegated Duns to roll over, they were mistaken. From the first whistle, it was clear that Carrick were facing a side hell-bent on spoiling the promotion party. The opening exchanges were fast and frantic, nervy and nail-biting. In the 11th minute, the biggest roar of the season was heard. Ben Roy reached the by-line on the left and pulled the ball back for Harmon to clinically hammer home, the captain leading by shining example. Visiting goalkeeper Jonathon Sergeant raced off his line to prevent Kyle Cherry latching onto a high ball minutes later. 20 minutes in, Conor McCloskey picked up possession thirty yards out and jinked past a number of challenges before seeing his dipping effort sail narrowly past the post.At the other end, Bam Neeson held a tame shot from Scott Collins. Chances were scarce as the youthful centre back pairing of Ryan Arthur and Daniel Kelly, with the injured Ciaran Donaghy looking on, oozed class and confidence. McCloskey was a continuous threat but his afternoon looked set to end prematurely as he rolled over on his ankle. But there is something different about this group of players. There is something that makes them laugh in the face of being 21 points behind the league leaders and playing twice a week for two months. That attitude was typified in McCloskey, who was

determined not to be beaten by the pain barrier – and he wasn’t. Miguel Chines’ left-footed free kick curled just over the crossbar, as Carrick looked to bring a two-goal lead into the interval. In the 35th minute, the frontman flashed a header wide from Roy’s inviting delivery.Dundela striker Mark McClelland, who hails from Carrick, was then denied by a sliding block from Arthur in the six yard box. As news filtered through that Bangor were cruising to a comfortable win over Distillery, it was clear that only a win would do. Early in the second half, Aaron Smyth positioned himself well to stop an incisive pass from reaching the feet of Kyle Dillon. The experienced Aidan Watson was a calming presence at the base of the Rangers midfield and Chines cut inside but fired well over from 20 yards. In the 70th minute, Aaron Traynor fired in a low cross and Chines was prevented from tapping in by great, albeit desperate, defensive work. As Roy sliced an ambitious attempt wide, there was a sense that goal number two was not going to arrive. But it nearly did. At the wrong end. Smyth headed a high ball back towards Neeson and, as there was a collective gasp of horror, the goalkeeper leapt like a salmon and prevented a cruel own goal. Traynor’s overhit cross almost looped over Sergeant but he was alert to tip the ball over the bar. The final whistle signalled the end of the mental boxing bout and the confirmed return of Carrick Rangers to the promised lands of the Premiership. And how fitting that the match was sponsored by Patricia Johnston, whose husband Charlie sadly passed away earlier in the season. He may not have been there in person but his spirit was in attendance as the twelfth man, kicking every ball, enduring every nervous moment. As first team coach Gary Haveron collected his medal, he wore a shirt with ‘Charlie 12’ printed on the back. Each

player walking to the trophy presentation in the centre circle was met by the vocal Amber Army chanting their name. Captain Aaron Harmon lifted the trophy to the bright skies to mark the second piece of silverware in this magnificent season. The domestic treble will be clinched on Friday, if the Gers can muster one more heroic performance in the Intermediate Cup final against Harland and Wolff Welders. Chairman Davy Hilditch said: “Well obviously we’re delighted with the result. Perhaps we struggled a bit to put it to bed and it went right up to the last minute. The last few weeks have been the telltale signs as they went through that period of Saturday-Tuesday and we were, at one stage, 21 points behind. They’ve come through that period and what an achievement.” Premiership football has the potential to benefit the town immensely and Hilditch reflected, “It’s massive. Hopefully people are swinging behind the club now at this stage and hopefully we can get the paperwork sorted out and have our matches here for August. The club has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, in our youth section, the mini soccer and all the way through. Even Ladies and Girls soccer has started now. The club just keeps expanding into the community here in Carrick; this is a massive boost for us.” Aaron Harmon, who captained his side to glory, said, “It was unreal. To get the winning goal was just fantastic. We didn’t turn up the way we wanted but I don’t really care to be honest, as long as I got my hands on the trophy in the end. Dundela were already relegated with nothing to play for so they’re just coming out and playing with a freedom. All the pressure was on us to go and do the job. We were a wee bit nervous but we got the job done and that’s the main thing. We’ll enjoy a few beers tonight and we’ll focus again next week and try to get the Intermediate Cup as well.”

Dear Chatterbox reader, it has been an amazing period at Taylor’s Avenue.

I Feel that the club is better prepared for the top flight now of Irish League football. At that stage (Last Promotion) I felt we were, in hindsight with a bit of experience, not prepared to go up. Now five years later, I think we’ve got a lot more experience in the boardroom, a lot more experience in what we need to do. We’re better prepared, we’re better equipped to go up this time and we’re back at Taylor’s Avenue. “All in all, it is a great achievement and a wonderful season so far. It couldn’t have gone any better for us and we have one more game to go to get a historic treble for the club and everybody involved.” In terms of strengthening the squad for next season, Hughes said, “Well that is something that would need to be answered by Glenn (Taggart), Gary (Haveron) and Millsy (Steven Mills) and that’s up to them and what they feel we need to bring in to keep us up. It’s a big ask and sometimes unfortunately it just comes down to the money. But we have a lot of good young players coming though and we’re in decent shape. We’ll see where we get to.” *Report before Intermediate Cup Win

Historic Treble as Carrick Win Intermediate Cup To Claim Treble

by MICHAELH U G H E S

Carrick Rangers defeated HW Welders 3-1 at Seaview to win the Intermediate Cup and complete a domestic treble. The East Antrim side had already lifted the Steel & Sons Cup earlier in the season and then, last week, Belfast Telegraph Championship 1. Rangers enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges albeit with little end product in front of goal. The Welders began to find their feet more after the opening quarter-of-an-hour with David Rainey failing to find the target with a header while a later effort was blocked. And the former Crusaders man was out of luck once more a short time later after getting on the end of a Michael McLellan pass only to fire over. Carrick came closest to breaking the deadlock just after the half-hour mark when Conor McClos-

key crossed for Adam Dick to unfortunately head against the crossbar. Welders ‘keeper Michael Dougherty was called into action early in the second half to deal with a great strike from Ben Roy as Miguel Chines closed in. At the other end a Scott Davidson cross almost deceived Carrick ‘keeper Brian Neeson but he managed to hold onto the ball. Chines almost opened the scoring for Carrick after that with a great opportunity but Dougherty proved equal to the challenge. But Chines did go one better on the hour after he latched onto a long ball from Dick to beat the Welders ‘keeper at the near post. The Welders levelled four minutes later through McLellan after Paul Dickson supplied the telling ball for the former Ballymena United and Portad-

own man to turn the ball beyond Neeson in off an upright. However, the Welders’ joy was short lived follow-ing Mark Magennis’ dismissal not long after an incident with Aaron Traynor. With no further goals during the 90 minutes extra-time was required - and Carrick made their numerical advantage count after barely a minute with a thunderous McCloskey strike from an outstanding delivery by Roy. Then, on 99 minutes, McCloskey found the net again - this time with a lob over Dougherty - to put the outcome beyond doubt and complete a memo-rable season for the men from Taylor’s Avenue.
