A new Local Area Planning Office opened on 19 January 2015 which will see Lisburn people having planners on their doorstep for the first time. At present DOE Planning for the Lisburn
and Castlereagh areas operates from Rathkeltair House, Downpatrick and Bedford House, Belfast. Experienced Planners from DOE Area Planning
Team will now relocate to Lagan Valley Island, the headquarters building for Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council. From there they will work alongside future council colleagues while ensuring a normal
planning service is maintained for the area covered by the new council. This marks another important step in the preparation for the transfer of planning
to councils on 1 April 2015.

RECORD TONNAGES BULKED UP AT BELFAST HARBOUR
Overall tonnages rose by 1.6%, driven by strong growth in bulk cargo
which accounts for over 40% of throughput at the Harbour. Trade sectors
which grew particularly well included stone exports (18%), industrial
and domestic coal (20%), paper products (33%) and steel (38%). A record
476,000 freight vehicles also passed through the Harbour during 2014
(up over 2%), while container traffic improved by 2.9% to 125,000 units.
The level of new car imports also rose by 10% to 48,000, its highest level
since 2007. The Harbours animal feed sector performed well, rising
3.3% to a record 2.2 million tonnes, while scrap exports rose 14% to a
record 373,000 tonnes. Cement tonnages also improved, increasing
fivefold to 79,000 tonnes. This was, however, from a small base and total
cement tonnages remain less than one third of pre-recession levels. Ferry
passenger numbers remained steady during 2014 at 1.4m while cruise
passengers calling at Belfast increased by 23% to a record 112,000.
Trade figures released by Belfast Harbour show that it handled a record 23 million tonnes during 2014, up 46% since the
recessions low point in 2009.

The ArtsoCREATIVE EXCHANGE :
EAST BELFAST ARTISTS BRIGHTEN UP THE CITY & BEYOND As we hibernate under the grey skies of winter, four acclaimed East Belfast artists are working hard to add a touch of colour to our lives by creating and exhibiting artworks locally, nationally and internationally.
Creative Exchange is an East Belfast charitable visual art collective that provides studios for 14 artists at their home in the Portview Trade Centre on the
Newtownards Road. Once a year the collective get
together to deliver the dynamic Art in the Eastside
Billboard project that dominates the streets of East
Belfast and has attracted international attention.
It is a colourful array of work from artists in the
collective alongside other talent from all over the
world. When they are not working on Art in the
Eastside, they are beavering away in their studios
creating work to exhibit in local, national and
international galleries.
If youre in Belfast city centre in February 2015,
pop in and see the work of artists Lesley Cherry
and George Robb with exhibitions running
throughout the entire month in the Golden
Thread and Belfast Exposed galleries. Last year
Lesley Cherry won a prestigious ACES Award
(Artists Career Enhancement Scheme) from the
Arts Council Northern Ireland. This allowed her to
undergo a mentorship programme and funded the
creation of pieces for her forthcoming solo show
Repeat Patterns taking place at the Golden Thread.
She will display artworks with wallpaper and text,
which record and hide, hand-written stories. Lesley
also uses childrens toys and educational tools, to
create thought provoking phrases and comment.
This recent work will also be represented at the
SCOPE Art Fair, New York in March.
George Robb will be exhibiting photographs in
Belfast Exposed photographic gallery in a group
exhibition Documenting Change. This work
examines and documents alternative perspectives
of culture and places. He has a strong relationship
with landscapes and through his work shares the
journey of changing values. For this exhibition he
be showing work from the Township series which
is based on a small township near Cape Town in
South Africa that George has photographed for
the past ten years. George will continue building
this body of work for a future solo exhibition as he
prepares for another trip to Cape Town.
In addition, you do not have to go far to see
the work of another two Creative Exchange
artists, Stephen Millar and Paul Moore, who
collaborated on the production of a short film
titled Rat. It engaged the public to explore positive
relationships to sound and has been selected to
be presented in the R-Space gallery Visioning
weekender on 6th & 7th of February 2015. The
trailer for the film can be viewed now on vimeo

Health Adviceo
Ive always had problems with my
right ankle, regularly spraining it
which would leave my foot painful,
stiff, and swollen. I eventually became unable to
rotate my right ankle without pain. Id had a few
bad sprains during my childhood and in each case
it took at least a week to be able to put my foot to
the ground.10 years ago after some more injuries I
went to a physiotherapist (again). He felt my ankle
wasnt responding to treatment and suggested I
see an orthopaedic consultant who took MRI scans
which showed that I had probably been born with
some of my ankle bones fused together, restricting
my ankle movement. He felt that it was not serious
enough to warrant surgery. Wearingvery sensible
lace up shoes, and always having an ankle strap in
my bag became a way of life.My friend Issy told me
about an insole with a rocker which she had been
given. It had made a huge difference to her mobility.
The rocker insole was designed by David Hallowell
at the Northern Ireland Foot & Ankle Clinic. I had
a consultation with David and he explained how
the new rocker works, let me try a sample and then
took casts of my feet. David says -Our patients like
the reassurance of knowing their devices are custom
designed and manufactured in our laboratory (What
we call the Rolls Royce approach). This means your
support or rocker is an exact fit maximising its function
and comfort. Our unique approach of having the clinic
and the manufacture laboratory in one location means
any modifications can be carried out while youre with
us and insures youll have an orthotic support with a
proven track record that you can trust. I collected my
rocker insole a few days later. I suddenly realised
that I was going down the stairs with much greater
mobility than usual; and the downward movement
of my right ankle was much easier than normal. I also
found I walkingwas much easier. I was in Glasgow
for the Commonwealth Games and needed to walk
good distances. If I had done this before I had the
insoles, my feet would have been sore, my ankle
swollen and locked so my walking would have been
badly effected and painful. I would have spent the
evening with my feet up so I could manage the next
days activities. But recovery time wasnt needed,
thanks to the insole creating the rocking motion for
my ankle. No swelling, no pain, no locking of the
ankle, no need for recovery time! This bony restriction
is always painful and can become a misery. The goal
of the rocker is to reduce your pain by improving
movement and function. This means increased mobility
with all the life changing benefits that go along with
being able to walk pain free. The insoles fit into
several pairs of shoes and boots, not just my trainers. I
would definitely recommend anyone else with similar
ankle problems as mine make an appointment with
David. Since I designed the rocker in 2010 the number
of patients attending our clinic from all over the UK
who have successfully used it has been way beyond our
expectations. Its extremely gratifying to see someone
who has been crippled with foot or ankle pain, walk
comfortably again. Testimonials on our website show
this device is changing the lives of our patients

it is higher than 140/90mmHg on a

pressure often has no symptoms, but
if left untreated, the risk of heart attack

You can take measures to reduce your

Stop smoking. Eat a healthy balanced

FEBRUARY 2015 11HOLYWOOD ADVERTISERwww.holywoodadvertiser.com
AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across NorthDown, including Holywood, has cost theHousing Executive almost 90,000 in thepast two years alone, it has emerged thisweek. The housing body has had to spend the
five figure sum on removing graffiti fromits property in the various estates it isresponsible for across the borough. While much of the graffiti can be put
down to common vandalism, some of it hasalso contained sinister threats againstnamed individuals and to express supportfor or opposition to various paramilitarygroups.Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA has
expressed his shock at the mounting costof the graffiti, which emerged in responseto a question he put to Department ofSocial Development Minister, MervynStorey, at Stormont. It was revealed that during the financial
year 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent43,267.15 on graffiti removal around theborough and during the year 2013 to 2014this rose to 45,080.23.Mr Easton said he was deeply shocked
to discover that the Executive had spentover 88,000 on removing graffiti from itsproperties across North Down over the lasttwo financial years. He added, At a time when departments
are struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needsto be doing is having to waste moneyremoving graffiti put there by sillyindividuals who are costing the ratepayersof North Down a lot of money.
This is money that could be spent in abetter way, such as providing homes orindeed doing essential repairs toinfrastructure. Those responsible for graffiti need to
wise up and stop this as they are hurtingthe ratepayers of North Down. I believe the only way to reduce
incidents of graffiti is to impose tougherfines and community service on thosecaught and make them remove theirhandiwork.Mr Eastons Assembly question asked
the Minister for Social Development todetail the cost of removing graffiti fromHousing Executive properties in NorthDown in each of the last two financialyears. The minister replied that the Housing
Executive had advised him that the cost ofremoving graffiti from their properties inNorth Down was as follows - 2012/13,43,267.15 and 2013/14, 45,080.23.In May intimidating loyalist graffiti was
daubed on a gable wall in BangorsClanmorris estate just days after a man wasviolently assaulted by a masked gangwielding hammers in the Abbey Park area. The terrifying threat included the words,
Next time its a bullet, and was claimed tohave been made by a group calledLoyalists Against Drugs whose name wasalso daubed alongside the grim warning. The graffiti appeared after a man was
attacked by a gang of masked men as hewalked along a nearby road and had to betaken to hospital to be treated for hisinjuries.

When it comes to your eyes, research has found some foods can make a particular difference in
protecting the eyes and keeping them
healthy. Your mother was looking after
your eyes when she told you to Eat
up your vegetables!. Opticians agree
it is definitely good advice to eat more
fruit and vegetables. The superfoods
award goes to the dark leafy green
vegetables such as kale and spinach.
These contain carotenoids (lutein
and zeaxanthin) and it is thought that
these help to protect your macula
(the central area of your retina) from
damaging blue light. It is a fact that
carrots are indeed good for your eyes
and are well worth including. They can
help you see better in the dark but for
this to be noticeable you would need
to eat so many of them it is likely your
skin will turn orange! A wide range of
foods is important and that is why it is
suggested that you eat a rainbow of
fruit and vegetables in your 5, 7 or 10 a
day. Here are a few suggestions:
RED TOMATOES, STRAWBERRIES
ORANGE ORANGE PEPPERS, SWEET
POTATO
YELLOW SWEETCORN, GRAPEFRUIT
GREEN SPINACH, BROCCOLI
BLUE BLUEBERRIES
PURPLE BLACKBERRIES, GRAPES
Nuts and seeds are valuable sources
of a variety of vitamins and minerals,
especially Vitamin E, copper and zinc
which are important for the eyes.
While you are enjoying your kale stir
fry or rainbow fruit kebabs, maybe
your waistline will benefit too,
although possibly not if you always eat
your blueberries in a muffin!
Perhaps you think eating mountains
of fruit and vegetables is too big a
challenge. It can be difficult to reach
the recommended healthy levels from
diet alone, especially for those at risk of
macular degeneration. Supplements
are available in capsule form or even as
a small bar of chocolate combining the
best balance of vitamins and minerals
to support good eye health. Ask your
local optician for advice on which one
would be best for you.

Weighing in at more than 11,000 tons, the Byford Dolphin could create
up to 1,000 contracted jobs at Harland & Wolff for workers with the
appropriate skills. The multi-million pound contract is also expected
to have a trickle-down effect, with the hospitality industry benefiting
from an influx of workers from outside Northern Ireland. The mas-
sive, floating structure arriving in the city is the sister of the Blackford
Dolphin - a rig which spent six months being refurbished at the ship-
yard last year. The 355ft Byford Dolphin was originally built in 1974
and is owned by Aberdeen-based Dolphin Drilling. It can drill down to
around 6,000 metres and can operate in water as deep as 460 metres.
Its owner is one of the longest-established companies of its kind. The
rigs arrival in the shipyard had been delayed for several days due to
adverse weather. It was eventually guided along Belfast Lough by tug
boats after waiting at the mouth of the lough. The same rig previously
visited Belfast for repair work back in 2004.

Childcare Optionso
CHOOSING A CHILDMINDERFOR MANY PARENTS, SELECTING THE RIGHT CHILDCARE FOR THEIR CHILD IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST DECISIONS THEYLL EVER MAKE. NICMA THE CHILDMINDING ASSOCIATION OFFER A SUPPORT AND ADVICE SERVICE HELPING TO MATCH PARENTS WITH CHILDMINDERS WHO HAVE SUITABLE VACANCIES.
The first step is to decide what type of childcare would best suit your child and your needs. Childminding suits parents who want a high quality, affordable and flexible
childcare option, and who value a childcarer
who can give their child individual attention
in a home from home setting. If you opt for a
childminder, make sure he or she is registered
with their local Health and Social Care Trust. In
order to comply with the recently introduced
Minimum Standards for the early years sector all
newly registered childminders are now required
to have training in Health & Safety, Safeguarding
Children and Paediatric First Aid prior to
completion of registration. Existing registered
childminders will also be required to complete
this training. Unregistered childminders dont
have insurance, havent been vetted or inspected
and are unlikely to have completed the required
training. NICMA has a dedicated telephone
helpline and website search facility. These will
help you to find a registered childminder almost
anywhere in NI. Once youve narrowed down
your search, it is worth taking time to visit a
number of childminders and research. NICMAs
Choosing a Childminder booklet offers a
comprehensive guide to what you can expect
from your childminder although you should bear
in mind that, as self-employed childcare providers,
what each individual childminder offers may vary
slightly. You can be assured that any childminder
who offers good quality care will quite understand
why you want to ask questions and ensure that
you make the right, considered choice.
NICMAsTOPTIPS
NICMA WOULD RECOMMEND THESE TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOUR FINAL CHOICE:
Arrange a visit when some of the children the childminder looks after are there. Do the children seem happy and at ease?
FOR MORE INFO ON FINDING AND CHOOSING A CHILDMINDER, JUST CALL NICMA ON 028 9181 1015 OR VISIT THE WEBSITE. ALTERNATIVELY YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR LOCAL CHILDMINDING DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, LIZ BROWN, ON:0751 747 2271 [email protected].
1VISITDo your research
Make sure the childminder has adequate insurance cover ask to see his or her insurance certificates.
2CHECKLook over documentation
Check what food is going to be provided and also whether any of the snacks are healthy options.
3FOODHealthy options?
Find out about the daily routine followed by the childminder, the activities he/she provides, and any outings or trips.
4ROUTINEPlans for the days
Once youve selected your childminder, ensure you sign a contract with him or her it provides a vital safeguard for you both.

The History ManoA LITTLE HISTORY
IS A GOODTHING...
As I was walking along Knock Road one day, near the Comber Greenway, I noticed that the builders had demolished a derelict large house called The Orchard. It was on an expansive site, surrounded by large trees (which have also gone) just next to Knockcastle Park and they are now building several new houses on the site.
The original house was built around the time of the First World War and the first occupant was James A Duff M.P. There is a very interesting interview with
a young Margaret Molyneaux in my Knock
local history book about Mrs Duff. Margarets
family were neighbours of the Duffs on Knock
Road in the 1920s and lived in a house called
Dundela, previously on a site at the entrance to
Knockcastle Park.
Just across Knock Road, on the corner of
Kensington Road stood another large house
called Beaconsfield which in the 1920s was the
home of the Gordon family. The householder
James Gordon was Permanent Secretary at the
Ministry of Agriculture in the newly established
Northern Ireland government. Beaconsfield was
one of the older houses on Knock Road, built
for an insurance agent called Joseph Millar in
around 1869. There were many large villas built
in the Knock area after the 1850s. Following
The Great Famine of 1847 the population of
Belfast increased dramatically as people came
to the city looking for work and many wealthy
business owners moved out of town and built
new villas on the hills surrounding Belfast where
the air was cleaner and their gardens were
much more spacious.
Access, and transport, to Belfast was also
improved when the Belfast & County Down
Railway was completed and passed through
Knock in 1850. The horse tramway was
extended to Knock Depot, opposite S.D. Bells, in
the early 1900s. The roads were not so good in
those days. Originally Knock Station was known
as Ballycloghan Halt. Ballycloghan being the
local townland name for the area.
By 1893 Beaconsfield was the Home of the
Hurley family and they stayed until around
1909. Fred Hurley was a wealthy tea merchant
with premises in Waring Street, Belfast. He
was born in Dublin and had come to Belfast
in the 1860s. The family were members of
the congregation at the newly built (1896) St
Columbas Church of Ireland on Kings Road.
The ownership of the grand house changed
on several occasions during the 20th century
and in 1935 it became the home of Miss
Alice Maud Crawford (apparently one of the
Crawfords of Crawfordsburn) and she lived
there until her death in 1960 at the age of 94
years. Beaconsfield then lay derelict for a period
until a 1961 newspaper article reported that
the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation (now
Marie Curie Cancer Care) had bought the site
and planned to demolish the house with a view
to erecting a nursing home for cancer patients
on the site. In June 1965 the Belfast Telegraph
announced that the Marie Curie Foundation
will this month open its first home in Belfast.
The new facility was called Beaconfield Nursing
Home (somewhere along the line the S was
dropped from the name) and is now known as
Marie Curie Hospice which will celebrate its
50th anniversary in June 2015.
