Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, As we approach the end of Week 6 it is now important that we recognise that the ‘business end’ of the term is upon us. Year 11 and 12 students begin exams in two weeks with the other years starting in three weeks. It is imperative that all students are doing regular revision and study. As well, the assignment workload is beginning to peak so it is also important that the students manage this appropriately. It is around this time of the term that we see the ‘stress levels’ start to rise so careful management, encouragement and support is critical. However, there is no substitute for hard work, so this along with support and encouragement will ensure a successful term. Last week I had the opportunity to participate in the Year 12 Kairos Retreat. This was an outstanding experience for staff and students. All who attended both retreats had the opportunity to share their stories, reflect and examine their journey (past, present and future). My thanks to the large number of staff who attended the retreats. The first of the school socials was held last Saturday night. I thank the staff and parents who assisted and congratulate the students on their behaviour. The AIC and CIC sporting programs are well underway so I remind students about their commitment to the activities for the Term. Whilst pre-season trainings have begun in a number of sports, the commitment to ‘IN SEASON’ sports remains a priority. Please ensure this approach is followed. This Sunday nearly 40 of the College Captain’s from the last 60 years are returning to St Patrick’s College along with a number of the past Principals. I am very much looking forward to the afternoon and the opportunity to showcase the College to these people. This ‘College Captain's Reception’ is part of our 60 Year celebrations. Next week the CIC and AIC swimming carnivals will be held. I wish all swimmers and their coaches the very best. They have worked hard and I am confident that they will represent St Patrick’s College with distinction. Good luck to all swimmers. Finally this week, you may be aware that a Government review of funding to schools has been occurring and the GONSKI REPORT was handed down last week. There is still much detail to be developed before we can access the potential impact for St Patrick’s College. If you are interested in finding out more about this issue I have included two web address that may assist Catholic Education www.qcec.qld.catholic.edu.au and Edmund Rice Education www.erea.edu.au Have a great week. COLLEGE DEAN

DAVID GARDINER

“Certa Bonum Certamen” is the College motto. It is Latin for “Fight the Good Fight”. The motto was selected by the first Headmaster, Brother Coffey. It is also appropriate for the spirit and tradition of the Confraternity Shield Carnival. St Patrick’s is excited to be able to host the Confraternity carnival as part of our 60th Anniversary celebra-tions. The Confraternity Carnival is an annual schoolboys’ rugby league competition conducted by the Queensland Inde-pendent Secondary Schools’ Rugby League (Q.I.S.S.R.L). The Carnival has been in existence since 1980 and in that time has developed a reputation as one of the most formidable schoolboy rugby league competitions in Australia. The Carnival is played each year in a different city in Queensland and the competition is for the Open or Firsts team from each school. Teams will bring a squad of 20 players to the Carnival.

With just six teams in 1980, the Carnival now boasts 40 teams, playing in five divisions; Confraternity Shield, Bob Lindner Trophy, Confraternity Plate, Bowl and Cup. The name, Confraternity, is a reflection of the Carnival’s largely Catholic origins and continuing links with the Confraternity of Brothers’ Clubs of Queensland who are strong support-ers of the competition. With around 1000 of the best footballers in the State competing at the same venue in the same week, the Carnival is a major event. Talent scouts from many of the NRL clubs will be attending various days of the Carnival and will be looking out for their next signing.

The leadership, skill, and dedication of coaches, the sacrifices and co-operation of parents combine to create a special spirit among the players who unashamedly compete to win or lose with dignity and manliness. It is an honour to play in the Confraternity Carnival! I invite you to look at the Confraternity Carnival page on the College’s website to obtain more information regarding the carnival, and how you can be involved as a volunteer. The CIC and AIC Swimming Carnivals will be held next week at Chandler. Our squad has been training since last year and are sure to put in their very best effort. We wish to provide support at each carnival and so all Year 7 students will go to Chandler on Tuesday (6 March) and all Year 8 and 12 students will go on Thursday (8 March). It is very important that as a community, we support each other. So I ask that parents do not allow students in Years 7, 8 or 12 to view these days as opportunities to have a day off school or to use it to catch up on assignments. This would be unfair and a sign of lack of support for our swimmers. On each day the students will be transported by bus to and from Chandler Pool. Students are to wear their formal uniform (greys) and be at school at their normal time. Students will return to St Patrick’s by PM Tutor Group. Food is very expensive at Chandler and queues quite long, so I encourage all students to bring their own lunch and drinks. Every student should now have their personalised Shore to Gate sponsors card. It is an important community building activity that every student makes some effort with regards to fundraising. The letter each student received highlights the rewards that students are able to achieve. One Year 11 student has already brought in his card with over $100 to ensure he is on the bus going to Wet n Wild next term. Please support and encourage your son to be involved. The funds raised will support our House charities, provide more seating and shade for the boys, and purchase a new House Championship scoreboard.

INDIA IMMERSION

KEEGAN MCCANN

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of the amazing activities and sites. However, on reflection, I think a more effective way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story …..

Whilst in Kolkata I was fortunate enough to visit a place called ‘Loreto Day School Sealdah’, where the Principal in charge left me simply amazed! Her name was Sister Cyril Mooney. When I laid my eyes on her for the first time I was more than surprised at how a woman her size could run a school of 1500 girls, day in, day out. However, they say never judge a book by its cover, so I soon walked up to her and introduced my-self. Then she took the group and I for a meeting to discuss the work she is doing. In doing this I gained an appreciation that she is one of the most humble and intelligent women I have ever come across.

Sister Cyril introduced us all to a different type of Loreto School that we were all used to in Brisbane. She told me that Loreto Day School Sealdah is a school with 1500 female students of which 721 are so poor that every

need has to be taken care of – food, medicines, shoes, books, uniforms and even accommodation (for 200). This led Sister to saying that in her time there she has made up a concept where 50% of the students are from a poor or damaged background and that the other half can afford to pay for an education. But what made this really special was when all students are clothed in the same uniform to promote equality within the school but also teach the girls that they are all equal.

I learned from Sister Cyril that education is a liberating influence which must be open to all and has the potential to challenge social emotions. This really made me believe St Patrick’s can, but also is continuing to, make a difference around the Northside area. Sister drilled the concept that her school takes on the challenge to promote and advo-cate the idea of social sensitization to students in other schools, but also that Loreto Sealdah opens up a place for disadvantaged communities and their girls within the school, because it enables them to access basic rights – educa-tion, recreation and leisure. The main way she does this is through 15 different programs which help the community and its people. “Each student must partake in at least one program” said Sister Cyril. I was involved in 2 pro-grams which were extremely powerful experiences. These were slum school schooling and helping the children out with their education and secondly the Rainbow children program where 200 girls live full time at Loreto Sealdah because they were once trafficked or abused. Both of these experiences will be forever remembered and cher-ished.

After talking to Sister Cyril I can now put a face to the saying ‘one person can make a difference’. Sister Cyril is doing this because of her involvement in Loreto but also her stance on how powerful an education really is!

CURRICULUM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM — CHRIS CAMPBELL

CALLING ARTICLE - MATHS On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Year 12 students who did not attend the Kairos Retreat, were involved in two days of workshops and practice tests for this year’s QCS test. Whilst this test does not take place until Septem-ber, it is important that our preparation commences now. As such year 12 students will undergo workshops and test-ing throughout the year. All Year 12s who were present for the two days are to be commended for the way they approached the tasks. At all times the boys were attentive and enthusiastic in their approach. As I indicated at the workshop success in the QCS doesn’t just depend on knowledge. A positive attitude is also necessary. When the second Kairos Retreat takes place later in the term, the process will be repeated for all students who remain behind. This is the case for both OP and non OP students regardless of whether they intend to sit the QCS Test or not. In recent weeks I have written about the importance of both parents and students reading the College assignment Policy. This can be found in the Student Diary. Could I ask all parents and students, if they have not already done so, to take the time to familiarise themselves with the policy. The issue of printing of assignments is directly related to the Assignment Policy. Students are required to present a hard copy of the assignment at the beginning of the lesson nominated on the assessment planner. This planner has been given to all students and can be found on the student intranet. It does become a problem if students arrive without the assignment already printed, even if the work has been completed and is saved onto a computer. One of the dangers here is that students may attempt to print assignments at school. Whilst the College does have printing facilities, these are more for students to print references relevant to their re-search as part of a unit of work. The two printers in the library cannot accommodate the huge volume of printing necessary if all students attempted to print assignments on the morning of the due date. Inevitably, some students will not have time because the lines at the printers will be too long. Hence, it is advisable that all printing of final copies is completed at home. Unfortunately, if students run short of time attempting to print final copies in the library, we will have no option but to consider the work as late. If there is an issue with home printing, then to be safe I would look to printing at school before, rather than on the due date. In this way the work is sure to be available when it is time to submit.

YEAR 6 AND 8 CAMP Last week the Year 6 and 8 students attended camp and it was an extremely positive experience for both staff and students. I would like to thank the following staff who attended camp: Stephen Graham, Andrew Maynard, Steve Tilyard, Allan Clark, Aaron Kerr, Geoff Samuels, Steve Copping, Sue Corfield, John Tucker, Andrew Pash-ley, Peter Bancroft, Richard Gradwell, Tarrik Morrssi, John Cross, Michael Phillips, Charles Brauer, Craig Gunn, Selena Fisk, Phil de Villers and Julie Parker. I would also like to thank Mr Maclean who also attended the Year 6 camp. INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVALS Week 4 was a big week with two swimming carnivals. The spirit and participation from the students were excel-lent. The Year 12 students certainly led from the front and were very vocal with their spirit. The support the House Leaders gave to the younger students was extremely impressive. Congratulations to O’Rourke House for their overall win. The outstanding swimmers will now represent St Patrick’s at the upcoming AIC and CIC carnivals. Par-ticular thanks to the House Deans who worked tirelessly over both days to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and was full of positive spirit. Overall Results: 1st O’Rourke, 2nd Kennedy; 3rd Quane; 4th Xavier; 5th Rice; 6th Treacy; 7th Mooney Ryan; and 9th Coffey. GREEN AND GOLD DAY will be held on Friday 16 March. Students are allowed to wear clothes to school that are predominantly green and gold. The aim of the day is to provide students with a chance to wear something dif-ferent to school but also to show their pride in their school. Students can wear blue denim shorts or jeans but all other pieces of clothing must be predominately green and/or gold. Closed shoes are compulsory and black school shoes are required for Shop classes. No Thongs or Singlets. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation. ST PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATIONS As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations on Friday 16 March, we will be holding the annual Great Morven Race. 150 boys will participate in a flying dash around the school property and past the historic Morven House in the centre of the College grounds. COMMUNICATION – The College Diary is a significant means of communication between staff and families. Please continue to use the Student Diary on a daily basis. If you have an urgent message that needs to be communicated to your son, please contact the Student Office and at an appropriate time during the day the message will be passed on to your son. If your son has an appointment during the day, please write a note in his diary so he can show his Group Tutor and his classroom teacher. This will ensure your son leaves class at the appropriate time to meet you at the Student Office to sign out. THANK YOU to all the parents and staff who were able to assist with the Social last Saturday night. Congratula-tions to all the boys who attended they were very well behaved and did us proud. It is expectation that all boys demonstrate positive behavior when in public whether at our College Socials or other Colleges. Thank you for your continued support in these matters. Special thanks to the following parents and staff: Lorraine Durigon, Ka-ren Traversari, Anne Phillips, Olita Reupena, Rev. IN-SEASON AND PRE-SEASON SPORT In-Season Always remember that any St Patrick’s College student who has committed to an in-season sport of Swimming, Cricket or Volleyball are expected, without question, to honor that commitment and attend these training sessions and games above all other sporting activities (even if there is temptation is to attend only pre-season training).

PRE-SEASON Increase your communication with the related sports coordinator/s and coaches so that they fully un-derstand what you can commit to and what you cannot commit to with regards to pre-season training, particularly if you are involved in Swimming, Cricket or Volleyball.

TIME MANAGEMENT All students are encouraged to ‘map out’ their weekly commitments on paper so that they can identify what is required and then they can prioritize. This will also prepare them both mentally and emotionally for what is ahead of them that week. ‘Mapping Out’ will assist greatly with getting organised.

OVER COMMITMENT: Should a student find they are over committed they are to ‘drop’ the pre-season training and concentrate only on their in-season sport then pick up on the pre-season training at the conclusion of any in-season activity. Again, communicating with coordinators and/or coaches is essential in these specific situations. Outstanding Achievements Lawrence Graham (Year 12) – selected into the Metropolitan North Under 18 Volleyball team to compete at the Queensland Championships, 22– 25 March in Townsville. Next week our boys compete in the biggest meets of their season- the AIC and CIC Swimming Carnivals. They have been training for this since the beginning of Term 4 last year and next Tuesday (CIC) and Thursday (AIC) will be the final tests of where they stand in 2011. This week’s carnival is at Padua College for both the AIC and CIC boys. It’s our last big hitout, giving us valuable race experience as well as allowing us to final-ise times and teams before next week. It is therefore compulsory that all are there. As always, a bus will be provided to take swimmers to and from school and the venue. The boys are encouraged to bring some afternoon tea and a drink. Training next week will continue to run right up until the Wednesday. Times are detailed as below. A bus will be provided to take students from the pool to school at the completion of training during each morning session. Current Olympic and Australian Coach Ken Wood and his team will continue to coach our swimmers whilst at Redcliffe. Please feel free to take ad-vantage of the great facilities and world class coaching to get the best out of your swimming. Finally, our Sizzler and Movie night is this coming Monday, March 5. As it is the night before the CIC swimming carnival we will

endeavour to have the boys home by 8pm. Details have been delivered to the boys earlier in the week.

Dear Parents of SPC Rugby Players, The Easter holiday period is now under 5 weeks away and I am sure you are all starting to plan how you and your families are going to spend the 2 week break. As you are aware that across the board from Year 5-12 our boys have been engaging in weekly pre-season training culminating in week 8 prior to normal training and trials commencing in weeks 9 and 10 this term. The first week of the Easter period for rugby sees 20 U14 Boys travel to Canberra and 50 U16 & Open rugby players heading to the Sunshine coast for the Annual Easter Tour. The good news is that in the second week we would love to take the remaining boys off your hands for 2 days over the Easter Holiday period to conduct intensive Rugby Camps/Clinics that will greatly benefit your son in preparation for the 2012 season. It is an expectation that all players in each of the following age groups are available to participate in these 2 day clinics. Further details will be sent out via email and through handouts at training in weeks 9 and 10 with more specific itineraries for the clinics. This notification is purely to inform you of the dates of said clinics so you can include them in your holiday plans. Dates for each of the clinics are below (to be held at Curlew Park):
