Cycles of Faith - 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman af- flicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl. Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one story -- the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning. Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disap- pointment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace." HELP NEEDED

We will welcome people to work with us on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am - 4pm, except 7/4 no work. You are welcome to stop in any Tuesday or

Wednesday and lend a hand.

Every time there is a disaster, people ask how a loving and merciful God can allow such things to happen, espe-cially to children. Is there an answer to this? Does God allow these things to happen? The question that never gets a satisfying answer is one that tries to explain the relationship between good and evil, or between God and the devil. When bad things happen, we always look to see who is to blame. We want to know the hows and whys of disaster, as if understanding evil would bring us comfort. But there is no easy answer. Of course, indirectly, God allows these things to happen because God created the world and gave us free will and choice. If God had not created the world, obviously, noth-ing would happen. But when bad things happen, it is not God's choice, but rather that God allows things to happen. Evil, human error, conflict, or the consequence of sin can cause tragedy, pain, and suffering. But God is never de-feated by evil, and can bring grace and goodness from a bad event. The silver lining of suffering is always the heal-ing power of God. In short, God never abandons us, and through tragedy and disaster, walks with us. Where there is evil, one always finds grace. In grace, we find hope; and in hope, we find our comfort. © 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc

Stewardship Reflection July 1, 2018 - 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time “…as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time

should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply

your want, that there may be equality.” 2 CORINTHIANS

8:14

We are responsible not only for our own lives, but for the lives of those around us. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of our Catholic faith. We are the “Body of Christ”. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation.

Is there a loved one you would like to remember by having a Mass said for them? We have several dates available during the year. Stipends are still only $10

per Mass. Contact the parish office to check on available dates.

Organ Recital The Schmelzer Memorial Organ

Thomas Fielding, from Saint Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo, MI will perform an organ concert on Thursday, July 19 at

7 pm at Holy Name Chapel, 702 S. High Point Road in Madison. Admission is free. A freewill offering will be accepted. The chapel is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible.

Band Bread Is Going On It’s 9th Year! Initially we were given one day to pick up donations from Panera Bread. Within 4 months we were told we could have 2 days a week. Now I pick it up 4 days a week. The donations are brought to school on Thursdays when school is session. Now it is distributed to MSCR on Allied Dr. who welcomed me with open arms. Panera Bread is on the ta-bles on Saturday evening Mass and after the morning Masses and after the 7:00pm. This bread and treats are there for Good Shepherd parishioners. It started as a promise I made to a student. She wanted to take Band in school. As everyone knows, learning music is the best way to learn and grow intellectually. Studies show it all over. Google will tell you! I would find a way for her to take band. Some students who really wanted to start band couldn't because families couldn't afford to. I put out the bread on a Sunday morning to give it away and some generous people said they would give me something for my efforts. I decided to save this money and pay for her Band lessons. That is how BAND BREAD came to be. Over the 9 years, Band Bread paid and helped many stu-dents by giving them the opportunity to participate in band. This can only help students, because we all know that devel-oping a well-rounded child includes using both sides of the brain and band/music does that. Over the years numerous students have been awarded band scholarship plus free band rental. Music is purchased for the band and instru-ments are repaired and maintained for students. This year we added a excellent used trombone to the band equip-ment, some percussion pieces and more repairs. Our Band instructor is so grateful.

Band Bread has risen to aid more than Band. Although it has been a vital source of income to promote the band, stu-dents, and the program grow, it has helped others areas of our school, parish, and community. Here are some of the things we were able to do this year with the Extra Band Bread donations.

- donation to bus trips to visit the elderly, trip to Noah's Ark for Mass servers (bus $500), field trip bus costs for students - gifts to food pantries of St. Vincent de Paul - actual bread is used for the hot lunches at school to help defray the cost - jazz band music - $50 GEO bee entry - when other groups are in need, donations are given

Thank Your For Your Support!

Noah’s Ark The Good Shepherd Mass servers took their annual trip to Noah’s Ark, Tuesday, June 12th. We had 67 people in our group this year. The weather was beautiful and the children were on their very best behavior. We gathered at St. James at 8:30am and enjoyed special breakfast treats of homemade muffins provided by Mrs. Haack, St. James Kindergarten teacher. We loaded the bus and headed to Noah’s Ark. We had hot dogs, sandwiches, chips, and other treats for lunch and played in the water until 4:30 when we loaded the bus to go to dinner at Pizza Ranch in Baraboo. We returned to St. James at 7:00pm, exhausted from a great day. Band Bread pays for the balance of the bus fee. A big thank you to the adults and young people who helped carrying coolers, directing and collecting children. With everyone’s help and cooperation the trip again was painless and successful. Have a great summer! Chris Eshun

©2014 Liturgical PublicationsInc
