2014 Stewardship Renewal “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace." ~ 1 Peter 4:10

Stewardship is not something new, but it does require constant renewal. Each year we pause as a parish to con-sider how we are doing on our stewardship journeys -- both as individuals, and collectively as a parish. This month, every registered family of St. Martha will receive a Stewardship Renewal Package in the mail. Enclosed

in your Stewardship packet is a Stewardship Covenant. Our covenant this year goes beyond the doors of the church. It is a way of life that can be lived out each day in many ways. Please take some time to prayerfully reflect about the ways you have been blessed and complete your Stewardship Covenant with God. Please keep this covenant close by over the next year to help you remember the commitment made between you and God. Additional copies are available in the parish office, on the parish website and in the Narthex (on the ministry cart). This year’s Renewal also consists of three different weekends designed to learn more about parish ministries. You will have an opportunity to meet with ministry representatives to ask questions and sign up. Please join us in the Narthex after each Mass on the following weekends:

From the Pastor

To the parish family of St. Martha, The Scripture readings for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time speak of the mission given to the Church that we welcome all to the “house of God.” The first reading from the Prophet Isaiah re-

veals God’s desire that “all nations” embrace the gift of salvation: “All who keep the Sabbath …. and hold to my covenant; them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.” This biblical theme is reflected in the “welcome mosaic” which is above the main entrance to our church: the Lord Jesus welcoming all people to God’s house. When the planning committee was considering this mosaic, the mem-bers wanted to convey several important ideas in this beautiful piece of art. They wanted to connect this im-portant teaching of the Bible to our mission of hospitality as a parish faith community. The name of our par-ish is “Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, the Friends of Jesus” and there has been a tradition since our founding that we learn to live as friends of Jesus and reach out to others and make them feel welcome. In addition, the deepest longings of each human person is the gift of eternal salvation offered to us by the Lord Jesus. As is described in our church brochure recalling the dedication of our new church, “The welcome mo-saic is just that, an invitation from Jesus, eager for us to come together as one, as He gives us the gift of Himself.”

The Gospel text continues this theme and teaches an important lesson about our mission of hospitality. Matthew tells the story of a woman who asks Jesus for the healing of her tormented daughter. The woman is a Canaanite, a member of the people that Israel had conquered when they took possession of the Prom-ised Land. At the time of Christ (and much like Israel today) there existed blatant hostility on the part of Je-sus’ contemporaries towards the Canaanites. The early Church would struggle mightily to deal with such tensions when the disciples were sent to preach the Gospel “to all nations” and not simply to their fellow Jews. Thus, it seems that the evangelist Matthew includes this strange encounter to indicate that even Je-sus came to see that this Canaanite woman also deserved loving acceptance as a child of God. At the heart of this Gospel teaching is the need for the Church to be truly catholic in her proclamation of the Good News and in the way the Church lives out this message in its missionary outreach. Sadly such tensions continue to exist in our world and at times even in our faith communities. We are all in need of being puri-fied by the grace of God. There is a great deal of “missionary work” still to be done in our time. To be missionary means to find those places or situations where Christ is not known or accept-ed fully and to bring the presence of Jesus there. Such missionary work is not accomplished simply by preaching or teaching about Christianity. Rather it is done by being Christian in our ordinary lives and by reaching out to all.
