Lady Rose Marine Services has purchased a small BC Ferries vessel with the intent of expanding its tourism business in Port Alberni’s harbour.

Lady Rose owner Mike Surrell has purchased the MV Tenaka car ferry, which most recently serviced a northern Gulf Islands route, between Quadra and Cortes islands. The ferry was taken out of service in December 2014.

“Our company has been in business

for over 70 years providing passenger and freight service from the Alberni Inlet to Bamfield and Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island,” Surrell said.

“With the acquisition of the MV Tenaka, we will continue to be the biggest tourism operator in Port Alberni employing local staff and supporting local businesses.”

Surrell purchased the ferry following a competitive bidding process. “When retiring vessels from our fleet, our first preference is always to find a buyer who will use the ship for continued commercial operation, so we are pleased that the MV Tenaka will continue to operate right here in B.C.,” said Mark Wilson.

We’ve been working on this for a while.

From A1Wilson is BC Ferries’

vice-president of engineering.

BC Ferries would not disclose how much it received for the Tenaka “as two other ferries will be retired soon and offered for sale,” the company noted in a press release.

Surrell has been planning for this expansion for several years.

“That’s why we grabbed the Shell property when it became available,” he said of the fenced off lot between Lady Rose Marine and what is referred to as the Marine building housing several Harbour Quay businesses, such as Salmonberry’s Emporium.

“We’ve been working on this for a while.

“What the new vessel is going to do is continue the job the Frances Barkley has done to begin with. We are aware it’s a car ferry,” Surrell said, stopping short of saying whether he would be adding

vehicle traffic to his passenger service.

The boats that have been stored behind the fence will be moved and a crane will be brought in to build a new dock for the second vessel. “We’ll have the same

footprint as when they had the fuel dock here,” Surrell said.

Columbia Fuels used to have a fuel dock on the site until 2008, when it pulled out of the Alberni Valley. Soil remediation began in 2011 and Surrell

fenced it off a couple of years ago.

Once the new vessel is in service, the Frances Barkley will move to the new dock space. Lady Rose Marine still has moorage space for another 100-foot

vessel around the corner from the Frances Barkley’s regular berth—the same place the MV Lady Rose sat before it was purchased by Jamie Bray of Jamie’s Whaling Station and brought to Tofino.

“We’re going to bring the vessel home from the Deas dock and we will set it here for maintenance,” Surrell said. “We’re going to work on it through the summer…and in all likeliness we’ll send it to retrofit in the winter.

“It will go into service we think early next year.”

The 43-metre MV Tenaka was built in 1964 in Victoria for BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Highways.

It was originally known as the Comox Queen, and was

renamed Tenaka in 1977. It has a capacity of 100 passengers and crew and 24 vehicles.

Surrell said he bid on the ferry when the RFP went out because of the good maintenance record BC Ferries vessels have.

“The reason I went after a BC ferry is phenomenal maintenance; the vessels are looked after top notch and it guarantees this company’s longevity for many years to come.

“I think it’s going to be a huge thing for the town’s future, especially with the Huu-ay-aht First Nation buying all that property in Bamfield. We’re investing a ton of money in this community again to develop it.”

The Peak radio station has serenaded homes, businesses, vehicles and anywhere else an FM radio can be found with the “sound of the Valley” for 70 years.

This year 93.3 The Peak is celebrating their 70th anniversary and they’re giving away tons of prizes to commemorate the occasion.

For seven decades the Peak has been an all-in-one instrument that Port Alberni folks can listen to for information from all facets of the community.

“[The Peak] brings a central point where people can get their local news, sports and community information all in one place,” said David Wiwchar, operations manager and news director at the Peak.

“They get entertained by the music, by our personalities on the air and it just brings everyone together as a community because people know what’s going on all around them.”

Originally, the Peak was dubbed CJAV Radio when it was founded in April 1946 by Harold Warren, then part owner and operator of the Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni. Over

the 70 years the Peak has seen a chorus of owners and operators ultimately landing in the hands of Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Ltd as the general partner.

In 1964, the radio station sounded the alarm before the first of two tsunami waves hit the community, allowing some people to get out of harm’s way. CJAV staff were also on hand the next day to broadcast the aftermath of the tsunami to the rest of the world.

CJAV is also the radio station where famed Vancouver Canucks’ play-by-play broadcaster Jim Robson got his start.

The radio station started out as an AM station affiliated with CBC, but in April 2005 received permission to switch to FM.

On Sept. 2, 2005, CJAV was officially renamed “The Peak”.

“We’re happy to have been a central point of the community for 70 years and we know we’ll be here for 70 more at least,” Wiwchar said.

“The community really supports us and we support the community so it’s been a great relationship all around.”

Ashleigh Clark has been broadcasting to the Valley as the

afternoon drive and promotions director with 93.3 The Peak for about a year and a half and said she loves the job for its daily dose of diversity.

“Every day’s different at this job,” Clark said. “It’s easy for me to find out what’s going on in town and what’s going on around me and that gives me so many options of what fun things to do in the Valley.”

For their birthday, the Peak is promoting a ‘70 for 70 platinum song of the day’ contest where listeners try their

luck at scoring a prize from a local donor. In order to win the prize of the week, listeners must tune in to Evan Hammond in the morning to hear what the platinum song of the day is. That song will then be played later in the day. When a listener hears the

platinum song they need to call the Peak and if they’re caller number seven they win the prize.

Preparations have already begun for a light industrial mall behind the Alberni Mall.

“The proposal is to construct multi-unit buildings for light industrial and service commercial uses, constructed in phases,” city planner Scott Smith’s report read.

The developer is Colin Evans of Complete Contracting and the property in question is 3.2 acres located at 4905 Cherry Creek Rd. behind Home Hardware. It was sold to Evans by the city earlier this year.

“This development permit only covers the first phase of construction which is about 8,500 sq. ft.”

The light industrial mall is proposed to

consist of five units with and will include space for the owners’ contracting business.

The building will be one story with a

mezzanine creating a partial upper level, Smith said.

“Given the service commercial, light industrial use it’s

mainly one level but with a good high ceiling for those types of uses.”

The property features a 20-metre

right-of-way for utilities on the south side of the property that cannot have permanent structures built over top of it.

Instead, the owner will use the space for parking.

“He’s made good use of an oddly configured property,” Smith said.

We are heartened to hear the news that Lady Rose Marine Services is adding a second vessel to its fleet, and can hardly wait to see what owner Mike Surrell does to expand his tourism operation.

We hope that between the second vessel and new dock that Surrell will start building soon, and the Thunderbird building that the Uchucklesaht First Nation is building across from the train station, the multi-million-dollar investment signals big things for the Harbour Quay area. While Surrell has been coy about whether

he will make use of the vehicle portion of the MV Tenaka car ferry that he just purchased from BC Ferries, we think the idea portends good fortune for the coastal communities that Lady Rose Marine already services. We envision how a car ferry—or even

increased freight passage—will be a benefit to the Huu-ay-aht First Nation as they begin to rebuild the communities of Bamfield and Anacla. And we hope that other forward-thinkers

in the Alberni Valley will take Surrell’s lead and help grow our community.

Delegates support rail funding at AVICCJOHN MCKINLEYBLACK PRESS

Rail service on Vancouver Island got the support of a majority of municipal politicians on Sunday.

But the management in charge of that service will have to wait before it finds out if it will get a similar vote of confidence.

Delegates to the annual Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities

conference in Nanaimo voted in a show of hands by an approximately two to one margin to urge the federal government to release the $7.5 million it has promised to upgrade the tracks.

While the vote is largely symbolic, it did send the message that a majority of communities still endorse the idea of a Vancouver Island rail

system, despite recent concerns expressed by the Capital Regional District and the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Victoria’s Ben Isitt said there is no advanced country in the world without a high-quality rail system and forward-thinking communities need to embrace rail as a better economic and ecological option for the future.

“It’s been an incredible battle. If we walk away now, everything will fail,” Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula said.

Jangula is also a member of the Island Corridor Foundation board.

Owners of the railway, the ICF is the subject of the second rail-related motion on the AVICC agenda.

Southern Rail employees manoeuvre the 1952 Island Explorer excursion train along the tracks at the rail yard on the Nanaimo waterfront last week.Cont’d on A22

Truck Loggers back members at board eventKARLY BLATSALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

During the Truck Loggers Association (TLA) board of directors meeting in Port Alberni on April 7, frustration and concern was apparent from coastal logging contractors towards the industry’s major tenure holders.

“It’s a challenging environment to be in,” said David Elstone, executive director of the TLA. “You have the contractor that is having to go through challenges with the company which resulted in the crews being laid-off since December.”

Last month, Western Forest Products sent home mill workers due to a log shortage which the TLA said was caused by the company’s disregard for coastal logging contractors and the ongoing rate dispute.

The United Steelworkers have since moved towards legal proceedings against Western.

“With all the loggers out of work, the mill workers out of work and the other businesses and community being

affected we’re just trying to say enough’s enough and just speak out to what’s happening,” Elstone said.

The TLA is the voice of the forestry community on the B.C. coast, Elstone said.

The association represents 455 independent forest contractors and their suppliers operating on the coast, with 22 members located in the Alberni Valley.

“Over the last decade or so we’ve had about 30 contractors that have left the industry out of frustration or out of financial distress and we have to ask the question, what is going on?” Elstone said.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Almost 400 cyclists were accounted for in the City of Port Alberni’s bike counts last week.

“Some of the results were quite surprising,” said Cycle Alberni’s Sarah Thomas, who organized the bike counts.

Volunteers counted 388 bikes from 7-9 a.m. and again from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 6.

The bike counts will provide the city with a baseline for cycling along the main arterial routes within the city before any cycling infrastructure is installed.

The distribution of riders was interesting, Thomas noted.

“There’s more people riding in the afternoon on the weekends but even in the morning during the week, there was actually 19 riders on Stamp and Roger. So at least some of those riders are going to work, given that we’re counting before 9 a.m.,” Thomas said.

The busiest routes were in the afternoon, however.

“There were 45 riders counted at the intersection of Stamp and Roger on Saturday afternoon,” she said, adding that it could indicate that the afternoon riders weren’t returning from work but rather running other

errands.“People that are

doing different things like perhaps going to get groceries and doing different tasks,” Thomas said.

The information will be analyzed further before being presented to the city, she added.

“Something that would be interesting to do another time is try to talk to people

and see where they are going to get a bit more of a qualitative sense of how people are using cycling to get around.”

Thomas also hopes to be able to look at traffic along secondary routes—in particular Sixth Avenue—at a later date.

“We only counted primarily on the major routes because that’s

where the bike lanes are being proposed,” she said.

“It would be interesting to see the secondary routes. We know some areas like that but only anecdotally.”

City council has approved $50,000 in bike route funding in its 2016 budget and the city has applied for a matching grant from BikeBC.

Bike counts yield close to 400 cyclists

Rolf Richmond stands near the River Road bridge on Saturday, April 2 counting bikes. His count after two hours was 12 bicycles.

SPORTSKRISTI DOBSONSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Teya Doughty is one step closer to ending her final year of high school with one of her greatest accomplishments of her sports career.

The 17-year-old martial artist qualified for the national championships for taekwondo and will be vying for a position on the podium in May.

When she first started the sport in Grade 5, Doughty was inspired by kung fu movies.

“Jackie Chan was my favourite actor,” she said. “That started the whole thing.”

This year, Doughty is concentrating all of her energy on sparring, and has come a long way from her early days.

“When I first saw a video of people sparring, I was terrified,” Doughty said. “Then after a few years I tried it and loved it.”

She started at Dragon Martial Arts with the goal of acquiring her belts. Then her interests turned to competing and she switched to Port Alberni Taekwondo, where she was able to train for higher levels and tournaments.

Doughty took part in her first competition five years ago and was hooked. For the past three years, she has been to the provincial championships and won both gold and silver medals. Last year, she achieved her coveted black belt and has amped up her training for the final year before graduating from Alberni District

Secondary School.She travels to a

Parksville to train three days a week after school and still makes it to rugby practice in-between. She usually goes to school early to do homework, or stays in at lunchtime. On top of that, she works part-time.

Although she is one of the oldest students at the school in Parksville, she said she looks to some of the younger athletes as mentors.

“I have a friend who is 12 years old who is getting a black belt soon,” she said. “Same with a 14-year old friend. They are amazing at sparring.”

The fights in sparring mainly involve kicking and Doughty said her height is an advantage.

“The leg reach is important because I can reach farther,” she said. “But the disadvantage is that I can’t kick if they’re too close.”

The financial cost to reach her goal quickly add up. Apart from travelling to Parksville, Doughty regularly trains in Vancouver.

“I went to Vancouver in December and trained with a two-time Olympic medalist, an Olympic hopeful and a Canadian Olympic coach, master Lim,” Doughty said. “He’s a really good motivational speaker.”

In April, Doughty will be training every weekend in Vancouver for BC team training to prepare for the nationals, held this year in Calgary on

May 14. “I’ll be training

one and a half hours on Saturdays and Sundays to get to a level to compete,” she said.

While her parents, Mike and Rhonda Doughty have been helping collect bottles to cover some costs, Doughty has also set up a GoFundMe page.

“She had a choice

at the beginning of the year to do recreational or go all out,” Rhonda said. “It is a big commitment on top of a heavy academic load.”

After winning gold in the provincials the weekend of March 12 as the youngest of her division, consisting of 17 to 29 year-olds, Doughty feels confident about her

next challenge.“I’m hoping to get a

medal,” she said.

If she does, it will go well with the bronze medal that

she received from a tournament on March 19.

Taekwondo athlete goes for gold

Teya Doughty, 17, will be competing at the national taekwondo championships in May.

Jacqueline Mary Neuretter (Née Girouard)Jacqueline Mary Neuretter passed away unexpectedly on April 9th, 2016 at West Coast General Hospital. Born on May 31, 1932, in South Nelson, in La Miramichi region of New Brunswick to Octave Girouard and Nathalie Robichaud, Jacqueline, known to friends and family as Jackie, was the youngest of fi ve siblings. She is predeceased by her sister Clara Daniels, and brothers Sterling, Staff ord and Alban Girouard, as well as her son-in-law Mark Spence. She is survived by her husband Ernie Neuretter, daughter Johanna (Richard) Spence, daughter-in-law Joely (Gio) Selva, granddaughters Christina (Jim) Proteau, Vanessa (Eric) Spence, Jaimey Richmond and Angela Spence, and great grandchildren Aria and Jameson. Raised in a largely francophone home where Jackie understood the language but always responded back in English, Jackie fi nished high school in New Brunswick and then travelled for work from New Brunswick to Ontario. Jackie lived in Hamilton working at Loblaws; she went out to the German Club one evening with some girlfriends where she was spotted by Ernie, who was there for dinner. Th ey were married on November 7, 1960. Together with their young daughter, they made their way out West to Port Alberni. Ernie came out fi rst for a job with MacMillan Bloedel and Jackie followed with Johanna on the train through the Canadian Rockies. Both Jackie and Ernie worked for the Pulp and Paper Mill until retirement. Th rough Jackie’s working life and through retirement, she enjoyed a great deal of travel with Ernie, Johanna and eventually her oldest granddaughters Christina and Vanessa. Honolulu, Hawaii fi gured prominently as the main destination, where they travelled to yearly several times. Jackie’s latter years were spent largely socializing and having coff ee with friends and bending whomever’s ear she could fi nd about her grandchil-dren and great grandchildren. She will be missed dearly by those who knew her well or only knew her a little.

Th ere will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Alberni Golf Club.

Donations in lieu of fl owers can be made to the West Coast General Hospital Foundation. Th e family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Dr. Nell, Dr. Feyi and specifi cally Dr. Wijay, as well as the nursing staff at West Coast General Hospital.

Mary and James had two children, Sandra and James. Mary and James immigrated in 1971 to Winnipeg where Sandra was already established, and husband James had a sister and brother. Th is was a big move at their stage of life. Th eir new life in Winnipeg provided them with opportunities to travel, enjoy family and make new friends. James passed away in 2001 and in 2004 Mary moved to Port Alberni to be closer to Sandra and Norm. Another big move. Th is new chapter of her life proved to be wonderful. Tables still available for Days with the ArtsTables are still

available for the Community Arts Council’s “Days with the Arts”. This year’s event has a bit of a twist, as it is going to be part of Solstice Arts Festival—a cooperative arts festival between the Community Arts Council, Art Matters Society, Art Rave and Portal Players Dramatic Society.

The Rollin Art Centre will be the site for the Days With the Arts aspect of the Solstice Arts festival June 17–19.

Table rentals are only $80 for the entire weekend.

Art Rave exhibits

Alberni Art Rave is presenting a two-week art show in the main gallery of the Rollin Art Centre as part of Solstice Arts Festival 2016. Submissions of recent work are encouraged from artists in all fields and media, including video, etc. restriction to size of wall-hung pieces to 24” ×24”.

There is outside display space for

sculpture or other works.

Deadline to enter is Sunday, May 1. E-mail - [email protected] or phone - Chris Doman at 250-736-1010 for more info.

Get your show on

The Rollin Art Centre is still taking applications until April 30, to exhibit at the gallery for the 2017 season.

If you are an artist looking to showcase your work, here is the perfect opportunity.

If you don’t have enough pieces, don’t worry, we can always match you up with another artist to have a joint show.

Applications are available on line or at the Rollin Art Centre.

‘Wander’ to gallery

Our current art exhibit at the Rollin Art Centre is titled, “Wandering”, featuring local photographer, Roland Semjanovs.

He captures the essence in his photographs and has a keen eye for detail. Colourful, vibrant and detailed is what comes to mind when you see

this exhibit. Roland’s photographs mainly focus on nature and our surrounding, from flowers to water, this exhibit is beautiful and serene.

The dirt on news

Susie Quinn, editor of the Alberni Valley News, will be guest speaker at the April meeting of the A.D. Historical Society. Her talk, From Typewriter to Twitter, will eoncompass community newspapers and how they, and the people who gather the news, are weathering technological change. Her career, she explains, began nearly 30 years ago when all her copy was prepared on an electric typewriter. Now she can be found with a MacBook, website, Facebook page, Twitter handle and a blog.

If you would like to know more about the evolution of news gathering (and maybe ask a few questions about the future of our own twice-weekly paper) plan to attend the meeting in the Museum on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission and

everyone is welcome.

We need books

The Community Arts Council giant book sale donations

are down. If you have any books, in great condition, that you are able to donate, pleased drop them off at the Rollin Art Centre, Tues. – Sat., 11-4 pm.

What better way to help the Rollin Art Centre by donating all your books, as well DVDs, CDs and puzzles for their annual book sale.

Mark your calendars

for this year’s two day event, May 13-14 at Echo Centre.

Melissa Martin is the Arts Administrator for the Community Arts Council.

From A6The CRD is calling

for a review of its governance and finances.

AVICC directors halted the debate of resolutions just before that one hit the floor, saying they

had run out of time. It was due to resurface on Monday, after the Alberni Valley News went to press.

A handful of directors said any questions that exist about ICF management must be

kept separate from the issue of rail service.

“The management is a separate question,” Isitt said.

RDN director Julian Fell said the RDN’s recent decision to pull its promised funding rendered

the grant release motion — introduced by Port Alberni — moot. He pointed to an excursion train that toured Nanaimo Friday.

“That may be the last passenger train we see on Vancouver Island,” he said.

But the majority of delegates disagreed.

“There have been many obstacles placed in its way and the foundation has overcome every one of those obstacles,” Nanaimo mayor and ICF Chairman Bill McKay said.

“All we are doing is asking the federal government to release the funds.”

ICF governance review up for discussion

‘Truck Loggers’ From A6“This is a symptom

of something we’ve been predicting for a few years now and finally we’re seeing it happen and we’ve got to see something change.”

Elstone said changes that need to happen are for companies like Western to show more respect for the contractor.

“We are local businesses, we invest our money locally, we support the local economies, we’re the economic backbone of the communities and so that role has to be respected,” Elstone said.

“[Western] is willing to shut down a logging crew that hasn’t worked since December and shut down part of the saw line at one of their sawmills.

“They’re affecting the members of the community and yet they’re recording record profits; certainly they can afford to run the sawmill.”

Changes needed, says TLA

Dievert’s Roofing is cele-brating 10 years in the Alberni Valley with some big changes.

“We have doubled our crew,” says owner Marvin Dievert.

Dievert has recently hired Bob Bagg a journeyman roof-er with 30 years experience and Ed Pluym with 25 years torching and shingling expe-rience.

The new guys join Pat Guil-lemette, with 10 years experi-ence and Dievert himself who has 30 years experience in the industry.

“We use only quality prod-ucts and take a lot of pride in our workmanship,” says Dievert. “We stand behind our workmanship 100 percent.”

Dievert’s Roofing offers roofing services for commer-cial and residential buildings including torch on and fiber-glass laminate. They are fully insured, including fire insur-ance and are Worksafe BC certified.

Dievert says he tries to edu-

cation the building owner with as much information as pos-sible to help them make the best choices for their needs.

Locally owned and operat-ed, Dievert’s Roofing has got you covered.
