A little ‘bit’ of knowledge goes a long way when drilling
Over the centuries, woodworkers
have needed to create holes in their work pieces—be it for joinery, ventilation, or drainage.
Early drills were no more than sharp pointed objects that were spun back and
forth in place to wear a hole through the wood. Although no doubt effective, it was a long, slow, laborious process that achieved rustic results at best. Over time, inventive craftsmen refined the cutting action of the ‘bit’ to improve both the speed of the drilling process and the quality of the hole it created.
These days, we have a wide variety
of drill bits to choose from, and each is designed to excel at a specific drilling task. From exceptionally clean, flat-bottomed holes in fine furniture to quickly drilling through green wood, there is a drill for almost every use.
In this article we’ll take look at the most common bits found in the workshop.
Regardless of the use to which a drill bit
is put, it must perform the same basic function. The bit must have a mechanism for centering itself on the work piece, a method of defining the perimeter of the hole, a way of cutting the material in the hole, and a way to effectively eject this material to prevent the bit from clogging up.
As drilling is often done when the project is substantially along the road to completion, choosing an inappropriate bit could ruin your work—requiring you to redo work to that stage. Choosing the appropriate bit for the intended purpose is critical.
Twist drillsThe twist drill will
be the most familiar. It’s used for metal and plastics as well as wood and when kept sharp does an adequate job in most circumstances. The tips on these bits are sharpened to a point; 118o is common for metal drilling applications and 90o is more appropriate on bits for woodworking.
There is a small web at the point where the two flutes meet. The web serves to twist the fibres out of the way to allow the lip of the bit to begin removing material.
Unlike some of the
more specialized wood bits, the cutting action of this bit is performed by the entire face of the bit, and as a result, these lips must be kept extremely sharp for a clean, tear-out free hole. Though the edges of the flutes may be sharp, no cutting action occurs there; the only purpose the flutes serve is to eject the chips while drilling.
The clearance angle behind the lip must be maintained properly. If there is no relief behind the lip, then
the bit will not cut. It will be impossible to push it into the wood and will just burn its way through the material. If the clearance angle is ground at too extreme an angle then the bit will lack support and will vibrate excessively in the cut.
With larger twist bits, it is advisable to drill pilot holes first. The web can be rather large and this causes the bit to wander off the mark before it starts to cut.
Twist bits for wood can be sharpened
from 60o to 118o. Because these bits are sharpened to a point, they cannot drill flat-bottomed holes. The sharper the point, the shallower the effective depth of the hole for a given thickness of material.

◆ COVER STORY
End of an era for valley winerySUSAN QUINN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
After more than a decade of coaxing grapes to grow in the unique Alberni Valley agricultural region, Vaughan and Joanne Chase of Chase and Warren Winery have closed their doors.
“We’re getting on in years and the amount of money that comes in doesn’t warrant carrying on,” Vaughan Chase said.
Although Chase and Warren’s first bottle of wine was sold in 2003, “the expenses started in 1996,” Chase said. “That’s when the plowing occurred, and the clearing of the land. In 1999 I had 10 rows of grapes in the ground for two years.”
They incorporated in 2000.
Vaughan Chase spent 30 years as a teacher in the Alberni Valley before turning to wine.
“I was interested in it,” he explained. “It was basic interest and we had the property too, 35 acres at the time.
“It seemed like it might work. I’ve proved that you can grow good grapes here—it’s certainly warm enough,” he said.
“The vintning is something different altogether.”
Chase is proud of the way he was able to support the community through his winery. His parents were instrumental in getting Echo Centre up and running, and “I took my responsibility in representing the community by offering
(product) if there was a need.”
Many visiting dignitaries have received Chase and Warren wines as part of community gifts, he said.
This is the final year the winery will produce wine, but Chase said it will probably take two
years to completely close, and they will continue to sell off their inventory of wine.
“It’s going to be hard not to do it,” he said. But it’s time; I’m 65 and I’m tired.”
Changes are already happening at the winery. After six years of development,
Chase Drive was paved to make way for an exclusive subdivision of one-acre view lots, located above the winery, called Grandview Ridge, said Dave Koszegi, realtor for The Dave Team in Port Alberni.

NIC foundation awards $18K to students from Port Alberni
Hailee Mallory was one of 30 NIC students in Port Alberni who received $17,825 in NIC scholarships and bursaries this year, thanks to the generous donations of the Port Alberni community.
“These bursaries have allowed me to achieve my goals,” said Mallory, a university transfer student who spoke on behalf of students at a special NIC Foundation Awards reception held at the Port Alberni campus on Sept. 16. “Without these funds, I would have never been able to even think about
dental hygiene as a career.”
She started her academic career with a few upgrading courses, then moved on to university transfer courses this year. The $3,000 she received over the past four years has been crucial to her educational success.
In 2012 and 2013, she received a total of $2,100 from the Jane Claire Inkster Memorial endowment fund. This year, she received a $500 Alberni Valley Lions Club Bursary from club President Tom Hall as well as the $400 Dr. Michael
Trumper Memorial Bursary from former Port Alberni mayor, MLA and NIC Foundation board member Gillian Trumper.
“Hailee is obviously a very driven person and I’m sure she is going to be a success,” said Trumper, who set up the award in her late husband’s
memory. “It was great to meet her.”
Hall said he has seen the value of NIC and its awards for his eldest daughter who spent two years at NIC before transferring to Simon Fraser University.
“NIC is really in the business of helping students be the best they can be.”

Tofino Bus connects entire Island now
Don’t let the name fool you — Tofino Bus doesn’t just go to Tofino anymore.
As of Oct. 1, Island-owned Tofino Bus
Service has taken over all Vancouver Island bus routes north of Nanaimo and expanded service on established routes between Campbell River and Victoria.
With its new “All-Island Express” service, Tofino
Bus now offers the largest scheduled bus service on Vancouver Island. Alberni Valley passengers will benefit from more frequent connections – three times daily – between Nanaimo, Victoria, Campbell River and all points
in between – allowing for earlier morning and later evening departures.
“When we saw that the former bus service provider had applied to abandon their routes north of Nanaimo, we saw a great opportunity to not only keep that service going, but also expand it in communities along those routes,” says Tofino Bus founder and president Dylan Green.
As an interline partner with Greyhound, Tofino Bus uses all the same stations, accepts Greyhound tickets and freight and has scheduled its buses to coordinate with Greyhound’s Victoria and Vancouver connections.
“Other than passengers getting used to the new name and the more frequent buses between Campbell River and Victoria/Vancouver, it’s going to be a seamless transition,” says Green.
In addition to
the more frequent South Island service, Tofino Bus now also provides daily service to Port Hardy. Naturally, it still offers its namesake daily express service between Victoria, Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino two to three times daily.
Founded in 2002, Tofino Bus has grown from that single route into a true Island-wide coach service, adding four coaches and mini-buses to its fleet and increasing its staff
from 20 to 30.“Employing
local people is just one of our company’s founding philosophies,” says Green. “We’ve always wanted to provide a convenient, car-free way to explore the beauty of the Island, and to do what we can to promote other Island businesses.”
One feature unique to Tofino Bus is that, when pre-arranged, its buses accommodate up to two bikes per departure.
The company also offers discounts for online and advance bookings.
“We’re really excited to bring the philosophy and service of Tofino Bus to the eastern and northern parts of the Island,” says Green. “It’s great to be part of the Vancouver Island entrepreneurial community.”
For route schedules and info on freight, fares and charters, visit tofinobus.com or call 1-866-986-3466.

From / A2Because these bits
come to a point, it can be difficult to start holes at angles. The tip works best for centering the bit when it is perpendicular to the work piece, but when drilling at an angle it will want to roll across the surface like a wheel.
Brad point bitsBrad point bits are
essentially twist drills with a modified tip to address the tendency for the bit to wander at the start of the cut and the tear-out that occurs around the perimeter of the hole.
Brad point bits have a small sharp point at the center of the tip which is designed to engage the wood before the cutting action begins. The centre point securely holds the bit in place, preventing it from wandering.
The cutting action of this bit is broken up into two distinct functions. First, the outer edge of the bit scribes a circle and then the lips lift the material out of the
hole. These bits come in two versions—with and without spurs. On the spurless version the lips are angled out and down from the center with the outer edges of the lip, cutting the perimeter first.
By far, the best version of this bit has spurs on the outer edge, which will sever the fibres around the perimeter before the lips start removing the material in the center. The addition of
these spurs results in a much cleaner, tear-out-free hole. These are a little more stable than twist drills when used at an angle, but still want to roll along the work.
Forstner andsawtooth bits
Forstner bits are ideal for drilling flat-bottomed, clean, tear-out-free holes at any angle. Like the brad point bit, the cutting action is a two stage process. The continuous outer
rim will score the perimeter of the hole while the lip acts like a chisel or plane blade and shaves the center.
Other bits rely on a point at the
centre of the bit to keep it centered on the material but the Forstner uses the outer rim to center the bit on the material. This results in the Forstner bit having several properties that make it very useful in the shop.
Because it is the outer rim that keeps
the bit centered in the cut, it is possible to easily drill overlapping holes without the bit breaking through into the existing hole.
The continuous rim establishes a cut that will guide the bit as it penetrates the surface and starts to remove material. Forstners also excel at cutting holes in very thin material.
Because the rim is continuous and remains engaged throughout the drilling process, it limits the depth of cut, removing only a small amount of material with each revolution. So, while you get an extremely clean hole, even on non-flat pieces, the outer rim will heat up rather
quickly. To keep this bit cutting cleanly and to reduce heat build up, make sure that the outer rim is kept sharp and use the bit at low speeds.
The main disadvantage with this bit is that at depth, the chip ejection leaves something to be desired. If the bit is not backed out regularly to clear the material from the cut, they have a tendency to jam in the hole.
For holes more than one inch in diameter, sawtooth bits are the right choice; they have an edge that resembles the teeth on a saw. Both bits should be used in a drill press.
Next week: drill and countersinks.
Debating the merits of drill bits for different jobs
MICHAEL KAMPEN/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Forstner bits are best to use when drilling flat-bottomed holes.
‘Other bits rely on a
point at the centre of the bit to keep it
centred on the material but the Forstner
uses the outer rim...’

Gardens need help Drop, cover and hold on Oct. 15Alberni Elementary
School is seeking volunteers to help with their community garden project.
The Alberni Elementary Gardens are in need of some TLC to get them ready for growing action. A work party has been organized for Saturday, Oct. 17 at 9 a.m. to pull
weeds, tidy up the gardens and pathways. Volunteers are being asked for one hour of their time, for a onetime commitment.
“After this (the gardens) will be maintained by an open group garden club and students,” a spokesperson said.
The club asks if anyone is able to bring
wheelbarrows and shovels to use during the work party, it would be appreciated.
The gardens will give children the opportunity to grow and eat local foods, learn about nutrition and how to make better food choices.
Students will also learn important life skills.
British Columbians will be dropping, covering and holding on during the BC Shakeout on Thursday, Oct. 15.
More than 740,000 participants have already signed up for the event, which will happen at 10:15 a.m.
Schools from School District 70 (Alberni Valley) will be participating, as
well numerous businesses and organizations.
The PEAK 93.3 FM in Port Alberni will have an audio warning for the BC Shakeout at 10:15 a.m. next Thursday, to alert the community that it is time for an earthquake drill.
Official rescue teams who have been dispatched to the scene of earthquakes and other
disasters around the world advocate the use of the internationally recognized “Drop, Cover and Hold On” protocol: drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table (or huddle in an inside corner), and hold on until the shaking stops.
For more information, you can go online to shakeoutbc.ca.
