The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce is the voice of busi-ness in our community. With a membership of nearly 300 busi-nesses, the chamber of com-merce speaks with authority on behalf of businesses in the Val-ley and supports the growth and development of new and exist-ing businesses. Businesses in the Alberni Val-

ley face several challenges in 2015. There is a new mayor and council working on a new bud-get, a pending federal election, a BC Ferries rate initiative, pres-sures on minimum wage hikes, and many other business-relat-ed matters that need input from businesses. The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce provides that input. At the local City level we know

that the budget will be front and centre over the next while and there could be pressure to raise business taxes. We understand the fiscal challenges facing the city, but at the same time we understand business. Our civic affairs committee is monitoring the budget discussions and the chamber has stated to the city that business taxes should not increase. We are on top of the BC Ferry

situation and believe that with our strength as a local chamber, and as member of the BC Cham-ber of Commerce that we have a say in things. And certainly from a minimum wage perspective – we have an opinion that mirrors that of all chambers, that busi-ness, especially the service sec-tor, cannot support a near 50 per cent minimum wage increase. The Alberni Valley Chamber of

Commerce has also implement-ed several initiatives since 2013 to support and grow local busi-ness. The chamber started by listen-

ing to local businesses by part-nering with the City to conduct a business retention survey in 2013. The results of that survey gave the City and the chamber vital information that is shaping the way business is done here. The chamber has increased

its networking opportunities by holding a monthly dinner meet-ing with relevant guest speakers that keep local business people informed. Fifty to 100 business people attend these dinners, held at a different restaurant in town every month. Another new initiative is Busi-

ness B4 Business networking events. Held once a month, and

hosted by a local business, this is a casual, free opportunity to network with others and get to know a local business over cof-fee and a muffin before you head to work. Between networking opportu-

nities, the chamber keeps it’s members and the community informed with a semi-monthly newsletter emailed to more than 700 addresses, facebook post-ings and a recently redesigned website. The Alberni Valley Chamber of

Commerce also promotes lo-cal businesses in a number of ways. Every year we recognize the strength of local business with our Excellence Awards. This year the chamber received more than 600 nominations in 13 categories! Winners will be announced at a Gala event April 24. The visitor information centre

connects with more than 30,000 visitors annually who are en-couraged to stay and explore the Alberni Valley. With our beauti-ful visitor centre at the entrance to town, a mobile visitor centre van that travels around town and to events, and our Ambassador programs at Cathedral Grove, aboard the Francis Barkley and

on the McLean Mill Steam Train, visitors can’t miss us!Shop local initiatives, such as

the 24 Days of Christmas give-away, encourages locals to sup-port the businesses that support the community. In the summer, the Sunset Market at Victoria Quay, encourages locals and visitors to enjoy local music, food, and vendors in a beautiful setting. The market is held in partnership with the Hupacasath First Nation. There are many other benefits

to being a member of the Al-berni Valley Chamber of Com-

merce. Our group insurance program, administered by a lo-cal representative, offers health insurance programs for small businesses at an affordable rate. Other discounts and benefits in-clude preferred rates on courier services, credit and debit card transaction services, payroll services, office supplies, fuel, hotel and car rentals. There’s so much more to the

Alberni Valley Chamber of Com-merce. To learn more contact executive director Bill Collette at [email protected]. or 250-724-6535.

Putting out fires around the Valley◆ COVER STORY

Volunteer fire departments in Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek and Sproat Lake are looking for new recruits.

KATYA SLEPIAN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Cherry Creek volunteer firefighter Sarah Randall, Sproat Lake fire Chief Wade Hepp and Beaver Creek volunteer firefighter Nick Bachmeier hitch a ride in a Beaver Creek fire truck.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Ever wanted to fight fires? Well, the Valley’s volunteer fire departments want you!

That’s the message from region’s three volunteer fire halls, who’ve coordinated their efforts this year in an attempt to reach a wider audience.

“We’re trying something different with all three departments trying to do a recruitment drive at once,” Sproat Lake fire Chief Wade Hepp said. At 38 volunteer firefighters, Sproat Lake is the biggest of the Valley’s three volunteer fire halls.

“We’re always looking for extra hands,” added Cherry Creek fire Chief Mike Sparrow.

While with 24 firefighters the Cherry Creek volunteer fire department isn’t short

on hands, Sparrow said that the nature of volunteer firefighting makes for a high turnover rate.

“Some people retire, some people move on.”

At 34 firefighters, the Beaver Creek volunteer fire department is “at a

pretty good number right now,” fire Chief Charlie Starratt said, but added that he’d like to see that number increase to 40.

The commitment for a volunteer firefighter is designed to fit around a standard work schedule.

There’s two hours of training every Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m., with more sessions on weekends as time permits and of course, responding to calls.

While the time commitment can be significant, there’s a lot to be gained by

joining up.“All of our members

are trained as first responders and in general firefighting duties. We do it all.” Starratt said.

Doing it all ranges from learning about fire behaviour and building construction, to how to use ropes

and ladders and perform evacuations and hazmat operations.

It’s also free to join.“All the training and

equipment is all taken care of,” Hepp said.

“A volunteer just needs to have the willingness to commit the time and want to give back to the community.”

There’s no prior experience needed.

“We have no prior requirements, just that they’re fit to do the job,” Starratt said.

The experience gained at volunteer fire departments can be especially useful for those looking at a career in the emergency services.

“We have four or five past members working for the city [fire department] right now. It’s a good stepping stone into the career service,” Starratt. said.

Career firefighting

isn’t the only area Starratt has seen his past volunteers go into.

“I’ve had half a dozen members move onto the ambulance service.”

While it’s preferable for prospective volunteers to join the fire department in their area, city residents are welcome to join any of the three departments.

“If you live in town then by all means we would definitely look at taking you on.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can visit the fire departments’ respective Facebook pages or call the Beaver Creek Fire Department at 250-723- 2313, the Cherry Creek Fire Department at 250-723-2254 or the Sproat Lake Fire Department at [email protected]

City to present 2015 draft budget at Echo Centre on Feb. 25KATYA SLEPIAN

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

With departmental budget presentations having come to a close last week, the city is presenting its 2015 draft financial plan to residents.

The session on Feb. 25 will consist of a presentation of the plan by mayor Mike Ruttan and city manager Ken Watson, followed by focus groups moderated by city councillors where residents can discuss the plan and ask questions.

“There’ll be what’s in the plan right now with what the increase is and there’ll be some scenarios about how we can reduce it and then we would have some scenarios for projects that are not included in the plan

that people might want to see included and how much extra those would be.”

Ruttan said that the groups will look at up to half a dozen focus questions related to

the budget.“As a council we

really want the citizens of Port Alberni to understand what we’re wrestling with as a council. It is not a simple thing

to just say well we’re going to do an across the board two per cent cut or three per cent because there are implications.”

Ruttan is especially concerned about the

effects of not investing in the city’s core services.

“If we choose not to increase then there’s implications down the road, particularly in terms of the city’s

core responsibilities. We’re dealing with aging infrastructure, we know we’re going to have to address that.”

The city’s presentation of

the 2015-2019 draft financial plan will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Echo Centre. The public is encouraged to attend and give their input.

Abuse and you lose—it’s simpleA seven-and-a-half

minute video titled “Please help me,”

posted on Facebook by a 25-year-old mother from Kelowna, went viral last week.

In it, Selina Morrison asked people to assist the police in looking for her “now ex-boyfriend” and described the events from two nights prior when he allegedly became enraged, cornered her in the bathroom, pushed her up against a wall and threatened to break her teeth while punching his fist through the wall to demonstrate his intent.

Almost two hours later the police investigated, found no proof of abuse and released him with a no-contact order. Selina said he breached that condition within 10 minutes and insisted that she drop the charges against him. His complete disregard for the consequences of breaking the law, coupled with the fear that any woman in the future could experience the same attack or worse, kept her from complying.

She called the police to report him again, but her boyfriend of three months could not be found. Afraid he would follow through on his physical threats to her, and the ones he reportedly made to the father of her young

daughter, she named him in the video, showed his picture and asked people to report him to authorities if they knew of his whereabouts.

The response was overwhelming. Within seven hours the video had been viewed 13,500 times and he was in custody.

There was an outpouring of gratitude extended to Selina for bravely posting her story in such a public way, and many women shared their similar experiences. Among them were four women who had previously dated her ex and claimed to have suffered abuse from him. In addition to all the online attention, there was a tremendous amount of media coverage.

While I admired her courage and the compassion of all the people trying to help, I wondered if there would have been nearly that level

of support or exposure if Selina had been a man. I don’t think so.

Domestic abuse is not a gender-specific crime, yet in almost every story we hear about, the offender is male and the victim is female. Women are also capable of mentally and physically desecrating their partners, and according to Statistics Canada, 40 per cent of adult domestic abuse targets are men.

Despite this, the comparatively rare stories of an adult male being the recipient of intimate partner violence are often portrayed and perceived as amusing.

Why is abuse regarded any differently when the victim is male? It shouldn’t be.

Mistreatment of any kind against anyone is unacceptable. Selina Morrison completely agrees. “I don’t consider

myself a feminist,” she told me during our meeting. “I’m a humanist. Abuse is not limited to gender, age, race, income or social status, it can happen to anybody.”

I applaud this young woman for speaking out before the threats of physical harm against her became a reality. And I commend every victim brave enough to put shame and fear aside to report their abusers, whether it’s the first time or the one hundredth time it’s happened to them.

The only way to stop the cycle is to break the silence and seek help. And the only way to assist victims who don’t feel safe when their perpetrators aren’t locked up is to implement a better way to protect them.

Selina is committed to helping push past the social taboos of domestic abuse, provide better resources for victims from every walk of life, and change the laws to protect them from being re-victimized. She wants people to share their own experiences and asks the public to keep spreading her story, believing that the power of numbers will make the message stronger and united for all.

Valley SENIORS Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni

seniors complexes.

We recently met with some of Echo

Village staff members who were busy loading their bus with residents and getting ready for an afternoon trip. This scene takes

place several times a week throughout the year as the residents go to various places in town for shopping excursions, sightseeing tours, concerts, special community events, or

on visits to friends. “The bus trips

are important components of the social life of the residents,” says Mitzie Colyn, Echo Village program coordinator since 2001.

“This allows them to continue taking part in various community activities and continue being in touch with places and people they had been associated with in the past,” she adds.

Echo Village, a 67-room, multi-level care facility, (subsidized residential care) opened its doors to the community on June 15, 1992, becoming Fir Park Village’s sister facility, both under the umbrella of the Alberni-Clayoquot

Continuing Care Society. This building has been the home to hundreds of seniors who have benefited not only from accommodation

and nutritious meals, but also from the provision of a wide range of activities aimed to fulfil their social, physical and spiritual needs.

The Department of Programming staff offers programs of activity seven days a week for a healthy lifestyle. These programs include daily exercise sessions and assisted walks; painting classes; films and slide shows; discussion on the news of the week; church services; music therapy; and many games, such as:

bowling, frisbee toss, curling, cribbage, etc.; crafts and baking; special lunches (“Lunch Bunch”); and the always popular bus trips, which include lunches at local restaurants, picnics in the summer; Pub Nights at Fir Park Village; and various community events. The Echo Villagers socialize with their friends and neighbours of Fir Park and Heritage Place at

various events as well.Echo Village also

celebrates every calendar event, from Valentine’s Day to Victoria Day and more, as well as birthdays.

Volunteers play an important role in the life of the residents. They assist the staff in the procurement of meaningful programs, ranging from walks, group exercises, to reading and storytime sessions. In addition,

dozens of them bring their musical talent and giving spirit to the Village population. Almost daily, their music is heard through the main public areas and hallways of the building.

“Music is such an important part of our programs, especially as a reminiscing tool for those whose memory has been lost. They love it,¨ says Colyn.

“We all tend to relate to past events by listening to musical tunes, thus, having them offering such an entertaining tool, that provides hours of enjoyment and reminiscing to the residents, make a big difference in people’s spirit. We now have a special program regular musical evening session on Tuesdays,” she adds.

Echo Village has much to offer seniors
