◆ COVER STORY

History makers making history at Sproat Lake regattaREGATTA 2015: | Boats will race again at Sproat Lake from July 17–19, which is good news for former lake champion Joe Van Bergen.

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Joe Van Bergen is, by his own admission, a little slower now. In his 80s, he is not quite as spry as he was in his 20s and 30s. His passion for drag boat racing, however, has never waned since he was a Canadian racing champion in the 1950s.

Van Bergen still lives at Sproat Lake, where he spent his childhood. When he was younger he used to attend all the Sproat Lake boating regattas, and in 1953 entered a boat with a friend. It was a 12-foot boat with a two-horsepower motor, and they entered a class where “anybody with a motor could race,” he said.

When the final regatta was run on the lake in 1963, Van Bergen held a Canadian speed record that still stands.

Now, Van Bergen

spends his spare time enjoying life at the lake—and helping revive the regatta. He and the regatta committee are busy finalizing plans for the 2015 event, planned

for July 17–19 at the provincial park boat launch.

Ray Nash was too young to race when the regatta was at its most popular, but he still caught the bug.

“I was at all the races out there,” he said.

“I found out a lot about racing from Joe because he was a local hero at the time.”

Nash bought his son Mike a 1.5 horsepower Elgin eight-foot hydroplane when he

was five or six years old, and the young Nash raced that around Sproat Lake.

Sometime in the 1980s the record-breaking Miss British Columbia drag boat came to Sproat Lake to make a few passes. Her driver had broken the speed record at 202 miles per hour.

“When he fired that thing up they could hear it in the Alberni Valley,” Ray Nash said.

Mike Nash was 15 when Miss British Columbia came to

town.“He saw that boat

and that finished him,” Ray said proudly. Mike Nash spent 20 years as president of the now-defunct Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association, serves on the Sproat Lake association and won the unlimited class at home last year. He now owns his own drag boat manufacturing company, Haulin Nass Racing.

He will be back to defend his title in July.

One day, Van Bergen and Nass would like to see the regatta become as large as it was in the late 1950s.

“We used to get 200 entries in each category. We would get up to 5,000 spectators,” Van Bergen said.

Last year’s entries didn’t come close to the regatta’s heyday, but it was still a success.

Until then, the regatta is taking baby steps. In addition to the regatta itself in July, the association will host an outrigger canoe exchange race on the August long weekend.

Focus on home reveals photo gems

I took a two block walk with the famous Nikon camera to the

local 7-Eleven store while pretending that I had never walked that route and had never seen the scenery. I came back home with 20 different wonderful images (of course the fact that I was using the miraculous 10~20mm wide-angle lens helped).

I then took the smart card out of the camera, inserted it into the MacBook Pro and proceeded to download four images at a time into the Photoshop Raw Editor. Since I had shot the photos in RAW to retain the full range of colours instead of JPEG the images opened in the RAW editor before going into the Photoshop Editor.

I brightened up the images and the colour a bit using the Exposure, Black, Clarity, and Vibrancy keys. In Photoshop I checked the image Levels then saved the image as a 9-inch by 14-inch 39MB TIFF

(non-lossy format), went back to the image, chose the brush tool, stamped my copyright on the image, changed the size to 4”x6” 75 PPI image and changed the file format to JPEG (lossy format). I then

saved it as a 350kb email copy.

I now had a working photo in TIFF format along with a copy photo in JPEG format that was ready to be emailed.

The photo of the three daffodils was

shot using 400 ISO, 10~20mm lens set at 20mm, aperture f10, shutter speed 1/640 of a second.

Les has now been in England for two long lonely months without a car; she has almost finished probate and

had put her ancestral home up for sale by sealed tender bids subject to probate. The tender process ended March 27 at which time she had four sealed bids ready to be opened and perused. Les did not choose the highest bid but the most secure bid that had cash available.

Because landline telephones in England are so exorbitant and charge the phone call by the minute, I call Les every other day from Canada. We have a Telus phone package that has free North America calls and 1000 International minutes per month so I am taking full advantage of it.

The last time that we spoke Les said that she is ready for me to walk in the front door right now. I will be leaving for England again to help with house sale, probate and whatever else that I can help with. We will be spending some time together in

England doing touristythings before we have to hop on a plane for another 11-hour flight.

Our poor little Jasper dog can’t quite figure out what is going on. Jasper is a rescue dog that we acquired from “Paws Without Borders”; he was brought up here from L.A. where he was wandering the streets searching for food, shelter, and friendship.

Since last August Lesand I left him alone in the house with Lil (houseminder), I then came back without Les and Lil left, now I am leaving and Lil is coming back: no wonder he is confused and has separation anxieties.

NORMAN SILVERSTONE/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

‘Tres Amigos’, or Norman Silverstone’s photo of a trio of white daffodils, is an example of the type of photos you can find walking around your own neighbourhood—or in this case, near a 7-Eleven.

Think lost, not stray when approaching dogs

For more than two weeks my life has been consumed

with trying to find our beloved dog, Charlie. Between putting up flyers, chasing tips, social networking, actively looking, and managing emotions on the home front, it’s remained all-consuming.

Educating myself on how to think like a dog has taken some time as well, but it’s been a necessary step to finding our boy.

I’d had this vision of calling out Charlie’s name and him bounding out in front of me, wagging his tail at finally being found. But I’ve learned the longer a dog is

missing the less likely they are to respond to their own name or show themselves at all.

At first I was asking people to grab Charlie if they saw him.

I soon learned that was the wrong thing to say.

After a dog’s been on their own for a

time they enter a frightened, semi-feral state and even their family can appear threatening. Chasing after a lost pet will often exacerbate the problem since they’re likely to run and become even more lost and in danger.

Now I ask people to take a picture if

they can and notify me or dog control immediately. The picture helps to confirm it’s actually our dog and we’re searching in the right area.

I also encourage people who want to help with his actual rescue to try attracting him by

lying on the ground and speaking softly, offering food if they have any. This non-threatening stance will feel safer and more inviting.

From / A3The notion that

lost dogs are stupid because they can’t find their way home or abused because they won’t approach a human is incorrect. We have no idea what they’ve gone through. They might have

been chased several times, they may have narrowly missed being hit by a car, or they may be injured. Any harrowing experiences combined with having to suddenly find their own food, water and shelter in unfamiliar

surroundings without their families will put them in a survival mode where their animal instincts kick in and they can become skittish of everything and everyone.

Lost dogs usually settle in a residential neighborhood, ranch or farm where their needs can be met and they’re able to hide out undetected for weeks or months on

end. They typically stay in places that have a quick getaway route, like a woodsy area they can escape to.

They often seek refuge in garages, workshops, playhouses and under balconies. They will hide if they hear people coming so it’s almost impossible to find them unless a sighting’s reported. At that point, it’s

important not to scare them away and call the owner or Dog Control so they can coax them to safety.

There are a lot of helpful tips on the Internet to finding lost pets and for anyone who ends up in the unenviable position that we’re in now, I highly recommend reading up on it right away.

This heartbreaking experience has brought out both the “crazies” and the “compassionates.” I could give you several examples of the former, but I’ll just say one of the worst was the scammer who pretended to have Charlie and threatened to cut off his head and leave it on our doorstep if we didn’t put money in his account.

Thank goodness the wonderful people have far outweighed the terrible, and for us that’s really been the big positive since losing him on March 23. Friends and complete strangers have helped us by

sharing our posts on social media, sending us encouragement, telling us their stories, giving us advice, putting up posters, and actively looking for him as well as other lost pets in our community.

So far five people believe they’ve seen Charlie, but none of them said anything until hours after when they saw my ad.

We are grateful for their help, but if we, as a society, automatically respond to an unfamiliar dog out and about on it’s own in the same way we would seeing a toddler on their own, more lost dogs would be found.

In the past two weeks I’ve heard so many stories of people keeping cats and dogs they

considered a stray without first reporting them to the SPCA. While they might be well intentioned, this is theft and it’s completely crushing to the family missing their treasured pet.

The idea is to think lost, not stray.

If the animal has been reported to the SPCA and no one claims it, then it can be put up for adoption.

But these steps must be taken or lives can be deeply affected in a devastating way, especially for those of us who see our pets as family.

We still haven’t found our precious Charlie, but every day we wake up hoping this will be the day that we do.

We’re offering a large reward to anyone with a tip that leads to his safe return and we hope we’ll be paying up soon.

Todd Rumney, Holley Cameron and Bob Courser opened The Flooring Depot on Third Ave in 1998.

They have been ooring the Alberni Valley ever since.

Starting with just three installers, the store now keeps seven busy installing carpet, hardwood, laminate and tile.

The owners credit their success to a great relationship with their customers. At the Flooring Depot there isn’t any high pressure sales, just friendly service.

For the Do-It-Yourselfer, the Flooring De-pot has everything needed for any ooring project and the helpful advice to get it done right. Including the right tools and products from start to nish.

The Flooring Depot also carries a wide se-

lection of custom window coverings to com-plete any room.

The staff also provide design advice for creating the perfect space, from the oor up. as well as expertise on the best products for your room and needs.

Bring in your measurements or they will come to you and give you an estimate on the look you want.

From large commercial jobs like the new Ford dealership, to a one-room upgrade in your home, The Flooring Depot can handle any ooring or window covering job.

The Flooring Depot attributes their more than 15 years of success to friendly, knowl-edgeable service that goes above and be-yone to serve the Alberni Valley and the West Coast.

More than just oors
