Horses hitched up as inn hearkens back to past

For the first time in about half a century, a hotel on Johnston Road in Port Alberni has had hitching posts installed for its equestrian business.

The Blue Marlin Inn has installed two hitching posts to accommodate their summer horse and carriage rides, which Dana and Kerry Salisbury of Beaver Creek provide every week.

This is the second year the Blue Marlin is offering carriage rides during the summer. Last year wranglers tied the horses to a signpost or had to hold onto them.

The Blue Marlin Inn has only been called so for not quite three years; it was built in 1893 by Matt

Ward as the Arlington Hotel, and remained so at the corner of Johnston Road and Margaret Street until it was sold in 2012.

Glen A. Mofford, who blogs about historic drinking establishments in British Columbia, calls the former Arlington Hotel “A defiant survivor where thousands of patrons have lodged and countless more have enjoyed imbibing in its saloon, in the beer parlour and eventually in the Arli pub, all the while contributing to

the hotel’s colourful history.”

The Arlington was the second hotel to be built in Alberni.

The three-storey building had a large veranda on the front, included a dining room that sat 90 as well as a “modern” saloon. Jack Burke and Harry Fitzgerald opened the Alberni Livery Stable across Margaret Street from the Arli, which complemented the hotel and saloon.

The livery was a mainstay on the corner until the 1940s, when Chatwin Motors took over.

No records could be found at the Alberni and District Archives about when the Blue Marlin last had a hitching post, museum executive director Jamie Morton said. The switch to

electricity in the building in the early 1900s was more notable, and was even marked in minutes from a February 1913 Alberni city council meeting, during a report on the matter.

Tim Sherwood installed the two new hitching posts after gaining permission from city planner Scott Smith and painted them bright yellow (so motorists can see them). the posts are made from steel pipe courtesy of Dast Welding, and sunk two feet into concrete to keep them stable.

Sherwood used horseshoes from one of his own horses to create the tie-ups.

“I was going to use my draft horse’s shoes but they were way too big,” he said.

In one way or another, virtually everybody dreams of standing out,

being admired, acclaimed—even, well, applauded.

To be viewed, and self recognize as merely “average” or “adequate” really doesn’t do very much for a person’s well-being and/or their ego. Being acknowledged by others helps a person to feel more accepted, secure and more self-comfortable. More importantly, such recognition assists a person to feel desirable, valuable, and esteem able or in a word, distinguished.

During the week of June 7–13, the people of Port Alberni took the opportunity to honour and celebrate seniors for their leadership, knowledge and contributions to daily lives. Is distinguished how the world views the swelling ranks of the seniors?

Some of the terms typically used to describe older

folks are far from distinguished. Wrinkled, grumpy, crotchety, absent minded, forgetful, fragile, feeble, past their prime, stuck in the past or a burden on society are just a few. This is not how anyone might wish to be perceived by the world.

Perception is a psychological term that describes what people react to and act as if it was reality. Perception is a kind of story, made up of filtered memories, projections, assumptions, and most importantly interpretations of situations.

People can perceive what is not present, or not perceive what is present. People see what others expect them to see, don’t see what is “off the radar,” and reframe the information with personal beliefs and upbringing.

What causes the trouble is that perception gets promoted to “truth,” and people fall into the trap of really believing “it is so”.

Thanks to the “can-do” attitude of the new up and

coming group of seniors, the baby-boomers, (those born between 1946 and 1964), there seems to be little choice but for the world to reevaluate how it perceives seniors. As these people turn 65, the number of seniors could exceed the number of children for the first time in Canada’s history.

Today, one in seven Canadians is aged 65 or over. By 2036, nearly one in four Canadians will be a senior.

And it will be that “can-do” attitude of the baby-boomers, not just the numbers, that will change perception.

According to a 2002 study by Yale professor Becca Levy, Ph.D., it is the subconscious programming of what a person unknowingly believes, negative thoughts about aging that come from society that undermines health and has long-term destructive consequences. In fact, the benefits of a positive attitude were far greater than any mind exercises, healthy habits,

physical exercise, diet, anti-aging genes or magic pill.

The most important trait in cultures with long life is the holding of the attitude of not seeing aging as an inevitable descent into decrepitude.

Amazingly, it turned out that those who had the power of positive thinking in regards to aging lived 7.5 years longer on average than those with negative perceptions of advanced age. Knowing how to be positive about aging had a larger impact on their health than any of the other traditional factors of longevity such as not smoking, having low cholesterol levels and exercising.

The reality is that if people are fortunate enough to get old they will experience increasing dependence on others for the basic requirements. What needs to be recognized is underneath the wrinkled skin is spirit, strength of will, an attitude that should be cause for inspiration, not ridicule.

For most baby boomers, age 65 is really the beginning of being “distinguished”.

Aging vs. growing old gracefully; how is it different?

The fight for a cure carries on

Kim Findlater is what some refer to as a

helicopter parent, constantly hovering nearby, watching that her child is safe and out of harm’s way. But this style of parenting wasn’t one she chose—rather it was thrust upon her when her seven-year-old daughter Arielle was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, also called type 1 diabetes, in late September 2013.

It was a disease she and her husband never saw coming.

“I always thought it was genetic,” Kim said. “Or something brought on by a poor diet, it wasn’t anything we ever worried about.” But looking back, she can now recognize there were signs.

Arielle would come home from school, drink copious amounts of water and frequent the bathroom. Kim figured it was because she wasn’t allowed to leave during class and was therefore not drinking enough

during the day.She had also become

very skinny. Her appetite was large, so her thinness didn’t worry her parents. They thought she was just going through a growth spurt.

And she was tired. A three-hour nap in the middle of the day that resulted in her waking up looking fatigued and not her vibrant self had her parents taking her to the doctor. Blood samples

were ordered and with a blood glucose level at 16 she was immediately admitted to the hospital where she would stay for the next seven days.

Her body had been feeding off itself and she had to endure countless needles to get her glucose levels balanced. Dehydrated and constipated, she also had to drink a disgusting potassium drink or she’d end up in the intensive care unit at the hospital.

“We bribed her with gifts to get her to drink that vile stuff,” Kim said. “Between that and

blood samples every half hour, the poor kid proved to have stronger nerves than us.”

Her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes came as a shock, and her life, and the lives of her family, would forever be changed.

Already busy with Arielle, and another daughter Isla, who was 18 months old, Kim was about to restart her own small business as a nail technician after maternity leave. But she had no idea how much would change until she lived the reality of the new

diagnosis. A crash course on the disease she knew little about would start it off.

Type 1 diabetes can happen to anyone, it’s not preventable and you can’t pre-test. It’s a chronic condition that usually appears during childhood or adolescence in which the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin, a hormone that enables us to get energy from food.

Fortunately, through medical research, great strides have been made and it’s no longer a death sentence.

The horse and carriage rides will be offered every Thursday through Sunday in the summer as well as during special events.

The inn offers the carriage rides to tie in with the heritage theme of the establishment, said inn spokesperson Sue Hopkins.

“Susan is our cousin and we’ve been doing this for many years,” Kerry Salisbury said. “(The Blue Marlin’s owners) were looking to for somebody and

she automatically thought of us. I think it’s something that’s going to do well here,” she said.

“It’s part of our heritage, part of the heritage of this building.”

Horses are also a part of the Salisbury family’s history, as is the former Arlington Hotel, she added. “We were born and raised here. We came here for coffee with Dad, coffee with his cronies, when we were kids. And we drank here as teens when we came of age. This is almost a dream come true for Dana and I.”

The routes they take vary, says Dana Salisbury. “We have a few different routes depending on the

length of the ride you want to go on,” she said.

The carriage traverses the blocks around Johnston Road and Victoria Quay, Margaret Street and up to Roger Creek Splash Park, and even along Stamp Avenue to Harbour Quay and back for the longest route, she said.

“We try and incorporate some of the history, especially with the hotel, Salisbury said.

“Talking to some of the oldtimers too, they have stories.

Mayor courts B.C. maritime museumHERITAGE: | Maritime Museum of B.C. looking to relocate and Port Alberni’s mayor says the Island’s deep sea port city would be an ideal fit.

Several coastal communities on Vancouver Island have expressed interest in having the Maritime Museum of B.C. relocate to their municipality, if they can’t find a home in Victoria.

Early this month, the province announced negotiations between the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and the Maritime Museum of B.C. were at an impasse and have asked the

museum to vacate their facility in Bastion Square by Sept. 30.

The decision has sent board members scrambling to come up with a solution to house the more than 35,000-artifact collection. But there may be other options if they can’t find a permanent facility in Victoria.

Campbell River Mayor Andy Adams said they’re “very interested” in the idea of moving the maritime museum up island.

“Of course Campbell

River would be interested,” said Adams, who grew up in Victoria and has been to the museum several times.

“It would be a natural fit with our existing Maritime Heritage Centre where we have a significant number of maritime artifacts and most

notably, the BPC 45, which is the same boat that is on the Canadian $5 bill. We certainly see a natural fit.”

Adams added he hopes to bring the idea to council, but was quick to point out there are a lot of missing pieces of the puzzle that still need to be addressed.

“We would need to know what all is involved, what the square footage is that is required, what’s the plan for operational management and budgets,” he said,

noting that their current maritime museum has nearly max out its current space. “Why would we not be interested?”

Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan also expressed interest in the museum that he said would compliment its local maritime museum.

“It’s about what kind of facility they need and trying to make it fit between us and them and I’m sure somehow we can make it happen if they are seriously interested in moving,”

said Ruttan. He said a number

of facilitates come to mind, including the Glenwood Centre, a building roughly the size of a two gymnasiums and a few schools that are being closed down that will be vacant at the end of the summer, that could potentially house the museum on a temporary basis.

“It’s really a matter of making the museum come here and see what’s available, but we’d certainly be delighted to have them.”

Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay said they would be open to having a conversation with the maritime museum about the possibility of making the short move from Victoria to Nanaimo.

“Any attractions that people want to visit while they’re here in our community, as well as our own citizens that are property established and presented, they create interest in the community,” he said, adding it would compliment the city’s military museum.

The Horse Council of B.C. has the following tips for drivers when approaching horses on the road:

• When passing a horse and rider

on the road, please exercise more caution than you would when passing a pedestrian or cyclist. Due to a horse’s unpredictable nature, they must be given additional distance and attention when passing, so be prepared to stop quickly if necessary.

• Loud or sudden noises can frighten horses: don’t yell or honk, and if you have a loud stereo, please turn it down.

• Never brake or accelerate suddenly, both of which cause noise and may throw up gravel.

• If driving a

particularly noisy vehicle, a motorcycle, or pulling a trailer please exercise extra caution. And please slow down.

Kim would have to monitor everything Arielle consumed as well as any physical activity she participated in, and then calculate how much insulin she’d need to bring her sugar levels to a livable state.

For the first year anywhere from four to nine shots were given a day, and she initially had to monitor her blood glucose levels throughout the night.

Arielle now wears a device that automatically checks every five minutes.

“That’s an extra $350/month just to sleep,” Kim said. “Even with a good medical plan, there

are many extra expenses.”

Another cost has been Arielle’s peer interaction. Once a social butterfly, she now appears to many children as broken and isn’t included.

“She used to be so easygoing,” her mother said.

“She’s more sensitive now. Blood sugar levels influence that. Some kids can be cruel—any sign of weakness and they feed off it. She’s often found in a quiet corner reading alone rather than playing with others.”

Kim can’t drop Arielle off at Brownies, a birthday party or a sleepover like most parents. She now has to remain close by in case something happens. And being available at a moment’s notice has obviously affected her work, making it impossible to run her business.

“I have lots of idle time so she can have as close to a normal and fulfilling life as possible.”

Because Kim is now the primary caregiver to their daughter’s daily needs, Kim’s husband has taken on the role of his wife’s supporter as well as the one to handle the

administrative side of things. “If we need to buy a pump, David’s the one who will find out which one we should get.”

Fundraising has resulted in some tremendous improvements for the people living with type 1 diabetes and their families—the

pump being one of them.

This Sunday Arielle and her family will participate in the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes to raise money for research to better treat, cure and prevent it.

While a bit of a grey cloud hangs over their heads when it comes to their beautiful little girl’s future, the Findlaters are optimistic knowing any improvements

resulting from this research will directly impact her life and the lives of over 300,000 Canadians living with type 1 diabetes. Delivering a practical cure for type 1 diabetes by 2025 is the goal, but with enough help, it could be even sooner than that.

An organization recognizing North America’s most inspiring college staff and instructors honoured three North Island College educators last month.

Sandra Faust, Mickey Bliss, and Albert Balbon each received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award at their annual conference and awards ceremony May 23-26 in Austin, Texas.

The awards recognize faculty, staff, and administrators at Canadian and US technical and community colleges who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to their students, colleagues, and communities.

“It was such an honour to receive this award alongside Mickey and Albert, as well as colleagues from all over North America who are as passionate about education as we are here at NIC,” said Faust, who has taught fundamental English Upgrading courses at NIC for 14 years.

Faust is a go-to faculty member for many NIC

instructors.Her infectious enthusiasm

and passion for learning is obvious from the moment you enter her classroom at NIC, or in the community at Literacy Alberni.

Her classrooms are a home away from home for students, says NIC instructor Mac Newton.

“Sandy is the reason why the fundamental English program thrives at the Port Alberni campus,” said Newton.

“She provides a safe learning environment for some of NIC’s most vulnerable learners. She has a record of continual success; many of her students progress into more advanced levels of upgrading and into other college programs.”

Upgrading courses can be challenging to teach, says NIC’s Adult Basic Education program chair, Caitlin Hartnett, but Faust’s thoughtful and engaging approach encourages faculty and students to succeed.

“We count ourselves lucky to have such an inspiring instructor in our department,” said Hartnett, who says Faust recently became a student herself, upgrading her own ESL teaching skills to meet students’ needs.

Faust received her award with NIC Electrical Foundation certificate and apprenticeship instructor Mickey Bliss and Albert Balbon, the architect of NIC’s award-winning Remote Web-based Science Lab, which allows students around the world to access science labs and curriculum online.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my beloved father who was the most gentle, loving, kind and generous man ever to grace this earth. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.

Predeceased by three wives: Betty, Barbara

John was born into a French-speaking family of twelve in Bodmin, Saskatchewan. John moved to Port Alberni as a young man and started work on the log booms where he worked for many years. John retired to Ladysmith, married Ruth and spent many hours in his gardens, visiting with friends and gathering with family.
