Getting an educ tion at homeHomeschooling means no learning interruptions for McIver family over strike

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Kalyne McIver’s home is filled with a plethora of

sounds: papers rustling, marbles snicking against each other, Lego pieces snapping together and the sounds of children disagreeing over what to do with those Legos. Kalyne regards it all calmly, organizing school supplies, helping her eldest daughter Ehlana, 11, with their reading and getting down on the floor to see just what Alex, 7, and Kiara, 6, are up to.

This is all happening on Tuesday, Sept. 2, a day when most kids should be in school, but aren’t because of the ongoing teacher strike. At Kalyne’s house, however, school is in session right there in her livingroom. She’s in her third year of homeschooling five out of her six children who range in age from four to 11 years, as well as a eight-month-old baby, Nasia, who is a little too young for school.

Initially, Kalyne, a stay at home mom, started homeschooling her children because the family was moving to Port Alberni from Sechelt. With the house on the market and no exact date as to when the sale would be finalized, Kalyne, who herself had moved a lot as a child, didn’t want to put her kids through the discomfort of changing schools mid-year.

That decision proved a solid one when they moved into their house here in Port Alberni on Aug. 29 of last year and Kalyne didn’t have to go through getting the children registered and prepared for school.

‘I was really grateful to not have to just jump into a new school and a new

everything,” she said. “We already had everything set up to start homeschooling again and it worked out really well for us.”

Kalyne runs her homeschooling on a six weeks on, one week off schedule with a longer break in the summer, giving her and her six children plenty of flexibility.

The day to day schedule is fairly locked down however, with school in session from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday, with actual schooling time varying with the age of the child. But however much time each child spends on school work, Kalyne does expect them to get a certain number of projects and assignments done by the end of the day.

Kalyne homeschools

through a distance learning program offered by Heritage Christian Online School, which has a brick-and-mortar campus in Kelowna.

This allows the McIvers to receive funding and have a support teacher, Ryan Titley, based out of Courtenay.

While the learning outcomes for homeschooling are not as set in stone as those for public schools, Kalyne takes direction with public school learning outcomes to make sure she’s not missing anything.

“We do try to align along

with the province in our family, we like that idea, just in case we do at some

point send them back to [public] school.”

“Our eldest, [Ehlana], is very self-motivated, so she just takes her stuff and goes and I’m just here to answer any

questions she has,” Kalyne said. “But she pretty much just takes all of her schooling and does it so I don’t worry too much about that.”

The other children need a little more guidance in their subjects, because unlike some homeschooling families, Kalyne likes to have

each child on their own curriculum.

However, just by dint of being in the same space, the children pick up on what the others are studying.

“They each do their own thing but then they learn little bits of what everyone else is doing at the same time.

“My Grade 4 kid, [Taryn], she has always expressed an interest in marine biology so this year we got her a curriculum that covers ocean animals, quite in-depth, and she’s learning that,” Kalyne said. Marine biology is not part of the usual fourth grade curriculum.

“My eldest just loves to learn so she’ll stop and listen as I read a lesson to this kid or that kid, she’ll just stop and take

it in because she loves to absorb that knowledge,” Kalyne said.

“Everyone just loves to help with projects, we have projects and science experiments always going on.”

While Kalyne talked to a few homeschooling families she knew in order to find the right approach for her own children, she’s learned a lot.

“I tried to listen to all that advice right from the start and to let go of something when it’s not working,” she said. Instead, she opts to look up alternate ideas online.

“It’s such a blessing to be able to look at things online and discuss them,” Kalyne said. “I like to be able discuss with each kid, even the kindergartener, just to say, ‘OK, this is what we’re going to do’ and I want a verbal commitment that they’re going to try their best to do it but then they also know that if it’s really not working, we don’t have to keep doing that and we can find something else.”

Even beyond the education aspect of homeschooling, Kalyne has seen a big change in the attitudes of some of her children.

“Our second daughter, [Taryn,] was exteremely focused on the social aspect of school in a negative way,” she said. Taryn didn’t have a best friend in school and so spent too much of her time worrying about which girls were and weren’t friends with her at different times, to the point that “that was the focus of her existence for two years of school.”

Kalyne does try to make sure her children have a couple of friends outside the home, though being new in town makes it a little harder.

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The 30th Anniversary Port Alberni Toy Run blasts into the Alberni Valley this weekend, bringing thousands of toys for needy children at Christmas, and tens of thousands of dollars for children’s programs throughout the year.

More than a thousand motorcycles of every make, model, size, and colour are expected to gather at Little Qualicum Falls on Saturday, Sept. 13.

After a ceremony to remember fallen riders, the Alberni Black Powder Club will fire their cannon at noon to start

Vancouver Island’s largest motorcycle event. Motorcycles will travel westbound along Highway 4, past Cameron Lake and through Cathedral

Grove into Port Alberni, ending at Glenwood Centre around 1 p.m.

“What makes this Toy Run unique are the thousands

of people who line the route to cheer the riders, holding up signs thanking them for helping the children in the Alberni Valley and west coast communities,” said Port Alberni Toy Run Chairman David Wiwchar.

“Since 1984, the Toy Run has raised more than $1.5 million for local children’s charities, and the people of Port Alberni really appreciate that.”

Once at Glenwood Centre, there are games and events for children and families, as well as events for the thousands of riders who come from throughout B.C., Alberta, and the

Pacific Northwest to attend the popular

annual event.This year features

a couple of twists for the Toy Run: Vince Gladstone met actor and Crystal Head Vodka creator Dan Aykroyd in March, and picked up a commemorative Rolling Stones box from Crystal Vodka to raffle off.

For the first time ever, there will be a second dance on Saturday night of Toy Run weekend: this one a sober dance, to be held at Char’s Landing. Kranky Jack and Cruze Control will provide entertainment at that gig, tickets for which are $20 and available at Glenwood Center on Saturday. Bag checks will be conducted at the door for alcohol.

One of Wayne Coulson’s iconic Martin Mars waterbombers may yet stay in Port Alberni. Stacey Gaiga, who fought to keep the planes here seven years ago, came to city council on Monday, Sept. 8 with two proposals aimed at keeping the recently-retired Hawaii Mars in the city.

The Hawaii Mars could become a static museum display here in Port Alberni as an extension of a museum elsewhere, she said. This way, the city would not have to foot any of the costs.

The second option would be to apply to make the Hawaii Mars a cultural property

option through Heritage Canada, which would involve Coulson donating the plane to the city in return for a tax receipt for the full value of the plane. He would be able to use 100 per cent of that tax receipt within the next five years.

Coulson had said previously that he would be willing to sell the plane to the city for $3 million. While Gaiga hasn’t spoken with Coulson about her specific plan, she said she was hopeful that he would at least consider the proposal.

“I would think that Mr. Coulson would consider a taxable recipt from Revenue Canada,” Gaiga told council, adding that Coulson has expressed a desire to see the plane stay here in Port Alberni but isn’t able to donate it without getting a return on his investestment.

Coulson’s second waterbomber, Philippine Mars, is promised to an Florida aviation museum.

Coun. Cindy Solda expressed hesitation over Coulson not being apprised of Gaiga’s plans and urged Gaiga to meet with him first.

Alberni District Teachers Union (ADTU) president Ken Zydyk secured the support of SD70 trustees Tuesday night in sending a letter to Premier Christy Clark and Minister of Education Peter Fassbender over the continuing strike.

Speaking to the board and more than 50 teachers, parents and students gathered at the meeting, Zydyk said that he was concerned about the state of bargaining between the BCTF and the provincial government after 18 months despite mediator Vince Ready’s involvement.

Zydyk also raised concerns over the government’s E-80 proposal that could overrule the BCTF’s court wins where it was ruled that Bills 28 and 22, which removed the teachers’ ability to negotiate class size and composition, were unconsitutional.

“Government wants us to throw our [constitutional] rights away that were won over a 12-year battle,” Zydyk said, adding that “that’s the major stumblng block to a mediated settlement” and why the BCTF feels the need to go

to binding arbitration as their only option to get students back into classrooms.

“If we could do that, our students would be returning to our school tomorrow but instead the government rejected that.”

Teachers will vote on whether or not they will return to schools while binding arbitration happens, though Zydyk cautioned that this was dependent on the government agreeing

to binding arbitration in the first place.

Referencing letters sent by school districts in Nanaimo and Mission, Zydyk called for the letter to specifically include an appeal for the government to agree to binding arbitration by a third party.

Trustee John Bennie expressed concerns about supporting the ADTU’s request for binding arbitration, saying that while he wants there to be a solution, he’s “not

agreeing to commit to binding arbitration” until the board had time to discuss the matter further.

However, trustee Rosemarie Buchanan did put forward a motion to include an appeal for binding arbitration that was passed by the board of trustees.

Board Chair Larry Ransom said that the letter would be sent out within the next couple of days.

Zydyk said that he was happy with the board’s decision and that he believes that SD70 teachers will vote to return to school if the province does agree to binding [email protected]

The city will investigate the reasons behind two recent coolant leaks at Tyler’s No Frills on Johnston Road.

Coun. Cindy Solda expressed concern over the health effects of leaked coolant.

“I would like to know how dangerous it is for our community,” she said.

The first coolant leak occurred at 3:42 p.m. on Aug. 26 and the second on Sept. 6 at 3:47 p.m. The Port Alberni Fire Department responded to both leaks and evacuated the store. The leaks likely happened

due to a mechanical failure in the store’s refrigeration compression system, said fire Chief Tim Pley. In both cases, the PAFD contained the leak and handed control of the store back to No Frill’s staff within a few hours, with the store opening the following morning.

However, the second leak caused such a high concentration of coolant that the firefighters had trouble getting inside, leading to BC Hydro having to cut power to the building.

City manager Ken Watson told council that a report would be drawn up. Calls to No Frills’ corporate office were not returned.

The 69th annual Alberni District Fall Fair went off without a hitch this past weekend, with attendance bolstered by the food donation admission during the first hour of the fair on Thursday, Sept. 4.

According to Ann Sidall, office administrator for the Fall Fair, 1,975 lbs of food were collected.

“We got 1,000 people through the gate within the first hour,” Sidall said, making the food donations a huge success for the Salvation Army.

Attendance was higher than usual on Thursday, with 6,508 people coming in. The rest of the weekends attendance was about on par with other years even with the record breaking heat on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Fortunately, there were plenty of vendors selling cold drinks to keep fair goers well hydrated, including Mary Folley, who came up from Victoria to work at the Lemonade

heave booth. According to her, the high attendance on Thursday was the “shock of the weekend,” with the stand seeing more customers on Thursday than they did any other day.

The high attendance also contributed to the large amount of money raised by the Fall Fair Association. After expenses, all of the money raised by the association will go into next year’s fair.

This was Scott Green’s, Chairman of the Fall Fair Association, 35th fair.

“It’s been a good 35 years for me, Ive enjoyed it, met a lot of people,” he said, adding that he’ll be back next year. “It’s in the blood. I’ll be 90 years old and I’ll be up here.”

The Kinette booth was also a success,

“It was a good weekend,” said Barb Kalugin, president of the Port Alberni

Kinette Club. “We had good people in here, it went really well.”

The Kinettes make their entire budget for the year at the Fall Fair. They get volunteers from the groups they support to come out and help out at the food booth and in return, the Kinettes donate to those groups. The rest of the money is divided up between everything else that the Kinettes do in the community.

V ICTORIA – The B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s latest

demand, for binding arbitration on selected pocketbook issues of its members, is going nowhere.

This follows months of the union’s insistence on mediation. First a B.C. Supreme Court judge met with both sides and walked away. Then the BCTF’s preferred choice, Vince Ready, agreed that mediation won’t fix the current version of the mess he last examined in 2007.

BCTF president Jim Iker announced the arbitration gambit on Friday, in one of the webcasts he uses to rally the union’s exhausted membership. Education Minister Peter Fassbender replied that with five minutes’ notice to the government’s chief negotiator and lacking specifics on what would

be subject to arbitration, the proposal would forfeit the government’s mandate to control costs.

“This government will not raise taxes in order to provide a settlement to one union that does not reflect what the other public sector has done,” Fassbender said.

In short, there will be a negotiated settlement, eventually. The union chose to begin the strike, and now must find a way to end it.

The government’s position in this dispute is unlike any of the many that preceded it. And it points the way to an evolution of education that cannot be stopped.

The announcement of a $40-a-day payment for days lost during a fall strike for children under 13 was greeted with scorn by the BCTF and its echo chambers. Parents won’t be bribed, they want school, not daycare, it’s an insult, went the refrain.

Before the first week

of the fall strike was over, nearly two thirds of eligible parents had enrolled, faced with pickets at their schools and real and mounting child care and tutoring costs. The union executive, collecting their hefty salaries while teachers do without even token strike pay, said

members who are parents should refuse the money.

Some B.C. teachers have begun advertising tutoring services

online. With distance learning and other online education options expanding in all 60 public school districts, the digital revolution is unfolding quickly.

The B.C. government made a couple of announcements in April, one about moving to digital versions of textbooks and another about a digital merger of 1,600 school libraries with public and post-secondary schools. Growth of options

accelerates.Largely drowned out by

the noise of 1970s-style industrial labour strife, the B.C. public school curriculum is being refashioned for this new age. Among its goals is to “allow teachers and students the flexibility to personalize their learning experience to better meet each student’s individual strengths and needs.”

One of B.C.’s early models for self-directed learning is Thomas Haney secondary in Maple Ridge, where senior high students are expected to make their own way through course work, learning to manage their own time.

It was here that the first couple of Grade 12 students showed up last week to begin making up for lost time from the strike that set in last spring. Self-directed study has become a crash course. Private schools are also swamped with applications from Grade 12 students looking for particular courses they will need by next year.

EDITORIAL

Keep eyeson the road

Distracted driving has received a lot of attention in recent years with the advent of anti-cellphone legislation.

But, as an incident last week in Cowichan clearly demonstrated, there is a lot more than a buzzing smartphone to worry about.

For those who missed it, four people were sent to hospital — one in critical condition — when a car tumbled down an embankment.

The cause?According to police, the driver became

distracted when her iced cappucino spilled and she went off the road while dealing with the mess.

How many of us can honestly say we’ve never never sipped on a warm or cold beverage as we commuted from point A to point B?

It’s not the drink’s fault and we’re not necessarily advocating you lay off the double-doubles while on the road.

It’s the driver’s fault for allowing their attention to be diverted from the road by anything at all: an offensive comment on a radio talk show; squabbling kids in the back seat; changing the song on your iPod; the pickles on your hamburger; bad or dangerous drivers; cute pedestrians, and a whole slew of other potential distractions.

When a distraction does arise, please play it safe — pull over.

Ever wonder why many of us Christians are shy to share about Jesus? We often share with a whisper while people with other beliefs and theories shout it from the mountain tops. We need to be reminded who has power in this universe who will be victorious. As Billy Graham said, “I read the last chapter of the book – and we win”. Jesus said “All power is given to Me in heaven and earth”. He defeated Satan at the beginning, He defeated him at the cross, and will defeat him for good at the end. In the words of the song “He is the all time und isputed, undefeated champion of love”. He is on our side and it is to Him that we bear witness.

Mailbag: Feedback on public education

Education must stay public

To the Editor,I wonder when the

Honourable Christy Clark and BC Liberal Government finally realize the importance of public education. After many years living in British Columbia I see a slow detoriation of public education. This needs to stop.

In 1982 I left Czechoslovakia after many years of struggling to bring in a government that would honour the desire of people for a political system that would be based on basic democratic principles that would applied to all people. When I came to Canada as a stateless personnel I thought that my struggle for a better political system would end. I believed that the Western democracy is the extension of people democratic will.

I attended various Canadian universities and was able to study

subjects I was unable to study in my home country. I acquired a Bachelor of Education and two Master degrees. I became a teacher and in 2001 moved to British Columbia.

Being a teacher, I saw my role as a promoter of democracy, social justice and free education for all.

I believe that the role of the teacher is to spark in our students the desire to be the future leaders and promoters of democracy, social justice and a political system that is open to all and that promotes the ideal of human society.

Now when comparing both systems, the one I lived before and the one I live in now, I see some similarities between both. Mainly the struggle of both political systems to control the teachers’ independence and professionalism and the public education.

I strongly believe

that we need a free, independent public education for all, because only this kind of education will give all students the opportunity to grow to become new political leaders, community leaders, social justice activists and valuable members of our global society.

Richard Pesik,Port Alberni

What’s best solution?

To the Editor,Some teachers

comments are now saying that a simple solution to the government for approval of their five-year contract, eight per cent wage increase, and $5000 signing bonus is to raise the PST.

I ask these university graduates, “so called teachers”, then why did the B.C. taxpayers get rid of the HST? Mickey Mouse, big time.

Joe Sawchuk,Duncan

Raise taxes, go back to school

To the Editor,Despite thousands

of tweets, e-mails, and letters and endless chatter, nobody gets it—the province doesn’t have any extra money to settle the teachers’ strike.

Compulsory arbitration has been rejected and an essential service designation would be disastrous.

The answer to ending the strike is simple. Raising personal income taxes by up to a maximum of three percent, plus possible modest increases to corporate taxes would give the government the needed additional funds to settle the strike.

The BCTF, of course, won’t suggest such a course of action. But will the public write the premier and the minister of education suggesting that personal income taxes be raised or are they content to see the

government starve the teachers into submission?

The time for meaningless pleas and complaining is over.

Richard Berg,Port Alberni

How sad to be losing teachers

To the Editor,On the news this

week, one young teacher stated she’s looking into changing professions and seeking application foralternate education.

That means that teachers find their employer so intolerable, they are being driven away from the profession.

How sad to lose that youthful zeal and dedication to our children, besides considering the enormous expense (probably still being paid off!) to achieve a teaching degree.

And begs the question: what does government plan to replace teachers with?

Liz Stonard,Port Alberni

Alberni Valley News Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 www.albernivalleynews.com A11

From / A10In the short term,

Fassbender says the lost strike days will likely have to be restored to the school schedule.

“Do you put it on at the end of the year?

Do you take it out of spring break?

Do you take it out of Christmas holidays?

My staff are looking at all of the options,” Fassbender said.

In the longer term, the whole factory model of school is on the way out.

No to TrudeauTo the Editor,Where do the federal

Liberals come up with these wanting egocentric novelties? They aren’t making the same mistake they made with Stephane Dion or Michael Ignatieff, no way, this time they have a pretty boy, shiny pony Justin Trudeau.

Just what we need, a federal carbon-tax and government revenue marijuana for our youth.

This is the policy direction Trudeau is campaigning to take Canada if his P.M. dreams come true. You can’t make this stuff up.

He says he admires

China more than other countries “because of their basic dictatorship”.

Remember Stephane Dion’s 2008 ‘Green Shift’?, well Trudeau is resurrecting it in his own image this time called “carbon pricing”.

It tells us everything that Trudeau selects a radical environmental extremist in Gerald Butts as his principal advisor. Butts is an ex CEO of World Wildlife Fund Canada which is anti progress of anything developed by man except their bankrupt ideas of ‘green’.

Safety Tip:Focus on the road, not your phone. Taking your eyes off the road to check that text signifi cantly reduces your reaction time–and can have deadly consequences. In fact, distracted driving is now the

second leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C.

Question of the WeekDriveway introduces our new northern B.C. based writer Mike Zacharias today. He challenges the image of the truck being the northern choice by testing a Ford Fiesta. What would you like Mike to test in the Prince George area?

City commuter handles the northern roadsSubcompact cars are set up to be basic transpor-tation with emphasis placed on low cost and great fuel economy. That said, you might think they are all a bit boring and not very fun to drive or even very interesting to look at. This is not the case on the 2014 Ford Fiesta: it has had a face-lift and features more standard options than in the last model year. Usually little sub-com-pacts like this come with more plastic than a TV sports reader. The Fiesta feels different. You do get some plastic to be sure but the dash has softer materials and some of the plastic around here actually looks and feels good. For the price ($19,990 as tested), driving the Fiesta feels a bit naughty, as if maybe you have stolen a more expensive car than you can actually afford. I would love to be able to afford an Aston Martin as my daily commuter car but at this point in my life that is not an option. With the redesign, you do get the Fusion / Aston front-end styling. Now some people might say, “Well it looks too much like an Aston.” Really? That’s like someone telling a girlfriend that she looks too much like Scarlett Johansson; you’re not really going to complain, are you?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it drives or feels like an Aston but it is great fun to drive, handles our roads very well and all the tech options needed to keep your eyes on the road are available. The SE model I drove came with Bluetooth, satellite radio, navigation, power locks, windows, and the My Ford Sync.I drove the Fiesta around Prince George and practicality wise it didn’t skip a beat. As I live downtown, anywhere I go in my daily life I am always driving right through the heart of the city. When I headed out

to the hockey rink, I was able to put all of my goalie equipment into the back, no problem. Parking in cities is increas-ingly becoming a premium. Parking a sub-compact like the Fiesta was a breeze even without a backup camera! As some people with larger vehicles will know, parking at places like malls in and around the city the spaces are tight with not a lot of movement space for bigger vehicles. In addition, of course, it does get worse in wintertime when the snow is piled high. With that in mind, how will it handle our winter roads? The Fiesta has good ground clearance for a smaller car and handling our

winter roads should not be a problem. Of course, you would want to invest in a good set of winter tires.Beyond the city limits, out on the highway, heading south it handled the road well, with enough get up and go for good passing power when needed. It’s quite roomy for a small car. There’s room for three in the back seat as long as those passengers are not of a larger body type, if I may delicately put it that way. If you are of a larger body type, there is plenty of room in the trunk, if you desperately need a ride at that exact moment. (Just kidding.) But it does tell you the trunk is also roomy! Verdict: No complaints. For a sub-com-pact, you get great tech options, great fuel economy, in a car that doesn’t feel like you are driving something as inexpensive as it is. It’s fun and zippy for driving around town or highway driving. If you need a small car as a

daily commuter or it’s your second car to accommodate a bigger SUV or truck, I would recommend taking one out for a test drive to see if it fits for you in what you are looking for in a car. The Fiesta right now for me is tops in the subcompact class.View our Ford Fiesta video review online at DrivewayCanada.ca

Jamie Amos of Port Alberni spends the hockey season as

the assistant equipment manager with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ major junior hockey team. In the summer, though, he can often be found walking around the track at Bob Dailey Stadium—training for the annual September Terry Fox Run.

The Port Alberni run takes place this Sunday, Sept. 14 at Kitsuksis Dike.

A breakfast provided by the Kiwanis club kicks off festivities from 8:30–10:30 a.m. Free registration starts at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m.

Participants may walk, jog, run, rollerblade , push a stroller, etc. on two- or five-kilometre

routes around the dike or a 10-km road course.

The Alberni Valley Lions Club is hosting the event this year and welcomes volunteers.

Amos has been raising money for the Terry Fox Run in Port Alberni since 2006, and surpassed the cumulative $10,000 mark on Fall Fair weekend. His motivation is the man himself, the late Terry Fox.

“I met Terry Fox on Aug. 18, 1980 in Wawa, Ont.,” Amos said. “We were coming back from New Brunswick, me and

my Mom and Dad. I was only 12 at the time.”

Less than 500 kilometres later, in Thunder Bay, Ont., Fox’s Marathon of Hope ended when doctors told him his bone cancer had returned. Fox died on June 28, 1981.

Meeting Fox made a lasting impression on Amos, who on Sunday will run/walk the two-kilometre course that starts at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293 building on Kitsuksis Dike.

In the past, Bulldogs’

players have joined him on the route; they also support him through donations.

Each year, Amos sets a goal of $1,000 to raise for the Terry Fox Run. This year he had well surpassed that total a week before the event. In 2013 he raised a personal record, $3,692.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Amos can find him at the Alberni Valley Multiplex or at the beginning of the walk.

“We try to meet people, other homeschoolers and get together with them,” she said, though Kalyne likes having less interaction than an entire classroom of other children who might not all necessarily be the best influence.

That was just one of the reasons the McIvers decided to homeschool.

“Because we’re through a Christian school we’re able to teach our faith as part of our curriculum and that’s a really important thing for us.”

They’ve also remained happy with the funding and teacher support they receive.

Titley visits a couple of times a year and Kalyne reports to him through Facebook.

“I make Facebook photo albums of all our homeschooling so he can see what we’re up to at anytime.”

The McIvers made the decision to homeschool as a family and while Kalyne’s husband Andrew’s work as an independent contractor takes him to Qualicum Beach three days a week, he always tries to help out with the homeschooling when he is home.

“He’s as hands on as he possibly can be. He loves it just as much as we do and he’s very supportive.”[email protected]

▾ MYTH: Once kids join a gang there’s no hope for them: Reality: With quick family,

school, and police intervention, a youth can leave the

gang without any serious consequences.

The key is a coordinated and collaborative

intervention as soon as some of the warning

signs appear. Better yet, everyone needs to

work together to prevent youth and young

adults from joining gangs.

Healthy Harvest is one of eight farms included in this year’s self-guided tour, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The map is available online at www.acrd.bc.ca, or at the ACRD office, Echo Centre and the visitors’ centre. Canada Post wants your food—anything spare you might have to donate to its second annual food drive.

“We had a great turnout last year,” Canada Post Port Alberni acting superintendent Lisa Aylward said. The local depot raised just under $1,000 in cash and delivered a cube

truck full of food to the Salvation Army.

“We figured doing (a food drive) at this time of year is good; it’s before Christmas and shelves are running low.”

From Sept. 8–12

postal workers have been delivering pink pieces of paper asking people to leave bags of non-perishable items at the end of their property on Saturday, Sept. 13. Canada Post employees will collect the food on Saturday and deliver it to the Salvation Army.

“We’ll be looking for the pink or yellow papers,” Aylward said.

Some homes will receive paper bags donated by Quality Foods for food items.

Donations may also be dropped off at the main post office, 601-3555 Johnston Rd. from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday.

David BrachtBorn 21st July 1954, David Alan Bracht passed away 29th August 2014 at WCGH. Predeceased by parents Enid and Jim Bracht, David is survived by brother Jamie and sisters Susan Walker (Amy, Jesse and Titus Dill); Mary Stanley (Derek, Madeline and George); Kathryn Bracht (Cavan, Lina and Kai Cunningham-Bracht) and extended family.

As a young man, David joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and remained committed to his church throughout his life. After serving a two year mission to Italy, David returned and took up many church positions. Amongst other duties, he held the offices of High Councilman, High Priest Group Assistant and Financial Clerk and actively served his church and community over several decades. His faith was unwavering; it informed all aspects of his life and gave him both strength and peace during his final illness.

For many years, David worked alongside his father and brother at Rayner & Bracht Ltd and in his spare time enjoyed photography, hockey and baseball. In later life he showed a keen interest in music and alternative energy sources, but his great passion was flying. He was a skilled pilot of light airplanes, helicopters and glider planes and until illness prevented him doing so, David enjoyed flying family and friends over the Alberni Valley and West Coast.

The family would like to thank Dr Grant and the palliative care team at WCGH for excellent and considerate care, along with members of David’s congregation for their kind thoughts and prayers.

A service will be held for David on Saturday 13th September, 1 p.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4815 Compton Rd, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 7M5, with refreshments to follow.

Stories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.yatesfuneral.ca

Series to focus on adult literacyFrom / A1 “I have covered

literacy in every newspaper I have worked in and understand its importance to the community.”

A self-proclaimed bookworm, Quinn has supported literacy, starting as a tutor for fellow students in junior high school. She has read to classrooms and incorporates reading and writing skills in her work with youth in Girl Guides.

“I have always loved

reading and writing and for many years I took it for granted,” said Quinn. “I was an adult before I truly understood that there are people who go through life without reading. If I can do one thing to bring to light that literacy is not a given, even in this day and age, then I will do it.”

Quinn has been a community news journalist for more than 25 years, primarily on Vancouver Island. She is also the recipient of

numerous writing and photography awards.

“Susie has built a strong relationship with our readers and is passionate about serving the community,” said Teresa Bird, publisher of the Alberni Valley News. “I am so pleased to see her selected for this grant. The recognition is well deserved and I am confident Susie will write an amazing series of articles that will positively impact literacy in the Alberni Valley.”

InbriefOn a quarter-mile rollNHRA: | Drag racer Dyan Lover finishes second at National Open, heads to Door Warz.

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Alberni Valley drag racer Dyan Lover has had a great year on the quarter-mile this season, including a second-place finish at the NHRA National Open in Mission, the Aug. 25 weekend.

Her first run down the track at the National Open weekend, Lover ran 9.212 seconds at 148.9 miles per hour, the fastest she has ever run with her 1969 Camaro. She kept going up from there.

“I had one of my best weekends ever,” Lover said.

“I barely lost to Brad Powell of Washington State in the final of the open comp class,” she added. She lost by

0.002 of a second.This was not the

first time she has been to the final at the National Open: she did in 2010, the first year she competed in the event, but finished second that year as well.

Lover also advanced three rounds in the pro class before bowing out.

Lover was at the Lordco NHRA B.C.

finals at Mission Raceway last weekend, which drew racers from three provinces and four western United States who race in Division 6.

“We weren’t really competing, we were basically test and tuning. We are running bigger tires on the car—I put 33-inch tires on the car for the first time and I was smoking them,” she said.

She tried out the larger tires because she has a more powerful engine this

year, but ended up putting the 31-inch tires back on and “ran faster than ever,” she said. Lover debuted her new 598-cubic-inch, 900 horsepower engine on the Saturday of Thunder in the Valley at Port Alberni’s regional airport.

On Sept. 20–21, Lover will return to Mission Raceway for DoorWarz, where she lost in the open comp final last year. There were 83 competitors in her class.

She’s hoping to top the class in 2014, as well as achieve another goal. In Grade 10 she said she wanted to build an eight-second street car. She’s hoping to do that at Door Warz.

“If I knock off two-tenths of a second off my time, I can cross that off my bucket list.”

Sounds and stories mix at Char’s Landing

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Adam HIll plays at Char’s Landing on Friday, Sept. 12 from 8-10 p.m.

Singer-songwriter Adam Hill will be bringing his new-timey folk and roots sound to Char’s Landing on Friday, Sept. 12. Ohio-born Hill mixes sounds and stories he’s picked up in all the places he’s lived in, from Tennessee to Wyoming to his home in Vancouver. Whether it’s the Fourth of July he spent dodging firecrackers, the taxidermist he met in Rock Springs or the robbery he witnessed in Winston-Salem, he’s got stories in spades.

But sound is important too and Hill puts himself in a line of traditional music that stretches all the way back to Gus Cannon.

Hill will perform at Char’s Landing at 4815 Argyle St. on Friday, Sept. 12 from 8-10 p.m.

Advanced tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors at Gayle’s Fashions or Rollin.

Jade Alemany’s zucchini racer shoots down the track at the Fall Fair on Saturday, Sept. 6.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

It was a victorious day for Jade Alemany at the Fall Fair Zucchini Races on Saturday, Sept. 6. ALmeany, 10, took home the top prize in her category with her homemade zucchini racer.

Alemany’s racer was customized with an icecream container covered in tinfoil and clothes line spaces. Unlike many of the other racers, her machine made it to the bottom in one piece. This was Alemany’s first time at the Zucchini Races but she enjoyed them.

“It was fun,” she said of the event, which she participated in along with her brother John, 7.

This was the first time that the Zucchini Races had made an appearance at the Fall Fair though they’re not a new event for the island.

Oliver,4, and Drew, 2, Bratt came all the way from Coombs to take part in the event, having previously taken home a prize at the Greater Errington Zucchini Cross Race on Aug. 16, 2014.

The brothers’ father Dean Bratt said that his children had loved the event up at Errington and so they wanted to give it another shot now that they’d honed their skills.

Their zucchini racer was a team effort, with the whole family and friends pitching

in to make the racing machine such a success.

“A friend helped make the axels and wheels,” said Dean.

While turnout for the first time event was lower than expected, organizers hope that by next year they’ll be able to organize a bigger event with more children coming out to take part.
