HEALTHY LIVINGActiveHealth tip: Extra

water and sports drinks can help prevent

dehydration, muscle cramps and getting tired

too quickly.

Keep hydrated during dry season

Port Alberni is one of the hottest valleys on Vancouver

Island, and with the heat comes the real risk of dehydration for those who spend extensive amounts of time outdoors.

With summer just around the corner and many people enjoying the great outdoors for physical activities, hobbies, or for work, it’s important to consider how much and what type of fluids will help maintain hydration for good health.

Water is the best fluid and most people can easily increase the

amount they normally consume over the day to help replace lost fluids in the heat of the dry season.

Drinking at least one to two cups (250 ml to 500 ml) of water up to four hours before exercise and drinking another half to 1.5 cups (125 to 375 ml) of fluid about two hours before playing a sport are some guidelines to follow, especially if you have not produced any urine or if urine is dark yellow (indicating the possible start of a dehydration state).

Some signs that may indicate dehydration, include:

• thirst • dry lips and mouth • flushed skin • headache • dizziness and

fainting • low blood pressure

and increased heart rate

• dark yellow, strong smelling urine

For those people who participate in active sports (for more than 45 minutes)

and either sweat a lot, wear heavy equipment or find themselves in a hot and/or humid environment for extended time periods, extra water and sports drinks can offer a way to prevent dehydration, muscle cramps and getting tired too quickly.

Sports drinks contain sugar and electrolytes, such as potassium and sodium to offer the right balance to replace lost perspiration. Sipping on a sports drink, such as Gatorade, Powerade or homemade orange juice with salt every 10 to 15 minutes will help to offer re-hydration without causing cramps and bloating that could happen with sugary

drinks, such as pop, fruit juice or energy drinks.

Energy drinks that claim to “make you more alert and boost your energy” generally contain caffeine and herbal stimulants that are not considered safe for children or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. These drinks, such as Monster, Redbull, Full Throttle and Amp should not be confused with sports drinks, like Gatorade and Powerade.

Energy drinks containing stimulants, such as caffeine and herbal additives can accelerate dehydration and lead to other side effects.

Fruit juice and fruit beverages (fruit punch, fruit drinks, fruit cocktail) should be kept to a minimum and limited,

since they contain a high level of sugar, which can lead to unwanted weight gain (excess fat storage), elevated triglycerides and fluctuations with blood sugar, if diabetes is a concern.

Even the ‘all natural’ fruit juice offer high levels of sugar and lack other nutrients. These sugary drinks offer very little in the way of nutrition and are loaded with sugar and flavouring.

Carbonated beverages, like pop, Big Gulps and Slurpees are also full of sugar and flavouring. Regular intake of these types of drinks do not fit into a healthy lifestyle.

Keeping hydrated is very important in the heat and helps the body maintain function and optimal physical ability. Going for a run, bike ride,

long hike or playing sports like tennis, hockey, soccer, rugby, basketball, football, or partaking in heavy labour in a hot environment will all be circumstances which increase risk of dehydration.

In addition, being physically active in or above the water for enjoyment of sports such as swimming, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, kiteboarding and windsurfing for long periods (over 45 minutes) may also lead to dehydration, if adequate fluids are not considered.

Plan to bring water to drink, since prevention is key.

One crash is too many

Have you ever driven from one location to

the next and realized once you reached your destination that you didn’t remember getting there? I have. And when I do, it freaks me out.

How is it possible that I could get behind the wheel of a vehicle made up of thousands of pounds of steel and operate it without being completely attentive in every sense of the word? It’s not like I haven’t witnessed the horrific destruction of a car crash and its everlasting aftermath.

You’d think the first tragic one I knew the victims of would have whipped me into shape.

I was 23 years old at the time and had just started a job at a grocery store, where I worked with a beautiful young woman named Lisa Maier, a sweet and helpful cashier. We had attended the same high school—she was a grade older and I looked up to her.

Lisa welcomed me with open arms and told me to ask her anything anytime. “Don’t worry about a thing,” she said, when I told her how nervous I was. “We’re going to have tons of fun. You’ll see.”

Buoyed by her

friendly confidence, I looked forward to working there and getting to know her better, but that never happened because she and her sister Linda, a gorgeous girl one grade younger than me, perished in a head on collision days later.

The horrific car crash rocked the community of Deep Cove in North Vancouver where we grew up, and I was deeply affected by their deaths even though I didn’t know them well.

Just being witness to the devastation their family and friends endured made their story in the news so much more intense.

Warning signs enough? Tofino tsunami sirens will chime once a month

ANDREW BAILEYBLACK PRESS

Break out the bangers and mash Tofino; a monthly taste of Britain is about to shake-up the calendar.

Tofino’s two tsunami sirens will be sounding off once-a-month starting in July but their traditional wail will be replaced by the sound of Winchester Chimes to avoid panic.

During last week’s regular meeting, Tofino’s municipal council officially signed off on the monthly tsunami siren testing that the district’s emergency program executive committee had been

lobbying for.“It’s really important

that locals, especially front line staff, understand what’s going on because then when they get questions from visitors they can answer them,” Mayor Josie Osborne said.

Tofino’s manager of community sustainability Aaron Rodgers suggested theWinchester Chimes test-sound could be supplemented by a pre-recorded voice message and said other sound-options would be investigated.

Rodgers hopes the monthly tests will increase local awareness and, in turn, personal preparedness.

TSUNAMI SYSTEM: | High school students question efficacy of Port Alberni’s tsunami bulletin.

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

“This is a test. Only a test. A test of the tsunami warning system...”

So goes the familiar, monotonous, refrain on the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.

Or at least, so it’s gone until Anne Oswald’s Civic 11 class at ADSS decided to change it.

“It came from a place called Cannon Beach, that was the idea. They’re doing the same sort of thing [audible warning system] but with a cow mooing,” said Liam Clifford, 16. Cannon Beach, Oregon, has the sound of a cow mooing preceding their tsunami test.

“We looked through a billion sounds. We had some dubstep, didgeridoos, animal sounds,” Jen Banfield, 17, said.

The class narrowed down what could work and what wouldn’t.

“We realized that high pitched sounds aren’t going to work so we have to lower our tones,” said Freya Knapp, 16.

“We also had trademark issues: we couldn’t use Disney sounds,” said Clifford.

“We worked along Tim Pley, the fire chief. He’s the one that came to us with the idea,” said Frances Wilson, 17.

It’s not unusual for people in the community to pitch ideas to the Civics 11 class, Oswald said.

“Everyone knows we do stuff like this so different people approach us, send e-mails, see me in the streets and give us project ideas,” said Oswald.

In this case, people

like Pley.“The project’s been

on our mind for a couple of years and the opportunity came up,” said Pley.

“My daughter Regan is in one of Ms. Oswald’s classes. I think my daughter actually said ‘my dad’s got a project for the Civics class.’”

“This sounded really interesting and it was something we’d never heard of,” said Wilson.

Pley and firefighter Brent Rose brought a portable tsunami broadcasting system to ADSS for the class to listen to different warning sounds and decide which they thought would be appropriate.

The class then presented their plan to update the tsunami warning bulletin to city council at the April 27 public meeting.

On May 6, the Civics 11 class went to the Port Alberni Fire Hall—where the tsunami warnings are broadcast live—and several of the students had the opportunity to read out the monthly test message.

Rose and fire

prevention officer Randy Thoen were on hand to assist the students and explain how the system worked.

Prior to purchasing the tsunami warning system in the early 1990s, the plan was to separate Port Alberni into different zones and when a tsunami warning needed to be issued, an emergency responder would drive around and blast instructions from a loudspeaker in their vehicle, Pley said.

The plan with the current four-speaker tsunami version is much the same.

However, 10 years ago when an actual tsunami warning was issued, Pley learned that it wasn’t working as intended.

“We learned that the system doesn’t have the clarity to reach out and give people specific direction and tell them that a wave’s going to be there by a certain time and they should go to this location,” Pley said.

“The best way to use it is to activate it in a pre-recorded siren based mode and so people will hear that and they’ll

either know right away what it means or they’ll look for other information.”

Switching over to a siren-based system that is meant to alert rather than instruct means that people need their own emergency plan.

“People have to have their own personal evacuation plan,” said Pley.

And most people do —when firefighters went door to door a few years ago, 96 per cent of people in the tsunami zone knew they were, could hear the tsunami test and had an evacuation plan set up.

“That’s the new way of doing it. We’ll give you an alert when to activate your plan but your plan is your responsibility.”

To that end, the fire department would like to get to a pre-recorded push button message and get away from the verbal message.

The reason for the sound rather than a message is that the speaker system needs to be challenged, Pley said.

“The test doesn’t challenge the system

the way we would like it to,” said Pley.

“The test should challenge the battery capacity and the ability to broadcast a sound like a siren for a prolonged period of time.”

But he doesn’t want a siren or anything that’s too high pitched.

“The advantage of having the didgeridoo is that it’s challenging, but very different than the siren that will play if there is an actual tsunami warning.”

Banfield agrees.“You want

something that associates with us but nothing that’s going to be misunderstood. You can’t use a train whistle, no bears.

SANDY MCRUER/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

The Somass Estuary is a popular place for birders and hikers alike. If only people could decide on a name.

What’s in a name?ESTUARY: | It’s time to remove confusion over Somass Estuary’s proper name.

The subject of this month’s column is one of

my pet peeves. When I first came

to Port Alberni, 35 years ago, I quickly found the JV Clyne Bird Sanctuary at the mouth of the Somass River and west of town. As a birder, I quickly realized what a wonderful place it is. And I have been out there hundreds of times since then.

At first, there was a lovely sign with two beautifully drawn

Trumpeter Swans on it, announcing that you have reached the entrance to the sanctuary. It was located at the gate to the city sewage lagoon and the then mill effluent lagoon. That was back when Macmillan

Bloedel was the major employer and landowner in the Alberni Valley.

The area was established by the company on their own property to honour JV Clyne, the chairman of the company after its founder HR

McMillan, to protect the then endangered Trumpeter Swans. The province cooperated by establishing a “no hunting” zone south ofthe pipeline that runs across the Somass estuary. Presumably it was also for the safety of those who needed to work there from time to time.

But the area was never established as a federally designated bird sanctuary under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. So the company could quietly abandon the sanctuary without any paperwork or administrative procedures and, in fact, proposed an expansion of the mill effluent lagoon into the former sanctuary in 1990. It did not succeed.

Over the years the sign was neglected and fell into disrepair until it was vandalized and then removed. For many years this property had no official designation until the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association started to get the ball rolling about managing the area as a natural area and protecting it officially from further industrial impacts. That was in the late 1990s.

Stay alert while behind the wheel and you’ll stay aliveFrom / A2

It also made me realize that as young and immortal as we often felt, any of us could die in the blink of an eye.

I drove more attentively after that. I’m not sure how long that lasted, but it definitely wasn’t long enough. There have been so many car accidents since then that have reminded me that our vehicles are potential killing machines and should be thought of in that way every time they’re in operation.

So what can I do personally to stay

focused, alert and defensive while driving? For years my friend Paul Hergott’s been recommending putting our hands at the ten and two position on the

steering wheel.“Some argue that

the nine and three, or the eight and four makes for better positioning,” says the personal injuries lawyer located in West

Kelowna. “What’s optimum for driving is debatable, but what matters to me is that the ten and two position is the least comfortable, requiring conscious attention to keep them there. When my mind wanders, so do my hands, and that movement to a more comfortable position alerts me to refocus my attention on the important task at hand.”

According to Transport Canada more than 165,000 people were injured in car crashes in 2013 —that’s 452 per day.

These numbers seem to drop every year with safer vehicles and mandatory safety laws being implemented, but the numbers are still staggering and unacceptable. Those injured and the families of the 1,923 people who lost their precious lives in just one year would agree.

“Even one crash is too many,” Paul says. “If we could just open our eyes to the immense personal losses in injuries and deaths, those crash statistics would be slashed significantly.”

The RCMP doesn’t

refer to them as car accidents anymore.

“The word accident suggests something couldn’t be helped,” Paul continues. “Virtually all crashes are preventable and are usually caused from someone driving inattentively, recklessly, impaired or falling asleep at the wheel.”

Staying awake has always been a challenge for me when overtired or driving too long, so I’ve learned to pull over and take a nap if tricks like opening the window or playing music don’t keep me

alert.We all know our

strengths and weaknesses when it comes to driving. The key to preventing car crashes, though, seems simply to be paying continuous attention to the road ahead of us. By doing so, we can help keep everyone safe, including ourselves.

◆ BIKE TO WORK WEEK

From / A4Ducks Unlimited

became involved, as well as the city, the regional district, the harbour authority, and MacMillan Bloedel (later Weyerhaeuser). After long and complex negotiations a deal was struck, the land purchased.

Since then the property has been in a funny no-man’s land without an official name.

It is variously called the Somass Estuary Management Plan, or just the Somass Estuary, or the Ducks Unlimited property.

A management plan for the property, and the whole area around it, was created in 2004 and endorsed by all the parties. It can be found on the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District website.

Because of the natural beauty of the area, fact that it is

open to the public and it attracts a lot of wildlife and birds, it has become popular with residents seeking an open sunny area for a stroll.

And for many years it has been promoted by the chamber of commerce visitors’ centre, the regional district and the annual Alberni Valley Visitor Guide. And so it should be: it’s a fabulous place.

But the promotional effort handcuffs itself for several reasons. First, people keep calling the area the JV Clyne Bird Sanctuary. No signs exist that will guide a person to the property or to announce arrival at it. If you want to call it something, call it the Somass Estuary. At least there are two signs for that; one at Victoria Quay and one at the entrance to the property.

Second there are no signs that point the way to the property. And third, at the other two unofficial entrances there are signs saying no trespassing, and do not park in front of the gate.

For many years I have been speaking out about this. I published a column about it back in 2008 in another publication yet the JV Clyne Bird Sanctuary still popped up in this year’s Visitors’ Guide. And JV Clyne is still all over the Internet.

It is time to either go with the flow and re-establish the old name or consistently apply the albeit duller name, the Somass Estuary.

Editor’s note: Sandy McRuer sits on the Somass Estuary Management Committee.

Time to update estuary info in all promotional material
