OUTSIDE GREETERS

Something new has been added to the welcome visitors and members receive at St. Philip. The Nurture Committee is soliciting able-bodied members to step outside and open the door wide for everyone entering on the north and east sides of the sanctuary. Why step outside, you might ask? Isn't it enough to stand inside and if you see someone approaching who might need help, to open the door for them from inside the entryway? Well, the Nurture Committee thinks standing inside the door implies ownership – like you would do at your own residence. In a statement, "Please come into my house." My house. Stepping outside and opening the door says something a little different, doesn't it? In the country, everyone is greeted outside of the house. It implies greater hospitality, doesn't it? In a statement, it is "Welcome Home!" We've all seen the period movies where the household servants amass on the front drive to present themselves to the owners back after their absence. The servants' action demonstrates deference and willingness to be of service. Isn't that the role of Christ? Aren't we to be like him? If our Savior approached, would we race outside, fling open the doors and exclaim, "Welcome Home"? Can we serve our brothers and sisters as we have been served? Questions have also arisen about the number of greeters. Isn't it redundant to have them at the outside doors and the sanctuary doors? Research into this question has revealed that visitors need to be welcomed at least five (yes, five) times when they come into a new environment in order for them to "feel" or perceive themselves welcomed. Well, we could take two approaches to this information. We could say "What's wrong with these people?" Or, we could redouble our efforts to symbolically embrace them. If our goal is to share the joy that Jesus Christ has brought to our lives, we must be willing to try something different. So, let’s try doubling our greeters! Gail Anderson is scheduling volunteers to staff the doors. Please call her or the church office if you are willing to be an "outside" greeter.

Meg Sprenkle has moved to 8515 Boulevard 26 #205, North Richland Hills, Texas 76180-5632. The best phone number to use in contact her is her cell phone number (817-682-0202).

Note of the Week………………

I hope all you fathers had a great Father’s Day. I know Bob, my husband, did because our son took us to the Ranger’s Baseball game against the Astros. (And we got to see a “win.”) Also, we spent the evening in our son’s brand new swimming pool and had a cook out. What a great day—church in the morning, a baseball game, a cookout and swimming! Speaking of our church family, wasn’t it great to hear the Chancel Choir men and men from our congregation sing the anthem on Sunday? They sang “Poor Wayfarin’ Stranger” to perfection! Someone asked me, “How did you get all those men to get up there and sing?” I said, “I told them they could “snap” their fingers.” And they did it very well! Congratulations men! Please get an encore ready for us. This summer our pastor, Greg, will be preaching on the theme of “Jesus.” In carrying out that idea, this Sunday the Chancel Choir will be singing “My Jesus, I Love Thee” arr. by Paul Sjolund. Melanie Demer will accompany the choir on her violin. I’m sure you will recognize the tune, and here are some of the words: My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now. See you in church on Sunday.

Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane

Katie’s Comments

Have you noticed all of the fun going on down in the Fellowship Hall? St. Philip has gone overboard. We are deep in the heart of VBS. We have Percy the Pelican showing Pastor Greg where to go, children have been sorted in dive groups and are visiting various dive sites (including: Underwater Passage Bible Stories, Aquatic Arts, High Tide Hangout Games, Choral Reef Music, and the French Mission Cruise). We have 41 volunteers working in all areas of our program.

Children will be learning various Bible Stories (Noah Depends on God, A Servant Girl Dares to Care, John [the Baptist] Proclaims Jesus, The Disciples Choose to Follow Jesus), playing games, learning new songs, making Arts & Crafts projects, learning French, and having a great time as we dive deeper with God.

Thank you to everyone who helped to get ready, has been an onsite volunteer, and who has prayed for our VBS program. It has been a lot of fun to hang out at the various dive sites with all of my friends!

Dare to go Deep! Katie

Thank you to Pat Collins who has served as volunteer coordinator since 2010.

Pat has given a great deal of time and energy during these busy years in the life of the church.

We can’t thank her enough for her cheerful, dedicated, and competent service to this congregation.

Pat has decided to resign this position effective immediately.

We are very grateful to Paula Overton who has agreed to step into this position. If you are interested in volunteering in the church office, please call Paula or Mitzi. Please contact Paula in any matters regarding your volunteer schedule, (late, cancel, reschedule, etc…)

On the 4th Sunday night of every month, St. Philip provides a contemporary worship serviced called the “Footprints” service. This month’s Footprints service is on June 24 and will be focused on inclusion, specifically the Bible passage about Jesus welcoming little children. Our Footprints committee thought it would be fitting to welcome the children’s choir to sing with the worship band on the closing hymn of that service! We will be singing “Bring Forth the Kingdom”. If your children are interested, they will need to meet in the Fellowship Hall at 6:15 PM on June 24 to run through the song prior to the 6:45 PM service. The service should last about an hour and the kids will sing on the last song.

Please RSVP if your child is interested. Thanks, Paul Demer Footprints Committee Chair 817-637-2191
