Pentecost Offering Sunday, May 19th
The proceeds from this annual offering are used to meet the needs of at-risk children. This year the Mission Outreach committee has designated the HEB PTA Clothes Closet to receive 40% of the total offering. The Closet works with school counselors and nurses to provide (gently used) donated clothing and school supply items for students in need. Your generous donations will allow for items which must be purchased: shoes, etc.
The balance of the Offering (60%) provides leadership opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised more than $8 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God’s family.
Blessings, Mission Outreach
From the Pastor: On Sunday May 19 we will celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost is a festival that is recorded in both the New and Old Testament. Every male Jew was required to worship at the Temple on this day. The festival is also the “Feast of Weeks” because it occurred seven weeks after the opening of the harvest season. For the Church, we celebrate Pentecost not because it relates to the harvest season but because it is on this day that God sent the Spirit to the first disciples. The liturgical color for the day of Pentecost is red, symbolizing the fire of the Spirit. Let’s celebrate the day by wearing red on Sunday. Please prepare yourself also to celebrate the Lord’s Supper too. Also, on Sunday May 19, there will be a town hall meeting after the 11:00 am worship service. This town hall meeting if for me to discuss with the congregation the direction I see St. Philip headed in ministry and mission and to answer questions that church members and friends might have regarding our ministry. AND – I hope you’re planning on attending the All Church Potluck on June 2nd at 5:30 pm. There will be special music and time to gather for fellowship and good food. One other piece of information that I want you know is that the Session approved that we have only one worship service during the month of July. This service will take place at 10:00 am and will give us an opportunity to gather all together for worship. The chancel choir takes off the month of July and we can enjoy special music during this month. Peace be with you, Greg

Clean out the desk drawer, glove compartment, closet or kitchen hiding place and round up
those old cell phones. They are useless to most people now, but they are worth money to the St. Philip Youth.

Note of the Week……………… To all you ladies, I hope your Mother’s Day was a great one! I had a great time with family members and lots of food! And speaking of family…..next Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, my granddaughter
is going to be confirmed into the FUMC of Hurst! She, Abby Cochrane, has been attending confirmation classes for about nine months every Sunday evening from 6-8:00. That is a great commitment of time and energy that she and her parents have made, and Abby has committed her life to Christ to follow in his footsteps. I am so grateful that she has God in her life to guide her through thick and thin! We see so many young people totally lost in this world, and I am ever thankful to her parents for bringing her to church every Sunday since she was born! So, next Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, I will be in the 8:30 service, but I will not be in the 11:00 worship service. I will be attending Abby’s confirmation service at Hurst Methodist Church down the street. Jennifer Stark has graciously agreed to direct the Chancel Choir, and they will be singing an arrangement of that well known hymn—“Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart” by Lloyd Larson. Some of the words are: Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth, through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, and make me love Thee as I ought to love. Don’t forget to wear red this Sunday!
See some of you in church on Sunday. Joyfully Singing in Christ,
Pam Cochrane
Thank You!

Notes from Elizabeth – Recently I had a hard time finding the book of Ruth in the Old Testament. I went home and told my husband and he reminded me of an interesting fact about the book of Ruth. In the Jewish Bible it is part of the section known as the Writings, or Ketuvim. In the Christian Bible the very same book is considered history and is nestled within the histories of Judges and 1 Samuel. What is more, in different translations of the Christian Scriptures, from different eras in Christian history, the book is in different parts of the Bible. The question “Where is Ruth?” can be a complicated one to answer! The sermon “Lydia’s Encouragement,” which I preached on May 5, was based on the story “Lydia” by Barbara McBride-Smith, published in “The Story Teller’s Companion to the Bible, Volume 13 – New Testament Women.” This commentary series was published in the 1990s and covers each book of the Bible, providing exegesis and then fictionalized accounts for various characters throughout Scripture. It is a fascinating and fun way to learn more about the Bible! You can borrow volumes from this series out of my library anytime. Finally, a quote from the great book “Becoming Barnabas: The Ministry of Encouragement,” which is the highlight of the last Wednesday night book study (it ended May 15th). “Over and over again in Scripture, we are reminded that ministry is not to be a solitary activity” (p. 74). Thanks be to God for this author’s encouragement to allow the Spirit to lead all of us in ministry together!

Phone Check –Up
Deacon ministry, formed in August, 2011, established
“PHONE CHECK-UP”
which involves daily phone calls to our church members living alone. The idea is to confirm that “all is well” and to also let them know someone is thinking of them.
This is an important part of the Deacon ministry, and if you
would either like a call, or be willing to help with calls,
please contact Bonnie Brockway, 817.498.9657, or Edith
Vaughn, 817.282.6823.
Thank you for all of your payers and concerns during last weeks surgery and hospital stay. Knowing that you had me covered in prayer made my recovery so much better. I appreciate the calls, visits and cards so much. And thanks to the folk who stayed with Robert during the procedure. You gave him a calming presence to hold on to. Our St. Philip family is truly awesome! Cecile and Robert Lemmon
To the St. Philip Presbyterian Family,
Thank you for your love for our daughter Karen Ann Wied, who grew up in our church, and passed
away in March. The concerns, prayers, calls, cards and memorials in her name are most ap-
preciated. Karen would be pleased. Your love and caring at this sad and difficult time has
helped with our sorrow.
Bobby Wied and Family
Thank you for my College Care Package! It means a lot that you still send them to me, even
though I go to college close to home. I am very thankful for my St. Philip Family!
