SO WHO ARE WE?
We are different families, different cultures, different races, living side by side.
We are bold, ambitious people. People who like to reach out, people who want to connect.
We are the grace and grandeur of our heritage.
A sweep of stone and steel. We are the splendour of our jacarandas, so magnificent
against the sky. We are the heartbeat of our city, captured and celebrated in
clean lines, bold shapes and vibrant colours.
WE ARE RAPID.WE ARE EFFICIENT.
WE ARE THE FUTURE.1
BOOK 2.idml 2 2015/01/30 4:36 PM
A Re Yeng bus shelters are located along the trunk and feeder routes. Passengers can also embark and disembark from the roadside kerb.
Passengers will ride along the trunk and feeder routes in a fleet of 30 A Re Yeng rigid buses. Passengers will embark and disembark from the bus station, bus shelter and pole bus stop.
A Re Yeng feeder stops are easily identified by the pole stops, which are positioned along the bus feeder routes. Here passengers can embark and disembark from the roadside kerb.

The A Re Yeng system will be completed and become operational in phases.
The first phase will extend from Kopanong in Soshanguve, via Rainbow Junction and the CBD, to
Menlyn (with a branch to Hatfield) and ending in Mahube Valley, Mamelodi. The first phase of
A Re Yeng operations will be the inception phase, which entails the construction of a trunk of about
7 km from the corner of Nana Sita Street and Paul Kruger Street in the Pretoria CBD, to Hatfield via
Sunnyside, and connects to the Gautrain Station in Hatfield. The route has seven median stations –
two in the CBD, three in Sunnyside, one at Loftus Stadium, one in Hatfield and two kerbside stops.
This phase commenced in 2014.

FUTURE A RE YENG ROUTES
6
BOOK 2.idml 7 2015/01/30 4:36 PM
The backbone of A Re Yeng services will comprise buses operating in dedicated trunk route lanes in most areas. The trunk routes will give priority to the buses and ensure that they provide a quality service to users. To improve the bus service, visible infrastructure is provided which motorists and pedestrians need to be aware of:
TRAFFIC SIGNAL INFORMATION
7
BOOK 2.idml 8 2015/01/30 4:36 PM
Bus lanes are marked with red paint on a black asphalt road. There are yellow road studs separating the busways from normal traffic.
Trunk route intersections are controlled by traffic signals with bus displays; these relate specifically to A Re Yeng buses. When the bus display is green, only buses are allowed to move. Motorists must pay careful attention, as in some cases they may not be allowed to turn right when the bus has priority at an intersection.

When the red disk under the white arrow is red, vehicles intending to turn right must wait (image 3).
The traffic signal system will give priority to buses in some cases in order to ensure that they adhere to their timetable. Motorists should therefore note that traffic signal phases may change suddenly and will not always run in the same sequence, and therefore they have to pay attention at all times to the applicable signal displayed.
Vehicles turning right must therefore always observe and adhere to the signal display under the white arrow.

There are three green lights at trunk route intersections: The green disk is for straight-driving and left-turning vehicles (image 1). The green bus is for buses only (image 2). The green arrow is for right-turning vehicles (image 3).
When the red bus is shown (image 4) and the green arrow starts flashing (image 3), straight-driving vehicles (image 1) and vehicles turning right can go.

BOOK 2.idml 11 2015/01/30 4:36 PM
An important aspect of the A Re Yeng system is the provision of high-quality transport to passengers arriving on foot or by bicycle. Sidewalks and cycle facilities are to be provided over the entire length of the A Re Yeng service.
THESE FACILITIES ARE:
• Convenient• Accessible• Safe• Comfortable• Attractive
In addition to NMT facilities along each trunk line, pedestrian facilities within a 500 m radius of the trunk line stations and cyclist facilities within a 2 000 m radius of these stations are to be provided or upgraded. Universal access will be the key parameter in the design of NMT facilities associated with A Re Yeng. All facilities will be continuous and eliminate barriers to mobility-impaired people and disabled people with disabilities.
NON-MOTORISED TRANSPORT (NMT)

BOOK 2.idml 12 2015/01/30 4:36 PM
The A Re Yeng rapid transit system is designed, constructed and operated with universal accessibility as a core value.
Universal access refers to an environment that can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size or disability.
The A Re Yeng concept does not just capture the provision of physical infrastructure such as access ramps and bridges, but addresses every aspect of the journey such as:
Planning a trip Getting to a boarding point Getting into a bus or station Making the journey Getting out of a bus or station Getting to a destination Giving feedback
DEFINED USER GROUPS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
Children, Senior citizens and elderly people, people with permanent physical limitations, people with temporary physical impairments, pregnant women, infirm people, those requiring pram access, and those requiring luggage access are all accommodated.
UNIVERSAL ACCESS

BOOK 2.idml 25 2015/01/30 4:37 PM
1. What is A Re Yeng?
A Re Yeng is a high-quality, affordable, safe and convenient rapid transit public bus service. It is easily distinguishable from the current City of Tshwane bus services and conforms to national policy on public transport.
2. Why a bus rapid transit service?
Frustration over worsening traffic conditions is a problem in metropolitan areas worldwide. Several countries that have embraced bus rapid transit (BRT) to improve their public transport have found that their traffic problems have been significantly reduced.
The City of Tshwane recognises that traffic congestion has become a major problem for vehicle drivers, particularly during peak hours. At the same time, residents of less affluent areas depend on affordable public transport to get to work or school. By implementing a cost-effective and efficient public transport system, road safety will improve and congestion will reduce, while residents’ mobility will increase. The City of Tshwane also expects the number of road accidents to decrease, as people will be less likely to rely on private vehicles for transportation.
3. Why A Re Yeng and not other modes of transport?
A Re Yeng will help reduce congestion on Tshwane’s roads and the associated air pollution. The implementation of A Re Yeng is seen as an economic development project with short, medium and long-term impacts and benefits. The system and the accessibility it brings will go a long way towards physically and mentally integrating Tshwane and improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. Reliable public transport will also result in more flexible employment and transport arrangements, which are currently often constrained by the existing bus and taxi systems.
Frequently asked questions about A Re Yeng
25
BOOK 2.idml 26 2015/01/30 4:37 PM
26
Considering that traffic volumes are escalating by 7% per year in the economically active corridor between Johannesburg and Tshwane, carbon dioxide emissions from private cars will increasingly contribute to global warming. The use of A Re Yeng will therefore help bring about a cleaner city with reduced carbon dioxide levels. The buses of the A Re Yeng service will comply with Euro 5 emission specifications. Compressed natural gas (CNG) buses will be introduced to the fleet in due course.
4. Public transport has a poor reputation among bus users. How will A Re Yeng be different?
The existing public transport, too frequently, is overcrowded and unsafe with excessive journey times. This has led to an increased reliance on private cars for transport, with inadequate pedestrian and cyclist facilities. A Re Yeng will transform existing public transport by reducing road congestion as well as urban pollution, creating a cleaner and more pleasant city for all. 5. How will A Re Yeng operate/work?
Using A Re Yeng, visitors will be able to move with ease through the city from 06:00 until 20:25, with trunk services every 7 minutes in peak time and every 10 minutes in off-peak time during the week.
On Saturdays the service operates from 06:00 until 23:40, with 10-minute frequencies during peak hours and 20-minute frequencies during off-peak hours. Sunday services operate from 06:00 to 20:00 at 30-minute intervals.
Feeder services are integrated with the trunk services, with weekday frequencies of 7 to 10 minutes during peak hours and 10 to 20 minutes during off-peak hours.
