Note of the Week………………

Well, as I suspected, I heard that the Praise Band and youth provided wonderful leadership for Youth Sunday while I was on vacation! They received well-deserved praise from many of you and even a donation from a member for future endeavors! Thank you to Mike Ellis and Katie Burgoon for their coordinated plans and efforts and to all the participants. Due to graduations and no youth interested in playing the guitar, Praise Band will officially be disbanded. However, for special occasions such as Youth Sunday, Easter and Footprints, the group will get together and combine with adults to lead us in these vital Sundays of our church year. The music department is going to start a youth chime choir scheduled to meet in the Praise Band’s spot on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. starting in the fall. (The church owns 5 octaves of choir chimes that we have only occasionally used!) We need ten good youth-volunteers for this group. (A chime looks like a metal bar with a mallet connected to it.) The chimes are played like the hand bells with a more mellow sound like our marimba. Please see me if you are a youth (12-18) and interested in joining. This Sunday Laura Gatch is singing “My Life Flows on in Endless Song” by Shafferman. The Chancel Choir is singing “Alleluia” by Manuel. See you in church on Sunday.

Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane

Katie’s Comments

During the Time for Young Christians on Sunday, one child said, “I know what your mom likes. She likes you!” I thought it was sweet at the time, but the more I think about it, it’s true. My mom does like me. All the time. Okay, well may not ALL the time, because I AM human. I do make mistakes. But my mom loves me ALL THE TIME, even when I don’t think that I deserve it. Isn’t that the great thing about moms? They are cheerleaders, confidants, and friends. Moms always know just what to do to help cheer you up after a bad day. As I’ve been thinking about Mother’s Day and all of the wonderful things that we can do to celebrate moms, I realize how truly blessed I am. I have been blessed with a fantastic mother, who has taught me so much. I also have been blessed with countless women in my life who have served in the role of mother at various times in my life. I am truly blessed. To the women who held my hand, shared my laughter and my tears, and who helped me grow into the woman I am today, I am forever grateful. Grace and Peace, Katie

A volunteer is being sought to prepare a special PowerPoint program for the announcements

displayed on the TV in the entryway of the church.

If you are interested in helping with this computer run presentation, please contact Rev. Garis at

[email protected] or call him at the church office at (817) 282-9181.

Annual Pentecost Offering Sunday May 27

When you give to the Pentecost Offering during Sunday morning worship, you help bring

God’s transforming, redeeming love to children at risk, guide and nurture young people’s

growing faith and provide opportunities for young adults to become spiritual leaders—all in

the name of Jesus Christ.

Be sure to read your bulletin inserts during May for more specifics.

Or go to http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/specialofferings/pentecost-offering/

A portion of this offering is kept by St. Philip to use for young people in our own community.

Your generosity is much appreciated.

Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership Award

It is always such a pleasure to be able to take part in the Honorary Life Membership Award. The women who are recognized have always been an inspiration to me and none more so than this year’s recipient.

She has been involved in many aspects of our congregation’s life at St. Philip. She has undertaken all of these endeavors with a positive and optimistic attitude as well as great skill. She has been director of Vacation Bible School and served diligently on our Parents Day Out board for three years. She served on the Christian Education committee and as a communicant sponsor for our youth. She and her husband of fifty six years have also been active in the Mariners group. She has been a dedicated and faithful teacher to the Grace Bible study group. She led an informative and interesting book review in November for the Library. She is a compassionate and caring Stephen minister and is now serving as an elder for the class of 2014.

Born in Casa Grande, Arizona she moved to Petrolia, Texas where she graduated third in her class of eighteen. She graduated from North Texas State College in 1957 and also earned her Masters of Education and Counseling. She was a dedicated teacher in the HEB school district for forty six years. After retirement she still served the children she loved and cared for as a diagnostician. After retirement she took art lessons and has become so proficient that her work has been displayed throughout the community. Not only does she give her art work to family and friends, she does commissioned work as well. She is a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. I am delighted that her family could be here today as we honor this year’s recipient of the Honorary Life Membership Award-LEE LARKIN.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS UPDATE

Repairs to the roof will begin soon. This much needed work will cost nearly $69,000. The Session has voted to use the money from the Capital Repair and Replacement Fund. This fund was set up several years ago for the ongoing maintenance of the church. Recently other maintenance on air conditioning units and a boiler has depleted much of the 2012 annual Building and Grounds budget. Members and friends are encouraged to give special donations to the Capital Repair and Replacement Fund to help with the ongoing maintenance of our wonderful church facility. Please mark your checks with this fund name. If you would like to know more about the work of the Building and Grounds committee, please talk with Tom Mercer who is the chair of this committee. Other members of the committee include Jim Dixon, Henry Mares, Bob Urban, Kenneth Anderson and Lynette Mercer.

St. Philip Adopt-A-School Program Honors Hurst Junior High Students and Teachers

On May 2, 2012, St. Philip hosted the seventh annual Red Raider Reward Luncheon at Gaylord Texan, honoring 17 students from Hurst Junior High and 3 outstanding teachers chosen by Ms. Lesli Guajardo, principal of Hurst Junior High. The pupils are nominated by teachers for determination, good character and/or most improvement of grades or social issues. These 17 were chosen from over 1,000 students attending Hurst Junior High. This recognition for these desired qualities and improved performance is the one most important thing St. Philip can do for her students, Ms. Guajardo said. Over the years this luncheon has taken on a life of its own at Hurst Junior High, and it is an honor among the students to be chosen to attend.

Greg Garis spoke to the group and led us in prayer. Attending from St. Philip were Edith Vaughn, Red Freeman, Susan Riley and Dave Riley.

This is an example of our Adopt-A-School program at St. Philip. Funds for this luncheon are taken from donations from the Alternative Christmas and Local Mission Markets done in years past. There is no budgeted money used for this annual occasion. If you would like to make a donation to this annual event, please designate account 9035 on your check. Church members pay their own way, of course.

If you would like to attend the luncheon next year please speak to Susan Riley.
