From the Campus Principal

Welcome to the latest edition of the Tenby Schools, Penang newsletter.

CIS Membership Report

As mentioned in previous newsletters, Tenby Schools, Penang received a very positive and supportive CIS Report as a result of our CIS membership visit. As that success was the result of a shared endeavor on the part of Staff, students and parents, I consider that all should share in what has been written about our school.

For this reason, I have had copies of the Report made and placed in each of the following locations;

Offices of the Heads of School (TIPS, TISS, STPS and STSS)

The Admissions and Marketing office

School Administration offices

All members of the School’s community are invited to read the Report in one of the above locations. I would ask that no copy is not removed from the offices.

Tenby Vision, Mission and Core Values

Periodically, I consider that it is constructive for our community to be reminded of the Tenby Group philosophy as expressed through our Vision, Mission and Core Values. They are, along with our School Development Plan, at the heart of what gives us our direction and underpins all that we do.

At strategic points around the School campus, the sign on the right has been placed to remind all members of our community that in order to achieve our common goals and aspirations as a school, we all need to be not only mindful of what our school stands for, but to also all be moving in the same direction. This is represented by the word “Aligned”.

The word “Focused” refers to being aware that all that we do and say needs to be with the aim of moving us further forward towards the values, beliefs and philosophy that makes our school successful and unique.

The word “Supported” refers to the point that all members of our community is valued and that each individual will be supported in their endeavours; academically, professionally, emotionally, creatively, and that it is expected that each individual will be supportive of others.

We are developing a very positive and progressive school culture which needs to continue to evolve for the benefit of not just our students’ development as fully-rounded and well-grounded young global citizens, but also for the benefit of all members of the Tenby Schools, Penang community.

As a reminder……..

Our Vision

A United World At Peace - Through Education

Best Regards,

Gregory C Mowday Campus Principal

From The Head of STPS

The year 4, 5 and 6 went on a 3 days trip to Langkawi and it was definitely a thumbs up. Students had a great time immersed in the activities, popular tourist attractions and educational places of interest. In addition it was a good experience for our young students to be away from home without their family. It provided an opportunity for the students to interact with each other outside the confines of school. Many of the students felt the trip was too short. I am sure the memories of this trip will be one of the bookmarks of their school life. I would like to commend all the students for the way they presented themselves during the trip. Their punctuality and compliance to teachers’ instructions were key factors to the smooth running of the entire trip. I would like to thank all the teachers who accompanied the students. Thank you for the care and patience to take charge of a group of enthusiastic and boisterous young students. I am sure we came back relieved and tired but knowing that we have done a good job. Next week will be another busy week. Our annual concert will be on the 20th November 2015 at 7.00p.m., the venue SRJK(C ) Shang Wu, Jalan La Salle, Penang. Participating students should report by 4.00p.m. on that day to prepare for the concert. We welcome parents who want to assist in the concert. Please see me or any of the teachers. Rehearsal will be on the 19th November 2015. Rehearsal day will be a school day and students who are participating in the concert will be transported to the venue by bus from school. Please read circulars regarding reporting time and what to do. As a closing note we are looking forward to the UPSR results sometime this week. I hope that the results will reflect as accurately the full potential of the students who sat for the assessment. Regards

Bahasa Malaysia Lessons are always interesting and engaging. The pictures show students engagement in one Bahasa Malaysia lesson on writing and information transfer. Pictures show students doing group work under the guidance of the teacher. During the lesson each group gave their presentation and they were assessed by their peers . The interaction among the group was healthy and constructive towards learning.

The scouts of Sri Tenby are now helping to make props for the school concert. They are putting their painting and constructing skills into making realistic trees and cage.

Photographs show some scouts at work painting the trunk of the trees. They will put in the branches and leaves to complete the trees.

Langkawi Trip

Day 1 (2 Nov 2015) (Monday)

We gathered at the airport at about 10.10 a.m. After we checked-in, we waited with our friends. While waiting we played our digital devices, chatted and called our parents. At 12.50 p.m., we boarded the plane and departed and arrived at Langkawi at 1.20 p.m. We took a delicious lunch on arrival.

After lunch, we visited the Oriental Village. There we took the Cable Car Ride and visited the 3D Museum. The cable car ride took us to the peak of Gunung Mat Cincang. The view was beautiful and breathtaking. On the way up we saw a very long rainbow.

The visit to the largest 3D museum in Malaysia was very intriguing. We took lots of photographs there. The photographs taken with the exhibits seem so realistic and original.

Before dinner we browsed through a duty free shop to see what we can buy. The dinner was sumptuous and we had our fill.

Day 2 (3 Nov 2015) (Tuesday)

We woke up at about 6.20 a.m. and after getting ready we headed for breakfast. The first visit for the day was Kilim Geoforest Park. There we boarded boats which took us for a sea safari for about 2 hours. We visited a cave filled with bats, a fish farm and watched eagles feeding. The rock formation was beautiful and some resembles animals. Then we went out into the Andaman Sea where we could see Thailand which is a short distance away. After the interesting boat ride we returned to shore and visited the Gallery Perdana. Gallery Perdana is a gallery that shows all the items/gifts given to our former Prime Minister. Next we visited the Wildlife Park where we played and fed the animals there.

After lunch we visited Mardi Agro Farm, a agriculture research station. There we toured the facilities and were treated to some delicious fruits. The last attractions that we visited on the second day was the Mahsuri Mausoleum. There we watched the video about Mahsuri, we saw her house, the well and her grave. We now have a better understanding of this legend which we have read in our Kajian Tempatan books.

Day 3 (4 Nov 2015) (Wednesday)

After breakfast we visited the Underwater World. We saw lots of animals and sea creatures there. The last activity of our trip was duty-free shopping. Most of us bought lots of chocolates.

The flight back was smooth and we arrived on time. We were so happy to see our parents waiting for us at the arrival concourse. After saying good-bye to our friends we went home with our parents. What an unforgettable trip. - By Valerie Mah

From The Head of STSS

Dear Parents,

Form three students are having an exciting time in school after their PT3 Exams. There are programmes all lined for continuous learning.

Introduction to the Form Four Curriculum.

The students participate in a series of talks and lessons conducted by teachers on the form 4 curriculum. This exposure to new subjects like the pure sciences, commerce and accounts will provide an insight into curriculum requirements. It would also offer some guidance in their choice of the arts or the science stream.

The Anti –bullying Campaign (Tenby Secondary)

16 November is Anti-bullying Week. Students across the secondary school will speak up against verbal, social and physical bullying.

Form three students put on their thinking hats and came up with the project of putting up wrist bands with anti-bullying inscriptions for sale. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to a charity.

The students will also present facts, findings and their opinions against bullying during the joint assembly.

Chinese Calligraphy Competition (18 November)

All students can put their calligraphy writing skills to the test during the Calligraphy Competition.

There will be two categories.

Advance

Beginners

There are more exciting programmes in store for all the students now that examinations are over. We will keep you informed!

Building and launching a Water Rocket

The Science teacher, Ms. Chang Yin Yin and the Form 3 students built a plastic water bottle rocket. All we needed for the project were a water bottle, cardboard, cork, a pump with a needle adapter water and we got down to work.

Actually the project was a culmination of what we had learnt in science lessons. We put into practice Newton’s three laws of motion which describe how all objects move. The third law says:

‘For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’

This experiment demonstrates how to build a water bottle rocket using pressure and the response of a vehicle to external forces.

It took us a few days to put the rocket together. There hitches and failures but we took it all in good stead and even laughed over some the mistakes.

We really had fun learning through errors. However, the hard work paid off as the rocket was successfully launched. What great heights it attained! We could not believe how high it shot into the sky.

The other students from Tenby, were as excited when they witnessed the launching. Of course everyone wanted to try their hands at launching the rocket too!

It was an experience to cherish.

- By The Form three scientists

Let’s create our new rocket…

Are you sure, is balance??? Let’s check.

Teachers and students work together to make it success.

Still working on it and make sure it can shoot high later.

Final checking, make sure is in correct position…..

From the Head of TISS

Dear Parents,

I’d like to start by mentioning the very successful ‘Halloween Evening’ last Friday. I was overwhelmed by the amount of time and care that parents had spent on preparing the costumes for the students, the amount of people who attended and the great work by all of the teachers, students helpers and TSPA. It was an excellent event and I look forward to more events like this in the future.

We started this week with an assembly on International Authors Day, had updates on our house competitions and also information on local charities.

Next was the ‘Sixth Form Information Evening’, this was a huge success and I was very happy with the positive, supportive atmosphere during the evening and believe we are making excellent progress in offering our students the best pathways through to universities or help in their future career choices.

Warm regards,

Mr Paul Walton

Physical education is my favourite subject. I am a person who really enjoys sports and since the first day I came to Tenby, I have always looked forward to all my PE lessons. The number one thing I like about PE , is the teachers.

Mr. Baz and Mr Fadzli are the best teachers ever. Every lesson I go to, I can see the determination in their eyes to teach us new skills. They would organize games and challenges that promote physical activities among all of us students. All the time they will teach with a goal in mind to develop motor activities among their students. These teachers are beyond compare!

The sports we learn during PE range from basketball to football and even gymnastics. I have absolutely gained a lot of experience as well as learning many different life skills. What I love in PE lessons is that I can feel the rush of excitement as I keep learning .In PE we learn in a different way. In other subjects I just sit down on my desks writing on a paper, however in PE it’s different. We can ran a round feeling free as ever as we learn beneficial skills. Physical education is the only subject where I can really be myself.

Even though PE is already amazing, it can still be improved. I am always pumped up about my PE Lessons.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION is definitely my favourite subject!!!!!

Bryan Lee Year 8

***********************************************************************************************************************************

PE ( Physical Education) in Tenby is very fun. It allows people from other classes to bond together whilst learning new things. PE is a time where people are strong and improves discipline, especially when it comes to following instructions. However, some children still can improve, as there will always room for improvement. That is why we have our teachers, Mr Baz, Mr Fadzli and Ms Nur. They are supportive tutors who will tell us how to improve and is the key to teaching us new things. The students help by listening, and then doing it. Mr baz, one of the teachers, is someone who is very supportive and will do his best. So will Mr Fadzli.

People like me, enjoy a variety of sport, such as football, basketball, swimming, cricket, rounders, etc. this help us gain more skills and improve concentration.

Swimming in Tenby very fun. We have a clean pool and many people can swim in it. It’s my favourite sport. Our teachers separate us into 3 groups which is beginner group, intermediate group and advance group. They try to let the beginners reach intermediate level during the school year. Furthermore, advanced swimming can play and improve their skill, as no one gets left out.

Overall, I think PE in Tenby is a great place to be and I hope to see you having fun!

Dear Parents,

This week we have been focusing on our International Mindedness. The whole school has been learning about Deepavali and the history and customs linked to this celebration. Over the week we have also created a Rangoli pattern near the main TIPS entrance. Small groups of children worked with Ms Astya to produce the detailed design out of coloured rice.

We wish everyone a Happy Deepavali.
