The sale commenced with small items which saw a large selection of workshop and hand tools easily sold with seasonal items such as lawn mowers and gardening equipment now finding greater interest from purchasers. The large item auction continues to attract the weird and the wonderful with the highlight of this sale being a Mitsubishi Tracked Tractor Unit which sold for £9000. Other items of interest were a Skid Steer achieving £3000, Kubota RTV £2500, Small Garden Tractor £1280, Vicon Haybob £1150, Tipping Trailer £850, Ford Ranger Van £860, Sheep Snacker £480. Also today saw the first sale of garden plants and shrubs which saw a wide variety of plants on offer suitable for all types of gardens. NWA J36 - Monthly Machinery Sale

Saturday 12th March

The monthly collective sale of machinery at NWA J36 saw a wide selection of items offered for sale with buyers in attendance from throughout the northern counties.

The sale commenced with small items which saw a large selection of workshop and hand tools easily sold with seasonal items such as lawn mowers and gardening equipment now finding greater interest from purchasers.

The large item auction continues to attract the weird and the wonderful with the highlight of this sale being a Mitsubishi Tracked Tractor Unit which sold for £9000. Other items of interest were a Skid Steer achieving £3000, Kubota RTV £2500, Small Garden Tractor £1280, Vicon Haybob £1150, Tipping Trailer £850, Ford Ranger Van £860, Sheep Snacker £480.

Also today saw the first sale of garden plants and shrubs which saw a wide variety of plants on offer suitable for all types of gardens.

The next Machinery sale at NWA J36 will be on Saturday 2nd April.

Saturday 12th March

A busy day at the March Poultry sale saw a fast trade for all classes. Opening the sale was a very well built large hen cabin from Messers Edgar, which sold for £235. Other equipment sold to £140 for a fully automatic incubator from S Davies, Wrexham.

Large Fowl sold to a top of £110 for four Cream Legbar Pullets from WS Burrow & Son, Gibralter Farm. Others sold to £65 twice for three Bluebell Pullets from E Parker, Carnforth. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 11th March A mixed show of Store Cattle forward this morning, both the big and the young cattle sold to a strong trade, however the in between sorts were a fraction easier on the week. Topping the sale was regular vendor H Chapman & Son, Middleton with a pair of 22month Charolais to £1290. Angus bullocks sold to £1180 on four occasions, from D & N Davis, L Parsons & Son, EJ Ward & Sons and J & H Davis. Heifers sold to £1160 from C Hayhurst, Chipping with a nice Charolais. Another good show of Cast Cows and OTM cattle forward at Lancaster today. Numbers are still coming forward with 131 passing through the ring and 100% clearance being achieved. Top gross overall came to £1224 for a Limousin Bull from PA & D Slater, Barnacre. Dairy Cows came to a top of £857 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. On the whole a similar trade for dairy cows on the week with the best sorts 115-118ppk, topping at 121.5ppk on two occasions from K, SD & JA Ward, Arkholme and JH Parker, Slaidburn. As deadweight prices begin to take a drop, vendors are urged to forward cattle to the live ring to achieve the best possible trade for your cattle, “Sell live and thrive”. Topping the calves was a smart Angus Bull from R Capstick & Sons at 6weeks, realising £380 with other Angus Bulls to £330. British Blue bulls sold to £325 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham, whilst heifers sold to £280 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Blue heifers in strong demand, averaging £273 with an average age of 40days. Limousin calves sold to a fast trade also, with JH Towers selling Lim Bulls to £315 and heifers to £290. Black and White calves dearer this week, best sorts £100-£105, topping at £122. Monday 14th March Sheep with Lambs at Foot sell to £185 a family

The trade for Prime Hoggs had strengthened all week with buyer expressing plenty of interesting for today’s sale where many more could have easily been sold to vendors advantage with all vendors leaving very pleased with their trade. An overall market average of 192ppk with a SQQ average of 195ppk. Plenty of pens of continental hoggs selling around the 200ppk. Hill hoggs saw mules sell to £87 from JA Bargh and Son of North Farm. Pens of Scottish black face hoggs from WM Pye Jnr of Tarnwater regularly sold around 200ppk.

Lucy Blades of Hill Top Farm, Arkholme is doing a charity Sky Dive on 2nd April raising money for Rosemere Cancer Foundation. A Texel

prime hogg was donated to the cause sold for £100 to Mr. Alam of Lancashire Direct. Donations will be gratfully received.

Mule ewes sold to £88 for a pen of 6 from A &FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel, others to £86 from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine, with all forward to average £79.14. Horned sheep to £50 for a trio of Swales from Paul & Raymond Ayrton, Over Wyresdale. All ewes forward averaged £66.

There was another strong number of Sheep with Lambs at foot forward with 50 families forward. More buyers and on lookers today as spring

moves ever nearer and the weather begins to improve. Buyers looking to purchase families with well grown lambs, with Texel ewes and twin

lambs selling to £185 from J & A Heaps & Son of Burns Farm with other mule and continental ewes with strong Texel twin lambs achieving

£170. Mule ewes with younger twin lambs sold between £145 and £150.

The sale of Store Hoggs saw a top price of £82 for Texel x, with other pens of better sorts £65 - £70. Medium sorts £55 - £62, smallest sorts £35 - £48. A very mixed show forward with most vendors now selling their last hoggs. A small entry of breeding sheep saw in-lamb ewes carrying twins sell to £105, with others at £100.

The weekly sale of Calves, as seen in the local area, had a reduced number of calves forward as many vendors are about to start calving their spring herds. There was a strong trade for black and whites and, once again, they were keenly bid for at J36. A young entry of black and whites saw better three to four week old rearers selling between £70 and £90, with bobby calves selling between £30 and £50. Stronger beef calves selling in excess of £300, with younger types tending to be £200 plus.

The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot created plenty of interest, with a busy ringside of purchasers and potential vendors watching the trade. Aged continental ewes with young twin lambs sold to £165 from E Parker of Cragg bank. 2 crop Rough Fell Mule ewes sold to £165 from M Sykes of Ulverston. Broken-mouthed ewes with strong Texel lambs sold to the late one hundred and fifties. An overall average of £53.54 a life.

An entry of 25 Texel ewes and lambs for next week.

A very mixed show of Prime Hoggs were presented to a full ringside of buyers and despite a lot of hill bred hoggs forward, a very strong average of 191.46p/kg was achieved.

Hoggs topped at £110/head for Suffolk hoggs from Messrs Woodburn of Ulverston. Good quality, export type hoggs regularly 220-240p/kg, topping at 242.5p/kg from B J Bowness of Burneside. Heavy hoggs continue to sell well, with several buyers looking for these each week.

The strong trade for Cast Ewes continues at J36, with all types of ewes once again eagerly bid for and more needed to meet the demand of a busy active ringside of buyers. Strong continental ewes sold over the £100 mark, topping at £109 from E Lund & Son of Lundholme, for a couple of Texels. Stronger Mule ewes regularly in the eighties, topping at £87 from J & M Wilson of Cooper House. All Mules forward averaging £77. More hill bred ewes in the market today. Horned ewes topped at £78 JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall, with all Scotch Blackface ewes averaging £71. Strongest Swaledale ewes sold into the sixties with meated ewes selling in the fifties.
