Dear parents and friends of the school, Super 8 Cricket at Rand Mrs Orr and Mrs Barnes took primary cricketers to Rand for super 8s recently. The junior team had a good win and all students had a great day. School Certificate Last week our Year 10 students completed their School Certificate examinations in English, Mathematics, Sci- ence, Civics and Computing studies. This will be the last year that the NSW School Certificate with be in place. The girls worked hard and we wish them all the best for their results. Secondary Maths Challenge Day Last Thursday Mrs Davis took a team of Years 7 & 8 to Finley for a maths challenge day. They had a great day and enjoyed the opportunity to practise their mathemat- ics and mix with other students. Melbourne Infants Excursion Friday was our annual Infant excursion to Melbourne. It is always great to see the excitement and enjoyment that the small students get from the whole experience. It makes all the organisation and the long day worthwhile. This year the area of study was ‘Transport.’ We visited the ‘Polly Woodside‘ sailing ship which was fantastic. We rode on a water taxi, ran on the beach, went up the Eureka Tower, travelled on trams and trains and visited the Melbourne Airport. The children were fantastic, beautifully behaved and really interested in everything. Thanks to Mrs Gorman, Ms Outram, Miss Smith, Mrs Orr and Mrs Davis for their care and enthusiasm and, as always, to Wangaratta Coachlines who look after us so well. Transition Days Both Preschool to Kindergarten and Year 6 to Year 7 transition days are currently being held. This week Kin- dergarten cooked their own lunch of pizza and fruit ke- babs and Year 6 joined secondary in their own class experiencing subject areas that will be new to them. Next week there will be a new Kinder parent informa- tion session before the children go home and Year 6 will join secondary classes for a ‘normal’ secondary day. Both groups are very excited and keenly looking for- ward to next year. Year 12 Graduation at Barellan Friday evening will see staff, Year 12 students and their parents travelling to Barellan for their Graduation Din- ner. This is the first group of Oaklands senior students to graduate under the Riverina ACCESS Partnership. This has meant a real change for the school in that our HSC students are now part of a much larger group with far greater opportunities, both academic and social. We are all very pleased with the outcomes and look forward to many years of success. Infants Melbourne Excursion 2011 What a wonderful trip we all had! Years One, Two and Three boarded the bus at 5:10am waving happily goodbye to all the parents. Off we drove to Savernake where we picked up a few students and Mrs Davis and Ms Outram and then to Mulwala for Mrs Orr and some Savernake students. Then it was quiet or sleeptime till Benalla. Everyone was so well behaved and rested happily till Benalla knowing what a big day we had ahead of us. At Benalla we had a good tuck in to the wonderful food the parents so kindly provided. Many of us were very hungry by then as we had been up for a long time. Quick toilet stop then back into the bus, wide awake and ready to enjoy the day. Everyone chatted, played cards and went in the drawing competition and this filled in the time till after a quick toilet stop, we arrived at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Here we had a fruit break and then headed off to the Polly Woodside and the water taxi. Mrs Gorman slipped back to pick up the train tickets. The water taxi was great. We split into 2 groups and went for a 20minute explore of the Yarra River. The other group went to the Polly Woodside. This was a big, old beautifully restored sailing ship from the past. It is cared for by the National Trust. Our tour guide was the best. He made us all say ‘Aye, Aye every time we an-swered him. We got to put down flags, turn the turn-style, work different parts of the vessel, see the inside bedrooms and kitchen and avoid the cranky captain who was in his cabin. We scrubbed the decks with real brooms and our guide threw water at us. The hour went so quickly. The groups swapped over. After the water taxi ride we went into the Polly Woodside Museum and searched for different things as well as stamps for our passports. Mrs Gorman got us some stickers as a reward for great behavior. They were all about pirates. It was then back to the bus and off to the beach for lunch and a play. The beach was so good. For many of

us it was the best part. We paddled, collected shells, made castles and generally had fun. We stayed there a bit longer than planned because we were having such fun. Gerard, the bus driver kindly drove us to Eureka Tower and up we went in the lift 88 floors, zoom. Our tummies felt very funny. From Eureka Tower we could see the beach and the Polly Woodside and the water taxi and all the buildings around Melbourne. The cars were like matchbox toys and the people like ants. We could go where we liked provided we were good and it was fun looking through the telescopes. Coming down made our tummies go funny as well. Then we walked along South Bank and across the bridge to Flinders Street Station. We caught a tram up Collins Street and learnt how to put our tickets into the ma-chines. It was a bumpy ride. When we got off we crossed the road and caught another tram back to Flin-ders Street. At Flinders Street we went down stairs and caught a train that went under the city. We stayed under the roads and buildings for 4 stations and got out at Parliament . Here we had rides an huge escalators. We went up and down waving to each other. When we finally popped out from under the ground we were back in the city and low and behold there was our bus. We had afternoon tea and primas in a park and then hopped back on the bus to go to the airport. It was fun going to the airport because the traffic was heavy and there were lots of cars, buses and trucks to see. At the airport we had to go through the security gate and get tested to make sure we were not carrying something that was not safe. Mrs Kerr had to have a special test. Then we went to all different windows and places to see planes landing, taking off, loading and taxiing. We saw one plane being towed. MS Outram wanted to buy some chocolates and we wouldn’t let her. It was time to leave the airport so we rang the bus and as we came out the door the bus zipped up and on we got. McDonalds was our next stop. We all got to order what we wanted, within reason and we sat down and ate ‘like ladies and gentlemen’. When everyone had finished eat-ing we cleaned up, went to the toilets, played for a few minutes in the play area then got back onto the bus ready to come home. We packed our bags so we wouldn’t be looking for things when we got home and watched Shrek 2. After the movie it was lights out and we all had a good sleep all the way home. The teachers were very pleased with our behavior. We dropped some people in Mulwala, Savernake , then it was home to Oaklands. The teachers woke us all up when we got close to home and we got our bags and pillow and rugs and hopped off the bus to be picked up by our parents. The teachers and Mrs Nolan unpacked the bus and took all the tubs and things inside. So the excursion was over. We all had a wonderful time. We can’t wait till next year when we go again.

Thanks to all the teachers who gave up their time to take us and to CAP and the school for making it affordable. We spent our fundraising money at McDonalds so our food was all paid for. All in all an outstanding success. Margot Gorman and the team and kids. Melbourne Trip On Friday my class went to Melbourne. First we went to the Polly Woodside and my favourite part is when Charlie got splashed and when we washed the deck. After Polly Woodside we went on a water taxi and after we went to the beach and had lunch there. After lunch we went on a tram. After the tram we went to the Eureka Tower. After the Eureka Tower we went on a train and after the train, we went to the bus. Then to the Airport and after we went to McDonalds and after we went home. It was fun.

By Zak Sartore (Year 1) Melbourne On Friday I went to Melbourne. I had to be at school at 5am to hop on the bus to go on the Melbourne trip. When we got to Melbourne we went to the Polly Wood-side. After Polly Woodside we went to the water taxi and we went to the beach and collected shells. We went to the Eureka Tower and we went to the Air-port and we went to McDonalds. I liked our trip to Mel-bourne. We went on a hunt for the captain on the Polly Wood-side. I caught a tram and a train. I went on a bus. I had a great day full of transport.

By Jesse Moloney (Year 1) Melbourne Trip On Friday my class went to Melbourne. We had to get up very early. We had to pickup Saver-nake. When we got to Benalla we had recess and a toi-let stop. Then we got back on the bus to go to Mel-bourne. When we got to Melbourne, Mrs Kerr and my group went on the water taxi ride. When we got off the water taxi my group went to the Polly Woodside. We got on an old ship. The man on the old ship was very funny. It was fun. Then we got back on the bus to go to the beach for lunch and we collected shells. When we were finished at the beach, we got back on the bus to go to the Eureka Tower. When we got to the Eureka Tower we had to wait. Then we got to go on the elevator. The elevator was very fast, when we got to the top, we got to walk around by ourselves. Then when it was time to go we had to go back on the elevator again. Then we caught a light rail tram. When we got off the tram we caught a train. When we got off the train we all got back on the bus to go to a little place to have afternoon tea. After afternoon tea we got back on the bus to go to the Air-port. At the Airport Mrs Kerr and my group got to see the planes take off. When it was time to go we all got back on the bus to go to McDonalds. When we got to

McDonalds we all had tea. When we were finished eat-ing our tea we got to play for a little but then we had to go. We all got back on the bus again. When we got on the bus we got to watch a move. I fell asleep in the movie.

By Stephanie Munro (Year 1) My Trip to Melbourne I walked up to Mum to ask her if it was time to get up. I couldn’t really sleep. Polly Woodside was fun. I got to walk around on the boat. I liked the beach, I could collect shells. Eureka Tower visit was the best. The Airport was pretty cool and fun. McDonald’s was cool. I ate a double beef and bacon burger.

By Jacob Habermann (Year 2) Super 8’s Cricket at Rand On Friday, 4th November 2011 Years 3/4/5/6 went to Rand to play cricket. We played four games. Years 3/4 won all of their games so they won the shield. They won last year too. The shield is an old cricket bat that has a silver plate on it with the schools names on it that have won the competition over the years. Years 5/6 won two games out of four. Before 5/6’s last game we went to a cricket station where we all got a plastic bat then we were divided into two groups. My group had to get into a circle and hit the ball into the air and see how many times we could stop it from bouncing twice. Then we move over a station to a lady with a tennis racket. We lined up into two lines then the lady would hit the ball to us and we would have to call our name and catch the ball. If we dropped the ball we would have to go to the back of the line and if you were at the front of the line you were called king. After presentation we got on the bus and went back to school.

History. The Year 10 students are learning about Charles Perkins and The Freedom rides of the 1960s while the Year 9 students are immersing themselves in WWII Australia, writing personal letters about signifi-cant war events. Years 7/8 Technology sees us investigating Herb Gar-dening with a trip to Sandy Creek Herb Farm to have a close look at a commercial operation. In Visual Arts we are learning about painting on silk, a fantastic medium to work with, and creating some stunning artworks.

On Wednesday this week we had our first transition day with all those moving up to a new and exciting stage trying it out for the first time. Our new Year 7’s had a fantastic day starting with maths in the morning. They joined me for periods 2 and 3 where we cooked quiche with an individual twist. Students choose from a large range of vegetables and herbs to create a delicious, healthy lunch. Fortunately they had PE after lunch and Mr Longmire ran off all their extra energy with some energetic tennis exercises and games. It was great to see the students embracing secondary school life, a great day was enjoyed by all.

Mrs Fiona Marshall

Now we are past the half way point for the term, stu-dents are looking forward to the Hobart excursion and work experience excursion. School Certificate exams and 7-9 Yearly Exams proceeded well with students applying themselves well throughout the examinations. Junior students have been having a time of decision marking now the second round of electives have gone out. Students in Years 8-10 have a choice of Food Tech-nology, Agriculture or Design and Technology on the first elective line. Students in years 9 & 10 have a choice of Music and Drama on the second line, with Visual Arts, Metalwork and Commerce available on the third line. This is a great range of subjects for students to choose from. Students in Years 9 to 11 took part in Mock Interviews on Monday. We are very thankful to MICEEP in Albury for arranging three panel members to come out to Oak-lands and interview the students. The panel members have had many years experience of interviewing and recruiting staff so had real insights and invaluable tips to give the students. They were also impressed at how well the students interviewed. Students came dressed for the job interview, though most had changed back to school uniform by the time the photo was taken.

Next week will be a busy week, with Year 8 undertak-ing the ESSA testing on Tuesday (Science test com-pleted across the state). About forty Year 12 students will visit from the five other Riverina Access Schools on the Wednesday for this term’s study day. Thursday will also be the second Transition day for students com-mencing Year 7 in 2012. Andrew Glazebrook Head Teacher Secondary Studies
