Richard “Dick” Jones, 66, of Pownal Vermont, formerly of Angola, NY, passed away November 29, 2013 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont. Dick is the beloved hus-band of Donna Jones; loving father of Kris-tie (John)Giambrone of Brant, NY, Mindy (Jerry) Disorbo of Selkirk, NY, Brandon “ Bubba” (Re-becca) Jones of Angola, NY, Jedidiah, Samuel, Eli , Noah , Rachel and Cath-erine Jones all of Pownal, VT. Also survived by nine grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cous-ins. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10:00AM in The First Church of Evans, Derby, NY ( Rt. 5 at Sturgeon Point Rd.) Interment followed in the church cemetery. Richard was born in Silver Creek, NY and was the son of Albert and Em-ily (Lunsford) Jones. He graduated from Lake Shore Central High School, and attended Long Beach State University in CA. Richard worked in construction for most of his working ca-reer. Earlier in his years he worked for General Mills in Buffalo, NY, ,then the Woodford School Lunch Program, Morrison’s Au-tomobile Dealership and the Manchester Journal, of Vermont. . He enjoyed ski-ing, hockey, golf, cooking and cherished times spent with his family. PAUL L. SCHAEFER Paul L. Schaefer, age 66, of Eden, New York died Sunday, December 1, 2013 unexpectedly in his home. He was born December 12, 1946. He was the son of the late Leonard and Catherine Schaefer. Paul married his loving wife Carolynn S. Filip-iak on July 4, 1969 at St. Vincent de Paul in Spring-brook, NY. That same year Paul started his teaching career at Lakeshore Cen-tral School in the Industrial Arts Department. He also taught Driver Education for many years. After 32 years of service and touching many students, Paul retired from teaching in 2001. Also in 1969 Paul started his own photo company; Hilltop Photo. Until his retirement from the photo industry in 2008, Paul took many wedding photos in addition to family por-traits. He was a master at his trade. He loved people and had a unique ability to bring out a smile in every-one he photographed. After many years of his wife Carolynn working from their family home as a seamstress, they decided it was time to expand and move into a bigger and more accessible location. In 1998 the Eden Creative Sewing Center was opened on North Main Street in Eden, New York. They worked side by side grow-ing the business into what it is today- a haven for women to learn, and share common interests with others while momentarily escaping the many chal-lenges of life as well as experience fun and God’s healing touch. Paul will be remembered for his love of children, his positive outlook on every-thing, his genuine com-

passion for others and his ability to always be joking around. His family will remem-ber his enjoyment of start-ing new projects. Paul is predeceased by his parents Leonard and Catherine Schaefer. He is survived by his wife, Car-olynn, three sons; Todd (Kathryn), Scott (Col-leen) and Michael (Jescie) Schaefer.He is also sur-vived by one brother, Neil (JoAnn) Schaefer, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Immaculate Con-ception Church. Burial followed at the Immacu-late Conception Cemetery, Eden, NY. LEGION POST #928 LADIES AUXILIARY SENDS CHRISTMAS TREES TO TROOPS

In conjunction with Stokoe Farms, the American Legion Post #928 Ladies Auxiliary was able to send 10 fully dec-orated Christmas trees directly to members of the armed services who are stationed overseas. The Ladies Auxiliary purchased all the tree trimmings which included, garland, lights, tree skirts, tree toppers, and ornaments. There were also handmade ornaments made by children from our Hal-loween party. Every box also included a camera for the troops to take pictures of their surroundings and send back to share with the Legion. The Ladies Auxiliary used the proceeds from the 50/50, door prize and Lottery raffle from the Meat Raffle held in October to purchase the trees/decorations. While there is no substitute for togetherness, the Trees for Troops program gives just a little joy to service mem-bers and their families during the holidays.

CHARLES DICKENS ‘A CHRISTMAS CAROL’ AT THE ANGOLA THEATER

The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce presented on Saturday November 30th Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’, a solo performance by Mike Randall. The event took place at the Angola Theater. The performance was preceded by the ladies quartet, Images, who performed and lead a Christmas carol sing-a-long. The performance was very well attended, as it was viewed by a packed audience. The Evans Brant Chamber of Commerce would like to thank everyone who attended. In addition, they would like to acknowledge their main sponsor for this event, Goya Foods Great Lakes, along with these additional sponsors: Bella Terra Greenhouse, Evans Bank, Flexo-vit, Legislator John Mills, and Senator Mark Grisanti. On Saturday November 23rd members of Western Star Masonic Lodge distributed turkeys to the areas needy. Every year the Lodge collects donated turkeys and buys many more to donate. 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York• All homeowners currently receiving a Basic STAR tax exemption must register with the NYS Tax Department by December 31, 2013 in order to receive the STAR exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. • If you haven’t already registered and need help, bring the letter or postcard you received from the NYS Tax Department which contains your STAR code, along with the Social Security Number(s) of all property owners. • Senior Citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by the new registration requirement. Seniors must still renew their Enhanced STAR annually with the Assessor’s office. Renewal applications were mailed out in September and are due back by March 1, 2014. Business as usual for Enhanced STAR exemptions!

High school band students kicked off the year with pep band under the direction of Mr. Eric Blodgett for all home football games and the Homecoming parade. Students from all high school performing ensembles did an exceptional job at the fall concert on November 4th under the direction of Mrs. Anna Agro, Mr. Eric Blodgett, Mr. Glenn Molik, and Mrs. Carrie Poissant. Middle School general music students are learning about the history of music and how it has adapted and changed into the culture we have today. Fourth grade beginning band and string stu-dents are well on their way to learning their first five notes and the important fundamentals for playing their instru-ments. Meanwhile, the Middle and High School ensem-bles are working hard to prepare for their upcoming holiday concerts. Please come and support these young musicians at any of their upcoming concerts, which can be found on the district website or on any of the music teachers’ web-sites.

LAKE SHORE MIDDLE “MOVEMBER” FUNDRAISER

On Tuesday, November 26th, the Lake Shore Middle School participated in a “Movember” fundraiser. Mr. Piede, along with Mr. Reed, Mr. Kowal, and Mr. Dziewa, grew fantastic mustaches during the month of November to help raise awareness and “change the face of men’s health.” On November 26, donations were raised for Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Any participating student got to wear a mustache for the day at school! Miss Julia Harvey from Roswell Park came to our assembly to help educate us about what Roswell Park Cancer Institute does. After our assembly, the grade 7 students even participated in a mu-sic video for Roswell. We ended up raising over $750! At Lake Shore fundraising definitely starts with fun!!!

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL SEWING CLUB

Sewing Club has started at SCS. Each Week students work on skills to help complete a project. Everyone pro-gresses at his/her own rate and moves from "easy" to "more difficult" projects as the weeks go by. Sewing Club Mem-bers are responsible for fabric/notions along the way per-taining to the project. SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL CELEBRATES PRINCIPALS DAY

Every year on "Principals Day", the teachers at SCS get together and come up with a special way to celebrate our Principal, Mrs. Judy MacDonald. This is her 12th year as Principal at Southtowns Catholic School and so our theme was 12 months of the year. The kids were asked to bring in non-perishable food for each season. They collected soup & hot chocolate for winter, cereal for spring, apple & grape juice for summer and canned fruits & vegetables for fall. All the food was donated to the WNY Food Bank. SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC GRADE 5 STUDIES CLIMATES

Students in Miss Lindsey Wisniewski's Grade 5 Social Studies has been working on different climates in the Unit-ed States and Canada. The students have took notes, read text, completed activities and had group discussions on the climates. When they were done, each student had to pick a climate, research it. For the project, they had to describe the weather, list activities, describe what they would wear, list locations & give 5 additional facts. OLD TIME BAPTIST CHURCH TRIP Young people from the Old Time Baptist Church of Ham-burg and Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden travelled to Conneaut, Ohio recently to for a youth conference on Teen Suicide. Speaker Jake D’Andreau stated that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among ages 15-24 in America. Armed with a myriad of statistics and Biblical examples, Jake warned of three catalysts to suicide attempts: pride, rejection, and guilt. Mr. D’Andreau has spoken to over ten thousand teens in this past dozen years on this and other subjects. Many of the 150 young people present committed to choose life, and seek counsel if confronted by suicidal thoughts.
