D r Richard Russelltransformed Brighton byfamously promoting the
health benefits of seawater. Hisown home, Russell House, wasconveniently built right by thesea in 1753. Images of Brightonseafront from the mid-1700sshow the house on the edge ofa cliff, just above the water.
The Royal Albion Hotel wasbuilt on the site in 1826 tothe designs of prolific localarchitect Amon Henry Wildsafter Russell House wasdemolished in 1823. Yet weall know that the Royal Albionis separated from the sea bya wide road and broadpavements. And a generouscolonnade and ramps. Andthe shingle of the beach itself.
It is not the case that poetic licencehas been shown by artists of olde. Thetopography of the town has in factchanged. The Brighton of today doesstill sit on the top of a 40ft-high cliff butthis cliff is now hidden away from view.In effect, the beach has grown upwardswhilst the land has extended outwards.
The first wooden groynes were builtin Brighton in 1723-4 but these wereinsubstantial. The first concrete groyne was constructed at the bottom of East Street in 1876 and the second, the Albion Groyne (originally called theAquarium Promenade Groyne), was added in 1876. These led to the build-up ofthe shingle beach. King’s Road was built in 1821-2 to replace a cliff-top track. Itsconstruction was actually supervised by Amon Henry Wilds. The various stagesof the road’s construction can easily be seen today in the brickwork within someof Brighton’s many seafront arches. It was widened during the 1850s and1860s. When it was widened again during the 1880s, the extensive worksincluded the construction of the huge shelter beneath the promenade at thebottom of West Street which was, until recently, Riptide Gym. Land wasessentially being claimed from the sea.
Looking further back, the opposite happened. The Brighton of 1086, asrecorded in the Domesday Book, is thought to have existed below the cliff but thisso-called ‘Lower Town’ was shrinking. 40 acres are said to have been lost to thesea from 1290 to 1340. The Lower Town was burnt by the French in 1514 andthen finished off by the great storms of 1703 and 1705.

I t has been a busy weekend at Landlady Towers. On Friday evening, a newstudent arrived from Kuwait. I was mildly alarmed when the bus-sized taxideposited a bus-sized man and three storage-container-sized suitcases
outside my house. He looked rather like Matt Lucas in a black wig and isprobably about 50 years old. He was virtually waxen when he’d climbed the fiveflights of stairs to his bedroom. Although it was hard-going, I managed to single-handedly haul his luggage up the five flights before he’d managed to summonup the breath to protest.
Once my new lodger was installed, I went to see Miss T in Lewes and spentFriday night drinking wine, eating kebabs and dancing to Blondie in Miss T’sKitchen. As Saturday morning dawned, we felt in need of a Bloody Mary and theday proceeded in a slippery-slope-like fashion, ending with me on the 7.30pmbus back to Brighton. It would have been fine, had The Big Daughter not beenholding a farewell party starting at 8pm, of which I was an integral part. She’soff on a round the world trip, so we won’t see her for a few months. By the timethe first guests were arriving, I was still in the shower. Moreover, a huge amountof Taj carrier-bags bursting with fruit and veg had mysteriously appeared on thekitchen table. Even worse, all the booze had been taken out of the fridge, to bereplaced by a huge bag of Halal chicken.
I suspected that the shopping was the work of my new lodger and, being ashe was nowhere to be found, dispatched The Small Daughter to deposit thefruit and veg under the kitchen table where it would not be trampled by theparty guests.
In the middle of the party, anotherof my lodgers moved out, as he hadan early morning flight back to Saudi.Unfortunately, as he was carryinglarge bags, some of the moredrunken party guests thought hewas a burglar and tried to waylayhim on the stairs. This was ratherembarrassing as he’d just given me abottle of whiskey and some QualityStreet as a farewell gift.
The following day, as I was clearing-up after the party, my Kuwaitilodger ambled into the kitchen.Using sign-language, as heappears to speak no English,he asked where his fruitand veg were. I gesturedunder the table. He took acouple of the bags andgestured that he hadbought them for me. Heopened the fridge andindicated that the chickenwas also for me. After anawkward conversation,where I spoke pidgin Arabicand he did sign language, hefilled a bowl with the fruit he’dbought ‘for me’ and took it to hisroom. So now I’m in a dilemma as towhether to cook the chicken or not...
