P ooh, what a stench. I’ve just had my sensesassaulted in the street by someone wearingthe all pervading pachouli. My god, how it

stinks. It made my eyes water and a lady with adark hair problem on her upper lip had itinstantly bleached away. Okay, I’mexaggerating as usual, but really, itdidn’t half niff.

I like to smell nice and my currentfavourite is Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. Myfriend Mr L wears something calledFrench Lover but he pronounces it witha cod French accent worthy of KennethWilliams and it comes out as FrenchLiver. Not so nice an idea, whatevernext? L’Escargot by Lanvin, Chanel No5 – with side order of fried rice?

My father favoured Old Spice when Iwas growing up but only because therewas no alternative given that he wastoo sophisticated for Hai Karate. Mumwore Blue Grass by ElizabethArden and these were the scents ofmy childhood.

I started with Chanel PourL’Homme, a gift from the lovely JanLeeming, but that’s another storybest for another time.

I recently went to London for thelaunch of Aura-Soma Pegasus, arange of natural fragrances. I was abit early so I popped into TheWolseley and had a coffee with The Hoff, well sort of, he was sat at the nexttable and my, what a big man he is, huge, shiny and brown.

The presentation was just around the corner and was as delicious a treatas their excellent raw food menu. Carefully created over many years withLisa Brill, they have put together a range of perfumes that would suit aswide a range of tastes, from the delicately floral to more earthy, woodynotes. And the packaging is equally attractive, the bottles designed to looklike the dual coloured therapy products that they sell.

The perfumes have been made to exacting standards and with thehighest levels of integrity and the results are a delight. Now I must go outand seek pachouli man and steer him to Aloka in East Street where he willfind these magical new fragrances that could change his life, well the wayhe smells at least.

With all the excitement of their weddingthis week I bet Prince William and bride-to-be Kate, sorry, Katherine, have givenlittle thought to the possiblilty of aholiday home here in Brighton, theseaside city so loved by great greatgreat... grandpa George IV.

I find urban gardens so muchmore special than theirsuburban and rural

counterparts. What they lack insize, town centre gardens morethan make up for in the way thatthey surprise and delight. Urbangardens have enjoyed somewhatof a resurgence in Brighton andHove over the past few years and,for the time being at least,Brunswick Town stands out to meas the area making the greatestcontribution locally.

The City in Bloom competition, run byBrighton & Hove City Council, hascertainly provided residents with theimpetus to get together and make thebest use of outside areas. Last year,Brunswick residents picked up prizes ina number of categories including MostAttractive Urban Area, which went toFarman Street. This year, City inBloom focuses on communityefforts and the closing date forentries is 30 June.

In the past, I have visited theWaterloo Street Community Gardenwhich lies to the east of BrunswickTown and, of course, the garden ofBrunswick Square in the centre. On this occasion, therefore, it made sense tofocus on the Lansdowne area to the west.

Lansdowne Square is a short cul-de-sac just off Lansdowne Placeconsisting of nine houses without front gardens. As a self-contained mini-community, it lends itself well to community planting. I have no idea who, ifanyone, co-ordinates efforts but the various hanging baskets, window boxesand pots are a real treat.

Just around the corner on Lansdowne Place itself, the residents of twoneighbouring townhouses have taken different approaches to creatingwonderful front gardens. The first is a ‘cottage garden’ with a nucleus ofshrubs interspersed with yellow wallflowers, artemisia, purple heather, forget-me-nots and white tulips. The second is equally striking but requires lessmaintenance. The Mediterranean-style garden includes a hydrangea, alancewood, a laurel and bamboo.

Last year, Brunswick residents got together as ‘Brunswick Town in Bloom’ toenter the South and South East in Bloom competition and won a Silver Gilt Prizein the Best Urban Area category. The group includes members of variousresidents’ associations including Friends of Adelaide and Palmeira Association,Friends of Brunswick Square and Terrace, Lansdowne Area Residents'Association, East Brunswick Residents' Association, Brunswick StreetWest/Dudley Mews Residents, and Brunswick Place Residents' Association.

J ust lately, I’ve acquired a new boyfriend who is a very bad influence onme. Neither of us wears a watch and both of us refuse to go home untilwe’ve wrung the final drops of joy from the evening, which does not bode

well if you are also trying to lead a fairly normal life. I have discovered that heis best avoided if I have to work the next day or do anything which requiresthe use of even half a brain cell. It is quite simple really. If I don’t start, then Idon’t have to force myself to stop.

My children seem to have inherited my inability to stop once they’vestarted, apart from the youngest who is, as yet of course, an unknownquantity as far as this is concerned. On the weekend when the clocks wentforward, I had to work for four days on the trot. I managed to execute thiswithout too much difficulty by goingto work and going straight to bedafterwards, without even thinkingabout going out.

On the Sunday, I worked at TheSupermarket from eight until three. AsI was leaving work at 3pm, I saw TheBig Son looking rather peaky, queuingat the checkouts, desperatelyclutching a pack of hash browns. Heclaimed that he was about to makebreakfast at his girlfriend’s and thatthe meal would not be completewithout hash browns. I tutted and in akettle-calling-teapot-black kind ofremark, claimed that it was an utterlyridiculous time to be having breakfast.

When I got home, I had to preparemyself quickly to go out as a friend ofmine – Mr PG – was cooking Sundaydinner for myself and The SmallDaughter in return for my mendinghis toilet. In spite of my plumbingqualifications, I do not usually goround mending people’s toilets willy-nilly, but the promise of someoneelse cooking dinner for me is justabout all I need to get my spannersprimed and ready for action. I wasjust about to leave Landlady Towersat 4pm, when I received a text fromThe Big Daughter – apparently stilllanguishing in bed upstairs – askinghow much she’d have to pay me inorder for me to make breakfast forher. I wondered if both of my olderchildren were so thrown by theclocks going forwards that they’dactually gone mad, but found the textso funny that I did make breakfastfor The Big Daughter before going to mend the toilet. Unsurprisingly on thefollowing Sunday – which was Mother’s Day – I didn’t see any of my offspringat all, although they did manage to take me out for dinner on the followingMonday. This can only lead me to believe that my family must all be veryforward in going backwards...

In this high-spec eco renovation, the owner’s objective was to make his house more efficient andreduce his energy bills significantly. He also wanted more space via an extra room in the roof.
