I have a new and very special friend. His nameis Thrifty Nick and he lives in a shop window.I spotted him a few weeks back, but at first I
held back, I mean, do I need a new friend, andespecially one who lives in a shop window?
Now before anyone gets the wrong idea,Thrifty Nick actually lives in the window and notin a doorway. I have not take taken tobefriending the homeless on a random basis, farfrom it. I am in fact contemplating writing a selfhelp pamphlet to hand out to everyone whoasks me if I have any spare change, andespecially to those who have the audacity to doso whilst smoking a fag, clutching a can ofTennant’s Super and berating some poor dog ona bit of string. It could have some usefuladdresses on it and a message saying smartenyourself up! In every sense.
I took a taxi the other day and the driverinformed me that London, his words not mine,was driving homeless people down to Brightonin mini-buses and leaving them here in anattempt to clean up the capital for the Olympics.Surely not true? Please someone, confirm thatthis is not one of Boris’s initiatives.
Funnily enough Thrifty Nick has some of BorisJohnson’s sartorial style. In other words, hedresses like a loon. Boris usually looks like hedresses by running through a charity shop,Thrifty Nick simply lives in one.
After a while I started to take pics of Nick, a record of his wardrobe, hislifestyle and the women in his life. My word he has a lot of lady friends whodrop by. I even posted the pics on Facebook where they attracted even moreattention. So much so that others have joined in, snapping him on the dayswhen my busy schedule does not take me down London Road.
So great was the response that Thrifty Nick now has his own page, ThriftyNick’s Window, which he manages himself, adding curious quips and bonmots as he goes.
I’m sure that he is not the only window dweller of interest in Brighton’s richworld of charity shops and he tells me that he would love to hear from otherwindow dwellers. So if you spot them then find Thrifty Nick’s Window onFacebook and post a pic there, who know, they may become friends. I know forfact that he would like to find a steady girlfriend.PS Nick is not really interested in headless dummies. He says “It’s toughenough making small talk when you are a dummy. When you are a headlessone it’s damn nigh impossible!”.

Lord only knows what opinion of England my Korean student will be takingback to Korea with her. I am sure it will be bizarre at best and inaccurate atworst. With the exception of two foreign boys who stayed with me five
years ago and never left their room, which consequently became a stinking pit,she is definitely the student who has ventured outside her bedroom the veryleast. In the month that she has been with me, she has, as far as I can ascertain,only seen the inside of her classroom and the inside of her bedroom at LandladyTowers. There has been no evidence of day trips to London, meals out at localrestaurants or even visits to the Pavilion and Devil’s Dyke. Her weekends havebeen spent squirrelled away in her room, making various mercy dashes to thekitchen where she spends approximately 60 seconds cremating somethingbland and white, which she thendarts back to her room to eat.Although I’ve tried tocommunicate with her, the onlybit of animated conversationcame when the internet wasn’tworking forfive minutes*.
This behaviour is not unusual.My friend A also has a Koreanseemingly hibernating in herspare room. She even discovereda slow-cooker plugged in andslowly incinerating something inhis room and promptly bannedhim from using it. My Korean girlis self-catering too, which meansthat I don’t have to cook for her. Ithink she has taken self-cateringto a whole new level, as she hasbrought her own pots, pans andpackets of food with her. Maybeshe thinks we still have rationinghere? It certainly explains whyher suitcase weighedapproximately three tonnes whenshe arrived. I should know, Ihad to carry it up three flightsof stairs. She has been soinvisible, that when I said toThe Big Daughter that theKorean girl was leaving at theweekend, she asked ‘whichKorean girl?’
Although the Korean Girl isabout to depart, she has leftan irremovable reminder of her visit. She has deposited an ominous pan-shapedburn mark on the stairs, which is – I am certain – evidence of a rapidlyincinerated pan of super-noodles being carried too hastily upstairs without theuse of either caution or oven-gloves. She clearly preferred to burn my carpet andpossibly her fingers rather than risk meeting any family members in the kitchen.I know I am not keen on too much interaction with my lodgers, but surely a smallamount is acceptable? When permission was grantedto redevelop Park House, Iknew that I had to see inside
before it was gone forever.Park House is the large Edwardian
mansion between GoldstoneCrescent, Hove park Gardens and theOld Shoreham Road in Hove. In itsheyday, the sumptuous residencewas defined by a full-height cornerbay with a protruding semi-circularwindow on the ground floor, severalgenerous Mock Tudor gables, andvarious rubbed-brick details withultra-slim mortar lines. Modernextensions were presumably addedwhen it served as accommodation forBellerby’s Language College. TheHyde Group bought the complex inearly 2008 with a view to demolition.
Hyde started by submitting plansfor an identikit block of flats, whichwere turned down, as was an appeal.This ultimately prompted the developerto knuckle down and present somethingdecent. Plans by Andy Parsons ofBrighton-based Yelo Architects wereeventually passed in April for a yellowbrick and zinc L-shaped block of 71flats.
When I met Andy and Tom Shaw fromHyde on site to explore what had bythen become a derelict squat, none ofus had any idea how dreadfully thebuilding had been treated by thesquatters.
To get inside, we first had to getpast a most necessary anti-intruderdoor. The original had been lain downon its side within the entranceway.Everything else of value has beenstolen, including radiators and copperpipes. Large parties had quite clearlytaken place within but the buildingmore resembled the invaded colony inthe film Aliens than the set of, say, House Party. In one hallway and adjoiningroom, insulation was hanging from the ceilings in a way that made it look likean upside-down jungle.
By the end of the summer, Park House is likely to have been demolished. Iam glad that I got to see inside properly – without breaking in.robert@buildingopinions.comwww.buildingopinions.com

Beauty is on the insideThe secret to a good coat of paint liesin the preparation: cleaning, makinggood any problem plasterwork, andsanding down woodwork. And it’sworth taking the time to do it well, ifyou want your finish to last – paintworks best on walls that are in good condition. If the plaster work is a littleropey, fill any flaws before you start and make sure that you use a matt finish:satin or anything with sheen will highlight imperfections. If plaster needsserious attention, then either get it skimmed (apply a thin coat of new plaster),or opt for a lining or wallpaper.
Most people choose simple emulsion (relatively low-odour and quick drying)in a matt or – less commonly – silk (slight sheen) finish for walls. Woodworkand doors are usually treated with gloss (usually solvent-based, tough-wearing) or eggshell. There are specialist ceiling, kitchen and bathroom paints,

designed to be non-drip (ceilings), ormould and damp resistant. One-coatemulsions are okay for beginners, butapplying them can be hard work andyou don’t get the depth of finish thatcan be achieved with a simpleemulsion. Look out for the growingselection of eco-conscious solvent-free and organic paints that containnone of the chemical nasties thoughtto harm the environment.
And on the outside...Specialist masonry and exteriorwoodwork paints come in a huge rangeof colours. So long as you’re not livingin a conservation area whererestrictions apply, consider the style ofthe brickwork or masonry of your homealong with colours used on nearbybuildings when selecting a paint. Do you want to stand out, or blend in? A brightly hued home might be aneyesore in a relatively monochromestreet, but many areas (in parts ofHanover, for example) have rows ofcandy-coloured houses, whereanything goes. If your taste edgestowards the conservative, you canalways pick out a brighter tone in doorand woodwork colours. Technicaladvancements mean there are lots ofsmart exterior paints, too, with longerlife spans and increased durability.Masonry paint comes in a wide varietyof finishes, from textured to ultra-smooth. Opt for a texture if you need todisguise fine surface cracks. If youprefer traditional finishes, thenconsider old-fashioned limewash.
Colour & textureColour choice is as wide as your imagination. Many companies also offer ashade-matching service to help you get it right. When choosing colour, thinkabout how you use a room, and how you want it to fit with the rest of yourhome. ‘Cool’ colours such as white, pale blues or greens will make a room feellarger, and ‘warm’ colours – pinks, reds or oranges – will make it feel cosy.
If you’re decorating a period property, then consider some of the ‘historic’shades to match the period of your home. The Victorians loved crimsons andforest greens, and Georgian properties were typically decorated in shades ofburgundy, Wedgewood blue, soft grey and dusky pink. For a contemporaryfeel, this season we’re loving retro colours and tones used in the mid-20thcentury – teal, saffron yellow, avocado green, and grey. Strong shades can betoned down by using them on just one or two walls to make a visual feature –paint the rest in a neutral off-white. Textured paint contains sand or siliconebeads, and can be used to cover uneven surfaces. Alongside traditional Artexare some more contemporary textured paints that give a suede or velvet-likefinish. Metallic and pearlised paints can be used to enhance light in a room oras a feature.

Over the past few columns we’veshared some of our projects withyou, as well as talked about trendsin the Architectural world. This weekwe thought we’d share a project wehave proposed as part of ourcommunity interest company,Green Sea, so you can get an ideaabout what really makes us tick.Green Sea is a collective of Brightonbased construction professionals who share a common interest in our city.
This particular proposal is especially close to our hearts as it’s based inEdward Street, where our office is. Many of you will know Edward Street. It’s ahub of activity, a busy road, main bus route; big business, barristers and bingo –it’s all here! Sandwiched between Kemp Town, Tarner and Hanover, two areaswhich the local residents feel passionately about, it may all be going on, but atwhat cost? We got some key stakeholders together including Amex, St JamesStreet Action Group, Local Action Trust, Brighton and Hove City Council for aconsultation workshop to find out what they didn’t like.
So what did they say? Fast moving traffic, lots of noise, few trees it all makesfor something of a harsh environment.
A new vision for Edward StreetWith the suggestions in mind we have come up with a vision for a cleaner,greener Edward Street for those who live and work here:• Narrowing the road to single lane carriageways allowing for bus lay-bys and
delivery bays • Widen pavements to provide pedestrian comfort and safety, seating, planting
and cycle racks. • Create space for built interventions such as spaces for shelter, sitting,
gaining information • Green the central reservation • Green roofs and walls to identified buildings • Wild flower planting zones • Cycle paths • Identify potential building plots and disused buildings to provide new buildings
that will improve the design and scale of the street and activate under usedpublic spaces
• Reduce the distinction between pavement and road in places to provideshared space and a “sense of place”

U naffordable property prices andhigh rents together with a lackof clear government strategy
to combat homelessness means thatsquatting is becoming a way of life for many. Until recently, being onsomeone else’s property withoutpermission was not usually a crime initself, but if a person committed othercrimes in a property, the police act.New laws have been passed however,which make squatting itself illegal.
While home owners and landlordsbreathe a sigh of relief, the questionmany are raising is, ‘Is criminalisingthe homeless in the middle of ahousing crisis the best way to dealwith the issue?’ Currently, however, I can only offer the following adviceon what you can do to protect yourhome from squatters.
Prevention is always better thancure. If you plan on leaving yourproperty unoccupied for a number ofweeks you should always ensurethat it is left secure. Inform yourneighbours and ask them to keep awatchful eye. You could sign yourproperty over to a property guardianscheme. These look after emptyhouses and employ people to live inthe property, paying nominal rent.
If you discover squatters in your property, try to discover theirintentions. Make the police aware ofyour situation in case they are ableto intervene (police involvement willof course be greater once squattinghas been criminalised).
You are in a stronger position ifyou occupy, or are about to occupy a property. In this situation criminallaws apply and a squatter can bearrested if they do not move outupon receiving notice.
“Squatters’ rights” as they arecommonly known refer to lawswhich made it illegal to use violenceor threaten to enter a property inwhich someone is opposing entry.This legislation was introduced tostop landlords using violence toevict their tenants but is also usedby squatters. Squatters’ rights aresuperseded by people who live intheir property or are about to movein; they can in fact break down theirdoor to gain access.
People who do not fall into thecategory above have been requiredto go through the courts to regainpossession.
