S illwood Road resident Shan Lancaster wasoverjoyed when her new neighbour, PeterHarrup, joined her search to properly

identify John Constable’s Brighton home. Something like 200 of Constable’s works of art

were created during the time that he spent inBrighton with his family in 1824-8. One paintingthat particularly stands out is that of the ChainPier behind a bustling beach and choppy sea. Hewas known to have lived at 9 Sober’s Gardensfrom letters that he wrote during his stay in whatwas by then a thriving resort. Sober’s Gardenswas also known as Western Cottages and wasrenamed Sillwood Road during the 1870s.

Key to the story is a painting from 1824by John Constable that shows nearbyWestern Terrace and Gothic House alongsideWestern Lodge from a viewpoint that nolonger exists. Western Lodge features whatappears to be a balconied terrace above acolonnade and pedimented porch. It wasbuilt in around 1817 to the designs offamous local architect Amon Henry Wildsand later demolished. Wilds also designedWestern Terrace, and Charles AugustinBusby designed Gothic House.

It was Wilds and Busby who designedKemp Town for developer Thomas Kemp.Kemp’s sister was Mrs Ann Sober and itwas on the gardens of her house, WesternLodge, that Sillwood Road was built. As thewestern side was built after Constablelived in Brighton, he was able to paintWestern Terrace and Gothic House from hishome studio on the east side withuninterrupted views.

The mystery of Constable’s home wassolved when it was firmly established byShan that an artist called John James Masquerier lived at what is now 10Sillwood Road. Masquerier was a famous painter at that time and known to beConstable’s next-door neighbour. This confirmed that Peter’s home, 11 SillwoodRoad, was the home of John Constable. As an artist himself, who uses what wasno doubt Constable’s own top floor studio, Peter was thrilled.

Number 11 Sillwood Road has changed much since it was built in the early1820s. The three-storey semi-detached house, along with its adjoined neighbour,were extensively modified in the 1860s when the roof was raised, gables added,alleys built over, and Tudor-esque facades introduced.

To celebrate Constable’s time at 11 Sillwood Road, a blue plaque has beeninstalled. It was unveiled in July by artist Richard Constable – the great-great-grandson of the great man himself.www.buildingopinions.com [email protected]

I t is Sunday night and for the first night ever, I am destined to be alone allnight at Landlady Towers. It is 8.30pm and I am sitting in the empty livingroom alone drinking a can of Budweiser (a solo, well-hidden survivor of The

Big Son’s recent dawn raid on the fridge). I am wondering whether to watchDownton Abbey, or go to the pub. The Big Daughter left home on Thursday andhas embarked on her ‘round the world’ travels. Of course, she has no real reasonto contact me – bar possibly asking to borrow money – yet I have already beenfed a couple of titbits about her whereabouts. Her Boyfriend merely told me thatshe’s still alive and The Small Daughter showed me a picture of her on Facebook,sporting a large foam finger and Yankees shirt at a baseball game. She is now,apparently, on her way to San Francisco.

The Big Son is at his girlfriend’s house, in a somewhat pre-meditated ninja-style tactic, executed in order to avoid being present during a visit from myelderly relatives from Lymington, who came over for Sunday lunch and haveonly just left. It is always nice to see them, yet especially nice to see them go,as I run out of un-shocking conversation after the first two hours and then haveto resort to busying myself in the kitchen so that I don’t have to say anything.The Small Daughter stoically turned up, rifled through, then wore some of theremaining clothes from The Big Daughter’s wardrobe, but has now gone to theMetropole with her father.

I don’t even have any lodgers at the moment either,as the large, old Kuwaiti gentleman with a lot ofluggage had to move out because there were (still are,actually) too many stairs in my house. I have to saythat the stairs didn’t seem to agree with him at all andhe huffed and puffed his way up and down. He was acharming person, but his lack of understanding of theEnglish language was spectacular and, the other nighthe was in the kitchen with The Big Son and proceededto ask how to use the microwave in order to heat up achicken and bacon roll. The Big Son then rushed intothe living room to ask me if the lodger was Muslim, which indeed he is. Aftervery little pause for thought, The Big Son told me that it was my duty to tell thelodger that bacon was pork, which, after much miming and snorting, I managedto get across. My lodger – who is a large gentleman – looked so crestfallen atthe loss of his dinner that I gave him mine and wrote him a list of danger wordson food packaging to avoid in the future.It is now 9pm and I’m still alone. Don’t fancy Downton Abbey much...

Barbecue season is well and truly over. Last week we saw the last of thesunshine and warmth and our family grabbed the opportunity to flashfry our steaks and to (almost) burn the veggie sausages for probably

the final time this year. What a superb summer that was. Wouldn’t it be lovelyto be able to rely on the great British weather to come up with a string ofsunny weeks every year?

So, autumn creeps upon us and we head back to the warmth of the kitchenfor slow-cooked lamb and fragrant roast chicken dishes prepared in thecomfort of our kitchen that has been a haven for the family for seven years.

Kitchens are not what they used to be. Often the smallest room in thehouse a Victorian kitchen did not need to be a place to entertain neither did itneed to be a particularly nice space to work in. Originally all water-basedactivities like washing or preparing vegetables was done in the scullery so akitchen only needed to have a range cooker to function.

How far we’ve come! When our own extension was done we took out all thewalls that originally divided the kitchen, the scullery and the back loo and‘filled in’ the side return to create a generous airy space with quad-foldingdoors and large Velux windows. Instead of hiding at the back of the housecooking alone, we now welcome in our guests to share the whole meal experience.

And as far as choices for kitchen designs there is now a myriad of firmsbending over backwards to entice us to fit out our kitchens with the latestdesigner styles and finishes.

There is currently a great choice for consumers with the likes of TravisPerkins, Howdens, Magnet and Mereway competing for business. There areother manufacturers but, for various reasons, we try to encourage our clientsto go with our preferred suppliers. There is a very wide range of kitchen stylesto chose from, even amongst the individual suppliers, and one can spendanything from £6k up to well over £30k just on the material costs alone. Itemsthat will ensure you’ll part with more cash than most people would becomfortable with include Corian worktops, steam ovens, downdraft extractors,boiling water delivery faucets and halogen hobs.

We provide building solutions to families living in terraced or semi-detachedVictorian homes where sticking a £30k kitchen into the rear of the building,over and above the works for an extension, might seem a little indulgent.Certainly the cash laid out would not be returned in the new value of thehouse after installation so our approach is a little more fiscally rational.

The average cost of a kitchen fitted and installed in a typical family home inBrighton or Hove is £12k to 15k ex VAT. This would include all integratedappliances, solid wood worktops, built-in oven or free-standing range cookerand obviously the cost of fitting. Naturally, should there be the need to splashout on granite or a snazzy white ceramic sink then you may need to considera bit more but £12k ex VAT really should be enough for something that will bepractical and impressive and a solution that should last for many years. Infact, most kitchen installers guarantee their work and the manufacturers’product is usually backed up by a long warranty so as long as it’s fittedcorrectly a modern kitchen should last many years.

“Don’t Let DIY Trip You Up”

The growth in home improvement and garden makeovers hasresulted in a significant increase in the number of backinjuries suffered, yet a visit to the chiropractor can be avoidedby taking a few precautions when embarking on certain DIY

projects. Here are some pointers:

If you are planning to paint the ceiling, aim to apply the largest amountof paint in the shortest space of time. When using a paint pad or roller withextendible handle; face forward, hold it at chest height and try not to exertyour neck. Ideally lie down if you can, à la Michelangelo.

If you need to use a ladder, remember to face towards it and move theladder regularly. By keeping shoulders, hips and knees pointing in thesame direction you will avoid straining your back – or overbalancing.

When gardening, start with the lighter jobs first and work your way up tothe heavy- duty tasks. If pruning, use long-handled secateurs and get asclose to the plant as possible. Laying a patio can be made easier bykeeping each slab as close to your body as possible and not forgetting tobend your knees, keeping you back straight.

Think about your clothing – even for quick jobs. Wear durable clothesthat are neither or too constricting or too baggy.

When buying heavy DIY items such as cement, buy several smallerbags in place of one large one. However, if there are only large bagsavailable, ask for help to carry them to the car. When you get home, shovelout smaller quantities into smaller bags straight from the car.

Many accidents, strains and injuries are caused simply by trying to dotoo much in too little time. Unless you have shares in an osteopathy clinic –it’s just not worth it!
