Two individual members ofstaff in local offices of leadingestate agents Cubitt & Westscooped top honours, when

the company’s parent group, ArunEstates, held its annual awards nightrecently.

First, Jessica Cole from Cubitt’sKemptown office beat off competitionfrom the entire Arun network,comprising a total of 130 sales andlettings branches right across theSouth East, to take the title of BestNewcomer. This was in recognition ofthe spectacularprogress she hasmade sincejoining thecompany lastyear, which sawher advance fromTrainee SalesAdvisor to SeniorSales Advisor injust six months.

Then it was the turn of John O’Neilfrom the Western Road office whocarried off the Top Lister award. Johnwas recognised for his achievement insingle-handedly gaining moreinstructions during the year than anyof his colleagues in the other 42 Cubitt

& West offices, across Sussex, Surreyand Hampshire.

The two were presented with theirawards in front of a record 700 Arunstaff attending the gala event, held atthe Effingham Park Hotel nearGatwick last month, by Paul Rooneyand David Lench – respectively theGroup’s Chairman and ManagingDirector.

Social media plays a large partin most people’s lives. Mostyoung people use Facebook,Twitter and Tinder; certainly

most teenagers and celebrities recordtheir every move using social mediaand play their daily lives in public.

Whilst many can see the benefits ofsocial media, it also has its downside.For example, as matrimonial lawyers,we have seen that social media canplay a large part in the breakdown ofcouples’ relationships. Facebook, forexample, is now cited in many divorceand dissolution cases and is reliedupon as proof of unacceptablebehaviour. The social network websitecan provide concrete evidence ofunfaithfulness and extramaritalrelationships and it is believed thatFacebook has been referred to inapproximately one third of all recent divorces.

Perhaps Facebook has taken overfrom where Friends Reunited left off, asmany people appear to be contactingold flames and love interests whilststill in a current relationship.

When relationships break down,evidence of what one party conceivesto be harassment can be proven byexhibiting snapshots from Facebookpages, by way of example. Likewise,when dealing with the finances withindivorce proceedings, one partyshowing off their extravagant partyingand holidaying lifestyle via socialmedia can be detrimental to their case.We would advise anyone to exhibitcaution within the social medianetwork.

On another note, we are verypleased that same sex couples are nowable to enter into a legal marriage, andwe wish both Melanie Portas andMelanie Rickey, and Stephen Fry andElliott Spencer the very best wishes forthe future.

One of the questions raised by aJudicial Review Claim lodged byRebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidanis whether a man and woman shouldbe able to register as civil partners, asopposed to marrying. Rebecca and

Charles wish to formalise theirrelationship but are opposed tomarriage.

Section 3 of the Civil Partnership Act2004 states that people are not able toregister as civil partners if they are notof the same sex. Clearly, uponintroduction of the Civil Partnership Act2004, the idea was to allow same sexcouples to enjoy a similar status tomarriage. Now that we have theMarriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013,is it right that same sex couples have achoice, whilst couples of differentgenders do not? Rebecca and Charleshave briefed a leading QC and we willhave to watch this space!
