It sits within the famous Sandbelt corridor, and commands a high level of respect amongst the golfing community. Woodlands is considered to be among the top five golf courses in Melbourne and was rated No.12 in the country in Golf Australia’s most recent rankings.

The Club is steeped in tradition and history and celebrated its centenary in 2013, its 100 years spent in one location on the same idyllic stretch of land setting it apart from its peers.

Despite embarking on its second century, Woodlands remains an undiscovered gem to many. The course is visually stunning, immaculately presented and makes a

lasting impression on those who visit. Its vision is to be recognised as the classic gem of the Sandbelt.

Members enjoy a full programme of competitions, together with some exceptional off-course facilities to be found in our newly refurbished Clubhouse.

The Club represents an excellent choice as the venue for a wedding, any other special occasion, business seminar or conference. Any corporate golf day held here cannot fail to be a success.

We are a special Club, but we are a friendly Club too, and invite you to discover the warm welcome that awaits.

Woodlands Golf Club is a traditional championship golf course with challenging small greens and is located in the heart of Mordialloc, a pleasant 30-minute

drive from the City around picturesque Port Phillip Bay.

He approached the landowner and after some negotiation over afternoon tea was granted permission to play golf over what was the Mayfield Estate.

A motion was passed on 17 July 1913, formalising the Club name of Mordialloc Golf Club, and limiting its membership to fifty. An early Melbourne professional, Rowley Banks, was contacted to lay out nine holes in readiness for Opening Day on 6 September 1913.

Mayfield’s parkland environment included heavily-treed sections; fairways comprised of various natural grass species and were sufficiently uneven to require constant rolling.

Cattle and sheep grazed over Mayfield, wreaking havoc to its fairways and greens. Caddies spent much of their time diverting sheep away from the manure-scented greens before wire fences were erected.

The initial agreement with trustees prohibited traditional sand bunkers. Instead, one-metre high wire-netting hurdles were erected and positioned across the fairways.

By 1917, the Club was anxious to upgrade its layout to 18 holes. Club professional, Sam Bennett, laid out the new nine within a month.

A BriEF HiSTOry

In 1921, the Club became serious about its bunkering and enlisted the advice of one Mr Plant, who had developed a reputation as a bunker expert. The planting of hundreds of native trees also took place in this landmark year.

When Mordialloc Golf Club became a company in 1925, the Club embraced the opportunity for a name change. One early suggestion – “Braeburn” – gathered much support among the membership, but “Woodlands” – giving due acknowledgement to its parkland setting – was adopted.

In the mid-1920s English golf architect, J.D.H. Scott, came to Australia and his advice was sought regarding course bunkering and the potential for some new holes.

Vigorous debate took place on how to best accommodate Woodlands’ expanding membership. The issue, however, was settled by an act of God – a huge fire gutted the Clubhouse in February 1927. As it transpired, the estimated damage bill from the fire amounted to the same budgeted upgrade figure.

With the Clubhouse issue sorted, one of the most progressive steps in Woodlands’ short history occurred in 1929 – the year its fairways were ploughed up and sown with couch grass.

Woodlands Golf Club owes its existence to a schoolteacher, George rogers, who took a liking to the land where the course now lies during one visit to Epsom racecourse in 1912.

In 1933 representatives of the Fonseca Estate informed the Club they were prepared to sell it the land for 11,000 pounds (more than $2 million at today’s prices) – equating to nearly seventy pounds per acre. A sound offer, the Club agreed.

Being awarded the 1934 Victorian Amateur Championship was evidence of the esteem that the Woodlands layout was held in. To rise up in the relatively short time-span of 21 years from “golfing in the paddocks” to hosting the State Championship was a magnificent achievement. Today, Woodlands is one of Australia’s leading golf courses and, quite possibly, the most under-rated.

Befitting a course layout that demands concentration and an all-round game, many fine golfers have honed their skills at Woodlands and represented the Club with distinction at local, state and national competition.

The achievements of three members, however, dwarf all others, namely those of Margaret Masters, Stephen Allan and Nathan Holman.

Joining Woodlands as a junior, Masters won the first of nine Women’s championships in 12 years in 1952, aged just 19. Five Victorian Amateur Championships were annexed, along with the Australian, New Zealand, South African and Canadian Championships.

Masters was the first Australian woman to turn professional and compete in America, where she enjoyed considerable success. She lives in Arizona.

Diminutive in stature and coined The Baby Face Assassin by the press, Stephen Allan’s career highlight is victory in the 2002 Australian Open at Victoria Golf Club. He, too, proudly represented Woodlands in local pennant, played for Victoria and was twice Club Champion (1991 and 1994). Based in Arizona, Allan has been a regular member of the US Tour.

More recently, Holman turned professional after a stellar career as an amateur winning numerous events and representing Victoria and Australia as one of the world’s leading amateur golfers.

Woodlands has not only produced champions, it has hosted numerous championships, including the Victorian Open Championship eight times and the equivalent event for women twice. Three times running in recent years it has been a co-host of the Australian Amateur Championship. There have been some famous winners of these events too, such as Australia’s Robert Allenby and Lanny Wadkins, who went on to become a Major champion and represent the United States on eight occasions in the Ryder Cup.

THE COUrSEit has often been said that if you play well at Woodlands you can play anywhere, and there

are a great many who will attest to this assessment. Those who know the difference instantly appreciate the superb layout and design that gives Woodlands its own distinctive character.

Established in 1913 and the only course in Melbourne’s famous ‘Sandbelt’ still to occupy its original site, the vision of its founders has seen the creation of a timeless golfing classic. A unique blend of beguiling, elevated greens that are small, firm, and fast, married with several of what are unquestionably some of Australia’s most demanding short par 4s, creates a strategically demanding course that places a premium on shot selection and ball control. Acknowledged by touring professionals as among the finest courses in the country, Woodlands is in total harmony with its environment, where fairways are lined with 300-year-old River Red Gums and Coastal Manna Gums whose roots took hold long before Captain Cook walked upon our shores. Woodlands is indeed proud of its heritage. The meandering fairways and naturally shaped bunkers are much-admired features, with the influence of the legendary Scot, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, clearly apparent. Mick Morcom, former Course Curator at Royal Melbourne Golf Club and supervisor of its construction according to Dr. MacKenzie’s design, was engaged by Woodlands for many years to undertake numerous course refinements, including the bunkering. Today, the meticulously presented playing surface is a Woodlands trademark and stands as testament to the expertise and dedication of the course curators. A true championship course, Woodlands has played host to numerous professional tournaments in its long and distinguished history.

Importantly, Woodlands is committed to preserving and restoring the indigenous plant communities and ecology to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the landscape is in keeping with the original bush that existed when the Club was first established. A regenerative planting program with grasses, shrubs and trees propagated from remnant vegetation on the course is maintaining the area’s habitat. Many species of bird including kookaburras, rosellas, lorikeets, thornbills and the very rare grey crowned babbler inhabit the course, along with migrating waterfowl that can be seen nesting in the wet lands. As a result, Woodlands retains a wild, untamed quality not found in more manicured ‘parkland’ courses where, in certain cases, an emphasis on the introduction of specimen trees can produce a contrived, artificial setting. In every way, the course is a sanctuary from a fast-paced world of tension and change, providing the perfect haven in which to replenish your spirits. The layout has remained fairly constant since the late twenties, but there was a notable addition in 2013, a Centenary Hole, the 19th, to celebrate our 100th birthday. This par-3 was designed by Tom Doak, one of the leading course architects in the world and a long-time admirer of Woodlands Golf Club. The hole, being situated perfectly between the 16th and 17th holes, can be played from a number of different tees which makes it challenging at all levels.

Hole 1, 357 metres, par 4A testing dogleg to start the round. When playing this hole down breeze take an iron or 3-wood to leave a mid to short iron into a receptive green. Bigger hitters can take on the trees, or shape a right to left shot around the corner to create a genuine birdie opportunity.

Hole 2, 480 metres, par 5A good drive left of centre to avoid the fairway bunkering and out of bounds fence along the right-hand side will give longer hitters an opportunity to go for the green in two. A player of average length can play an iron or 3-wood for the second shot to leave a short iron into a small narrow green.

Hole 3, 300 metres, par 4Players of average length need to avoid a cluster of fairway bunkers on the right to leave a short iron to a small and well-bunkered green. Longer hitters can take on the corner to leave a short pitch and another birdie opportunity. Any shots that run through this green can leave a very difficult chip to a back to front sloping green.

Hole 4, 251 metres, par 4Position from the tee is paramount to allow any chance of attacking this narrow green. The green is reachable, but any shots left or right of pin high leaves a near impossible up and down. Ideal position from the tee is short right to leave a short pitch into a green protected by steep banking on either side.

Hole 5, 168 metres, par 3The strategic bunkering common to Melbourne’s Sandbelt is a feature of this hole. The difficult and narrow green is well protected which requires accuracy and astute club selection.

Hole 6, 511 metres, par 5A well-placed tee shot is just the beginning of successfully negotiating this strategically designed par 5. The left to right sloping fairway requires a drive down the left side to avoid running down toward the waiting bushland. The second shot can be placed down the left side to avoid the hummocks and thick rough, or longer hitters can attempt to carry the trouble and leave a short pitch into a left to right sloping green. Better to miss this green on the right to avoid difficult greenside bunkering on the left.

Hole 7, 341 metres, par 4An interesting but difficult medium length par 4. Players can attempt to shape a right to left shot from the tee around the corner, or play for the fairway with an iron or 3 wood. The reward for taking on the dogleg is a short iron into a very small target well protected by greenside bunkering in front and behind. Par is an excellent result here.

Hole 8, 197 metres, par 3A long but eminently fair par 3 which presents a classic combination of bunkering and undulation to a generous green. A miss short right can leave a manageable chip, anything left will surely find one of the large yawning bunkers that await.

Hole 9, 409 metres, par 4A slightly doglegged par 4 generally played into a westerly headwind. The tee shot must be down the left-hand side to open up the green for anything from a fairway wood to medium length iron. The large bunkers 20 metres short catch anything short, and anything right of the green runs away leaving a difficult up and down. Par is a good result here.

Hole 10, 400 metres, par 4This tough par 4 presents a challenging start to the back nine. A good straight drive can reach the top of the crest some 200 metres away. The approach must be accurate as there is thick woodland on both sides of the fairway, and heavy bunkering protecting the small green which slopes away from left to right. Cross bunkers 40 metres in front of the green catch anything short. The stretch of holes through the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th at Woodlands presents an excellent test of golf.

Hole 11, 139 metres, par 3The shortest of all par 3s at Woodlands. This small green is bordered on three sides by large bunkers and thick wiry rough at the back. A good opportunity to catch your breath after the previous stretch of demanding holes.

Hole 12, 349 metres, par 4A shortish par 4 of classic design, which rewards an accurate tee shot. The narrow fairway slopes away on the right-hand side catching any loose drives so anything down the left of centre is premium here. Anything too long and left can be caught by the fairway bunkering, so a 3 wood from the tee is a sensible option depending on the wind. The narrow green is well protected by deep bunkers either side, and a steep slope behind catches anything through the green.

Page 9: Woodlands Golf Club - 1913 - 2013 · 2015-12-24 · Pleasure Cruising Club Inc. 84 New Quay Promenade, Docklands, VIC, 3008 pleasurecruising.com.au Imagine entertaining guests on

16 | www.woodlandsgol f .com.au www.woodlandsgol f .com.au | 17

Hole 13, 295 metres, par 4This green is reachable for longer hitters, but the near impossible task of clearing the deep greenside bunkers and holding the narrow green reduces the benefit of taking this approach. A more strategic play is to position your ball short left of the green to provide an ideal angle into this narrow target. A definite birdie opportunity here if you play smart.

Hole 14, 379 metres, par 4A straight tee shot is needed down a very narrow fairway, bordered on either side by heavy scrub and trees. The approach must then thread its way past extensive and deep bunkering on either side of the entrance to a green considered generous in size by Woodlands’ standards.

Hole 15, 511 metres, par 5A monster from the back tees, a par is a great result even from the members’ tees on a par 5 fraught with danger from tee to green. A fearsome set of cross bunkers stretch across the fairway some 100 metres from the green, after negotiating these an elevated green protected by a deep greenside bunker on the left and steep slope on the right and behind awaits. This hole was rated by Tom Doak as one of the 18 best par-5 holes in the world.

Hole 16, 403 metres, par 4A difficult par 4 generally played into a prevailing wind. The ideal position for the tee shot is right of centre to create a better angle for approaching this green protected by a cluster of bunkers along the left-hand side.

Hole 17, 154 metres, par 3A receptive green but well protected on the right and in the front by a set of deep bunkers. Anything left finds a steep slope that runs into a deep gully or thick rough beyond this. Players who fail to find this green from the tee can struggle to make par.

Hole 18, 467 metres, par 5A realistic birdie opportunity to close out the round. A good drive can clear the crest of the hill and run down the slope, beware of the out of bounds fence along the right-hand side. Cross bunkers 100 metres from the green can be carried by longer hitters, otherwise leave yourself a short iron to a receptive green protected by relatively shallow bunkers on the left side.

PrACTiCE FACiLiTiES

There can be few things more frustrating than not doing oneself justice having been given the opportunity to play at one of Australia’s top golf courses.

Fortunately, if your golf game is not in quite the shape you would like, Woodlands has a very capable team of professionals who are on hand to offer instruction and advice.

Quality tuition, though, is nothing without the facilities to be able to work on newly-acquired skills and ingrain them so that they become second nature.

Fortunately, Woodlands is blessed with excellent practice facilities, as you might expect seeing the good golfers to have emerged from the Club over the years.

If you walk across the 1st and 9th fairway you will find the practice fairway, which is the perfect place to work on the long game. Buckets of balls may be hired from the Pro Shop.

A sharp short game is essential to score well around Woodlands and there is little better feeling in the game than consistently saving shots around the green that others fritter away.

A practice putting green can be found immediately in front of the Clubhouse adjacent to the 1st fairway whose surface mirrors the excellent quality of those to be found out on the course.

There is another green/bunker area adjacent to the 9th green and 10th tee and another putting/ chipping green at the northern end of the Clubhouse.

For those short of time there are also practice nets to have a quick hit before heading to the first tee.

BECOMiNG A MEMBErit is true we have a great course. it is also true that we have an even greater Club. One visit and you will appreciate why together they represent such a rare and alluring proposition.

Members are drawn as much by the genuine fellowship that envelops the Club - that essential element that complements the golfing experience - as they are the reputation of the course.

Having a good course, though, undoubtedly helps. Many of those lucky enough to have played here instantly gain an affection for the place - the beautifully manicured fairways, the feelings of being one with nature, it just feels a perfect fit.

This attraction does not dim over time and it is the people who share this affinity who we would welcome as potential new members.

To join Woodlands, a Proposer and Seconder are generally required, plus two referees, one of whom must be a member of the Club.

MEMBErS’ GOLFFor those in search of competitive golf, Woodlands represents an excellent choice of club, with league fixtures, many trophies to battle for each year in the Club’s own prestigious

competitions and much social golf on offer.

Men, women and colts (under-24) all have a full programme of golf and enter teams in their respective pennant competitions.

Pennant is the pinnacle of inter-club golf in Victoria, with a history stretching back more than a century. Teams enjoy competition across an eight-week season that starts in March and culminates in a grand final where the all-important pennant is the prize.

Woodlands has a proud history in Golf Victoria Metropolitan pennant competitions. The Club’s first GV Division 1 flag was won in 1979 then during the 1990s, Woodlands won GV Division 1 flags in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. Woodlands has also had success with our Under 24 Colts team, winning the Division 1 flag in 1997 and 2000. The Ladies have won Section 1 flags in 1962, 1988, 1990 and 1999 with 10 other flags in Sections 2-5.

Additionally, our Ladies also enter the Women’s Metropolitan Match Play, which is another inter-club team competition which began in 2009 with play taking place on Fridays.

Currently, our pennant teams are represented as follows:Men – Division 1 PennantMen – Division 2 Colts (Under 24)Women – Division 1 PennantWomen – Division 2 Metropolitan Matchplay

Within the Club itself there are a host of honours board competitions and prestigious trophies to be contested every year. These number far too many to list individually, but one glance at the honours boards in the Clubhouse or through the exhaustive details in the Club handbook will tell you that this is a golf club for golfers and rich in tradition.

Whether your favourite format is singles or pairs, strokeplay or matchplay, a one-day event to find the winner or a knockout competition running throughout the season you will find something to appeal at Woodlands. You do not need necessarily to be a scratch golfer, with a good selection of competitions run against handicap meaning that everyone has a chance to get their hands on some silverware.

The most important events for all sections of the Club - men, women, juniors and seniors - are their respective Club Championships. It is not an honour bestowed lightly nor earned cheaply. The men, for instance, initially compete over 54 holes with the aim of recording one of the top four scratch scores.

That, however, is only half the battle. An 18-hole semi-final and 36-hole final are the two remaining hurdles separating the Club Champion from his trophy.

Men’s competitions are played on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. A medal is traditionally played for on the first Saturday of the month with an annual event to determine the Medallist of the Year. Women’s competition days are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The golf is never dull and there always seems to be an innovative event on the horizon to look forward to. Such as the Woodlands Spring Valley Cup, where Woodlands conducts its daily competition at neighbouring Spring Valley Golf Club and vice versa.

A similar inter-club exchange takes place with Huntingdale and there is also a long-standing annual match against Kingswood. And woe betide the Woodlands Board should they come back empty-handed in their annual encounter with the Kingswood Committee that features ten-man teams including the respective General Managers!

Woodlands’ women members are a valued part of the Club, who as well as enjoying their own host of competitions have been tireless workers in raising money for charity with events such as a Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The women have their own dedicated and hard-working council to represent their interests and look after the day to day running of their section. The spread of ages is also something to behold, with talented juniors coming up through the ranks a source of inspiration to many, not least the nine female members who are in their sixth decade of calling Woodlands their home Club.

There is also much social golf on offer at Woodlands, with groups going out most days. After all, why wouldn’t you want to play our majestic course at every opportunity?

rECiPrOCAL GOLFWoodlands Golf Club has reciprocal relationships with a number of other

golf clubs in Victoria, across Australia and even overseas.

While most of our members would say they would rather play nowhere else than their home Club, sometimes business or pleasure may necessitate a trip away and playing another course might be appealing.

Agreements vary from club to club and should be arranged in advance through Woodlands. It is recommended that members check with the office prior to visiting a reciprocal club in relation to any special arrangements and regarding details of current participating clubs as the list is regularly updated.

JUNiOrS

if you are an aspiring junior golfer in search of a club and a course to match your ambitions look no further than Woodlands.

The Club has a proud history of developing junior golfers and many have moved up into the professional ranks, most notably Steve Allan, Nathan Holman and Brad Lamb and, some years before them, Margaret Masters, who was the first Australian woman to turn professional and compete in America, where she enjoyed considerable success. This tradition of Junior excellence continues right up to the present day with the likes of Nathan Holman, who before turning professional, captained Victoria and was the leading amateur at the 2013 Victoria Open and Julienne Soo, who won the San Diego Junior Masters in 2012, the same year as she triumphed at the Victorian Girls Championship after finishing runner-up the year before.Woodlands has a tried and tested structure in place to develop junior golfers. The Junior rookie Squad is designed for new juniors. Here they learn the different components of the golf game and improve their skills by playing games that are designed to make golf fun, simple and easy to remember. As they improve they progress to the Junior Development Squad.

The Junior development Squad program is designed to develop and grow the child’s golf skills and knowledge in a relaxed and fun environment. The objective of the program is to give the child the confidence they need to play on the golf course without supervision. The Junior Development Squad is for the more advanced juniors that play regularly on the golf course. The main focus is to improve their techniques with every area of the game: putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers and full swing. From here as their skills improve and reach a level where they can play on the course without supervision they will be encouraged to join as a Sub-Junior member. As a Sub-Junior once they demonstrate an understanding of the rules, etiquette (pace of play, care of the course and behaviour) they will be invited to apply as a Junior Member. For more details about our Junior program and becoming a Junior Member, call (03) 9580 1157 or pop into the Pro Shop.

Woodlands is a Club that exists for its members, but that does not preclude visitors from enjoying the ultimate golfing experience.

We are delighted to showcase our magnificent course to a wider audience and visitors are not only welcome to play at Woodlands, they are encouraged.

There are several ways you can play Woodlands as a non-member. Two of these are as an invitee to one of our corporate golf days or as the invited guest of a member.

Membership brings with it many privileges, one of which is to be able to invite others to play the course, the same person no more than six times in the same financial year.

So a friend who belongs to Woodlands Golf Club is a good friend indeed and someone whose acquaintance you should treasure!

The third way is by introduction. Guests upon written application to the General Manager, specifying club membership and golf handicap, have the opportunity to play at Woodlands Golf Club.

These are the days when visitors are permitted, all are subject to availability of the course:

monday - afternoonTuesday - all dayWednesday - afternoonThursday - morningfriday - all dayWeekends and Public Holidays - all day

The formal dining room, which seats up to 300 people, exudes the style and elegance that has made it a venue of choice for weddings and other functions. Woodlands is approximately 40 minutes’ drive southeast from the Melbourne CBD.Membership of Woodlands Golf Club is about so much more than being able to enjoy daily play on one of Australia’s most visually stunning golf courses.

There is a special rapport among the members that can be felt as soon as you enter the Clubhouse and the après-golf experience is treasured almost as much as the playing of the 18 holes that precedes it.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to most tastes.

The Club is typically one that schedules a range of social functions with some of the feature events including

the Children’s Christmas Party held on the 18th hole that attracts nearly 200 children plus parents and grandparents.

From late spring until early autumn there is a program of events know as 9 & Dines in which members and guests play nine holes before enjoying a casual dinner.

Other events to have featured in the social calendar have included a wine dinner with accompanying five-course meal, night golf followed by a meal and entertainment, and a rock and roll night.
