Welcome to the July issue of 3008Docklands. While this is the fi rst of our 3008 inserts to feature within 3000Melbourne Magazine, the inserts will continue to rotate between Docklands, South Melbourne and Port Melbourne each month as part of our post code strategy in bringing your neighbours closer.

Despite this, in every monthly issue, Docklands will remain a prominent focus of our editorial and events and our distribution into Docklands will not change, but in fact will increase to 14,000 copies to incorporate distribution to the CBD and surrounds.

This is again a good opportunity to reassure our readers that just because our hero magazine has changed names, we have not changed our commitment or focus from Docklands.

To reiterate my Editor’s Note in the June issue, we are not turning away from Docklands but to the contrary, after 6 years we believe through our research that the best way to promote the area and drive visitors and business into the precinct is to work towards promoting Docklands as an integral part of Melbourne, which it is, and dissolving

the mental barriers that exist in the minds of some regarding Docklands.

I hope you’ll enjoy this July issue of 3008Docklands, take the opportunity to read through and discover the plenitude of information, there should be something for everyone, whether fi nding out more about the front runners in the upcoming by-election and what their views are for Docklands or whether it is discovering the jewel situated right in the heart of Docklands – the amazing and spectacular Wonderland Spiegeltent. Akmal Salah is a favourite on the stand up comedy scene and this July you have the opportunity to see why, if you haven’t before, tickets are selling fast!

As always, there is so much happening with Docklands developments read more on pages 4 and 7.

Feel free to let us know your thoughts, comments or ideas, Docklands is where our heart is.

Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell announced on June 22nd that $400,000 in Victorian Coalition Government funding would be committed towards the new Docklands Library and Community Centre to be located at Dock Square.

“The Coalition Government continues to develop and renew our much loved and popular public library network through the $17.2 million Living Libraries Infrastructure Program,” Mrs Powell said.

“I’m delighted that the Coalition Government is contributing to the development of the new Docklands Library and Community Centre in this vibrant, growing part of Melbourne. Public libraries are at the heart of many communities and this new facility will provide a wide range of services and a welcoming community space for Docklands’ residents and visitors,” Mrs Powell said .

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle thanked the Coalition Government for their investment in the Docklands Library and Community Centre through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

“We are pleased to be bringing Melbourne’s unique sense of community to Docklands through

imaginative, well-designed places for this ever-changing precinct,” Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said.

“While our fi nancial investment is signifi cant, equally important is our commitment to meaningful engagement and partnerships in Docklands. The Docklands Library and Community Centre is a great example of this partnership,” Mr Doyle said.

Works are scheduled to commence on the new Docklands Library and Community Centre this July. The facility will feature a variety of library spaces including children, youth, seniors, multimedia, music/media, fl exible activity space, community meeting rooms and an entertainment hub.

Situated over three levels and 2,900 square metres, it is expected this exciting new

facility will be completed in October 2013. The overall facility will cost around $20 million which also includes signifi cant contributions from Melbourne City Council, developer Lend Lease and Places Victoria.

Docklands has such a varied and vivid past, from rich culture and indigenous history to the origins of Melbourne as a city. The industrious and sometimes dark side of the working docks to the modern day capital for many of our nation’s leading fi nancial headquarters as well as the prestigious and highly sought after waterfront as a residential location.

As a passionate supporter of the Docklands Precinct and believer that Docklands is where the future lies as our major inner city residential and tourist destination, I was thrilled upon hearing that Wonderland Fun Park was behind an impetus that would draw even more attention to this unique and forefront aspect of our city.

Anyone with children under the age of 15 would probably be aware that one of the premier locations for school holiday and weekend family friendly entertainment is Wonderland Fun Park (WFP) situated at Harbour Town Shopping Centre at Docklands with $5 all day parking conveniently located nearby.

Their regular school holiday Circus Spectaculars feature world class entertainment at extremely affordable entry prices with options to see the show included in with the purchase of an all day ride wristband at just $35 for all the amusements within this fully enclosed venue. As a parent that has frequented Wonderland Fun Park with

my own children on many occasions over the past few years and even hosting our daughter’s birthday party at this venue, it is honestly hard to fi nd better value and quality entertainment in as safe and central a location as WFP.

I recently attended the Docklands Chamber of Commerce monthly networking event on June 13th that was generously hosted by the wonderful WFP Director’s Melissa and Colin in the opulent and historic Wonderland Spiegeltent. In true spectacular style, guests were greeted by fully clad Burlesque beauties welcoming us into the warmth of the Spigeltent where guests mingled and enjoyed quality entertainment as U.K comedian Jeff Green rounded up the laughs afore international level circus arts performer, Elise enthralled the audience with her incredible Tissu performance.

This venue is without a doubt, one of the absolute best and most engaging venues suited for all applications, whether a corporate function, school holiday circus spectacular, private parties and functions or musical events and world class comedic entertainment as is scheduled on the bill for June and July.

While members and guests at the June Docklands Chamber of Commerce meeting were fortunate to gain a prelude to Jeff Green’s sold out show, there is still time to experience the grandeur of the Wonderland Spiegeltent as tickets for local and international stand up

comedian Akmal Saleh performs one show only on Saturday 14th of July.

Get in quick, you don’t want to miss a night of complete hilarity as Wonderland Spigeltent presents Akmal, world class comedy Rockin the House, and special guests.

Believe it or not we are now offi cially in the second half of the year and before long the festive season will once again be upon us. Now is the time to get in early to secure your end of year corporate offi ce party in the Wonderland Spiegeltent. Private function bookings are available as well as exclusive park hire – now that sounds like the end of year offi ce party people will be talking about for all the right reasons!

For bookings to see Akmal Saleh on Saturday 14th of July or for end of year corporate function bookings please call 9602 1311 or email [email protected] and let Melissa know 3008Docklands sent you. DOCKLANDS COMMUNITY GARDEN OPEN DAYMelbourne’s love of bringing life to hidden spaces will sprout in Docklands with the opening of its Community Garden on Sunday 15 July, from 11am-2pm

The Docklands Community Garden, cosily tucked away on Geographe Street near the NAB building, is now full of citrus trees,

This green space will mean that Docklands workers, residents and visitors have somewhere to potter around and even if they’re not into gardening, it’s a great place to chill out and meet up with friends.

Get down to the launch event at the garden this July, the morning will start with cooking and gardening workshops with special guest Vasili from Channel 31’s Vasili’s Garden, as well as live music, street theatre performers, and local food - all in a stone’s throw from the city’s waterfront.Entry to the event is free.

When: Sunday 15 July from 11am – 2pm

Lend Lease unlocked a new era for the construction industry by introducing a more effi cient and environmentally-friendly construction process that has not been undertaken in Australia before.

Already proven successful in Europe for more than a decade, the company will build the fi rst high rise apartment building in Australia and the tallest in the world using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT).

By using CLT, the project, Forté, will reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes when compared to concrete and steel – the equivalent of removing 345 cars from our roads. CLT is an engineered mass timber product and very different to a traditional wood frame.

Mass timber - dense solid panels of wood engineered for strength through

laminations of different layers – provides signifi cant benefi ts and has the equivalent structural integrity to concrete. CLT on a weight to strength basis meets, and in some cases exceed, the performance of reinforced concrete, resulting in a very stable and durable structural outcome. Designed and produced in a factory environment means it will also be built 30 percent faster than its material counterparts, while being cleaner and more effi cient.

Chief Executive Offi cer for Lend Lease’s Australian business, Mark Menhinnitt said CLT is the most signifi cant form of innovation in construction technology that Australia has seen in many years.

“CLT will transform the construction industry by introducing a more effi cient and environmentally friendly

construction process that has never been undertaken in Australia before.

“In 2001, we introduced the innovation of chilled beam technology to the Australian market which has now become the industry norm. CLT is another example of how Lend Lease is leading the way with innovations that will create value for consumers in the industry. With an increasing number of people moving to urban areas, this innovation is timely given the urgency to create liveable, sustainable cities that are climate positive. The adoption of green technologies, materials and construction processes, like CLT, means we are closer to achieving this,” said Mr Menhinnitt.

Aspiring to be the fi rst 5 Star Green Star As Built residential building in the country, Forté in Victoria Harbour, will rise over 10 storey’s, offering 23 boutique residential apartments and 4 townhouses.

Designed and built by Lend Lease, the building will refl ect the contemporary inner-city lifestyle of Victoria Harbour while combining environmental initiatives such as better energy effi ciency in terms of heating and cooling.

Following on from Forté in Victoria Harbour, due for completion in

October 2012, the company is aiming to develop 30-50 per cent of its apartment pipeline using CLT and sees application elsewhere across the Lend Lease Group.

Docklands is an integral part of the Melbourne community. It is increasingly important to our city life, especially as we see further housing and businesses move into the area.

Something that is crucial to building strong communities is education, and the Baillieu Government has not treated the education sector well.

There have been record cuts to TAFE and education funding, which will make it harder for people to retrain and for young people to access education.

On a school in Docklands, like many areas, I am disappointed with the Baillieu Government and their lack of action in regards to progressing this matter.

A report should have been given to the Baillieu Government in April and has not been released. It is time the report was released, so that the community can have their say.

But we can all push to make things better, and on council I worked on ensuring that there will be a library for Docklands. This money has been set aside by Council and I look forward to the Docklands library being opened and contributing to education in the area.

Another important driver of a strong community is to get the planning right, especially for a precinct like Docklands that continues to evolve and grow.

A real concern for Docklands is the lack of provision of parks and green recreation spaces. There is lots of open space, but not the space that fi ts with Victoria’s reputation as the Garden State. I know, as you do, that we need these community spaces in the Docklands.

This election you will be able to send a clear and direct message to the Baillieu Government that this community values education and that you want a well planned and connected city, with the community consulted.

You have this opportunity to send this message on Saturday 21 July, knowing that only Labor can offer a genuine alternative to the Baillieu Government.

One of the most pressing issues I hear from Docklands residents is their need for a greater sense of community and for this to be refl ected in integrated planning and investment.

For too long Docklands has been a blind

spot in the priorities for Melbourne’s decision makers and when it has had the attention of planners there has been too much buck passing. I would make Docklands a priority and advocate for the needs of residents and business.

I’m concerned by the tendency to talk Docklands down. I believe we can seek improvements while highlighting the many wonderful opportunities living, working, visiting and doing business in the area bring.

Focusing on the positive is crucial to Docklands’ social and economic future because it encourages business investment, a commitment to long term residents and an increase in visitors.

We also need to overcome some of the challenges

facing new and future Docklands residents. The new Library and Community Centre is welcome and long overdue but we need investment in a school, more childcare, a diverse range of housing, more active open space, as well as some basic infrastructure like TV reception. The Federal Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt has made some in roads on television reception with real improvements expected soon.

The problem of unplanned service apartments for example has an impact on long-term residents which ultimately hurts the long-term economic future of Docklands. I want to see proper regulation.

The recent marina fi re in Docklands highlighted the specifi c needs of the Docklands community and refl ects the lack of planning for waterside fi res. It is unacceptable that the government has still not acted to ensure our fi re fi ghters have the equipment they need to protect Docklands.

Ultimately it is about making Docklands more liveable and affordable and this requires better integration of planning and infrastructure investment. I would like to see the City of Melbourne playing a bigger role again.

By voting Greens on 21 July you can be sure Docklands will have a fi erce advocate willing to fi ght for your community.www.cathyoke.com

Programs Manager at Medibank Icehouse, Dani Romeo is an eight time Victorian fi gure skating champion;

she has represented Victoria seven times at National Championships and has also represented Australia in her sport. Now, she can also list the U.S Tour of Disney on Ice to her list of accolades as her lifelong dream becomes a reality. 3008Docklands was fortunate to catch a moment before Dani embarked on her international skating and career altering adventure.

How did this incredible opportunity to skate in the US Disney on Ice Tour come about?

I retired from competitive skating a few years ago to travel and upon my return I was offered a position at Medibank Icehouse. Working in the facility inspired me to get back into my training and pursue my childhood dream.

In April I fi lmed my audition video, I then sent a YouTube link to Disney On Ice hoping to line up an audition when they come to Australia in July. Within a week of sending my application in they offered me a position without a live audition. I couldn’t believe it when I read the email, that I had actually been accepted, I was

so excited I almost started crying. It is an incredible feeling when all your hard work and years of training fi nally pay off.

How long will the tour run and is this something you have always dreamed of doing as an eight time Victorian fi gure skating champion?

I have been skating for 17 years and to perform with Disney on Ice has been a dream of mine since i was 7 years old. I will be on tour for approximately 11months at this stage and hopefully if I perform well, I will be offered another contract to continue my career. I just left Melbourne at the end of June for Mexico where I will begin rehearsals and the fi rst tour. I will come home in August for a 2 week break before starting the tour of the U.S, which will conclude in May of 2013.

Do you have an allocated part in the show already?

I have been accepted as a member of the ensemble cast and a potential understudy. I will have an opportunity during rehearsals to audition for an understudy role. This is my fi rst show

I am very excited to start building my professional experience.

How long have you been Programs Manager at the Icehouse and what has your role involved to date?

I started working as the Programs Co-ordinator in July 2011 and after less than a month I moved into the Programs Manager position which I worked in for the last 9months. As the Programs Manager I was responsible for the management, organisation and development of the Skate School, Hockey School and Figure Skating Academy Programs. Medibank Icehouse offers a range of classes from beginner to advanced levels and I really enjoyed being able to share my knowledge and love of skating with all the skaters. Being involved in running programs that will help develop our skaters of the future was really rewarding. I wish we had such an amazing facility when I was competing, being able to train 7days a week on Olympic size ice was something that was never possible here in Victoria until the Icehouse was built. It has really helped me in achieving my dream.

On Thursday the 7th of June, Melbourne based designer Matcho Suba launched his latest collection Chernobyl 013 Spring / Summer 2013 to more than 200 thrilled guests comprising of celebrities, designers, media and Olympians showing their support for the emerging designer at the Woolshed Pub, Central Pier at Docklands.

The fashion elite and glitterati were out in force to enjoy the excitement and ambience of the launch including TV and ex-model Charlotte Dawson, one half of the cult brand Alpha 60’s Alex Cleary, Olympian Matt Targett and season three Project Runway Australia winner Dylan Cooper. Much to the delight of all in attendance, the event lived up to the hype presenting the new collection in a show-stopping performance of extravagance. Antique luggage, vintage books and children’s toys were among the props used as a bone-chilling music score set the tone.

Matcho Suba designed Chernobyl 013 after being inspired by the 1986 nuclear accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. The collection featured the use of varying forms of fabrics and material manipulation including pleather, lace, fringing, jersey, gold pearls, cotton and PVC. The pattern cutting was asymmetrical in design and channeled body deformation as the theme. The use of pleather, jersey and fringing symbolised structure and movement. Elements fused together, the garments represented a human body that was proportionally incorrect. Matcho recalled how the concept for the collection was designed not to be disrespectful to the Chernobyl tragedy but to creatively manifest the human scale of the disaster, using prosthetic legs, doll arms and heads and gold chains to bring the collection to life.

“I grew up on the border of Ukraine, very close to Chernobyl so this disaster

is close to my heart. The collection is a tribute to the countless civilians who had to fl ee their homes as a result of the nuclear disaster, only taking with them their memories of a past life. Chernobyl 013 is a picture book of my emotions and a different take on what I saw,” said Mr Suba.

“I create beauty from items that aren’t conventionally seen as beautiful. Through experimentation, I mix seemingly controversial materials to create unexpected garments and add a little shock value to each of my collections along the way.”

Chernobyl 013 is the stepping-stone to a highly anticipated career. The launch of this collection aims to draw the attention of investors and boutique

stockists, with an online store due to be launched later this year.

For more information on Matcho Suba and his inspirations behind his Chernobyl 013 collection visit www.matchosuba.com or call 0404 432 382.

Leading Melbourne-based property developer, MAB Corporation, has announced a new $250 million, circa 35,000 square metre, commercial development which will bring a further 3,500 offi ce workers to NewQuay at Docklands.

Occupying an entire block on Docklands Drive, the development - The Quarter - will comprise four buildings of between 6,000 and 11,000 square metres on individually shaped allotments separated by interconnecting laneways.

Designed by the architectural fi rm Hassell, the environmentally sustainable buildings have been planned to achieve a 5 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS rating.

MAB’s General Manager Commercial and Industrial, Richard Johnston said the new development was unique in that it provided an opportunity that some organisations would not have considered possible at Docklands.

“The Quarter provides an opportunity for tenants from 4,000 square metres to pre-commit and launch a new building, designed to an organisation’s exact specifi cations, right on the doorstep of Melbourne’s CBD with the additional advantage of exclusive naming rights.

“It’s a highly fl exible arrangement to suit the tenant’s requirements and, importantly, one that can be delivered within a 15 month timeframe,’’ Mr Johnston said.

He said the project masterplan had taken inspiration from Melbourne’s laneways and would include an intimate central piazza, similar in scale to Madame Brussels lane, designed to deliver CBD amenity to staff and a vibrant heart to NewQuay.

“This area will fast become a highly visible and active community space which will be easily accessible via pedestrian friendly laneways,’’ Mr Johnston said.

The central piazza will be completed in stage one and will be the major focal point of the development featuring small retail spaces that will accommodate cafes, fashion and specialty retailers, landscaping, fi xed seating and public art.

Mr Johnston said he was delighted to announce that renowned café operator Cafenatics was already confi rmed in the development. Spokesman for leasing agents, Savills Australia’s Head of Division, Offi ce Leasing, Victoria, Nicholas Farley, said pre-marketing had revealed strong interest from a wide variety of organisations including those in the education, IT, energy and engineering sectors.

“We have spoken to several prospective tenants including those currently based in Melbourne’s CBD, city fringe, and suburbs as well as interstate operations, which have all been impressed by the CBD fringe location, the abundance of quality amenities, the public transport links, the close proximity to freeway access, and of course the superior parking availability,” Mr Farley said.

Mr Farley said the fi rst stage of the development would comprise an 8,500 square metre building suitable for one or two tenants looking for a 4,000 to 8,000 square metre space, with the added ability to cater for future expansion.

He said the highly effi cient construction timeline - the fi rst stage is likely to be completed within 15 months - was also attractive to organisations planning a move in the near future.
