stirring music by members of the Washington Symphony Orchestra the Commercial Club had a most enjoyable evening last night at its quarters In Jackson place Senator Gor- don was the guest or the club absence of the chairman ot the house committee and he delegated that task to Col nan die who had extended the Invitation of the club to Senator Gordon Talks on Corporations Handle said Corporations are tho axles upon the wheels of progress turn and too much hammering on that axle will make it hot and the wheel will stop and a panic will be the result Ninetyfive cent of the volume of done in this country is done by corporations in which widows and or- phans money is Invested so the great octopus represented In the foreground with horns followed to the background will find the widows and orphans keep ing their preside bright and their homes cheerful dividends received from in- vestments In corporations There has been so much said against corporations that the prejudice la so groat that I believe Itds time for the government to stop and ponder I heard an eminent statesman say not long ago that the feeling against cor- porations so intense among the un thinking mass that only good crops stand between wa and communism There Is no doubt that if we had hard times such as we had in St when the poor were compelled to go to soup houses to secure food then indeed the great prejudice aroused in the hearts of the masses against corporations would be dangerous to the extreme PiIe of 011 Moderate When I was a boy the poor laboring man could hardly spare enough of his earnings to buy oil to light his humble home Today by Rockefellers organiza- tion the laboring man can not only light his home but can cook and heat that home owing to the moderate price of oil Mr Rockefeller has been in this respect the working mans greatest benefactor Senator Gordon being introduced after reference was made to his defense of cor- porations in the Senate told the members- of the club that his speech was merely an accident brought out from a feeling heart when subjects akin to It were under dis cussion If it cut across the popular Idea of corporations he said he could not help it Senator Gordon Speaks Senator Gordon said he was by descent- a Scotchman and a Presbyterian He loved truth and was bound to tell It al ways and everywhere The greater part of Senator Gordons speech was a re- hearsal of how ho bad passed from in herited millions to poverty back again to comfortable affluence into politics and to the United States Senate It was a most interesting story enlivened by keen humor and many homely touches of pathos that hold his audience spellbound The address was a vivid picture of life In Mississippi among the common people with their peculiar struggles and prob lems It was a recital that will be long remembered The picture of a man In advanced life losing all driven to the stern necessity to work and meeting the Issue with courage optimism and sue a speech from Senator JamesGordon which deeply moved his auditorswith a short talk on by

E and with stirring musicby members of the Washington SymphonyOrchestra the Commercial Club had amost enjoyable evening last night at itsquarters In Jackson place Senator Gor-

don was the guest or the club at dinnerand the speechmakIng and music woreaccessories during the latter part of theevening In the assembly room A largenumber of the members of the club werepresent

The avanJnB programme was In theeapablo hands of a committee composedof C Patterson Fred S Lincolnand E C Graham

President E C Graham said that It wasa little out of his province to Introducethe speaker of the evening In the absenceof the chairman ot the house committeeand he delegated that task to Col nandie who had extended the Invitationof the club to Senator Gordon

Talks on CorporationsHandle said

Corporations are tho axles uponthe wheels of progress turn and toomuch hammering on that axle will makeit hot and the wheel will stop and apanic will be the result

Ninetyfive cent of the volume ofdone in this country is done by

corporations in which widows and or-

phans money is Invested so the greatoctopus represented In the foregroundwith horns followed to the backgroundwill find the widows and orphans keeping their preside bright and their homescheerful dividends received from in-

vestments In corporations There hasbeen so much said against corporationsthat the prejudice la so groat that Ibelieve Itds time for the government tostop and ponder

I heard an eminent statesman say notlong ago that the feeling against cor-

porations so intense among the unthinking mass that only good crops standbetween wa and communism There Isno doubt that if we had hard times suchas we had in St when the poor werecompelled to go to soup houses to securefood then indeed the great prejudicearoused in the hearts of the massesagainst corporations would be dangerousto the extreme

PiIe of 011 ModerateWhen I was a boy the poor laboring

man could hardly spare enough of hisearnings to buy oil to light his humblehome Today by Rockefellers organiza-tion the laboring man can not only lighthis home but can cook and heat thathome owing to the moderate price of oilMr Rockefeller has been in this respectthe working mans greatest benefactor

Senator Gordon being introduced afterreference was made to his defense of cor-

porations in the Senate told the members-of the club that his speech was merely anaccident brought out from a feeling heartwhen subjects akin to It were under discussion If it cut across the popular Ideaof corporations he said he could nothelp it

Senator Gordon SpeaksSenator Gordon said he was by descent-

a Scotchman and a Presbyterian Heloved truth and was bound to tell It always and everywhere The greater partof Senator Gordons speech was a re-hearsal of how ho bad passed from inherited millions to poverty back againto comfortable affluence into politics andto the United States Senate It was amost interesting story enlivened by keenhumor and many homely touches ofpathos that hold his audience spellboundThe address was a vivid picture of life InMississippi among the common peoplewith their peculiar struggles and problems It was a recital that will be longremembered The picture of a man Inadvanced life losing all driven to thestern necessity to work and meeting theIssue with courage optimism and sue
