Eric Wibbels on the ECOLET

In this green, rustic park setting at the center of campus, it seems that the absence of technology and the classroom’s routine most affects our students while they are in the ECOLET. Imagination and curiosity take over and a new world filled with colorful and fragrant plants, native birds, and butterflies comes alive.”

Eric Wibbels is the Supervisor of the ECOLET and Campus Operations.

l AST SEPTEMBER I led the ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Paul Family Athletic Center on the first day of school. Before I began my remarks, I paused

for a few seconds and looked out at the huge gathering of students, teachers, parents, and trustees energized to start the year, and marveled at our new academic and athletic facilities. They were the result of years of planning, countless meetings, dedication, generosity, and hard work.

After the faculty and students settled into their new classrooms, we invited parents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends to enjoy the dynamic facilities for themselves. We gathered at our Community Celebration on October 29, 2011. More than 150 students were our tour guides demonstrating their work in our new facilities: robotics, Mandarin Chinese, film production, computer programming, photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing, biology experiments, dance, vocal jazz, poetry, mock trial debates, SMART Board projects, a string quartet performance, and the inaugural fine arts exhibition in the Malcolm Family Art Gallery. Dworkoski Family Hall was a living museum highlighting the essence of Viewpoint’s education!

During the formal program, Viewpoint trustee, parent, and alumni parent Dirk Gates spoke about his first visit to Viewpoint’s campus in 1995. At the time, our campus was notably different. We were on seven acres rather than the 25 we have today. While touring the classrooms, he and his wife Tina quickly discovered the magic of Viewpoint School. Dirk observed, “The teachers and staff were gifted at providing an inspiring education to children. With the growth of the campus, none of Viewpoint’s original magic has disappeared. It has continued to grow along with the construction of outstanding academic facilities.” Viewpoint’s Board of Trustees and many others had successfully designed and implemented a strategic vision with careful thought and fiscal restraint.

Our success is because of you. Viewpoint has an extraordinary legacy of generosity, passion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The strength of our community makes everything possible, and will continue to do so.

With gratitude,

Robert J. Dworkoski, Ph.D.Headmaster

The following pages of this Annual Report not only highlight our state-of-the-art facilities and beautiful campus, but also the voices of our faculty whose reflections capture the essence of how teachers bring learning to life. The core of what we do is to instill a love of learning in our 1,206 students.

Each day is an adventure in the Lower School’s newly remodeled Science Lab. As a Viewpoint alumna who studied science in this very classroom, it is gratifying to see our eager students exploring the wonders of science with all the latest technology and equipment. The transformation has made it a center for an exciting, hands-on science curriculum where experimentation is stimulating and learning is fun!”

TogeTher We are More!

With the completion of Viewpoint’s latest phase of the Master Plan, and three of our four Divisions settled into new locations, the start of the 2011-12 school year brought great anticipation and celebration to our community. The new Middle and Upper School facilities underscore the remarkable foresight and determination of the Board of Trustees to provide a fully developed and integrated state-of-the art campus. Here are just a few of the highlights of 2011-12 at Viewpoint:

• California Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Independent Schools awarded Viewpoint with the highest level of reaccreditation and a maximum six-year term of renewal.

• 19% of the Class of 2012 earned National Merit recognition.

• The School’s chapter of the prestigious Cum Laude Society welcomed 22 new members in April ceremonies. The Cum Laude Society is modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society for college graduates, and recognizes superior scholarship in select high schools in the United States. Viewpoint has been a member since 1992 and is one of only 33 schools in the state to have earned the distinction of having a Cum Laude chapter on campus.

• The Upper School’s Robotics Team won their fourth consecutive Los Angeles Regional Robodox Championship and their second Golden State Championship.

• In 2007 Viewpoint became one of the first schools in the United States to offer The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program to our Upper School students. The program completed its sixth year at Viewpoint and presented 24 Gold Awards, 57 Silver Awards, and 65 Bronze Awards. The British Royal Family established this program in 1956 to recognize and honor young people for achievement in the following areas: service to others, adventurous journey, practical or vocational life skills, and physical recreation.

• One Viewpoint senior earned recognition as a United States Presidential Scholar semifinalist, joining a select, prestigious group of scholars and artists. The awards are based on outstanding grades and SAT and ACT scores.

• The record-breaking 2011-12 Annual Fund clearly illustrates our theme, “Together We Are More.” Thanks to all those who said “yes” when called upon, the Annual Fund achieved 93% participation by our parents and raised the greatest amount in any single year in the history of our School — $1,708,799. 100% of our faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees gave to the Annual Fund in support of our students.

• New additions:• Spanish Language study joined French for all Kindergarten students

and subsequent grades• Singapore Math, a system which promotes a deeper understanding

of math concepts, is now utilized throughout both Primary and Lower Schools

• A fourth full-time counselor joined the College Counseling Office to provide even greater attention to our students and their families

• An enhanced Middle School advisory program includes a full-time educational counselor

• Yoga is now a Physical Education course in the Upper School

Jennifer Kirchmann on the Middle and Upper Schools’ Art Studios

A sense of space, both physical and mental, encourages each student to fully explore all aspects of creativity in our new art studios. Although still connected to the bustling energy of academic learning, the studios provide an oasis where students can slow down and observe their artistic subjects at hand. Beautiful things happen when boundaries dissolve during the creative process.”

l AST JUNE I SAT UNDER THE TENT on Ring Family Field and proudly watched as my daughter and the Class of 2012 walked across the stage, received their

diplomas, and shook Dr. Dworkoski’s hand one final time. I reflected on how our campus has changed so dramatically over the last 13 years, and what made me smile the most was celebrating what hasn’t changed, what gives Viewpoint its heart and soul: the enduring strength and commitment of Viewpoint’s community.

During the 2011-12 school year, our community came together to celebrate what we have worked so hard to build: the Dworkoski Family Hall, the Paul Family Athletic Center, and the competition pool. We dedicated the “Love of Learning Wall” to thank all who gave so generously. We came together and rolled up our sleeves in support of Viewpoint’s Benefit and the Annual Fund. Throughout the year, we accomplished so much due to the dedicated and passionate work of our team of administrators, faculty, staff, volunteers, and trustees. Thank you one and all!

As my term as Board Chair concludes, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the work of our Committee Chairs. Each has served as a source of inspiration to me and our community, and I thank you for your service and all that you and your committees have contributed: Mr. Tom Boone, Chair of Finance; Mr. Mike Murphy, Chair of Buildings and Grounds; Mr. John Nadolenco, Chair of Strategic Planning; Ms. Kathryn Moseley, Chair of Committee on Trustees; and Mrs. Halé Behzadi, Chair of Advancement.

Our Board is strengthened by seasoned trustees, as well as by the regular infusion of new trustees with a fresh perspective and professional talents. This past year, three dedicated trustees retired from the Board: Mr. David Franz, Mr. Bill Malcolm, and Mr. Kevin Slattery. Thank you for your leadership and contributions to Viewpoint School. We also welcomed Mrs. Lyn De Logi, Mrs. Shelly Sumpter Gillyard, and Mr. Jeffrey Stibel as new trustees. Finally, I know the Board’s excellent work will continue under the leadership and guidance of incoming Board Chair, Mr. Joe Carieri. Joe has served countless hours supporting Viewpoint’s mission as an Annual Fund volunteer, past Capital Campaign Co-Chair, and most recently as the Board’s Vice Chair. He is a thoughtful leader who will serve Viewpoint exceptionally well.

In the following pages you will read about another outstanding year at Viewpoint. As we reflect upon our successes and the milestones we achieved, we are most proud of our students – they are happy and engaged as they excel in their academics, athletics, and the arts.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Meghan Handy Chair, Board of Trustees

lyn de logi

l YN DE LOGI APPROACHES LIFE like a gourmet with a great menu to

sample. With husband Walter and daughter Chloe ’16, she enjoys a life filled with intellectual inquiry, travel, philanthropy, design, and the spice of adventure.

After a short visit at University of Minnesota, Lyn pursued many different careers. Starting with commercial modeling at the age of 12, writing a fashion column for several different publications, conducting interviews for National Geographic, selling real estate, and creating a fashion line, she then ventured into her own interior design company.

As a parent and new member of the Board of Trustees, she is overjoyed by the

opportunities Viewpoint’s students have to travel abroad in school-sponsored trips. “I think it is so great that our students participate in travel overseas. We have traveled with Chloe to China, but for her to take a trip with a group of classmates and to have a cultural exchange with Chinese students is a completely different experience. Seeing it through the eyes of her peers is going to give her a lens she did not have before travelling with us.”

Lyn’s dedication to helping others has grown exponentially over the past decade. Today Lyn serves on the boards of educational, cultural, and philanthropic organizations. She is especially proud to be a member of the Board of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, an institution that serves as a catalyst for the creative expression of artists. The Center

takes a global, multi-disciplinary approach to the creation, presentation, interpretation, collection, and preservation of art. At Viewpoint, Lyn is drawn to the art studios and Malcolm Family Art Gallery in Dworkoski Family Hall, where she is excited to engage with students and faculty to learn more about their projects.

Lyn says, “It does not stop. There is so much need to help. I don’t know if I will have time enough to do all the things that I feel a desire to do.” From her careers in interior design, the travel industry, and the real estate business, she stretches herself to see what is around the next corner of her life. Viewpoint is lucky that on her journey she has found her way here, where her passion for global cultures, art, and helping others brightens the lives of our students.

Jeffrey sTibel

J EFF STIBEL TELLS THE STORY that when he and his wife Cheryl

were applying to schools for their son they submitted one application and said to each other, “It’s Viewpoint or bust!” When they stumbled upon Viewpoint, they felt it had a wonderful Huckleberry Finn-like quality, removed from the typical urban setting of Los Angeles. Today, Jeff and Cheryl appreciate what the School provides, but most importantly the dedicated and dynamic faculty who instill a love of learning and emphasize character development and leadership. Even before starting Kindergarten, their son Lincoln was begging to go to Viewpoint’s summer science camp.

Both Jeff and Cheryl were Ph.D. candidates, and despite leaving academia, they continue to maintain strong ties to

their mentors. As Jeff puts it, “Educators are unsung heroes and often the true heroes behind the public heroes.” As an academic and scientist, Jeff has focused most of his career on brain science – the interdisciplinary study of psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience. He published several articles on the convergence of brain science, psychology, economics, and business. Jeff is the author of numerous academic and business articles, including the book Wired For Thought — How the Brain is Shaping the Future of the Internet (Harvard Business Press: 2009). He earned a BA in philosophy and psychology at Tufts University, and an MA in brain science at Brown University. He pursued his Ph.D. at Brown University, where he was the recipient of the Brain and Behavior Fellowship.

Currently, Jeff is Chairman and CEO for Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp.

As an entrepreneur, he helped start and grow a number of companies, including Web.com as President and CEO, and United Online, Inc. as General Manager. Prior to United Online, Jeff was founder and CEO of Simpli.com, now part of ValueClick, Inc. He currently sits on the boards of numerous companies, including The Search Agency, EdgeCast Networks, BrainGate, and Autobytel, as well as academic boards for Tufts and Brown Universities. Business Week listed Jeff as one of their “40 under 40.”

With all of his success, Jeff points back to great teachers in his past and present as the bedrock of his success. His undergraduate mentor at Tufts was Dr. Daniel Dennett. His daughter Dennett entered Viewpoint’s Kindergarten this fall, and her name is a tribute to the extraordinary imprint that a great teacher can have in a young person’s life.

R AISING GIRLS WAS DESTINY for new trustee Shelly Sumpter

Gillyard. Shelly grew up among the orange groves in the San Fernando Valley in a close-knit family that remains the center of her life today. Her parents, Benjamin and Shirley Sumpter, met in college in North Carolina and moved west to start their family. Today, her parents are integral to the daily life of her children and attend their events and activities at Viewpoint. Shelly grew up with an extended southern family that has a strong legacy of female educators.

When Shelly reflects on the responsibility of raising three girls, she remarks, “I want my daughters to be well-rounded, independent young women. I intentionally

gave them boy names, Chandler ’19, Chase ’19, and Ryan ’24, so that on their resume one might expect one thing and get something else! In a world where women are dramatically advancing in their career choices, I want my daughters to have the confidence that they can achieve whatever they desire. The education they receive at Viewpoint reinforces our goals for them every day. ”

Shelly is Senior Vice President of Talent at Nickelodeon Networks. She enjoys an exciting career in entertainment where she “feels blessed to create entertainment that children love.” Shelly not only adeptly juggles the balance of career and family, but also volunteers for Viewpoint as well. Since joining Viewpoint’s community, she has worked on the Annual Fund every year.

Last winter, Shelly and her husband Ron asked their friend, former lawyer and

speechwriter for Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Clarence Jones, to speak at Viewpoint during Black History Month. It was a highlight of the school year. Shelly remarked, “Having Dr. Jones share his legacy with the students was exciting, but what was most rewarding was seeing Viewpoint’s community embrace the experience. The teachers created curriculum specific to the assembly, and the students were enthusiastic about Dr. Jones’ inspirational words. It reinforced to me how great Viewpoint’s community is.”

When asked about her enthusiasm for her role as a trustee she says,

“I have been so impressed with what the community has done to expand the campus and curriculum of Viewpoint. I am excited to market this gem, so that many more families can call Viewpoint School home.”

Eliot Saki on the Upper School Competition Pool

With its spectacular views, abundance of deck space, and state-of-the-art scoreboard, the competition pool is as welcoming as it is beautiful. Yet, it is what happens within the walls of this remarkable facility that makes this pool so special. An amazing journey begins here for dozens of swimmers and their coaches. An opportunity to become part of something larger than the individual; to preserve the past and help write the future of Viewpoint’s Swim Family.”

v IEWPOINT ExPERIENCED the success during the 2011-12 school year that has become a hallmark for our School. Our students continued to achieve record

academic and athletic results, and the financial state of the School ended the year stronger than ever before. In addition, the opening of our new Upper School facilities dramatically enhanced the environment for learning and student achievement. Viewpoint’s long history of conservative fiscal management and the generosity of our parents and friends are at the core of our financial strength. This strength would not be sustainable without the commitment of Viewpoint’s senior administrators to the School’s mission to provide a rigorous college preparatory education for our students.

This past year, the historically low interest rates and Viewpoint’s strong financial position allowed us to refinance the School’s outstanding bonds. The new financing locked in a low fixed interest rate for 30 years and provided additional resources needed to actively pursue the final phase of the school’s Master Plan for the campus, while maintaining our debt service payments at our historic levels. Although there is much work remaining on the details of the next phase of redevelopment of our campus, the goals of the trustees and senior administrators remain unchanged since the Master Plan was approved nine years ago: to continue to enhance our campus by providing a safe environment that fosters academic achievement and the development of all of Viewpoint’s students.

The Finance Committee, with the guidance of the full Board of Trustees, actively monitored the School’s investment strategies during the year, making the changes necessary to safeguard Viewpoint’s financial resources. We believe that the conservative investment strategies deployed are fully in line with the mission of a non-profit educational institution.

The School’s senior administrators, with support and guidance from the trustees, work tirelessly to provide the best academic program and tools for learning, while actively managing expenses and the resulting tuition. Operating Revenue totaled $35.5 million during the 2011-12 fiscal year, an 8% increase over the prior year. Tuition and fees represented over 87% of revenues and remained a continual focus for the trustees throughout the year. We spent $34.4 million of revenue to fund Viewpoint’s operation, including faculty and staff salaries, instructional and administrative costs, student activities, facilities and equipment operations and maintenance, as well as to cover debt service on the School’s bond financing. In addition, we added over $1 million

to the School’s reserves, continuing to create the capital surpluses necessary to meet unforeseen financial challenges. In addition, a trustee task force focused on providing the financial aid resources necessary for Viewpoint to continue to build a diverse student body. As a result, the School is taking additional steps to build the resources necessary to provide additional aid today and into the future.

The nationally recognized success of Viewpoint’s students results from the vision and dedication of the School’s senior administrators and faculty. This success has allowed us to develop the campus we enjoy today and a strong financial condition that will sustain this level of excellence into the future.

Thank you for your continued support.

A record-breaking year proves that “Together We Are More”

T HANK YOU! We would not have achieved this remarkable year with our Annual Fund earning an unprecedented $1,708,799 from a record-breaking 1,246 donors

without the support of so many families and friends. Our 1,206 talented students are the beneficiaries of your generosity to Viewpoint. I am sincerely grateful for the single-minded determination of our 2011-12 Annual Fund Co-Chairs, Mrs. Marilee Denke and Mrs. Kate White, for their inspirational and good-humored leadership, as well as thankful to each Division Representative, Class Captain, and Phonathon caller, for their energetic commitment to achieve 93% parent participation – a historic first for our School!

Our “Come Together” Benefit, held for the first time on campus, showcased our spectacular canyon setting and our beautiful new facilities. Chair Mrs. Cindy Goldstein and an outstanding team of volunteers did an impressive job in transforming our campus into a sophisticated 60s theme reminiscent of an Austin Powers movie for a fun evening in support of our students. Along the way, we were entertained by Viewpoint’s own with the memorable performance by John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and the hilarious repartee of Emcee Rainn Wilson and Auctioneer Mr. Adam Alexander.

I also wish to thank Mrs. Marcia Balbín and Mr. Dana Ashton, Co-Presidents of the VSSA, for their exceptional leadership as they conclude their two-year term. The VSSA is instrumental in energizing hundreds of parent volunteers in a warm environment for volunteer engagement. On a daily basis, our parents demonstrate their commitment to supporting our students, faculty, and staff by coming together for many important events and activities.

Once again, thank you for all that you do to enrich Viewpoint’s many programs. By sharing your heart, your conviction, your energy, your ideas, your time, your skills, and your treasure, you demonstrate that together we can achieve more!

Ming Hodgson on the Upper School’s Mandarin Chinese Class

Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the People’s Republic of China with more native speakers than any other language on earth. At Viewpoint, where Mandarin Chinese is offered in both our Middle and Upper Schools, 13% of these students are studying this world language. We have inducted scores of students into the Chinese National Honor Society since this program began in 2002, and have made five cultural visits to mainland China where we regularly are greeted by alumni who work and teach as a result of their studies that began at Viewpoint.”

Ming Hodgson teaches Mandarin Chinese in Viewpoint’s Upper School.

Nan Cohen on Dworkoski Family Hall

The metaphor of the beehive comes irresistibly to mind: the lively occupants — similar in their attitudes of purpose, yet each an individual — going about her or his daily work; the constant motion, the logic of which is inaccessible to the casual viewer, but logical nonetheless; the invigorating hum underneath it all.”

Nan Cohen teaches English in Viewpoint’s Upper School.

Cathy Adelman on Blaney Patio

Blaney Patio is an emerald jewel on the Primary School’s Mary Carpenter Campus. Historically it has always been a bucolic, outdoor gathering place for Viewpoint’s community. Today, this charming natural setting is home to children’s performances of full-length plays inspired by classical literature and memorable special events. These early opportunities provide positive messages and create treasured childhood memories for our families. The timeless beauty of Blaney Patio will always be a centerpiece of the Primary School experience.”

Cathy Adelman is Head of Viewpoint’s Primary School.

If you know of family foundations, corporate foundations that benefit education, or individuals who serve on a foundation’s board of trustees, please tell us about them!

Viewpoint’s successful grant applications have two common characteristics: a good match between the School’s mission and the mission of the foundation and high participation in the Annual Fund from trustees, parents, and faculty.

Grants from many foundations supplement our fund raising to help enhance the School’s excellent educational offerings. The following foundations have supported Viewpoint in recent years:

Viewpoint was fortunate to establish two new funds to support the School’s Financial Aid Program. The first is from long-time benefactors and alumni parents, Steve and Leslie Carlson, who gave generously to capital construction for the last decade, most visibly with their gift to name the Carlson Family Theater. The second endowment was established by the Board of Trustees, as part of the Finance Committee’s review of the School’s Special Purpose Reserves and thoughtful restructuring of Reserve Funds to meet Viewpoint’s current needs.

The endoWMenT for financial aid

The Board of Trustees established the Endowment for Financial Aid in 2012 with the purpose of directing its annual investment income to the operating budget to support Viewpoint’s financial aid program. The School’s long-term goal is to substantively enlarge this Endowment, as well as Viewpoint’s resources for financial aid, thus ensuring that the School can attract and enroll qualified applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, thereby broadening the socioeconomic diversity of our School.

Currently the Board has a standing spending rate of up to 4% of the previous 12 quarters rolling average in each endowment account. In years where earnings exceed 4%, the excess earnings shall remain in the fund to support distributions in years of low or negative earnings and to grow the balance of the fund to maintain purchasing power against inflation.

2012 Benefit Come Together Showcased Our Community Spirit and Stunning New Facilities

2012 BeneFit

v IEWPOINT’S 29TH ANNUAL BENEFIT took a fresh and exciting turn this year with its first-ever on-campus gala. Come Together, the Beatles-inspired, 60s-themed

event, was held on May 5, and artfully celebrated the newly constructed 74,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities that opened to our students in September 2011. New and old friends enthusiastically gathered in our beautiful canyon to renew friendships and to support the School’s major fund raising event.

The evening featured special performances by Grammy-award nominated singer-songwriter John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and Emmy-award nominated actor-comedian Rainn Wilson of “the office.” Calabasas Mayor, Mrs. Mary Sue Maurer, also took the stage to pay tribute to Viewpoint’s recent development project and commented, “We have in Calabasas one of the finest day schools in the nation, and I want to congratulate you.”

The School is most grateful to this year’s Benefit Chair, Mrs. Cindy Goldstein, for her devotion and enthusiasm that guided a gifted and hard-working committee. She found a tremendously capable associate in Décor Chair Mrs. Heather Huang, whose event planning experience made her the perfect volunteer to take on the scope and complexities of this first on-campus Benefit. The all-important Auction was in the capable hands of Co-Chairs Mrs. Carolyn Ormond and Mrs. Julie Solnit, whose dedicated committee created an amazing compilation of items that contributed to the Benefit’s net revenue of $354,809. These funds raised directly support the School’s mission and the programs that provide excellence in education for every Viewpoint student.

This Benefit proved yet again that together we are stronger. We are most grateful to John Ondrasik and Rainn Wilson, our gifted parent-performers, for their talented contributions; parent, Mr. Adam Alexander, our proficient auctioneer, for his help to maximize our auction efforts each year; our team of volunteers who worked persistently to create an enjoyable and financially successful event; and to Viewpoint’s own staff whose hard work and determination enabled this spectacular event to come off with flying colors!

OUR 2011-12 ACADEMIC YEAR was a memorable and eventful one thanks to all the dedicated volunteers of the VSSA, the Viewpoint School Service Association. We are most grateful to all parents who gave so generously of their time, energy, and talents to enhance our community for the students, faculty, and staff. We are proud of the positive impact we make at Viewpoint, and thanks to our financial success from the Fall Luncheon and Book Faires, the VSSA was able to contribute to all four divisions of our School and the libraries.

VSSA Co-Presidents Mrs. Marcia Balbín and Mr. Dana Ashton

sales at their respective booths, while the senior float, cheerleaders, pep band, and food concessions all combined to make this a fun-filled, family event.

• Holiday Greens continues to be a wonderful Viewpoint tradition with parents gathering, socializing, and assembling the fragrant greens for presentation to the students at the Holiday Programs.

• Both the Winter and Spring Book Faires were successful community builders. Our own Viewpoint musicians entertained, while the cheerleaders brought a lot of pep to the occasion with their flash mob entrance. The Book Faires provided the students, parents, and teachers an opportunity to purchase books for their enjoyment.

• Primary and Lower School Movie Night in January was another hit with cupcakes, treats, and the film A Dolphin Tale.

• The Pajama Pancake Breakfast was a delicious way to start the day for Primary and Lower School students after the previous evening’s Open House, which showcased their impressive work from the School year.

• Used Uniforms now has a permanent home in Primary School. It is a great resource for parents to purchase and to donate gently used uniforms while supporting the VSSA.

• Room Parents again provided important communication with parents, keeping them informed of events and activities, and coordinating the classrooms’ seasonal parties.

The year in revieW:

• We began the year with our traditional Back-to-School Coffee that attracted over 200 parents to rekindle friendships and to prepare for another new year.

• The two anticipated social events, the Fall and Spring Luncheons, provided the perfect opportunity for us to enjoy one another’s company over lunch. The fall event offered a festive pre-holiday boutique, while the Spring Luncheon honored the VSSA Community Service Award winner, Jeanne Lieberman ’12, for her exceptional volunteerism.

• The VSSA’s outstanding Parent Education Program brought several well-known experts on contemporary issues to campus to share their expertise. These included Jonathan Scott on substance abuse, Lori Getz on the Internet and guidelines for appropriate use of the Web, Dr. Christopher Fulton on communicating with your child, and Dr. Jen Berman on food and eating issues. The last event of the series was a panel discussion held by Viewpoint’s Director of College Counseling, Rhody Davis, on the “Transition to College.”

• Great Pumpkin Day was celebrated in the Primary and Lower Schools with window painting, games, art, shaved ice, and inflatable obstacle courses.

• 2011 Homecoming proved to be another great all-School event with an exciting football match-up, the traditional crowning of the King and Queen at halftime, and entertainment from the Primary and Lower Schools’ Chorus. All divisions contributed to their community service projects by participating in the

• Sports Coordinators made sure that all the athletic teams from Fifth Grade through Eighth Grade had team parents who organized snack schedules and action photos of the participants, and that our Varsity teams had team parents and enjoyed senior nights.

• Divisional Representatives coordinated over 30 Faculty Food Days during year, while the VSSA Vice-President organized the Faculty

and Staff Appreciation Lunches in May. The faculty and staff always appreciate and look forward to these special occasions.

• We honored the parents of graduating seniors; then we sponsored a panel discussion about the adjustment to college life for both students and parents.

• Parent volunteers, led by the hard working Hot Lunch Coordinators, served hot lunches to students every day.

As our two-year term comes to a close, we are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many wonderful parent volunteers and helpful and diligent faculty and staff. Without their constant help and support, our job would have been impossible. We all should be proud of our community and our work that supports not only our children, but one another as well.

Gifts may be made by cash, check, or credit card.

A gift of appreciated stock generally offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift.

MaTching corPoraTe gifTs

Many employers will match employees’ donations. This opportunity presents an additional source of income for Viewpoint School and an easy way to leverage your gift into a larger donation. Check with your Human Resources Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts.

gifTs-in-Kind

Items may be donated to Viewpoint, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which

provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Viewpoint School. The School does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind.

Planned gifTs

Donors may consider giving through such means as life insurance, bequests, or charitable trusts. Gift planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift.

The School is pleased to provide you, your attorney, accountant, or tax advisor with additional information and assistance. Keep in mind that this information is general in nature. Always contact your professional tax advisor to learn how this general information relates to your individual circumstances. We are most grateful for your philanthropic support.

m ORE THAN 50 YEARS AGO, a precious few believed that a fine education was the greatest gift they could

give their children. They pledged themselves and their resources to found and to care for this School. Since then, Viewpoint School has grown from 24 students in the fall of 1961 to 1,206 students who enthusiastically took part in the opening of the 2011-12 school year.

Giving also has a way of growing exponentially. A planned gift provides donors with the perfect giving vehicle to increase both the amount of a gift to Viewpoint and to reduce personal estate taxes significantly. Whether you are considering a bequest, a charitable trust, life insurance, or a gift of appreciated stock, Viewpoint will help to facilitate a positive impact on both the School and your family. Thank you!
