Function archinephric (pronephric) duct joins cloaca

    Serves only anterior tubules

    Segmental, 1 per segment, only 2, 3, 4 segments

    URNINARY SYSTEM

    2 - Mesonephros (Opisthonephros)

    Lose connection to coelom

    Lose segmental pattern

Large increase in number of tubules

Nephrotomes break up masses of mesenchyme (nephrogenic cord)

    Secondary aggregation mesonephric tubules

Tubules connect to mesonephic duct (Old Pronephric duct) =

    Wollfian DuctWollfian Duct

New set of capillaries: around distal part of tubules

Reverse secretion = renal portal system

Opisthonephros: adult fishes & amphibians; embryonic only in birds and

    reptiles

    REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

    Germinal ridge

Primordial germ cells from endoderm: extensive migrate after neurulation

    complete

    Sex cords

Males round out to form seminiferous tubules

Females remain solid fuse with cortex

    Support cells arise from mesenchyme

    Male:

Seminiferous tubules grow out to join mesonephric duct

Mesonephric duct becomes coiled at this point to form epididymus

Remainder of mesonephric duct remain regular as the vas deferens

    REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

    Close association with urinary system

    Develop independently

Association later only the duct system

2 cell types in germinal ridge

    Epithelial cells from extraembryonic endoderm

    Ordinary mesodermal cells

    Somatic (support)Sertoli cells (testis)

    Superficial epithelium

    Follicle cells (ovary)

    Female:

    Mesonephric duct degenerates

New duct forms next to degenerating mesonephric duct

New duct is the Mllerian DuctMllerian Duct (Paramesonephric DuctParamesonephric Duct)

Anterior end opens into coelom = ostium tubaeostium tubae

Mllerian Duct forms in both sexes

Both sexes form two sets of ducts but keep only one

Mllerian Duct in female fuses distally to form uterus

Mesenchyme condenses around it to form connective

tissue and muscle of utering wall

Most distal end remains thin walled = vaginaVagina met by invagination of urogenital sinus

    hymen

    External genetalia:

Urogenital fold-glans (penis, clitoris) labial swellings

    Cryptorchism (males)
