GRAND KNIGHT REPORT

APRIL Universal: That people may learn to

respect creation and care for it as a gift of God.

 Evangelization: That persecuted

Christians may feel the consoling pres-ence of the Risen Lord and the solidar-ity of all the Church.

THE POPE’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS

APRIL, 50 YEARS AGO

Since it will soon be the Council’s 50th birthday. I thought it might be nice to share what the world was like 50 years ago April 3 – The world's first space nuclear power reactor, SNAP-10A, is launched by the United States from Vandenberg AFB, California. The reactor operates for 43 days and remains in low Earth orbit. April 5 – At the 37th Academy Awards, My Fair Lady wins 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Rex Harrison wins an Oscar for Best Actor. Mary Poppins takes home 5 Oscars. Julie Andrews wins an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the title role. Sherman Broth-ers receives 2 Oscars including Best Song, "Chim Chim Cher-ee".

April 6

The Intelsat I ("Early Bird") communications satellite is launched. It becomes operational May 2 and is placed in commercial service in June.

April 9 In Houston, the Harris County Domed Stadium (more commonly known as the Astrodome) opens. Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang appear on the cover of Time.

April 14 – In Cold Blood killers Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, convicted of murdering 4 members of the Herbert Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, are executed by hanging at the Kansas State Penitentiary for men in Lans-ing MichiganApril 17 – The first Students for a Democratic Society march against the Vietnam War draws 25,000 protestors to Washington, D.C.

April 24 In the Dominican Republic, officers and civilians loyal to deposed Presi-

dent Juan Bosch mutiny against the right-wing junta running the coun-try, setting up a provisional government. Forces loyal to the deposed military-imposed government stage a countercoup the next day, and civil war breaks out, although the new government retains its hold on power.

April 28 U.S. troops occupy the Dominican Republic. Vietnam War: Prime Minister of Australia Robert Menzies announces that

the country will substantially increase its number of troops in South Vietnam, supposedly at the request of the Saigon government (it is later revealed that Menzies had asked the leadership in Saigon to send the request at the behest of the Americans).

Late-19th century Connecticut was marked by the growing prevalence of fraternal benefit societies, hostility toward Catholic immigrants and dangerous working conditions in factories that left many fami-lies fatherless. Recognizing a vital, practical need in his community, Father Michael J. McGivney, the 29-year-old assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., gathered a group of men at his parish on Oct. 2, 1881. He proposed es-tablishing a lay organization, the goal of which would be to prevent Catholic men from entering secret societies whose membership was antithetical to Church teaching, to unite men of Catholic faith and to provide for the families of deceased mem-bers.

HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS—PART I

RUSS:

When I was growing up, we lived near the Knights of Columbus hall, and I of-

ten walked past it. I wasn’t Catholic at the time, so it was just a building to me.

GAIL:

For the first three years of our marriage, we moved around the country follow-

ing Russ’s work in aerospace. When we landed in California with two children,

we considered ourselves “settled down”. We were in a parish where whites

were a minority, and it was quite a learning experience!

DEACON’S CORNER During the Lenten season, our attention has been on prayer among many other things. With the Easter season upon us, we need not reduce our attention to prayer. I’d like to rec-ommend praying the rosary which is the Bible translated into prayer. The Glorious Mysteries are most appropriate during the Easter season. In the first Glorious Mystery, the Resurrec-tion, the apostles were so sure of the reality of the resurrec-tion that they gladly gave their lives for Christ. In the second Glorious Mystery, we consider the 40 days Jesus spent with His apostles before He ascended into heaven, testifying that He is with us until the end of time. He entrusted the apostles and us with the mission of bring-ing His Good News to the world. This seemingly impossible task is brought within our group by the Third Mystery in which the Holy Spirit turned the apostles from frightened, weak sinners into bold preachers of the faith. In the fourth Mystery, the mother of Jesus, Mary, who was conceived without sin, is taken body and soul into heaven to receive the embrace of her Son. In the Fifth Mystery, the last Glorious Mystery, we honor Mary as Queen of heaven and earth as the woman of Revelation 12 - standing on the moon, clothed with the sun, wearing a crow of 12 stars. May all have a blessed and prayerful Easter season! Deacon Terry

Pope preaches hope to jobless, immigrants, prisoners March 25th, 2015 By Cindy Wooden

VATICAN CITY – Hope is the first act of resistance to evil, Pope Francis told the people of Naples as he pleaded for respect for the dignity of immigrants, jobs for the unemployed and the conversion of the city’s notorious mafia fami-lies. “The Gospel teaches that the truly blessed are the poor in spirit, the nonviolent, the meek, those who work for peace and justice. This is the force that will change the world,” the pope said March 21 as he celebrated Mass in Naples’ iconic Piazza del Plebiscito. “Dear Neapolitans,” he said in his homily, “don’t let anyone steal your hope! Don’t give in to the lure of easy money or dishonest income. ... React firmly against organizations that exploit and corrupt the young, the poor and the weak with the cynical sale of drugs and other crimes. Don’t let anyone steal your hope!” During his morning meeting with residents of the city’s Scampia neighbor-hood, an area of poverty and degradation, an immigrant woman from the Phil-ippines asked the pope to please remind people that immigrants are children of God. “Have we reached the point where that’s necessary?” the pope asked the crowd. “Are migrants second-class humans?” “They are like us, children of God,” he said. What is more, they are reminders that this world is not the permanent home of anyone and that “we are all mi-grants (moving) toward another homeland.” “We are all children of God,” he said, “beloved children, desired children, saved children. Think about that!” The problem is not simply the poverty joblessness creates, he said, but the way it robs people of dignity and of hope for the future. “When one is unable to earn his daily bread, he loses his dignity,” the pope said. “Tell me,” the pope told the crowd in Scampia, “if we close the door on mi-grants, if we take away the jobs and dignity of people,” what will happen? Cor-ruption “is a temptation, it’s a slide,” he said. Everyone has within them the possibility of being corrupted, of paying some-one under the table or looking for easy cash, he said. “Corruption stinks” like a decaying animal corpse, he said. “A corrupt society stinks. A Christian who allows corruption is not a Christian. He stinks, under-stand?” Later, addressing mafia members and other criminals during his homily at Mass, the pope said: “Humbly, as a brother, I repeat: Convert to love and jus-tice. Let yourself be found by God’s mercy.”

INSURANCE REPORT

If you knew that today was the last chance you would ever have to buy additional life insurance, how much would you buy? If you had a money-making machine, that once broken, could never be repaired, how much would you insure it for? If you knew that today was the last time you would have the opportunity to guarantee your family an income if something happened to you, how much income would you give them? If you knew that today marked the end of your ability to buy future retirement security, how much would you buy? Isn’t it safe to say that you would put some addi-tional dollars into more life insurance protection that could be used for family or retirement bene-fits? Chances are that you will be around for a long time, but life is full of “ifs” and surprises isn’t it? Let me help you plan for the future. Call me to-day.

I don't think it is too early to start thinking about our annual fishing trip. How many times have you said to yourself that you should go on the trip at least once? This trip should be on your bucket list. Start thinking now and be ready when the next trip comes around. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Bishop Creek area of the Eastern Sierra's is be held on the 1st weekend of October (10/1/15-10/4/15). Join me and 40-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. In addition to the South Fork of Bishop Creek that runs through the campground, there are the South Lake, North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake 2 fishing areas nearby. The event is held at the Creekside RV Park with campsites, RV sites, and trailers available for rent. You must make your own reservation for sites. They hold a few sites for us but they are first come-first serve. Contact the office at Creekside for a reservation of your desired site. Be sure to tell them that you will be part of our group. They may be reached at 760-873-4483. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, de-pending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games almost every night. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sunday morning breakfast. Beautiful mountain (elevation 8300 ft at the campgrounds) scenery, good fishing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and the creeks. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that our drought ends before we have more serious water shortages and possible rationing. Special Note: The pond within the Creekside Campgrounds continues to be un-der control of the California Department of Fish and Game. They stock the pond on their schedule. All normal Fish and Game laws apply. For more information, please contact me at a Council or Assembly Event or call me. SK Bill Alexander PGK KCO Club Event Chairman 805-527-4720

O Father, you desire all of us to be happy. Stir up the grace of a reli-gious vocation in the hearts of many men and women. Grant to them the willingness and generosity to give of themselves, their lives, their time and their talents to the service of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord and Savior, and to His Holy Church. May more men and women go forth as priests, deacons, brothers and sisters to bring the truths of our Catholic faith to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better and love You more... and serving You, be truly happy. Amen.

Mater Dolorosa Silent Retreat A Knights perspective

This year Knights retreat at Mater Dolorosa in Sierra Madre about a hour and a half away was incredible as usual. This year’s retreat topic was Holy Waiting in a world that can’t wait. It is very common for everybody to want what they want right now and don’t want to wait for it in God’s time. You here many times God I pray that this or that person re-cover and get better. You want it done now but God will do on his time. It is so common when someone has a accident that the victim may lose faith temporarily and cry out Lord if your are so good how could you let this happen. Patients there are a silver lining through every black cloud. At the retreat I shared my experience of my near death bicycle acci-dent. In looking back at my accident it was the best thing that could of happened to me. As most know I was full of energy wanting to do everything I could for the Knights or my job. I spent very little time with what is most important to me my family. The accident I had was God’s way of tell-ing me to slow down and appreciate your family. Thank God it turned out the way it did. The retreat inspired me to relax and wait and allow your faith to work for you. During the retreat I was joking with Brother John McKenzie that miracles do happen Bother John was silent most the weekend. St. Rose of Lima was by far the largest parish in attendance. We had 26 out of the full capacity 101. If any knights are interested to attend next year’s see Retreat Captain Mike Palacios.

God Bless, PGK David Lavoie

The St. Patrick’s Day dinner at the St. Rose of Lima hall on Tuesday March 17, 2015 was a very successful event. We had a large increase in attendance from last year’s event and there was enough food for all. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to all my Brothers and their La-dies who volunteered to help out and make this event such a success. All your help and hard work makes it so much easier to put on an event, and I am truly grateful for everyone that helped, and also for all of you that attended. I want to especially thank John Linscott and Bob Joyce for making this dinner such a great meal, without them it would not have happened. I hope that everyone enjoyed the evening and that you will look forward to next year as I am, to have another successful St. Patrick’s Dinner.

God Bless You All Ron Huerth Chairman

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BOWLING LEAGUE

The 2014-2015 season is progressing nicely during the second half of the season. The winner of the first half will play the winner of the second half in May for the overall championship.

Think about joining us this season as a sub or on the wait list for a

regular position if it shows up. We can always use subs. Only $3 for a sub after you pay your USBC Sanctioning fees of $20. Let me know if you are interested in joining as a regular bowler or substitute. Returning bowlers have priority on being a regular again. Additional new regular bowlers will be asked/allowed to bowl with the following order: being a Knight, a Knight's spouse, or part of a Knight's family (age 18 and older). Friends, neighbors, coworkers or others with an existing regular bowler as a sponsor will be considered as space allows.

We don't need great bowlers but we do need those bowlers that want an enjoyable evening among friends and families
