Grand Knight’s ReportMy Brother Knights:

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Last year the London Daily Mail ran an article entitled “New Year’s resolutions ‘barely last longer than a week’” However, the fact remains, we all make them. The experience is nearly universal. Some Nations use different calendars, but the passing of one year to another is marked by a deliberate period of reflection over the past year and a pledge to begin anew, to change, in the year to come.

Health Clubs seize the moment, inviting the newly resolute to begin shedding the unwanted weight which is a symbol of the lifestyle choices which they sincerely hope to change.

Why not tie our faith to some of our New Year’s resolutions/goals? Here are some ideas for doing so.

Prayer – Add more prayer to your daily life. There are many ways to pray. Traditional prayers like the Rosary, talking to our Lord, admiring his wonderful creations, quieting yourself in the presence of God through centering prayer are only a few ways to enrich your life with daily prayer. Get a daily prayer book or daily Catholic devotions book… and read it. Living Faith is an excellent resource.

Faith Formation – No matter how old you are (children and adults alike), there are religious education programs designed to deepen your faith knowledge and formation.

Be Active and Get Involved – Going to Mass on Sunday is only part of being a Catholic Christian. There are so many activities within our council, and ministries within the Catholic Church and all of them need volunteers to keep them running. What interests you? Do you see a need within your parish or our council that is not being met?

involved in your parish community, you will have more knowledge and tools to accomplish this goal.

In the coming months there are opportunities for all of our members to participate in worthy events. The newsletter will have information regarding these events that always need and welcome a helping hand. In doing so you may be able to say you were successful in keeping one or two of your New Year’s resolutions.

Wishing all of our Brother Knights and their families a very blessed and wonderful New Year.

For those who could not attend, you missed a great time. The food was excellent. Side dishes were prepared members wives and the main dishes, ham and lasagna, prepared by our resident cook, Xavier Lopez. After the meal Heather was all set to entertain the group with a few games, but was kind enough to let the "Old Man" have his way and play his quiz game. Prizes, in the form of Logan's candy went to the winning tables. Winners were Manny Landero's, table and Kevin Cavanaugh's table. (You know the quiz was fair as the Old Man's table did not win.)A great time was had by all and no one went hungry. We thank Xavier, Reilly and Heather for the

beautiful decorations. It made the party first class. And thanks to everyone else that helped.P.S. We were honored to have in attendance Fr. Michael Strahan and Fr. O'dell. Fr. Mike started the evening off with a nice prayer. We thank them for attending.

December 2011

Dear Brother Knights and Families,

I hope your Christmas was wonderful and I wish you a very happy new year. As we prayerfully move into 2012, I want you to take a moment to read the following article from Brother and SK Thomas P. Smith, Jr., our Knights of Columbus Executive VP:

Time to take control

By Thomas P. Smith, Jr., Executive Vice President of Agencies and Marketing

A statistic I find frightening is this: about 50% of households in the United States and Canada have no individually owned life insurance. We will discuss this number over the next few months as I try to convince you to get out of that group if you are in it. If you aren’t among the 50%, maybe I can enlist your help in your council as a spokesman for the value of life insurance.

Note that I said “individually owned life insurance.” While the number for those with absolutely no life insurance is just as – if not more – frightening, the 50% does not include those who have some form of group life insurance, usually provided by their employer.

This group life issue, which our agents see and discuss every day, is an interesting security blanket. Most times, the amount offered is far from what you need, and the only way to determine what you need is with a comprehensive needs analysis. Your company’s human resources or benefits department doesn’t do needs analysis. Instead, they apply a formula: you make X amount in salary and the group life is either a flat amount ($15,000 seems popular) or a multiple of your salary (somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 seems popular). Either way, it has nothing to do with the number of children you have, the mortgage balance you carry, or the amount of money your wife would need if you die. It’s a completely random number.

It can also disappear at any time. All of us know people - friends, family members, neighbors - who have lost their jobs. When the job is lost, so is the group life insurance coverage. If the company experiences difficulty and budgets need to be cut, group life can

PAGE 9

be reduced or eliminated. And that decision could be made at the worst possible time for you.

Most group life insurance coverage reduces or disappears when you retire. Many times it can be converted, but at a very expensive premium (remember, you’re no kid anymore when you retire, and premiums do rise as you get older). Just because you turn 65 doesn’t mean you no longer need life insurance or need less coverage. Actually, the opposite is true.

Group life insurance is a great benefit and certainly does help, but it must be supplemented with a personally owned portfolio. We can tell you exactly how to blend your group benefit with your K of C life insurance so things can be in your control. Don’t let the feeling of security that group life provides distract you from the real issue: taking control of your family’s financial future!

Thank you for taking the time to review Mr. Smith’s article on financial need and group life insurance. If you find yourself in the 50%, please call or email me today. I would be happy to provide the financial needs analysis explained above free of charge. Enjoy your Knights of Columbus fraternal benefits today! God bless!

Fraternally,
