British Biker CooperativeDedicated to the Preservation of the British Motorcycle

The British Biker Cooperative (BBC) is a unique group of individuals dedicated to the preservation of the British motorcycle. The BBC was established in 1977, and has remained active in all aspects of British motorcycling since.

Our membership encompasses all British motorcycle enthusiasts. The collector, purist, racer, tourer, and riders of all backgrounds find contentment in our organization. Together we create a cooperative, networking the contacts, ideas,

and enthusiasm essential to ride and appreciate British motorcycles, most of which are virtually extinct.

The BBC is an incorporated entity governed by a Board of Directors and Officers elected biennially. Our yearly membership stands at over one hundred members, of which many own several British motorcycles.

Annually the BBC sponsors meetings, a rallye and bike show, a benefit, a family picnic, a dinner, and a holiday party. We also participate as the BBC in many other motorcycle related events.

We publish The BBC KNEWS, a quarterly (or more often) periodical including stories and photos of events, cartoons, drawings, poetry, technical tips, and limited advertisement.

To become a BBC member you must own a British motorcycle, represent the BBC in a respectable manner, and pay the annual dues.

We are British riders. A unique group of individuals. Lovers of a lost, but not forgotten British art.

Cover Bike Details

This is my 1969 TR6R Tiger. I bought it in 1986. It was bone stock except for the saddle bags and a repainted gas tank. In the winter of ’92 I personally rebuilt the top end w/ 10.5 to 1 pistons, and had the gas tank, fenders, side cover & oil tank painted. Since

then I’ve returned it to stock compression. Dale Matteson of Dales Cycles did the top & bottom ends at that time. There is a little more than 30,000 miles on her now with 10,000 of those in the past two years.

For you techies I’ll include the following: When Dale did the rebuild I had him replace

the drive sprocket and added one more tooth. Later, I replaced the rear sprocket and chain. Dale also polished the timing, gearbox & primary cases, put on new tires, tubes, & brakes. The build included a new crankshaft and longer duration exhaust cam. I put a new exhaust system on in 1997. At that time I repainted the seat pan, recovered the seat, rebushed the swing arm and added tapered roller bearings to the front end. In ’05

it got a new oil tank and the rear loop, side cover, oil tank & headlight brackets were painted.

In 2008 I ported & polished the intake manifold and Dale rebuilt one of my Norton carbs and installed it. I also had the gauges rebuilt and put on new cables. Oh, I also

replaced the ammeter with one from the Norton. Other that that this poor bike has been completely neglected. Plans for the future are Boyer ignition and an oil filter. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, which is nearly impossible because I get to ride it. After riding it fellow BBC member Tom Rasman said “It rides as nice as it looks”......I have to agree with him.

A Little Motorcycle Humour

A guy is riding along a country road, when a bird flies up in front of him. The biker can’t do anything and hits the bird. As he looks in his rear view mirror, he sees the bird lying in the road. Being the kind guy that he is, he stops, picks up the bird and takes it home and puts it, still in a coma, in a cage. When the bird wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, “SHIT, I must have killed the biker”.

The Editor’s Points & Plugs

Apparently the Mayan’s were wrong because almost everyone I know is still around. So to all of us left, Happy New Year and welcome to the start of the 2013 BBC season of riding, reveling, and recreation. Of course we still have to worry about The Zombie Apocalypse, but I’m prepared for that.

The 2012 season ended in another great Holiday party at the Holiday Inn in Neenah. The Saturday meal was very good this year thanks in part to some extra money left over due to the cost cutting measures that were spear headed by Pat Hanson. Elections were held for the Board of Directors and there are some new people to help steer our organization. Check out page one to see who’s on board. Last year was a good year and expect an even better one this year.

There was some major steering of the BBC done at the M.F.H. in January at Indian & Colette’s home where the group set the year’s agenda, proposed a budget, made some policy changes, and discussed new product ideas. Now the B&O just have to

implement what was laid out and we’ll be just fine.

One change that came out of this meeting was the decision to offer the choice of a hard copy edition of the newsletter to any member for an additional fee of $5.00 tacked on to your dues. The new membership form will reflect this, so if you’re like me and prefer to have something that you can actually hold in your hands, just check the appropriate box on the membership form, write out a check for $35.00 when you send in your dues. Keep in mind that the extra $5.00 is only 1/3 the cost to the BBC of printing and mailing six newsletter a year, so it is still a pretty good deal.

On a personal note, my garage remodeling is finished and I’m now free to work on motorcycles again! The first bike up is my son’s Honda CB160 that he is preparing to race in AHRMA, hopefully for the 2014 season, as right now he has no race license and of course there’s a lot of work to be done on the bike. He did go from a running bike to a pile of boxes in two days of disassembly! Now the fun begins.

Now, ATTENTION!!!! I need some pictures of member bikes for the cover of future BBC KNEWS issues. I have exactly one left. Please get out your cameras. Thank you.

Technical Tips

My Favorite Tools: First of Several - the Air Compressor

Although not technically, I think, a “tech tip” I thought it worthwhile to discuss some of my favorite workshop tools. Common hand tools like wrenches and screwdrivers are not included and the tools that will be discussed are for home workshops, not professional shops. Top priorities are price (cheap), ease of use, & how often they get used, so you’ll hear a lot about Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Farm & Fleet, and Menards.

The first major tool that I’d add to my workshop would be an air compressor. You’ll find countless uses for it: filling tires, blowing parts dry, cutting stuff, cleaning spark plugs, sand blasting, & on and on. I prefer the “oilless” kind of compressor as there’s less maintenance involved and it seems like less to go wrong. My compressor has a 1 H.P. motor(120vac/12 amp) with an 8 gallon tank and can deliver 4.5 SCFM @ 40 P.S.I. It does a pretty good job although if you’re sand blasting you’ll have to blast/wait/blast/wait while the tank fills up between blasting. Something similar can be bought new for about $120. Shown below are several accessories that have come in very handy.

Your basic air nozzle for blowing off parts or whatever and the tire chuck nozzle for filling all manner of tires: motorcycle, car, bicycle, wheel barrow, you name it!

The die grinder is like a large Dremel tool only lots more power. Shown with a cut-off wheel, but many other attachments are available. Great for cutting bolts or general grinding.

Spark plug cleaner. I love it. Most old Brit bikes run rich so this saves me from having to constantly buy new plugs. Cost: $10! Just be careful to get ALL the grit off the cleaned plug.

This is my air compressor. There are cheaper ones and more expensive ones. This one suits my needs. Yours may be different. Shop around and ask questions.

Late August 2010 Mary & I decide to take a road trip vacation down to Alabama to go on a cruise out of Mobile.  The drive down was beautiful, clean roads & great scenery. So we took a day pit stop in Birmingham which is in the north central part of the state. Just 25 minutes East of Birmingham is Leeds Alabama home to Barber Motor-sports Museum and road course race track.http://www.barbermuseum.org/Located just off of Interstate 20 the Museum is very easy to find and has a grand entrance fitting the amazing facility and grounds. The building is eye catching from a distance but the sculptures at the museum entrance set the tone for what awaits you inside. The glass entrance does not hide much as you enter a simple lobby that opens to a

five story open floor museum that encompasses motorcycle history form the earliest gas powered bicycles to today’s technology powered machines. Entrance fee is a modest $15.00 for adults, save $3.00 a person if you are a “Triple A Member”, what a bargain.Center of the museum is a large glass elevator that as we were instructed by the lady at the counter to take to the fifth floor and work our way back down.  She also encouraged us to take as many pictures as we like, but please do not touch or sit on any motorcycles. Once at the top you are welcomed by excellent display stands and structures, individually displayed bikes all are accompanied with an information plaque identify the high lights of that bike. While there we were also treated to race watching, as the backside of the museum overlooks Barber Motor-sports Race Track.  Three plus hours later we finally made it back to the first floor, I took nearly 100 pictures, and certainly could have taken hundreds more.  An amazing facility any motorcycle or even motor sports fan must see, I know I’ll be back. Enjoy the photos and safe travels till next time.Kevin Howard

Illinois Connections

There is a motorcycle club of “like-minded riders” in Springfield, Illinois. The Vintage Iron Riders was established in 2003 to promote the history and enjoyment of older motorcycles. The club has an annual run to western Illinois for an overnight campout and a viewing of one of the largest collections of British motorcycles in the US. BBC member Tommy Knox is also the secretary of the VIR and sent this report.

On a bright autumn morning, 15 bikers left the parking lot of Denny’s Restaurant in Springfield, IL for the 125-mile Ride to Ron’s (R2R). Ron is a British biker who was an authorized Triumph dealer in the 60’s and 70’s and continues to restore older motorcycles at the facility that has been on his family farm for 40 years.

A 1956 Harley KHK led the pack that included three Triumphs, a Tiger, my ’02 Bonneville, and a ’71 Bonneville that I affectionately call the “Keith Richards” – it’s scarred, scratched, dented and faded, but give it two kicks and in a belch of smoke, it’s ready to rock like it did in 1971.

The fields of corn and beans that line our circuit had been harvested early because of the drought, so we had a clean field of vision. No worries about the startled deer. At 25 miles we stopped for coffee and pastries at the home of motorcycle enthusiast Harvey Tapscott. He is currently building a 1965 Bonnie Chopper with a custom Union Jack gas tank for his teenage grandson. Now, there’s a cool Grandpa!

After shedding one layer of clothing and some spent caffeine, we roared to life on the secondary roads, and the state highways that were all but deserted except for us., and the occasional pickup that gave us a legitimate reason to crank it up and pass around them.

Clear skies, clear roads, not to hot, not cold, getting gasoline at a 2-pump filling station and alternating positions in the ride formation brought us to our secluded campsite by mid-afternoon. It felt good to stretch my back.

In short order there was a hot fire and cold beers. Pistols and fireworks came out of the chase truck before sleeping bags or tents. Priorities.

We laughed at some of the same stories of past years and filled our guts with bratwurst and chili. A full moon was my tent top when I rolled out under open skies. Some guys had tents and one dude strung up a hammock. Campfire coffee at 6:00 am is the great “cure all.”

On Sunday morning, we toured barns full of Triumphs, Nortons, BSA’s and Motoguzzis. None for sale. It was the same last year and the year before. And just like years past, I get giddy looking at the 750 Trident with my favorite color scheme of black and scarlet tank with gold pinstriping.

After a quick prayer for safety, we split off into smaller groups for the serious business of getting back home in time to rake a few leaves.

Still running strong. I was looking forward to the 260 mile back road ride. Left on Wednesday as usual so I could get set up and get some riding in before the Rally. Little did I know that when I got to Eagle Cave a storm was on its way. Jim Cutting was already set up in our usual spot, Catilina Cove. I get set up and Pretty Boy showed up. We got him set up and we began socializing. (Beer). So I’m guessing around 5 o’clock or so Wes comes around the campground telling everybody that we had about a hour before the storm arrived. I forgot to tell ya that it was at least 110% humidity & I had recently found out that I received Lymes disease from a deer tick, deer hunting the

previous fall...so I really felt like crap the whole weekend. BUT I suffered thru . Anyways, back to the storm, couldn’t have been 5 minutes and the winds took off and trees and limbs were falling everywhere. I am standing in front my tent closing it up & PB was standing in front of his tent when a very large tree broke off and landed right between us. Craziest thing I have ever seen.  Everyones knows how tents are strong enough to hold a tree up so Jim & Pretty Boy hid cowering in Jim’s tent & I ran to warn everyone , And get my ass in Wes,s check-in cabin.  It was just like the movies, I kept running for cover and limbs were breaking off and falling all around me. When the storm was over there was a lot of clean up to do and PB’s and my tent took some damage. But with the heat we had it didn’t take long to dry everything out. As we were standing around looking at the damage, here comes Mary Lange and some other BBC members bringing me her spare tent because she heard all my stuff was wet and wrecked....BBC is always there to help & thats what I like most about this club.   The rest of the weekend went as planned....fun party fun....Thanks to everybody that helped Kevin and I with the games, Ron Finster, Pauline, Steve Baker, because the heat really was kicking my ass on Friday. Thanks again everybody. You’re all my family and I love all you guys ( even you Flyby )     B-RAD Haugland

Poor Quality Bearings Prompts Triumph RecallThursday, February 14, 2013Byron WilsonEditorial AssistantMotorcycleUSA.com

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice regarding wheel assembly on a number of 2011-2012 model year Triumph Motorcycles. According to the NHTSA notice “wheels were assembled with bearings of an unknown quality” on the Daytona 675, Street Triple, 2012 Thunderbird and Thunderbird Storm models. The notice goes on to say that “wheel bearings of poor quality could fail unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a motorcycle crash.”

According to additional information provided by the NHTSA, approximately 194 Daytona 675 and Street Triples from 2011 are affected, while estimates for the Thunderbird and Thunderbird Storm are listed at 24 and 32 units respectively.

Triumph will contact owners of affected units and dealers are set to replace the bearings, free of charge. Additional information can be attained by contacting Triumph

direct at 1-678-854-2010 . Owners can also contact the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236

or go to www.safecar.gov for further details on the recall. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 13V032000.

Well here we are again, the MFH is over the calendar is starting to come together and I have my first opportunity to say howdy and put out a little information.First let me thank you for continuing your membership, second lets talk a little about what you get for your dues. The big thing for this year is the Rally registration, one of the things I disliked about the pre-registration process was that Members paid the same as non-members. Well we fixed that. Due to the continuing efforts of the Board to get the most bang for our buck we were able to reduce the price of the Rally for members by $5.00. There’s a catch though isn’t there always.

You have to be a paid Member when you register, that means if you normally pay your membership at the Rally to get the discount you’ll need to renew before or when you pre-register. The first question we had about this was “what about spouses?”, so to take care of that we are allowing each Member to have one guest at the $40.00 price tag. Now five bucks is not a lot but I figured it’s better than paying the same as the guy who doesn’t support the Coop. year round. Here’s the down side if you don’t pre-register the price at the gate has gone up to $55.00. Tracking shows that over 95% of the Members that come to the Rally pre-register so this should just be a

savings to all but a very few and hopefully we can get them to pre-register also.

As your looking at the calendar you’ll see that there are a few new events for this year, including a few overnighters. It’s looking to be a great year and if the drought continues we’ll all be paying more for food but riding on dry roads again all summer. Our kick off this year again will be with the SCMG in Madison, if you missed this last year you missed a real blast. Al please give me a ring I’d like to set something’s up.

Well for those who saw me last at the Rally I’m glad to say that I’m back up and walking, and thanks for all the well wishes. I really hope that I don’t go flying of the thing again this year. Work in the shop on sponsored racer ex-Prez Dave’s 500 Triumph is coming along well and we’re just about done with all the frame work and moving into the engine. The plan is to be at little Talladega at the end of March, but we will have to see how well the pay checks do. Dave is real good about posting our progress on Facebook if you’d like to follow along. My 750 BSA is pretty much ready to hit the track again, though I am working on a new tank the old one was split open during the oops. Honestly I think were both looking to have an event free year, but then it wouldn’t be racing would it.

I believe I can say that as an organization we are very healthy right now and are looking forward to a lot of riding this season. I hope to see a lot more of you this year, come out and enjoy one of these great rides we have planned.

Till Then

SAN FRANCISCO (WWJ) - BMW North America has probably had to deal with plenty of  unusual lawsuits, but one filed last week may be a first — a California man says the seat on his motorcycle has given him an erection he just can’t shake.

Henry Wolf of California is suing BMW America and aftermarket seatmaker Corbin-Pacific claiming his issue began after a four-hour ride on his 1993 BMW motorcycle, with a ridge like seat. Wolf is seeking compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, emotional distress and what he calls “general damage.”

He said he’s had the erection non-stop for 20 months. And it comes with another side effect: The lawsuit says Wolf is “now is unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental anguish.”

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Dr. Michael Lutz, at the Michigan Institute of Urology, who said there is no medical data to support the man’s claim. However, “It’s been long-known that compression of the neurovascular supply to the penis —  if it’s compressed for a period of time, whether it be on a bicycle seat or some other device — it can actually cause prolonged numbness of the genitalia,” Lutz said.

“Not only in men, but women can also get numbness in that region if they’re

compressing those nervous structures to that region of the body,” he said.

BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan in Canton, Mich., checked out the story and noted the man wasn’t riding a standard BMW motorcycle seat. He was on an after-market seat, which start at about $200. People generally buy them to make the ride more comfortable.

“Sometimes people say it’s more comfortable, sometimes people can get a tall seat or a low seat or they’re shorter or taller, they can come heated,” said Theresa at BMW Motorcycles of Southeast Michigan.

So there we have it, everyone. Become BBC members before the rally this year and pre-register for only $40.00. Such a deal.

I realize that it is only February but don’t get caught flat footed when the riding season springs upon us. Start thinking about what your bike needs to get it running now. I’m just bout finished with my old twin that has been in a constant state of restoration for the past four years. I’m really looking to getting it running. As soon as that happens, I have to sort out the carburetor gremlins in my Trident. I sure hope I don’t have to spend $600.00 on carbs this year.

So that is about it for now. I’m getting ready for a week-long trip to California as we speak. A long-time good friend of mine has been bugging me to come out for a visit for a while now, so I’m finally going to do it. I’ll try to bring back some sunshine and warmer weather with me. But knowing the luggage fee policies of the airlines these days, they’ll charge me an arm and a leg to bring these two items onto the plane with me.

That’s it for now. Until next time . . .

Doug Aretz, Treasurer

British Biker Cooperative

Everyone looks good on a British motorcycle!

Once again I put pen in hand to mesmerize the reading faithful of the BBC. What wondrous literary comment can the ever amazing Treasurer provide the highly esteemed membership that hover on every word that I write? Hey, am I out-of-my-head or what? Most of you are probably thinking that I have my head up my butt . . . actually! But this report will have a serious overtone, believe it or not. I just had to get the outrageous commentary out of the way first.

As I write this, YOU . . . THE MEMBERSHIP . . . were the first concern. There was no way that we were going to pass any kind of expense that the organization of the BBC incurred, onto the membership. We know that we don’t need to increase fees on any level so membership dues and rally fees will stay the same. We even invented a scheme to save you a few dollars. The savings scheme is this . . . you pre-register for the rally for only $40.00 “IF AND ONLY IF” you are a BBC member before you attend. This means you walk into the rally as a BBC member. You can’t pay the membership dues at the rally and expect the $40.00 rally fee offer. If you are not a

member and want to pay the pre-registration fee for the rally, the rally fee is $50.00. If you are paying the rally fee at the gate regardless of being a member or not, you pay the “$55.00 rally fee. So what is the benefit? BECOME BBC MEMBERS NOW AND PRE-REGISTER FOR THE RALLY FOR ONLY $40.00!!! I think that is clear. The Prez will also be writing something to this effect as well.

What is the benefit to the organization? Well, we hope to get more members, primarily before the rally. The Board and Officers thought this was a win-win deal when we discussed this arrangement at the Meeting From Hell in January. To make sure that we keep our finances on an even keel, we will still be looking at maintaining the same cost savings measures that we implemented last year. These measures did not seem to matter much at last year’s rally so we felt that the attendees didn’t miss out on anything and we still had a great time.

The Treasusrer’s job will become a little more complex. I’ll have to make sure that ALL of our income is placed in specific categories. This was done in the past but the Prez wants this to be more specific so whatever income is generated, it has to be earmarked for very specific purposes. Damn! No more getting away with my clandestine embezzling scheme where I made MILLIONS of dollars off the BBC. Yeah . . . the BBC makes MILLIONS of dollars every year . . . and monkeys might come flying out of my butt (ala Wayne’s World, Saturday Night Live).
