From Your President… W e’re sorry to say that on Christmas day we received

not the best news to start off a New Year. It was confirmed that at least two of our Club Deportivo members tested positive for Covid. As a result, the local Health authorities ordered the Club to shut down and cease ALL Club activities until further notice. But we are prevailing. Our staff has been working from home, responding to the needs of members, monitoring Rescue One, and managing interactions with the community. Steps have been taken to re-sanitize the clubhouse, and contact tracing is underway. We are not sure when it will be, but once the Health Department clears the Club for partial opening, we will announce activities that are suitable and permissible under the Covid safety protocols. I’ve been pleased to see how some of our members have formed committees to explore ways for the Club to thrive and survive. Great ideas are coming from these committees, and we encourage members to pitch in with theirs. We look forward to implementing many of these ideas once we can reopen. Although we are reviewing ways to cut expenses—an ongoing process—we still need annual dues to be paid. When there are fewer activities, the expenses go down, for sure. But we still must pay the basics, and your dues go a long ways to keep things running at a survival level until we can again be a fully active Club. We appreciate those who have already paid, and encourage those who haven’t to do so this month, before February 1, after which time they become subject to a late fee. I want to again thank Francine and our staff for their exceptional assistance during these trying times. I’m not sure if our membership is aware of the hard work and creativity put in by the staff under these difficult circumstances. They go above and beyond what is laid out in their job descriptions—coming up with new ways to create fun experiences for members who are here; keeping all of us, whether in Kino or not, informed about conditions in Sonora and Mexico that affect us all; and personally going to the aid of members in need when it is most critical. I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, and let’s all look forward to a great 2021. —James Burbidge, President 520-732-1017 [email protected]

Our little newsletter is different this month, more modest. All we do is tempered by the reality we are living. Please remember how important it is to be kind and understanding as we work our way through these difficult times. Our concern for one another is paramount. Club Deportivo is doing the very best it can for its members and our neighbors. Let’s get through this together! — The Editor

and Charitable GivingHappy New Year, Club Members

The Club is on a roll, or a roller coaster, riding the COVID. But either way, it will prevail. Great times are ahead, and the

Club will be in a positive position. The Charitable Giving Committee has always done a fine job taking care of Kino’s needs, and now especially in these times. Thanks go to Shauna Smith, John Nicola, Luz Carmen Torres, and Victoria Galaz. Thanks to Sandie Burnam for her dedication in looking for ways to raise funds in these times. Pitch in. She deserves your help. Great thanks go out to the special people who have gone above with personal donations to the Charitable Giving Committee. You know who you are, and thanks for caring. I also want to thank the members who have come forward to help the Health & Welfare Project continue to serve the community in case of an emergency, and for the dedication of members who watched over the radio for close to 10 months.

👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋 Please, as members, share your thoughts and ideas with the Board about how we can move forward and keep this Club going into 2021 and beyond. As Community Outreach Liaison, I’m asking that we all cooperate to benefit each other everyday. This COVID is a challenge in our day-to-day lives, but we can be thankful for being here in Kino. It’s important to stay strong and positive, and the time will come when we can again say that this is paradise. Thanks to all for the support that has risen up to help each other at this time of need. Reach out if you need anything at all! And let’s go forward into 2021 with a positive outlook! Sincerely, —Craig Gresham, 2nd VP for Community Outreach

Update from the Health & Welfare Project (as of December 27, 2020)

The Red Cross is still not open, but their ambulance service is running as it normally would. If you need ambulance service, call 911 and explain what kind of ambulance is needed, since there are special precautions to be taken if it is a COVID possibility. If there is no answer at 911, call the local police station (662-242-0032) and explain what type of patient it is.

A s we turn the annual corner to start 2021, we continue at least for a

while to face very uncertain times, both in our personal lives and at our Club. While we have sketched out some plans, it is unclear at this point if we will have the

opportunity to hold our January events. I am pleased to report that we were able to

successfully enjoy our annual Club Deportivo Christmas Dinner, even if it was take-out style!!! This was a bit of an experiment for

us, and we learned a few things along the way. Our goal, which I believe we achieved, was to prepare a quality meal and deliver it safely to our members. Our materials included three full ribeye roasts, 60 pounds of russet potatoes, 50 pounds of carrots, salad fixings, and 5 Costco choco-flan pies. Armed with 200 take-out containers and 350 little cups and lids, and the obligatory masks, gloves, sanitizer and wipes, our crew of 6 turned out 75 meals to serve members, sponsors, staff, and crew.

Getting Ready!!

…GO!!

Website: www.kinobayclubdeportivo.com

We did find that it was a bit of a stretch to prepare and deliver 75 meals from our home kitchens. We missed the big walk-in cooler, preparation tables, and ovens of our Club kitchen. Club roasting ovens helped solve our oven space issue, and we maxed out use of our two refrigerators, aided by a portable cooler. Things were a little hectic at delivery time, but in short order 67 to-go packages were delivered with only a few sets of utensils left behind. Thank you so much to our crew of Ron and Nancy Leetch, Butch and Rosie Geier, delivery support by George Hussey and Nancy Lewis, and of course my dear wife and super organizer Judy Hussey. Thank you also to our meal and entertainment sponsors Gayle Lenihan, Sandie and Robert Burnam, Francine and Jim Bailey, Kay and Tom Van Hee, Laurel Hakim, Darolyn and Erwin Perry, and Dorothy and Bob Hutton. For January, if the Club is able to open and operate, we are hoping to have a Roast Pork meal on Jan 16th organized by Craig Gresham and Pat Friesen, and the Club staff is organizing a member appreciation meal

on January 30th. We are truly appreciative of everyone helping with our meals and look forward to the days when we can all freely gather and break bread together again.

Stay Healthy and Safe —Rick

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

2021 has to be a better year, and the BAR is going to be a place to ring out the old and ring in a new. I hope to see you soon and make some plans to provide your favorites.

Here’s what might happen to get the Club started for the year. Some ideas that have been suggested include coming up with some snacks and carry-outs for Fridays, and outdoor bar plans. Craig and I have been talking about trying to provide a carry-out, or—if you like—an eat it and stay for a couple drinks under the palapa. If anyone has suggestions about what this BAR GUY might do to provide a “camaraderie" event, I’m open for suggestions. The Liquor price seems to be holding, so no price increase is planned, at least at this time. Look forward to seeing everyone soon. Have a safe trip back to Kino, and let’s get things back to some kind of NORMAL, whatever that is. …THE BAR GUY, LOOKING FOR A SHOT IN THE ARM AND A SOCIAL SHOT OUTSIDE AT THE CLUB… —Paul Stanley, Bar Director 602-463-2363 or [email protected]

Indoor ActivitiesHappy New Year to Everyone!!

I hope everyone had a fun time on New Year's Eve. At this moment I’m not sure

what, if anything, we were able to do that night at the Club, but I promise a big whoop-de-do when we are finally back in the Club for good! Thank you to all our wonderful helpers and staff for keeping things going until that day when we no longer have to wear long-johns to Social Hour and exercise in our parkas! We will be working hard to come up with new (or renewed) activities when we can gather again safely. Right now, I'm thankful for so few cases of COVID in Kino and can't wait to see our returning members and any new members who have joined Club Deportivo. Thanks again, —Anne Stern, Indoor Activities Director

H oping everyone had a great holiday, all things considered.

The fountain at the building entrance has been removed and flowers planted in the surrounding base. I am looking into a total building Surge Protector for the club. We have talked to an electrician and are waiting for an estimate. The building monitor had to be replaced due to a power surge. Let’s hope 2021 will be better for all. —John Nicola, Director, Maintenance & Construction

Feliz Ano Nuevo, Amigos,

M acho Macho and Donkey Hotey here. Remember us? We were both featured in KBNET news, looking for sponsors

to help us end our days of out-of-control cavorting and “serenading the ladies” about town. Well, you came through, and though we each lost a couple of “close friends,” our lives are now much less complicated. Instead of bolting across town to follow a scent, we chill and enjoy the great beach and weather Kino has to offer. Donkey even gets to sit outside his fence now, while still leashed, as he has total control of his Casanova instincts! Thanks to KBSNA, the whole process—from transport, sleepy time, surgery and recovery—went smoothly, and we experienced no problems. In fact, while we were waiting in our kennels, a number of dogs from both Old and New Kino were lined up in kennels waiting to do their part to reduce the number of homeless puppies, as their humans have heard about this great service to our local community! Your donations have made a big impact, and KBSNA has been able to fund the spay and neuter of 7-10 dogs each week. We hope they can keep up this pace in the weeks and months ahead. We would like to report that surgeries for all our fellow canines have gone well, and we have not lost any of our pals in the process. This can be a challenge for the medical staff and volunteers, as we poor street dogs come in for surgery with no available medical history to share with them. Many of us suffer from a very common tick-borne disease here in Kino, and that can compromise our health. After we have been sterilized, KBNSA volunteers follow up by phone or visits to make sure we are safely recovered. Your donations not only pay for our sterilization but provide us with rabies, anti-parasite and antibiotic injections. And while in recovery, we get a nice-smelling flea and tick spray. I won’t go so far as to say this was like a day at the Doggie Spa, but the attention and treatment we received earns a big TWO TAILS UP!! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts! —Macho Macho, Donkey Hotey, and all of our canine amigos of the Kino community
