We have a meet-ing scheduled for December 6th to hand out ticket packages to our cruisers. When you read this article we will have about 6 weeks before we sail. We sail on Monday, January 18, 2016 returning on Friday, Janu-ary 22, 2016. We sail on the Crown Princess from San Pedro, a day at sea, stopping in Santa Barbara, then on to a stop in En-senada Mexico, then back to San Pedro. 1941: When the U.S. enters World War II, the Order’s outreach to soldiers is conducted via the National Catholic Community Service organization. The NCCS models many of its programs on the Order’s successful WWI efforts. 1944: The Order creates a $1 million trust fund for the education of children of members who lost their lives in or as a result of World War II. This evolves into the current scholarship fund for use at Catholic colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. 1945: John E. Swift is elected supreme knight. Among his first initiatives is to authorize funding for full-page advertisements in 12 major U.S. newspapers and five Canadian papers highlighting the dangers of communism. The ad offers a free copy of Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen’s pamphlet, “Communism, the Opium of the Peo-ple.” 1946: The Order launches its Crusade for the Preservation and Promotion of American Ideals. Educational pamphlets on com-munism and the dangers of secularism are published and distrib-uted. By August 1948, there are more than 1,300 K of C discus-sion groups. 1947: Several hundred radio stations broadcast K of C-sponsored programs with the titles “Safeguards of America” and “Foundations of Our American Ideals.” 1951-1960: “One Nation Under God” The Knights of Columbus initiated a campaign in 1951 to lobby for the public adoption of the phrase “under God” in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. The Order’s Board of Directors had amended the pledge’s recitation at Fourth Degree assembly meet-ings and encouraged congressional representatives to adopt the same language nationwide. One year after Supreme Knight Hart took office in 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law that officially added the words “under God” to the pledge.

INSURANCE REPORT

Scrooge Didn’t Believe We can all remember the story of Scrooge and his failure to believe in the spirit of Christmas. To all but the Scrooges of the world, the celebration of the birth of Christ brings with it a warm feeling of family ties, a joy and pleasure that our faith brings to others. That same warm feeling comes from owning life insurance. Just knowing that, because of what you have planned, your loved ones will have joys and comforts for years to come if something should happen to you. I don’t think Scrooge would have believed in life insurance either, but men of good will do. And the world is a better place because of them. Through life insurance, they know that comfort and security will not be for only one day, but in-stead, a gift that will provide for their loved ones for years to come. This Christmas, give a gift of security and protection. I hope to hear from you. Happy and Holy Holidays to all of you, Willie Romero FICF

I don't think it is too early to start thinking about our annual fishing trip. How many times have you said to yourself that you should go on the trip at least once? This trip should be on your bucket list. Start thinking now and be ready when the next trip comes around. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Bishop Creek area of the Eastern Sierra's is be held on the 1st weekend of October. Join me and 40-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. In addition to the South Fork of Bishop Creek that runs through the campground, there are the South Lake, North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake 2 fishing areas nearby. The event is held at the Creekside RV Park with campsites, RV sites, and trailers available for rent. You must make your own reservation for sites. They hold a few sites for us but they are first come-first serve. Contact the office at Creekside for a reservation of your desired site. Be sure to tell them that you will be part of our group. They may be reached at 760-873-4483. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, de-pending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games when there are enough interested players. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sunday morning breakfast. Beautiful mountain (elevation 8300 ft at the campgrounds) scenery, good fishing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and the creeks. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that our drought ends before we have more serious water shortages and possible rationing. Special Note: The pond within the Creekside Campgrounds continues to be under control of the California Department of Fish and Game. They stock the pond on their schedule. All normal Fish and Game laws apply. Some of us made reservations for next year's trip as we checked out. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Eastern Sierra's is held annually on the 1st weekend of October. For more information, please contact me at a Council or Assembly Event or call me.

4TH DEGREE CORNER-ASSEMBLY 2557 DEACON’S CORNER Jubilee Of Mercy

As we know the church is about to embark on a Holy Year of Mercy, starting with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion, 2015, and going through the Solemnity of Christ the King, 2016. How do we prepare for the Jubilee of Mercy? The diary of St. Faustina Kowalska - Divine Mercy in My Soul - is a good starting point. In her diary, St. Faustina records that Jesus Himself pro-vided three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: “the first - by deed; the second - by word; the third - by prayer. In these degrees is contained the fullness of mercy” (742) BY DEED Pope Francis writes, “It is my burning desire that, during this Ju-bilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiri-tual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our con-science, too often grown dull in the face of poverty.” Brother Knights, we must take it upon ourselves to know and practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. BY WORD As knights we must spread the word of God to others, especially those who do not know Him. Jesus’ words to St. Faustina: “I grant you as many graces as you can hold. As often as want to make Me happy, speak to the world about My great and unfa-thomable mercy.” In this Jubilee year, spreading devotion to the merciful heart of Jesus will be a total outpouring of mercy on humanity. BY PRAYER Doing Works of Mercy is vital, but without prayer, we run the risk of becoming simply good-willed social workers during the Jubi-lee of Mercy. This year we must develop a prayer life so power-ful that we will receive as much, but only as much as we ar-dently desire and ask for. We must ask for great mercy. And so brother Knights, let us go out into the world spreading mercy by “deed”, “word”, and “prayer”. Deacon Terry

CATHOLIC CHARITIES WILL BE READY FOR SYRIANS

The Obama administration’s response has been called a “Band-Aid” for Syria. Since the

civil war began almost five years ago, the United States has issued refugee visas to less

than 1,500 Syrians.

In September, Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new plan, with the U.S. rais-

ing its figure for all refugees from 70,000 to 85,000 this fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

He said the overall figure will include at least 10,000 Syrians. The total will climb to

100,000 in 2017, including even more Syrians.

“In light of this global emergency situation, we urge the United States to lead a compre-

hensive global initiative in partnership with European and other states to improve ac-

cess to protections for refugees,” stated the Human Rights First organization.

Together with 14 other Democrats, Senator Richard J. Durbin from Illinois wrote a let-

ter praising President Obama for his pledge to take 10,000 Syrian refugees. The con-

gressman urged the president to admit 65,000 more Syrian aliens. Senator Chris S.

Murphy of Connecticut said doing so little was risky.

“Do we think we make this country more safe from terrorism by showing a cold-

heartedness to this refugee crisis?” he asked. “I think the answer is no.” – who said

this?

Pope Francis has also weighed in on the issue. During his Sept. 24 address to Congress,

he told senators and house representatives they must respond to the refugee crisis in a

“humane, just and fraternal” way.

Human rights organizations have pointed out that the U.S. granted asylum to 111,000

Vietnamese refugees in 1979 and another 207,000 the next year. And during the Mariel

boatlift, around the same time, the U.S. gave sanctuary to more than 120,000 Cuban

refugees. After Sept. 11, 2001, refugee resettlement in the United States dropped to 27,131 in 2002. Since then, however, numbers have steadily risen to 69,987 last year, close to the 70,000 cap.

Brothers, If you have not already done so, you should be gearing up for the poster contest. The Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest allows young people to engage their creative talents while remembering the true meaning of Christmas. The contest is open to young peo-ple ages 5-14 and divided into three age groups. I would encourage you to contact your Religious Ed office or parish school to take part as this is a good way to introduce the Knights to the fathers of contestants who may be potential candidates for membership. For information on the contest or to order material, visit knights-gear.com, kofc.org/forms or call 203-752- 4016. With Winter fast approaching you also can contact Knightsgear.com for the Coats For Kids information. Sadly, many children face the prospect of going without a warm coat. Providing kids with warm coats is the goal of the Coats for Kids program. Councils that fulfill all the requirements of this “featured program” purchasing and distributing at least eight cases of coats - will fulfill all four requirements of the Youth Activity category for the Columbian Award. This something your council or your individual family should do. You can purchase high-quality, brand new winter coats for boys and girls. Coats are available in boxes of 12 (boys or girls) and contain the following youth sizes: 2 small, 4 medium, 4 large and 2 extra large for only $220! Last month Archbishop Jose Gomez called on the Knights to take on the petition drive for the referendum to overturn the horrible assisted suicide bill that our “Catholic” Gov-ernor signed. I am proud that we had nearly 100 participation in our district and we got over 2,000 signatures. Let’s keep working on those membership numbers, as the Columbian year is nearly half over. Wear those badges each week at mass and keep a form 100 handy at all times! Our next first Degree will be Wednesday, December 9th at Council 5803 hall in Simi Valley. We will also have a 2nd degree coming up in anticipation of the 3rd degree on January 30th in Oxnard. As the holiday season is upon us, please remember this is not always a happy time for others.. Please pick up the phone and call a widow of a deceased brother. Ask your pastor what you can do for those most in need. I wish each of you and your families a good Ad-vent season. May God bless you and your loved ones and may He comfort any of you in physical or mental distress. Cliff Wirtz District Deputy – 79 805-208-8970

Knights of Columbus Bowling League Our 2015-2016 season continues on Thursdays thru May 2016. We are bowling with 10 teams of 4 bowlers per team this sea-son. If we have more interest in the future we can add more teams. Think about joining us this season as a sub, or add your name to the wait list for a regular position. We can always use subs and our fees are reasonable. Only $3 for a sub after you pay your USBC Sanctioning fees of $20 (estimated). Let me know if you are interested in joining as a regular bowler or substitute. Returning bowlers have priority on being a regular again. Additional new regular bowlers will be asked/allowed to bowl with the following order: being a Knight, a Knight's spouse, or part of a Knight's family (age 18 and older). Friends, neighbors, coworkers or others with an existing regular bowler as a sponsor will be considered as space allows.
