Section #: Name: River Terminology Scene #: 10 Image: BRLL_10.png From (Descending Banks.png)

Video: Animation: Text on Screen Left Descending Bank Right Descending Bank “Going North” “Going South” Action(s): Narration BRLL_10.mp3 Left and right descending banks is the way to refer to a side of the river when pointing out an object of interest or a direction to steer. No matter which way you are heading on a river, the left descending bank will always point to same side of the river, the left when heading downstream and the right when heading upstream. On rivers by convention the expression “going North” means going upstream and the term “going South” means going downstream, regardless of actual compass heading. Think of yourself on the Mississippi River. Even with all of its twists and turns going downstream means you are headed towards the Gulf of Mexico, which is south.
