Hi Squadron Mates,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the recent passing of a good friend and squadron member P/C “Kip” Hine, AP. The details for his memorial service were sent out via Sail Angle, and are reprinted below in

Tracey Eno and Lt/C Laura Magdeburger, SN, are given a fond farewell before they depart for sunny Florida and new adventures

Dear Squadron Friends,

I want to share some big news with you! Tracey and I are moving to Orlando, Florida next month!!!I have accepted a job as an Aquarist for Disney at Epcot’s The Seas: Nemo and Friends. The aquarium has over two

hundred species of sea life including dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, stingrays and a 500 lb. grouper, as well as lots of tropical fish. The tank is 200 feet in diameter, 27 feet deep and the glass is 8 inches thick. I’m looking forward to working in a 6 million gallon exhibit! They collect fish for their exhibit in the Florida Keys. I imagine that having all the squadron training and my Captain’s license may have helped me get the job. Thanks to all my teachers for everything I’ve learned over the years. I owe huge thanks to Andy Barr, who connected me with the Squadron back in 2006. He and I met when he was volunteering at Calvert Marine Museum where I work. Our first PRSPS meeting was on a cold, dark November night - at the old Lenny’s. Andy & Pat Barr, Pat Farrar, and Cecilia & Roy Snoddy and others made us feel really welcome. We’ve made a lot of excellent friends and had so much fun with all of the raft ups,

cruises and social events. We will miss you guys! The good news is that “forever friends” keep in touch, so we don’t need to say goodbye. Our house is on the market. We’ve been there 11 years and never planned to leave - so it’s been very well maintained. Who do you know who would love a 3br/2 bath rambler on a ¾ acre wooded lot in a quiet neighborhood in Lusby? Cove Lake has been a great place to live - the neighbors are awesome and there’s a private beach and boat launch. When you look across the cove, you can see Cove Point lighthouse. Please spread the word to family & friends and share the link: http://www.zillow.com/homes/11440-cove-lake-road-lusby-md_rb/ I will also be selling my boat, a 13’ Boston Whaler Sport, 1984. It has a brand new trailerable sunbrella boat cover, a 30HP 1997 Yamaha outboard engine and a 2003 EZ Loader trailer. It is the highly sought after classic hull design. It’s been well loved and maintained, and has a beautiful mahogany interior. It is a great little boat to pull up at local squadron raft-ups with. Who do you know who would love to zip around in a Whaler? Call me, Laura Magdeburger at 410-330-9800.We’re really excited, and at the same time, really sad to go. Please keep our phone numbers and keep in touch! Laura Magdeburger: 410-330-9800. Tracey Eno: 443-624-8022.

And DEFINITELY, when you come to Orlando or Disney, look us up! I would love to see you and give you a behind the scenes tour at The Seas!!! Love from Laura & Tracey

Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C Pat Farrar, AP

While I had great plans to sneak in a few additional around-the-creek cruises in the unusually warm month of December, Sue and I logged only two. Three if you count the Lighted Boat Parade. I was really looking forward to a Christmas Day cruise, but the rainy weather put a damper on things. I’m still looking

for that New Years Eve Midnight cruise. Maybe next year. Thanks global warming…Okay, let’s look at our accomplishments for December:The annual Solomons Lighted Boat Parade, held on Saturday the 5th, went off without a hitch. The weather was outstanding. Sixteen boats participated in the event. This year, as in the past 5+ years, Patuxent River Sail and Power Squadron aided in the coordination of the event. P/C Pat Farrar, AP, was the cruise event coordinator and P/C Bob Prior, JN, and Cheryl Budd, JN, served as the event judging coordinators. Thanks to all the members that helped support the colorful event. In lieu of our monthly dinner meeting, we had our annual Christmas party at the Georges’. P/Cs Anita and Lee George once again opened their home to the squadron in order to hold the annual event. Thanks to all those that attended. As always, the food counters were overflowing with wonderful treats. We once again collected toys to support the Toys for Tots program. You guys did a wonderful job in helping to fill two toy drop-off boxes. The folks at Mission BBQ were quite happy we selected their store as our drop-off point. Thanks again to Lee and Anita for welcoming us in their home. Looking ahead at January and beyond, we have the following events planned:Kicking off the month is the annual Land Locked Rendezvous on Saturday, January 9th. See below for details, and I hope to see you all there.

Next on the list is our January 14th monthly dinner meeting to be held at Solomons Kingfishers restaurant. Dinner starts at 1730 (5:30PM), we will have some form of short presentation starting at 1830 (6:30PM), with a business meeting to follow.Looking a bit down the road, Our good Commander has declared February 21st to be our Founders day celebration (actually that is when Calvert Marine Museum has an opening). Look for more information in next month’s True Readings regarding this event.

Just a reminder of the events to be held on Saturday, January 9th.The day will start with the Funeral services for our dear friend P/C Kip Hine, AP. Services will start at 11:00 AM at Southern Memorial Gardens in Dunkirk. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calvert Library, where Kip was formerly President of the Calvert Library Association as well as having twice been appointed by the Governor as Chair of the Maryland Advisory Council on Libraries. Squadron members are asked to wear their Blue Blazers.

The day will end with our squadron’s annual Landlocked Rendezvous to be held that evening. Our Good Commander and Admiral Lenore will be hosting the event at their home, and the festivities will begin at 1900 (7pm). Bring heavy hors d’oeuvres to share, and if you are planning to attend please RSVP.

Directions to their home are as follows:

1. From Route 235 heading north, turn right on to Town Creek Drive or if heading south, turn left on to Town Creek Drive.

2. Continue on Town Creek Drive and then turn right on to East Sunrise Drive.

3. Turn Left on to River Hill Road. 46135 River Hill in Lexington Park is your destination.

2016 Annual Meeting

14 - 21 February 2016

Orlando, FL

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas will enjoy a Happy New Year. We are winding down all of our current classes right now. We have administered and I have collected the Seamanship exams, and will have sent them off for grading by the first of the year. I believe the

same is also true for Advanced Piloting. The next task will be to roughly outline our next year of courses and seminars. W are planning to hold more of the state sponsored “Boat Maryland” courses in 2016, and we will try to organize a number of other United States Power Squadrons courses around them. Thank you to all for your support of our educational mission throughout the year, and I’m looking forward to another great year of PRSPS educational opportunities.

Change of Watch 2016P/C Barbara Walter, AP

Save the date. Patuxent River Sail and Power Squadron’s 63rd Annual Change of Watch and installation of the 2016 Bridge will be held on Saturday, 12 March at The Riverview Restaurant, Asbury Solomons. This is the same spacious and scenic venue that we used last year. We will have three menu choices: Salmon Wellington, Herb Roasted Veal Chop or Rosemary Roasted Chicken. More details and the registration form will be in February’s issue of True Readings.

As in past years, donations will be accepted for the customary raffle to help defray the expense of officer flags, plaques and guests. The raffle chair position is open and in dire need of someone to step up and take charge, since Laura and Tracey are moving to Florida. Volunteers, please contact Lt/C Pat Farrar, AP, at 410 610-3590 or email: [email protected]. If you have a donation, please call Pat to coordinate a drop off.

Calling all Past Commanders. The traditional “P/C’s Basket of Cheer” has become the high spot of the raffle, and your donation will be gratefully accepted at our next monthly meeting or at Founders’ Day. Thank you in advance for your support.

January Safety ReportP/Lt/C Bob Stammerjohn, SN

As you can see, our unseasonably warm weather has come to an end, and our boats should have already been prepared for the truly cold months ahead. Whether you trailer your boat, haul it out and store it “on the hard” or leave it in the water, don’t forget to take a good look at it from time to time to ensure that it is not filling up with snow, rainwater, or bay /

river water. Believe it or not, many “sinkings” happen right at the slip due to an undetected leak or failed / frozen bilge pump. I have also seen some trailered boats that are parked with their bow lower than the stern, becoming an excellent collector of rain, snow and ice that are not friendly to your hull or its contents. While you are high and dry you can also get ahead of spring tasks like changing your zincs and maintaining through-hull fittings and sea cocks. An ounce of prevention is preferable to gallons and gallons of water in the boat!
