the Command postBy Cdr Thomas Nolan, P

I would like to thank all the members who worked the Pompano Beach Nautical Flea Market. We had lots of help, which made set-up and breaking down very easy. The members made it work.

I would like to try something new at the March meeting. I would like the instructors, proctors, bridge and executive committee members to bond with and help our newer members feel as important as those who have been members

for a long time. We’re going to be experimenting with a different seating arrangement. I am asking for your cooperation with this.

The other thing I would like to see is when we do a raft-up or a rendezvous, the people with boats offer a ride to members who do not have a boat. Those with boats who are attending would notify the event coordinator and let him or her know how many members they could accommodate. Members without boats would also contact the event coordinator to find out if there is space on a boat. This was done at last year’s fishing tournament and it worked out well. There were five boats with a good mix of members.

Another thought is having a get together on the third Thursday of the month. The bar will be open and it will be known as “Thirsty Thursday”. It would be an ideal time for members to donate ideas to help the squadron grow. These ideas can vary from suggestions for raft-ups, trips, classes, outside functions and whatever else comes to mind.

There is also some bad news this month. P/C James Hamberick, SN, passed away 4 February 2013. He supported Lt Emil Jensen in facilitating the purchase of the squadron building. That was a major step in the history of this squadron.

There will be two date changes for the executive board meetings. The first will be for July. That executive board meeting will be held on June 27th since the normal meeting date would have been July 4th.

The second change will be the September meeting, which would normally be held on Sept. 5th. It will be held on August 22nd instead. This is because of the national meeting being held in San Antonio, Texas, during the first week of September. This will allow any member who would like to attend the national meeting to be able to do so.

Anyone wishing to place an article in the mariner should submit the article to P/Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, as well as to our secretary, Lt/C Jan Furtado, S.

marine indUstries is planning a waterfront cleanup and ask that everyone attend. The date is 16 March 2013.

Executive Officer

Valentine’s Day. Ahhh…the feelings of love. Did you know Valentine’s Day is the most celebrated holiday around the world after New year’s Day according to Wikipedia? Proof that when everything else is said and done, all we really want is love. I am so fortunate for having my Valentine, Richard, by my side all year long. His article in last month’s Mariner was such a wonderful surprise! How can one not feel blessed.

I also feel blessed that Cdr. Tom Nolan took the reins with the Pompano Beach Nautical Flea Market and did a fabulous job running the show. Of course, he had help by many members of our Squadron: Rich Walker, Ron Babin, Joe Caraccia, Dave Persing, Al Furtado, Alan Taub, Dave Nace, Serge Marti-Volkoff, Richard Porter, David Fahrenbach, Bill Pringle and his son, Chad Pringle. Thank you to all of you for all of your time and donations. The Squadron made approximately $1,100 from this weekend event.

We hopefully will have the Dania Beach Nautical Flea Market coming up March 14 – 17. If you haven’t volunteered in the past, you are really missing a fun event. PBPS works a food concession booth. All we have to do is sell the food. The very popular Grampa’s Bakery in Dania Beach cooks the food. There is free parking and volunteers get a free pass into the Flea Market. After working a shift, you are free to enjoy the day walking around and seeing all of the items for sale. There really is something there for everyone! Sign-up sheets will be on the tables at the March Dinner Meeting. If you have any questions, please see me!

I am very pleased to announce that our new Vessel Examiner Committee Chairman in Aldo Aurilio. I know that he is going to do a great job! Let us thank Aldo for coming forward to head up this extremely worthwhile committee. Thank you again Aldo!!

Please check out and ‘Like’ the Pompano Beach Sail & Power Squadron Facebook Page. There is a link posted by James McEntee, who took lots of wonderful pictures of our 2013 Change of Watch. There are also a few current pictures from the Pompano Beach Nautical Flea Market. Please feel free to post your comments or upload your own Squadron photos to the page. All of our course start dates and events will be added as well. This will make an easy way to stay on top of things happening at PBPS!

Thank you for making my first month on the Bridge an enjoyable one. Please get involved at whatever level you can, make new friends, and most importantly…be sure to kiss your Valentine every day!

throUgh the porthole The Admin’s Perspective: By Lt/C Marshall Bellin, P

As I enter into this new position, I find myself questioning the sanity and decision making abilities of the Nominating Committee. To quote a high ranking member of this organization “I am operating well above my pay grade.” I have not been a Power Squadron member very long (2 1/2 years) and am still finding my way around. I have met most of the squadron members and have found everyone to be friendly, gracious, and eager to be of assistance.

When I accepted this position, I pledged to do my best. I knew about many of the challenges I will be facing. I have attempted to surround myself with a staff of excellence to hide my deficiencies and shortcomings. The Administrative Officer’s staff includes newcomers, Executive Committee members, Past Commanders, and a Past District Commander. I have tried to match people with positions. The Assistant Administrative Officer (Joe Caraccia) is well-known, very knowlegeable, and is an outstand-ing addition to the staff. Hopefully the expertise and knowledge of this staff will be enough to get me through the upcoming year.

Now to the serious business. The Power Squadron is a community service organization. As such, we operate on a limited budget and rely heavily on volunteers from our membership. I need assistance in many areas that the administrative staff alone cannot cover. The dinner at each general meeting requires additional volunteers. Each month we need volunteers to decorate and set up the hall for the meeting. The marvelous meals are prepared by our members, and I need volunteers to prepare and cook these meals each month. A greeter and money collector are needed. Also, volunteers are needed to assist with serving the meal and with cleanup after the dinner. As you can see, a lot of people are involved at each meeting. i need volUnteers for everY month—marCh throUgh deCemBer. Please call me, or email me, or see me in person if you can assist in any way. We cannot assure that we can continue with this endeavor without your assistance.

Thank you to Sue Blanton and Aldo Aurilio for the fabulous dinner we enjoyed in February. Thank you to all those who assisted with decorating and setting up, as greeters, servers, and cleanup crew. Thanks to Judy Somerset and the calling committee. your efforts are greatly appreciated by everyone. memBership: No new members have pledged at this time. faCilities: The awning over the entry is being replaced. There is hot water in both restrooms. The city of Pompano Beach has advised us that we must hook up to the city sewer system. Minor repairs are needed on the entry doors. The posts and hawsers around the building need maintenance. aCtivities: Lee Devane, Aldo Aurilio and I (mostly Lee and Aldo) have been planning sev-eral squadron-wide activities. There will be raftups, rendezvous, meet-and-greets, cruises, happy hours, and many more events to follow. We hope you will join us for the fun and fellowship at as many of these functions as possible. Stay tuned for times and places.

A leprechaun told me the Walkers will be cooking a delicious March dinner of corned beef and cabbage. Get your reservations in early!

First of all let me thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Squadron Education Officer (SEO) this year. I am very optimistic about our program. Secondly please note that this is the first time, that I know of, that our Squadron will have two unrelated Tom Nolan’s on the bridge at the same time! Tom (the commander) and I have had fun with all the mix ups over the years.

We have an exciting program this year. Let me introduce our education department leaders to you.

p/C ron Ziller is assistant seo and also the Chairman of local Boards for elective Courses. We are fortu-nate to have past Commander Ron Ziller on board who in addition to being assistant SEO will set the schedules for Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sail and Weather. Ron and Tom (the Commander) Nolan will also continue to offer our new exciting on-the-water instruction programs. We also plan to eventually offer the Boat Operator’s Certification Program that will certify USPS members at various levels of recreational boating proficiency. Please talk to Ron about which of these courses you would like to attend. Ron’s phone (201) 213-0072 email: [email protected]

p/lt/C howard Kaufman is the Chairman of local Boards public Boating. As you probably already know Howard was our previous SEO and he continually improved and honed our excellent eight week public boating program. I am glad Howard has agreed to stay on with the public boating program. Howard and I have also talked about offering the one day safe boating ABC course outside of our building. Many other squadron chapters offer the one day course with great success. Right now we are looking for a suitable location such as a community civic center, school, fire station etc. Please let us know your ideas.Howard’s phone: (561) 395-1705, email: [email protected]

lt Kirk martin sn is the Chairman of local Boards for advanced Courses. Most of you know Kirk has been teaching Junior Navigation (JN) for several years and is one of our best instructors. This year he will be setting the schedules for the Advanced Courses which are Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, and Navigation. Please talk to Kirk about which of these courses you would like to attend. Kirk’s phone: (954) 344-9089, email: [email protected]

In addition to being seo I will Chair our seminar program. We will continue to offer seminars at Marine Max and I am looking for other outside locations. Please let me know if we can have a seminar at your community cen-ter, club or marina. We may also offer some at our building. Please let me know what seminars you are interested in attending. Phone: (954) 421-0502, email: [email protected]

Lt Marion Chafitz will be our Chairman of Teaching Aids. Marion has won awards for her teaching aids over the years and will work with our instructors and membership on the development of new methods to enhance our classroom experience. Please discuss your ideas for new teaching aids with Marion.Marion’s phone: (954) 786-4714 email: [email protected]

A big THANKS goes out to all those who help with the PBSPS education program. There are many who help as proctors, setting things up, paperwork, instructors and other duties. Thank you all!

Course Spotlight Weather

The safety and comfort of those who venture out-on-the water have always been weather

dependent. In this course students will become keener observers of the weather, but weather

observations only have meaning in the context of the basic principles of meteorology — the science of

the atmosphere. The course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with

one another and reflects the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the Internet. It is

a general weather course benefiting those sitting in their living rooms, as much as those standing behind

the helm.

Each student receives: a Weather Manual - USPS Weather - an explanatory text with full color

photographs and drawings covering weather in the United States and its coastal and inland waters; a set

of three Daily Weather Maps - learning aids with a complete explanation of map symbols designed to

develop weather map reading and analysis skills; and NOAA’s Sky Watcher Chart - a reference to assist

in identifying cloud types – helpful indicators of approaching weather.

Sign up for our Weather course today !

TREASURER’S REPORTBy Lt/C David Nace, S

Every so often, I believe that all of our membership would like to be aware of the financial condition of the squadron beyond my comment at the monthly dinner meetings that “the report is on file with the Secretary”. In this case, my report to you is very favorable due in part to the many con-tributions of time that many of you have made in behalf of the squadron.

The year ended December 31, 2012 showed a near record profitability and cash level for the squadron (our goal is to breakeven each year) due to unexpected increases in income from special events like the Pompano Beach and Dania Beach Nautical Flea markets as well as higher donation income

derived by renting parking spaces during the work week to two local businesses. There was also very good expense control exercised in most areas but particularly involving building expenses (we lucked out in certain cases) and administrative costs. The fact that we were profitable in 2013 allows us to invest the income until such a time as a major building or other expense is incurred like the long awaited parking lot repaving and other capital improvements that may be required in the near future, however, because we have been successful in improving our bottom line performance, the Executive Committee has agreed that there shall be no change in annual membership dues for 2013 from the squadron level. In this era of constantly increasing costs, we’re proud to say that we haven’t raised membership dues or dinner donations in over four years. Please feel free to contact me if you would like any more information about our financial situation.

sick Bay By D/Lt Jean Devane

Unfortunately, we have four deaths to report this month. Mary Mitura, mother of member Barbara Garito, Marjorie Fritschel, a former auxiliary president. Joyce Tawns, also an auxiliary member, all passed away recently. And we were also just notified that Jim Hambrick left us.

Jim was a former commander and an avid golfer. He joins his wife Fran who pre-deceased him. Both Jim and Fran helped with the refurbishing of this former church into our grand base. They not only contributed their time and money, but Jim helped out with the plans as he was an architect.

Our prayers and sympathy go out to all the families.

Another former commander, Clyde Ambrose, recently suffered a stroke, but is reported to be on the way to recovery.

Judy Pinkston was in the hospital for tests and continues her treatments

Again, if you know of anyone who is not feeling well, please call me at 954-782-9451 so I may send out a card from the squadron.

southeast florida’s district 8 of the United States Power Squadrons® has been honored with the “distinguished district Civic service award.”

This identifies it as the top district in the nation according to a BoatUS/ United States Power Squadrons® analysis. The recognition is the most important Power Squadron award and names the district top among the thirty-three in the nation.

The district’s accomplishments included extraordinary support for its squadrons in providing: public boating courses, community involvement, and service, vessel safety checks done in cooperation with the United States Coast Guard, and maintenance of its area’s nautical chart data for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In addition, the district led its squadrons in important community outreach programs. Its area includes fourteen squadrons serving towns from the City of Sebastian on the Treasure Coast, down through Miami to Key West.

the award presentation was made at the power squadrons’ national meeting in Jackson-ville, florida to district 8 Commander Jack doyle by national Chief Commander John alter and BoatUs foundation’s asst. director of Boating safety, ted sensenbrenner.

DORIS’ DISK & DATA By Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

did YoU ever Wonder What the dUties of an editor Were?

The Editor reads the incoming articles and decides where to put them, and what format to use. In other words, the Editor decides how the finished product will look, and tries to make it not only readable but enjoyable as well.

There is also an Editor’s handbook that lays down a few suggestions (laws) to follow. For instance, the Officer’s Reports start the newsletter, followed by other things that the particular squadron wants reported in their paper. Usually they have a calendar in one form or another, Birthdays, District and National news, nautical laws, etc. The Editor is graded on the paper, which decides if it receives an award for the newsletter, or a letter telling them to get their act together! Once P/C Seth Towbis, AP, put the newsletter on the computer, instead of cut and paste method, he and I always received that award! I became Editor in 1992. I believe that the problems I have to solve on the computer keep my brain in good working order.

There is no description for a Business Manager in the Operations Manual or the By-Laws that I could find. Since Lt Dave Bruce gave up the job, I needed someone for that job on the MARINER. Barbara Garito said she was stressed out, but needed a simple job, and asked if I had heard of a committee looking for a member. I asked her to be my Business Manager, as I really needed one. She agreed when I told her it meant only two things; one to get people to sign up as sponsors (a euphemism for ads) and the other thing was to collect the yearly fee each year. She would keep a file on the few people we already have, and try to get a few more. That is it.

However, someone else told her of a ‘lead’ to go to the member as he needed someone to look at his website and lay out the announcement for him. Immediately, before she had even started, Barbara resigned!

I quickly told her that the idea was wrong, as I do all the layouts, even when people hand me their business card, as I have a limited space to work with. No one else puts the pages together. No one else decides layouts or setups. Barbara said she would take the job again. Good

I have two good proofreaders. One who reads everything and tells me the corrections, down to the smallest item, even if someone puts two spaces between words instead of one. Lt Kay Baker, S, is absolutely a brilliant proofreader, as well as in other ways, too. Sometimes I receive an article with a convoluted sentence that I cannot straighten out. Kay will solve the problem with a clear sentence. She is one smart lady. (Continued on next page)

DORIS’ DISK & DATA continuedBy Lt/C Doris Garner, AP, Editor

The other proofer is Lt Judith Pinkston, P, whose local knowledge and remembrance of past happenings is phenomenal. Plus she reads the obits daily, and calls me to report it. She has always been very aware of things and people in this area of South Florida.

When anything is successful there are always detractors, and it was suggested that if I scattered the ads throughout the paper, it would be more like a magazine. I told him that since I was a Capricorn, I liked things in order, and also, moving them every month not only made a lot more work, but people who wanted to see a certain ad would have to skim through the entire thing, instead of going to the center of the paper to find all of them. Having the articles in the same place each month, conforms to the rules of the USPS, plus moving them around each month runs the risk of leaving one out, by mistake.

I also read other newsletters and the internet to find aditional interesting articles. I really look forward to members and friends sending me nautical items. To all you newer members, please feel free to write up a trip you found interesting, or a strange sight on the water. I am sure there are a lot of stories out there that we’d love to read. Did you like last month’s article about the Captain rescuing four deer? I loved it!

Some members like to see the birthdays of other members, so I am fortunate to have Lt Ira Somerset, the Roster Chairman, send me a list each month. Please be sure to check out the roster to make sure that all your information is accurate and current. Ira also lists any changes to the Roster in the Mariner, which keeps us all up to date. Please send any changes to him as soon as they occur. Don’t assume he knows about those changes just because he knows you.

When the newsletter went on the internet, Lt/C Dave Nace, S, started keeping the mailing list, divided between those who get a blast and those who request a hard copy, so if you move, you should also let Dave know about it immediately. P/C Ronald Ziller, SN, sends out the blast to the members who get the email. D/Lt Al Furtado, SN, has put the MARINER in the web page with a button to click to have the newsletter open up.

D/Lt Jean Devane has a column called Sick Bay, where she tells about those of us who are ill or have passed away. She does other things as well, but not for the newsletter.

We have had other people do columns on Sail, Vessel Safety, Nautical Law, Repairs, Mainte-nence, Recipes and even more. If you are proficient at any of these, please volunteer to write a column. you can do it monthly or only once in a while.

I am thankful for all of the above! If not for them, I’d be doing it all by myself!

and you thought all i did was push a button!
