Friends, A few months ago, I shared the news with you there were some changes taking place in my role as Pastoral Leader. After 90 some letters were sent by you, and a few conversations took place with Bishop Ricken and me, and Bishop and all Pasto-ral Leaders, he has decided to put any changes on hold until July 1, 2021. This was great news to hear. Bishop wants to allow for more conversa-tion to take place with us and our priest celebrants. I am hoping he is open to a parish meeting as well. Thanks for all of the ways you have supported me, women in leadership, and the role of the laity in leadership. Whether you wrote letters, called and emailed, or talked to me after Mass, I appreciate your kindness and openness to my ministering here with you. My gratitude goes to Bishop Ricken as well for hearing your voices and for his willingness to enter into deeper conversation. Let us continue to hold one another in prayer. Blessings, Sr. Marla

Dear Friends,

Happy Father’s Day to all dads! I saw a

father’s day commercial which looked at all

of the ways dads have been able to connect

with their children during this work-from-

home and social distancing time. One dad

said, “I find they (the children) have confided in me more and I have

even confided in them.” In the busyness of life, it can be difficult to

find time to get to deeper conversations or not to fill our family time

with busyness as well. My prayer for all fathers - may you have time to

BE with your children and family.

I’ve shared with you before some of the things my dad taught us – the

importance of hard work, faith, civic responsibility and a love of music.

An image which comes to mind today is of my mom and dad, sitting

together on the edge of a hospital bed, holding hands. Dad was going

in for a 6-bypass heart surgery. They both were nervous. Up until that

time, I don’t remember them showing many signs of affection, at least

not openly. As we waited for him to come out of surgery, I thought

back to the ways they had shown their love for one another; ways I had missed.

When Dad came home from work, the first thing he would ask was,

“Where’s your mother?” Yes, he came home to his family every night,

but he mainly came home to mom. I saw this as well as they both aged.

If mom was out of the room or house for a while, he’d go looking for

her – to see what she was doing, but I also think to simply connect with her.

I remembered watching them dance to Lawrence Welk and Guy

Lombardo. I was impressed by how graceful they were and how well

they moved together. I don’t think it came from lessons as much as

from years of being together; of knowing one another; of growing

together as a couple.

I thought back to the smiles and laughter at the supper table. We kids

laughed along thinking we were in on the joke or comment, but I’m

sure it was the two of them teasing one another or remembering a time

of just the two of them.

I remembered Dad opening doors, stepping back so Mom could go to

communion first, and through the years showing us kids a gift he had

bought her. He was like nervous newlywed, with his only concern

being whether or not she would like it.

Sometimes our love is obvious and

spoken. Sometimes it is strongly shown by

our actions. Sometimes, it’s in the every-

day, smaller but steady signs we might miss

if we are not aware. I’m guessing most, if

not all dads, show their love in each of

these ways. Just as our dads do, so does

God. Signs of love are all around us. Let

us take time today to pray for a greater

awareness of those signs of love, and for

the ability to share love with others.

Blessings, Sr. Marla Clercx, Pastoral Leader

We plan to celebrate Mass June 28 at 9:30am

Depending on the evolving circumstances related to the coronavirus in the weeks and months ahead and in consultation with the Dioc-esan Monitoring Team, the decision was made to open churches for Mass at this time. Each parish has been given the flexibility to go back and forth between Return to Mass (with up to 25% occupancy), Commun-ion Outside of Mass, or Livestream only with Spir-itual Communion. We are allowed to have a maximum of 100 people in church. Because of this, people need to RSVP for Mass.

Please note: The Mass will still be livestreamed at 9:30am. However, keep in mind even the best computers and software are prone to unforeseen technical glitches.

Celebrating Mass — Churches Open

▪ Keep in mind that no one is required to attend Mass or receive Communion at this time.

▪ Anyone who is older than 65 or who has a compromised immune system is encouraged to stay home.

▪ In Christian Charity, anyone feeling ill or showing signs of illness such as fever, cough, flu-like symptoms (even if not COVID related) or if you’ve been recently exposed to someone who is ill or suspected of having COVID-19 or has COVID-19 should remain at home to prevent illness.

A message from your new Director of Liturgical Music

Our parish has always been known as a great “singing parish,” because we fully participate in all parts of the mass. However, in light of the current pandemic, we are asking you to view the cantor as the representative voice of the parish. We ask that you refrain from singing, and instead, use this time for prayerful reflection.

Choral directors and voice teachers, like myself, often use the term audiate when referring to “singing in your head,” which can be done even when there is no music present. Music education researcher, Edwin Gordon, coined the term audiation in 1975 to describe the cognitive process by which the brain gives meaning to musical sounds. According to Gordon, although music is not a language, the process is the same for audiating and giving meaning to music as for thinking and giving meaning to speech.

So, please sing with your hearts and your minds, rather than your voices. In our fast-paced lives, take this moment to listen, observe, and just “be.”

Because even when you sing in your head, singing is still praying twice.

Musically yours, Maria Hinnendael
