HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY____ “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” This quote from the Epistle of St. James, 1:17, not only provides a comforting image of God’s relationship with us but also offers a template for human parenting. Since this year’s Fathers’ Day coincides with the beginning of our challenge to return to community, words like “good gift,” “changeless” and so on invite usto move forward with charity and justice. To all the fathers, grandfathers, godfathers and father figures in our parish, best wishes and prayers on your special day. We apologize for the need to cancel the traditional “Fathers’ Day Novena.” The rescheduling of announ-ced Masses not celebrated during the sheltering took precedence over this devotional custom. ANNOUNCED MASSES____ During the months when Mass was not being celebrated publicly, dozens of intentions went un-fulfilled. In March, we began moving them to open dates in April, assuming -- incorrectly, as it turned

Page 3: Church of St. Joseph · 21/6/2020  · TWELFTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME JUNE 21, 2020 FATHERS’ DAY WEEKEND Church of St. Joseph Wurtsboro, NY 180 Sullivan St., Wurtsboro, NY 12790

out -- that public Masses would resume by Easter. We continued rescheduling intentions through the weeks of spring and summer, eventually having to reschedule some for a second time. Our calendar now has only a few scattered openings in mid- and late December. For those who need to know the date on which their intention is now scheduled, a list will be available on the display table in the rear of the church. You also may call the rectory, 888-4522, or e-mail us: [email protected]. AVE MARIA GUILD NEWS The Ave Maria Guild mem-bers attend Mass at 9 AM this Sunday, June 21. On Monday, June 22, the monthly meeting will be held, as usual, at 7 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30. The Art Show and other summer ac-tivities will be discussed. Masks will be worn and proper distancing observed. No refreshments can be served. RENOVATION UPDATE Construction has begun on the basement of the Church to fulfill the requirements of the Village’s building codes. Over the next few months, there may be the occasional minor inconvenience to our people. ( “Dig we must, etc., etc.” ) While it is true that Churches are exempt from many code provisions, it would have been expensive, and taken years, for a legal challenge to work its way through the courts -- time and money the parish does not have. Our builder is Billman Ross, a construc-tion company from Fair Oaks, noted in Wurtsboro for their beautiful rendering of our new library. The company is confident that the hall will be ready when our children in Religious Education return in the Fall. ( Of course, if distance learning remains the policy for children in New York State, that will be moot. ) Now that we are worshiping in the summer church hall, having access to our basement meeting area becomes even more important. When construc-tion is near completion, those who made donations of $ 500 or more to the Building Fund will be contacted regarding wording on the memorial donors’ plaque.

COUNCIL MEETINGS & NEWS_____ 1. The June meeting of the Parish Council will take place, as scheduled, on Thursday, June 25, at 7 PM. We will meet in the summer hall for proper distancing and masks will be required. 2. The Finance Council needs to meet in the near future. Members will be contacted soon to choose a date convenient to all. COLLECTION REPORT: JUNE 13 & 14

MASS ATTENDANCE COLLECTION __ Mail-in donations $ 3,140.00 5 PM 40 $ 999.00 9 AM 55 $ 1,505.00 11 AM 45 $ 826.00 Totals 140 $ 6,470.00 * *

* * We “tithed” just over 3 % of this total to the twin causes of our Missions here in the USA and assistance to the Church in Latin America, plus an additional $ 100 toward last month’s collection for the churches in Eastern Europe. Those three causes totaled $ 602, leaving $ 6,280 for the Offertory. “150 CLUB” NEWS_____ The winner for June 14 was # 97, Chris(tine) Herschel. For more information, please call Kate, 888-2652. BEYOND HEADLINES & SOUNDBITES___ What finally pushed the ongoing saga of Covid-19 out of the headlines and lead footage was a crisis of almost equal, if very different import. We have seen disturbing images of police exceeding legitimate use of force in subduing suspects. We have witnessed rioting and looting of an intensity not seen since the late 1960s. We all thought we had moved beyond such violence; we have not. Democracy only thrives under the rule of law. Citizens bestow a great deal of power and authority on law enforcement for precisely that reason. But the essential mark of a democracy is the freedom of its people. And the pledge of police is to “preserve and protect.” If some citizens, because of race, ethnicity, or any other condition of their lives, are mal-served and under-protected, there is a problem. A demo-cracy moves to ameliorate that problem by enacting or amending its laws, not by dismantling history. But we cannot legislate people’s prejudices -- only their overt actions. What do we do about bigotry --- whether hatred of non-whites, of gays, of Jews, of migrants, of Catholics, of liberals, of conservatives ? Catholics are expected to have custody over their thoughts and to rise above their baser instincts and ruinous emotions. It is hard work. It cannot be done without grace -- the grace of Christ’s presence in Holy Communion; the grace of Christ’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance. Your move.
